Mom Genes by Hillary Grossman

This is the second book in the Forest River PTA Moms series, following Go On, Girl.

I have not read the first book and took me a minute as to who the characters were and I read the book just fine and enjoyed it so much!

Claire Conroy returns from a trip and in the process of separating from her husband Kevin, when a huge blow-up of speculations to her potential infidelity comes into play. I love the MacBook slamming infuriating emotions by Claire and all the laugh out loud moments that is surely relatable to all. I loved how the story pans out as she struggles to raise her three kids as a single mother, get back into the work force, and try her hand in love once more.

I enjoyed the writing told in first person and the emails back and forth on how rumor mills were fueled in the town of Forest River where the mothers have nothing better to do than live for a juicy gossip and the latest scandal. The writing was refreshing, easy to read and the story had a great flow that I enjoyed reading and turning those pages.

This was fun, entertaining, relatable and most of all a great distraction that I needed.

The PTA fun began with Go On Girl and continues with Mom Genes. As an aside, Hilary Grossman has the best titles!!

Although Mom Genes is the second book in the series, both play out over the same period of time so it really doesn’t matter which one you read first.

Claire is a newly single mom dealing with the fallout of her divorce, her selfish ex, three children, and a group of “friends” (PTA moms) who seem to vacillate from friend to enemy every other day!

I really enjoyed watching Claire navigate her new normal. Some parts of this book broke my heart and others had me laughing out loud. Gigi the grandma was hilarious! Although I wouldn’t categorize this as romance, there’s definitely some of that too!

Award for my favorite PTA mom goes to Jackie who has a heart of gold in a mean girl’s body. But I’d like to see a book from Donna’s POV...what do you say Hilary???

Mom Genes is a great follow-up story to Hilary Grossman's Go On, Girl. The PTA moms are back and they are just as intense and driven as ever.

Being allergic to drama myself, I was probably surrounded by these types of women during my children's school days, but didn't know it. That's probably why I find these books such fast reads. I love getting the inside peek at the politics of who's in, who's out and who is being gossiped about now.

Not only did Hilary Grossman do a great job of capturing the overall feel of the helicopter moms that are the main characters, but she also made them well rounded characters that actually (occasionally and reluctantly) showed their insecurities, weak points and other such things that managed to endear them to me.

When I realized I was getting near the end, I slowed down, trying to make Mom Genes last longer because when it was finished I knew I'd have to wait for the next book! If you enjoy mom stories, tell alls, or books that promise peeks into the other half's lives, you will enjoy this story. I'd suggest picking up anything by this author because I'm sure you'll like it.

Thank you to the author for providing an ARC at my request. All thoughts in this review are my own and happily given because I really loved this book.

The Forest River PTA moms are at it again!

When I first started reading this book I was confused because it felt like I had already read this book.  What I didn't realize is that this series covers the same time period but from a different perspective compared to Go On, Girl.  Once I had that in my mind, I was off to the races.

Claire is the focus of this book and she takes such a beating on her personal life.  Her husband has left her, the moms think she is having an affair, and then let's not even talk about those blind dates!  But that is ok because she got them back with almost no effort in a situation or two.  She keeps her cool and sense of humor throughout the book, even when dealing with her soon to be ex-husband, Kevin.  He is worthless and a slimeball and deserves nothing for his actions.

While most of the moms ban together, there is one that is out to sabotage everyone.  That is Donna.  I'm not sure what her issue is but she slanders everyone and slings so much mud.  Let's just say she gets her comeuppance several times in the book.  Jackie can be a tough nut to crack, but if she is on your side then you shouldn't want for much.  I can't wait to read her story in Mom Boss.

This is a fun read and it will leave you shaking your head wondering how people can act this way and get away with it most of the time.

We give this book 4 paws up and if you pick this book up, make sure to read the first book to see the various situations from another angle.

A book so good, its worthy of its own reality show.

Gossip, rumors and parental politics strike the PTA moms of Forest River once again. This time they are focused on Claire Conroy’s newly single status. But Claire doesn’t let them bring her down. As she deals with her inconsiderate ex, searching for a job and going on one disastrous date after another, I couldn’t help but feel bad for her and laugh a little remembering the bad dates I went on when I was single. Claire finally finds Mr. Right when she least expects it with an old friend from summer camp days, Holden Schwartz.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I was pulled into the story right away. I previously read Go On, Girl and when I heard there was a new Forest River PTA Moms book coming out, I put everything else aside and got to reading right away. It was like revisiting old friends again. I feel this book could be read as a stand-alone, but to get a true feel for the characters, I would recommend reading Go On, Girl first. Even if you don’t read it first, I am pretty sure you will after you finish Mom Genes.

I want to start this out by saying that I wasn't even aware that this is a follow-up book to the author's first book in her Forest River series. I had no trouble keeping up, so I think it does well as a standalone. I found it to be wonderful! Funny, endearing and oh so relatable. I remember these school days filled with PTA meetings of parental politics. Backstabbing, gossip and rumors - I definitely don't miss those. You have to admire Claire for not letting it get to her. She's dealing with an awful soon-to-be ex, job hunting and getting back into the dating pool. I remember her struggles with a laugh and totally sympathized with her.

What a excellent cast of well developed characters. I loved her family, from her supportive mom and her wonderful brother Jake to her hysterical grandmother Gigi. This was such an enjoyable book and I was sucked in from the very beginning. From the very start I stopped everything and curled up with a cup of coffee and this book and read it from early morning and just now finished it at almost 12:30 at night. I definitely recommend this read!

I would like to thank the author, publisher, and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book and exchange for a fair and honest review.

"Now when Clarie returns home from a trip to Italy separated from her husband of thirteen years, the imaginations of the Lululemon-clad ladies’ who lunch spin into overdrive.” This book was fun, light, entertaining and a fast read! I loved the humor from the gossipy strategical PTA moms of Forest River Elementary School. It gave me Big Little Lies meets A Simple favor vibes. I picked up this book initially from the description but halfway through the book I realized that author Hilary Grossman made this a sequel to book ’Go On Girl.’ Without even reading the first one you got a sense of who the characters were and their backstory so if you're like me and read it backward (oops 🤦🏻‍♀️🤪) you'll still be able to understand what is going on! Thank you to @Netgalley and @HumorWomensFiction for allowing me to read this early readers’ copy in exchange for an honest review.

Don't forget to keep an eye out for #3 in this series ’Mom Boss’ that gets released Feb 15th, 2021!

Mom Genes is the perfect follow up to Hilary’s first book. I could not put this book down – I love the characters, the plot, the humour – just about everything in this story!

We return to Forest River and the lives of the PTA Moms that live there. These Moms really only want the best for their children but will stop at nothing to ensure this, some are downright mean. We have elaborate parties, gifts, school trips, vacations and more. This novel is centred around Claire, who is trying to recover from a recent separation. While she is trying to move forward with her life, she is faced with rumours of an affair, her ex moving on quite quickly with one of his co-workers, an ex that doesn’t want to be there for their kids, her children’s mental health all while trying to find a job and get back out there in the dating world. No easy task for anyone is it? Now throw in a crazy ex-PTA mom and life just gets turned upside down.

Claire is the perfect example of a person who takes the high road, she receives multiple emails and texts of the rumours about her but doesn’t let herself become hateful. She doesn’t get vicious although she does let karma work its own magic. She recognizes her own flaws and embraces them. Her dating experiences make you laugh out loud but you are constantly rooting for her to find that one person that really cares for her, because she deserves it. She will do anything for her kids and family and her goodness shines throughout the novel. We are given this intimate look into her life and become so attached to her family that are going through so much while still trying to maintain some normalcy. Throw in the PTA moms and Jackie and you get a fantastic plot.

This is a hilarious, heart warming novel from start to finish that you can easily relate to as a Mom. At times you laugh with Claire and at other times you feel her pain. I became really attached to her character and just wanted her to keep pushing through. Mom Genes is an amazing read from start to finish, you will not want to miss this one!

Another deliciously enjoyable story from Forest River, reminiscent of how petty some adults can be!

Following on from the first novel in this series, Go On, Girl, this time round the story focuses on a different member of the Forest Rivers PTA. Claire Conroy has always been a committed mom to her three children; unlike their father who has other priorities. When the marriage ends in them splitting up, the rumour mill goes into overdrive and Claire has a really hard time of it. Trusting that her friends in the PTA have her back, Claire forges ahead with creating a new life for herself and her children, but she underestimates the determination of one other parent . . .

It's fair to say I loved the first book, so when the author offered me an arc copy of this one I jumped at the chance to read and review it - and now I'm hoping she continues with this series so it covers all the other moms! Having been a single parent when my kids were young, I know how vicious the trouble-makers can be, and Hilary Grossman has her finger bang on the pulse! With warmth, fun and a tinge of sadness the story unfolds and I was rooting for Claire all the way through! A fabulous novel - every bit as entertaining as the first - and a worthy sequel. Appealing and true-to-life, this is an original and humorous read from a talented author, and one I'm very happy to give a full five stars.

5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I finished this book last night and I had to seat back and go over my thoughts before I could write my review. Mom Genes is not my typical read, with that being said Hilary Grossman did a great job at drawing me in right away.

It was an addictive read, a bunch of PTA moms equals gossip, rumors and backstabbing. What is more intriguing than that right?

Even though there was a lot of drama there was also laugh out loud moments. This book honestly has everything. I felt like I was reading a reality show in my head and I loved every second of it.

Claire the main character is caught up in the middle of all this drama. Claire was such a well developed character. I really liked her and I couldn't help but root for her.

Although this is the 2nd book in the series I didn't feel lost reading it. Everything fall right into place but I will definitely be picking up the first book in the series, Go on Girl and I'm excited to read the 3rd instalment as well.

Mom Genes release date is March 24th, 2020. I highly suggest picking up a copy. You won't regret it!

I received this book from the author for a fair and honest review.

Mom Genes is a terrifying tale... wait. Let me back up. Grossman has painted such a realistic portrayal of the drama-ridden PTA moms that I'm thinking about homeschooling my child. It's an impressive level of character detail and development.

One of the things that I like about Claire is that she's not your basic early 20s chicklit heroine. She's got three kids. She's going through a divorce with the type of guy who gives all fathers a bad name. She's also poised, self-possessed, and driven. She cares fiercely about things, especially her kids, and all of that makes following Claire through her post-separation life intriguing. Every time I had to put this book down, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it again. Extremely well-written, and I can't wait to see what's next for this Mom group!

Hilary has taken the experiences so many woman have personally gone through and made it relatable and fun.  She tells the story in a way that makes us feel that we aren't as crazy as we sometimes think, even if the truth is we maybe are.

It's the story of a woman who's world is tossed upside down. Claire has to overcome the obstacles of an ugly divorce to a man whom she once upon a time adored and juggle motherhood, friendships both real and fake and the daunting task of dating to find real love again. It's about self discovery, love, honesty, patience and how to deal with bullies at an age when bullies shouldn't exist anymore. Claire handles herself with grace and style and made me laugh and cry wishing I was right there to be at her side and say "you got this".

It's a wonderful feel good and fun chick flick movie, only on paper!

There were so many emotions throughout the book, There were times you laughed with Claire and times you felt for her,. Her family was hilarious. Such a good laugh out out book! I highly recommend.

Mom Genes is the second installment of the series. However, this time we hear from Claire, newly divorced and still trying to navigate through the gossip. I really liked seeing how Claire managed her new role in life, while still involved in the PTA. My only question, are women really like that?!?!

Wonderfully written!

In Mom Genes, the second book of the Forest River PTA Moms series, the reader is transported back to Forest River, NY, where they catch up with the lives of the PTA moms. In this installment, the focus is on thirty-nine year old stay-at-home mom, Claire Conroy.

After thirteen years of marriage, Claire and husband Kevin's marriage hasn't been going well for some time, and they decide to separate. The tongues start wagging in this small town, rumors abound that Claire has been unfaithful, espcially after ex-PTA mom Donna Warren sets her sights on bringing Claire down with her non-stop gossip in front of the whole town! Claire is determined to start fresh as a single mom of three kids by finding a job, and even trying the dating scene, but it's not easy when the spotlight is always on her, so what's a girl got to do to find happiness?

Mom Genes is a humorous chick lit/women's fiction story that explores the complexity of living in the suburbs and dramatizes the relationships within the cutthroat world of suburban PTA moms.

I loved reading Mom Genes! This was such a fun story, you can't help but lose yourself in the drama and cutthroat parental politics that Claire encounters from the members of the small town Forest River PTA. With a lot of eye-rolling, smirking, and outright snickering, I really enjoyed following Claire and her co-PTA members as they ruled the roost at Forest River Elementary. It was fun to watch as Claire navigated through the trials and tribulations as she started her life over as a newly-single working mom. So pull up a chair and follow Claire as she finds her footing while dealing with the petty parental politics of the Forest River PTA, and the mean girl rumors that circulate throughout the community. With the help of some of the PTA moms, Claire gains self-confidence, while embracing the bonds of close girlfriends that she never thought she would ever have, and even a second chance at finding romance.

I can't wait to read Boss Mom, the third installment in the Forest River PTA Moms series. In that book, the reader will follow PTA President Jackie Martin's story. The publication date for the third book in the series is set for February 15, 2021, so don't forget to put that on your TBR list!

Mom Genes is a wonderful story of family, the invaluable bonds of friendships, and the ability to make it through anything that life throws at you along the way.

One of my favorite books in the contemporary mothering and parenthood genre was You go, Girl, the first novel in the Forest River PTA Moms series. I couldn’t wait to read Mom Genes, the second book in the series, yes- it’s the one with the equally fabulous cover. Love the title, too.

Readers who are familiar with the series, as well as those who might be starting with this book- it’s easy to get back into the sheltered, pampered, upper-class world of the out-of-control PTA Moms. This time, Claire is in the spotlight. Claire has a lot going on- she’s newly divorced with three kids in the grade school, and she’s trying to find a job and a new dud, I mean boyfriend. Can she count on the PTA Moms for friendship and support? What do you think?

Claire also has a mom, sister and grandmother, who help her stumble along. Grandmother Gigi is the scene stealer in this book. Well, mahjong and her shows are important.

Claire is both puzzling and intriguing. Sometimes she seems so sensible and purposeful, and then she goes and pulls a “Bad Mommy” behavior. Does anyone else think she was a bit harsh in judging her ex? Just me? Author Grossman, you gave us a fascinating character! And the PTA Moms continue to be wonderfully appalling and horrifying, and a teeny bit caring!

There is a lot of “telling” in this story, although I must say there is a lot to tell! Enjoy! Thanks to the author for a digital advance review copy. This is my honest review.

I was a big fan of Go On, Girl from Hilary Grossman, that first introduced us to the PTA moms of Forest River. I also do consider Hilary a friend, and have known her for years and also worked with her on past novels. I had a feeling she would deliver another fun one with Mom Genes, and I was right. Scandals, broken friendships and fighting through social media is the name of the game for this group. This story focuses on Claire and her recent separation from her husband. Already struggling with shielding her children from their now lackluster father and trying to build up her resume to get a new job, she also must deal with incessant chatter about if she’s moving on – and who she’s moving on with.
Some of the scenarios definitely made my eyebrows go up, and felt offended for Claire time and time again while reading her story. Just like in the first book though, I really appreciated the theme of friendships and helping others through a hard time, and I was rooting for Claire to get a happy ending. There were plenty of moments that kept me on my toes also – I appreciated that Grossman could add in those throughout the story to keep it from being more predictable. I’m really hoping we get a book from Jackie Martin’s POV, and I’m looking forward to more from this mom group!

Mom Genes, a follow up to Hilary Grossman's Go On, Girl is a fun book with just enough humor injected in the writing to keep it flowing quickly. Forest River PTA and the moms are at it again with more than their share of drama and gossip. Claire Conroy is newly single and it appears that her love life is the topic that everyone wants to weigh in on.

Several characters in the book are interesting and while all of the moms want only the best for their children sometimes the way that they go about it is a little bit extreme. Characters I loved included Claire who is just trying to figure out how to adjust to life as a single mom looking for a new love as well as her mom Grandma Gigi who simply says what she thinks.

If you are looking for a quick fun read this might be the book for you. You do not have to read the original book Go On, Girl to understand the story of Mom Genes. Life is messy. PTA moms can be mean and love is not always easy to find but author Hilary Grossman has made this story into a fun book to read. Thanks to NetGalley for a free copy for review.

Mom Genes by Hilary Grossman is book 2 of 3 in the Forest River PTA Moms Series. Although this book is part of a series, I didn't feel I was missing anything by reading the second book first. I found this book very entertaining and it kept my interest. I thought I was almost done and was going to stay up and finish it but, to my surprise there was an excerpt for Go On, Girl.

I don't have children and I still enjoyed this novel. It was fun to experience the malicious gossip and back biting that went on. I really liked Claire, she was the main character. With everything going on in her life, she continued to hold her head high and live her life her way. She set a fine example of holding her tongue and not firing back at the gossip mongers. I'm not sure I could have been as big of a person.

This was my first book by Hilary Grossman and I know it won't be my last. It was a great way to get relief from the stress of our quarantine situation. If you need some good entertainment and humor in your life, grab yourself a copy of Mom Genes.

Life can throw you so many curves that your head spins faster than the meanest pitch that ever was thrown! In Hillary Grossman's novel "Mom Genes" a woman has to remember who's her real friends are and who she can rely on when times get tough!

Kids, school PTA, marriage problems and some really cut throat moms give the main character in Grossman's book some massive migraines. Looking for answers to her problems, this harried mother is turned this way and that but does she stop for friends or love? What will really help her solve her issues? And how much needs to change in her life before the sun comes through the clouds?

I saw so much similar to my own life's questions from years past played out in the situations found in Grossman's story. Many women will be able to relate to how the main character is challenged through other people. The writing gives one a familiar, easy to associate with feel as it leads you through to the end.

This is a book, I'm sure, you'd feel good about getting. It has so much to offer everyone !

I enjoyed the change of perspective from Sydney’s point of you in Go On Girl to Claire’s. There’s certainly a welcome twist when it comes to that all encompassing rumor. A quick read with a few laughs, and some cringeworthy moments, moms can’t possibly email each other in the same manner as outlined in this book, can they?? Highly recommend this series for anyone who enjoys chick lit, easily something that can be read on the beach or by the pool.

This was a great sequel to Go On, Girl! Having read the first book in the Forest River PTA Moms series, I looked forward to seeing what was in store for Claire. The same chaotic behaviors from former PTA members was on full display here, reminding me of why I’ve always been a bit cautious of potentially signing up for my own children’s PTA.

I loved how Grossman threw in a few twists and turns regarding the origins and facts behind Claire’s potential scandal, at first even surprising me, the reader, where I wasn’t sure on what was real and what wasn’t. Not to mention the separation from Claire’s ex and what that really means for not only her, but for her children, too. I could really relate and identify with the storyline, having been in those same shoes. All of Claire’s personal business becomes up for grabs amongst the busybodies of the school, much of it blasted for all to see and leaving Claire feeling bewildered and unsure of what her next steps should be. It paints a different picture of her to her closest friends as well. I got the sense that they’d always seen Claire as the more dependable, responsible one in the group, yet given the rumors, it goes against what she has always stood for.

The characters are written so well, they elicited various emotional responses that at times would leave me feeling angry, or annoyed. Or, inspired. A definite conflict for Claire had been her ex, a man who could make any reader want to scream into the pages of their book or into their ereader and demand some sort of justice be done for Claire. Or Claire’s best friend Jackie, who might appear to be a bit tough on the outside, yet we get a better sense for just how close they are and the lengths she will go to, in order to protect her friend. Of course, the gossipy gals, one in particular, really irked me. You’d think they’d have something better to do with their time, but much like the real world, with social media and emailing capabilities, it seems that nothing is off limits, and perception, whether it’s true or not, is everything.

Claire might be dipping her toes back into the dating world, but the bigger picture here are the close female bonds she shares with her friends, and the fight she has in her to continue on and do well for her family and for herself. It’s inspiring to see the main character work towards finding their own path towards happiness, even with a few stumbles and falls along the way, no matter the opinion of others. I hear there is a third book coming to Forest River, Mom Boss- and I can’t wait to read it!

Anyone else a fan of reality TV wives and Dance Moms? Are you here for all of that? If so, then read Hilary Grossman's latest novel, Mom Genes for a quick fix of all things MAMA DRAMA.

(From the book) The meddling moms of Forest River live for a good scandal. Speculation surrounding Claire Conroy’s sex life has fueled the rumor mill for years. Now, when Claire returns home from a trip to Italy separated from her husband of thirteen years, the imaginations of the Lululemon-clad ladies’ who lunch spin into overdrive. As the gossipmongers create their own scandalous backstory for the separation, blaming Claire’s infidelity, she learns the hard way just how mean mommies can be. Eager to begin her new life as a single mom of three Claire puts her trust in Jackie Martin, the president of the PTA, to help tell her truth and free her of the false accusations and scandal. But the plan backfires, and Claire is put further into the spotlight when an embarrassed mom declares war. As Claire dusts off her resume, fights the daily urge not to strangle her ex-husband and his new girlfriend, and dips her toes into the dating world one dud at a time will she find the happiness she craves or succumb to the pressure of the mean girls?

I am a fan of any mom-focused drama because let's face it...we all know those annoying helicopter moms. When in education, I experienced them and now I try not to be one. Grossman creates such a fun and humorous environment in Mom Genes. The writing is smart and well-done with bits of incredible character development. I loved Claire who comes across as a mom I want to be friends with. She is an intelligent and self-assured main character, which is sometimes hard to find in this genre. I enjoyed the romp of PTA moms and lived through the drama by looking forward to the emails that were strewn throughout the story. The ending was satisfying. AND there was a bit of romance in the mix as well.

I give this novel 4 stars and I look forward to the third book...YES...the third book in the Forest River PTA Moms series. Check out the first book (Go on, Girl) on Kindle Unlimited now.

Mom Genes will be available on March 24, 2020. Thank you, Hilary, for a copy of your novel in exchange for my honest review.

Mom Genes is the second in a three-book series by Hilary Grossman. True to it's book blurb, this story is very much Big Little Lies meets Class Mom (minus the murder) but just as much drama!

Mom Genes is a light-hearted read even though it deals with real world issues like dealing with gossip and social politics. I enjoyed the character development and the overall flow of the story and would recommend to anyone looking for a fun dramatic read. You don't have to read the first book to enjoy the second but I always recommend starting in order if you have the option.

For all the moms out there, or anyone that ever had a parent that was part of the PTA at their own school, this book is for you!

Fun Fact: I had the opportunity to share an exclusive interview with the author. Go check it out, it's a fun one!!

In a Nutshell: Fun second book in 3-part series. Great read for anyone that enjoys dramatic yet funny chic-lit or women's fiction.

Claire Conroy's marriage has imploded and the rumour mill of moms at Forest River Elementary School are abuzz with gossip - whether any of it is remotely true or not is not a factor.

Behind the carefully curated, picture-perfect existence each woman tries to uphold hides a normal woman, vulnerable to being hurt, betrayed and other realities life throws at them..

Interspersed with emails from a well meaning friend who adds drama to Claire's life by forwarding her the gossip, we travel along Claire's path dealing with the bitchiness of other moms, her insensitive ex-husband and her attempt to find herself.

The story seems to run along the same time period as the first book in this "series" - "Go On Girl". Its not necessary to have read the first book, but it may give you a bit more insight into the group dynamics of the PTA ladies if you have. Judging by the author's note it seems we may soon travel back to Forest River to delve into another PTA mom's world.

This story made me laugh. The PTA members of Forrest River school are meddling and full of gossip and drama. They are now focused on fellow member Claire's love life. The whole town is talking about how she came back from a trip to Italy with her husband and 3 children separated and divorced. Then a new man moved into her house soon after. What a scandle. Claire let's them gossip for a bit before breaking the news to them who this new man really is. (I laughed at this part when she reveals it).

This is a follow up book to "Go on, Girl", which I haven't read yet. If you read this book, I recommend reading it after reading the first book so you don't miss any introduction to the characters. I

Overall, this was a pretty good humorous read. #netgalley, #momgenes

Meh. The weakest of the series so far. But I’ll still read the rest :)
