Someone tell me to learn how to be okay with DNFing books.

My inability to do so is bringing only suffering to myself, and also to people everywhere, because when I force myself to finish a book I didn’t like you all have to deal with the repercussions (i.e., me grumping around on Goodreads complaining in 1,000 words about why a book was so grump-inducing).

Every single character in this book is a butt.

Normally I like to flatter myself that I have a “way with words,” meaning I write at a level just above that of a fifth grader, but to be honest I lack the energy or motivation to find a better way to describe the characters in this. They don’t deserve it. They are immature and they’re the worst and a fitting punishment is that I will refer to them exclusively as insults from the mind of your average ten-year-old.

Our main character, Evie, is a buttface. She is in her 384738297th year of a job where she is harassed, manipulated, overworked, and disrespected. She is a bad friend, a total doormat, and a straight-up fool. She has no ambitions or cunning and she f*cks everyone in her life over but somehow manages to STILL not stand up for herself.

Previous to this reading experience I was unaware that it was possible to be horrible to everyone around you and still not stand up for anything you believe in, but I have been enlightened.

Evie’s job throughout this book is to help Ezra, a famous screenwriter, write a rom-com script by enlisting herself in a series of meet-cutes.

For some reason, she takes it upon herself to present these to him in the form of...scenes. Pre-formatted, already edited, well-written scenes. Ready to be copy and pasted into a screenplay.

If you see where this is going, take my advice: Do not make my mistakes. Do not convince yourself that there’s no way that something so blatantly obvious and dumb could be the actual plot.

Because, for context, everything that Evie doesn’t realize throughout this whole thing is made abundantly clear to the reader.

But anyway, back to Ezra.

Ezra is a butthole who is obviously a butthole from the start. Sometimes Evie has these inexplicable scenes where she’ll make heart eyes at him because he’s hot, but they never make sense and they come from nowhere and the author doesn’t try all that hard to make us buy into them.

But really the butthole thing is all I have to say about Ezra.

Evie’s boss, Monty, who is the one (with Ezra’s heroic assistance) doing the harassing and manipulating and disrespecting, is the worst kind of #MeToo-able boss character. It’s just...I mean, read the room, author. Seriously. Who wants to read about this? Who wants to treat a bumbling sh*tty man as redeemable solely because he has power in 2020?

All of which is to say: Monty is a butthead.

And Ben, a single dad who has the misfortune of being a regular at the coffee shop where Evie often shows up to do her daily buttface-ing, is a personality-less doormat too, so I guess he and Evie have something in common.

(I ran out of butt-related insults, which is fine, because Ben is nothing. He neither deserves nor doesn’t deserve a butt-themed moniker.)

I just...did not like this at all. I hated a lot, and everything I didn’t hate was bland.

Bottom line: A butt-book.

it's actually a good sign for how my brain is doing when i'm only capable of reading romance. definitely not a cry for help that every single book i read has to have a happily ever after

this story produces so much cheese, germany is shaking in their boots.
but cheesy-ness is exactly what you want from a rom-com and i couldnt be happier.

the story is light, its funny, its full of clichés and doesnt take itself seriously, it has a great cast of characters, and a very satisfying ending. it is predictable, but i think that adds to the charm of rom-coms, which is you know exactly what you are going to get with a few chuckles along the way.

i will say the synopsis is a tad bit misleading, but its pretty easy to see where the story is going early on, and i was pleased with the direction it took.

overall, im quite pleased with this debut and i cant wait to see what else RW will come up with!

“It’s funny to think,” Maria chipped in, “but if this was an actual rom‑com, you’d end up with the arrogant writer who, it would turn out, was only using his massive ego to hide an endearing lack of confidence.” There was a moment of stunned silence in which we both stared at her. “I’m kidding! You’d never fall for that cockhat.”

This was such an amazing book to curl up with. A feel-good, laugh-out-loud, insane romcom with a whole bunch of meet cutes that'll have you constantly turning the page!

Made for Netflix
Before I start on my actual review of this book, I just want to say that this has all the ingredients for a perfectly unrealistic Netflix romcom that would be a complete hit! All the while I was reading this, I could just imagine it going from page to screen...

So, this was actually really enjoyable! I thought it was cute and inherently light enough to make me fly through it in more or less a couple days! I think it's perfect that this book is set to release in the month of December because it would be such a fluffy Christmas-time, Holiday-esque read... (even though it has nothing to do with either. There is a passing christmas scene, and that's pretty much it.) But, it's the atmosphere that had me reading this and gobbling it up like chocolate! It truly felt like a silly, insanely dramatized romantic comedy that you would see on the big screen. It was comical and didn't take itself too seriously, so I will definitely be reading this author again!

“No, she is not okay. For sodding’s sake, Janet, pass me a moist towelette.”

Rachel Winters delivers a really fun, hilarious and event-packed book that had me loving Evie Summers by the minute. Evie has to recreate a bunch of famous meet-cutes in order to keep her job. So begins a classic tale of awkward moments, adorable side-characters, class A dialogue and "love interests" that had going from cringes to smiles. The humor in this was very tongue-in-cheek and so many bizzare things ended up happening. Evie stayed true to herself from start to finish, and I loved seeing a female lead that didn't have that "damsel in distress" characteristic that most romcoms lean towards.

While I found it really addictive, there were some elements that I struggled with. Notably, there were A LOT of cliches in this book. From the gay best friend to the group of girls as support and even the single hot dad (which isn't to say that I didn't love Annette... she had my heart and soul). The ending was unique and although I didn't see it coming, some scenes lacked the bravado that I enjoyed during the first half of the book. The magic slowly simmered down towards the end, and everything felt fragmented and rushed. Yet, this is not to say that I didn't really like the "lesson" this book teaches, I did! I found the message behind this book deeper than it let on and I wasn't expecting that at all.

LOVED IT! Rachel Winters’ debut was a true laugh out loud romcom. I cannot remember the last time I laughed so hard while reading a book, there is the most hilarious hen do/bachelor party ever in this fun story. This book is instantly being put on my FAVs shelf, I just loved everything about it, it was the perfect mood lifter during these crazy times. Evie is assistant to a famous agent and has been tasked with the job to make sure screenwriter Ezra finishes his romcom script on time. Ezra is difficult and arrogant, Evie and her friends have nicknamed him the N.O.B. The number one boyChild. Ezra tells Evie he will finish his script on time if she can prove to him that she can actually meet someone through one of these ridiculous romcom meet cutes. Let the fun ensue. Evie manufactures one hilarious yet humiliating meet cute after another and reports back to Ezra. Will Ezra finish the script on time? Will Evie finally get her long due promotion? Will one of these crazy meet cutes actually work? A definite feel good story guaranteed to make you laugh and want to rewatch all your favorite romcoms.

Meet Cute (taken from the dictionary)
noun
1. (in a film or television show) an amusing or charming first encounter between two characters that leads to the development of a romantic relationship between them.
"it all started with a little meet-cute in a hospital elevator"
verb
1. (of two characters in a film or television show) have an amusing or charming first encounter that leads to the development of a romantic relationship.
"he meets-cute with a cynical actress"

Can you fall in love in real life as couples do in the movies?

That is what Evie wants to find out…NO, she needs to find this out to convince a screenwriter to follow through and write that ROMCOM her has been paid to write. Evie has been an assistant for far too long. It’s almost a joke – heck it is a joke amongst her peers. So, she attempts to fall in love through various meet cute situations.

Here friends are there to help and their back and forth banter can be read. Evie has also befriended a father-daughter duo, Ben and Annette) who have witnessed a meet-cute gone bad. Can Evie meet the man of her dreams, convince a screenwriter to write that movie already, save her job and save her dignity?

This was a fun rom-com that follows Evie as she attempts to have meet-cutes inspired by famous Hollywood Movies and see if they work in real life. It was nice to see Evie grow as a person and get to know Ben and Annette better. Little Annette stole the show, or shall I say book for me.

This is a light fun book. There are no steamy or gratuitous scenes so most readers will find this book enjoyable. It’s predictable but that took nothing away from my enjoyment. This is a great book to turn to when you want a lighter read.

I also like that the characters in this book are dealing with real-life issues such as grief, hearing issues, single parenthood, dating, etc.

**I'm teetering on a 3.25/3.5 rating for this.

Thank you to the publisher and Edelweiss who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

A cute, funny and entertaining British Rom-com with a great concept!

So here I go again on my quest to seemingly read every romance with this new quirky type of cover lol! Honestly, did the same illustrator design them all?! Anyway...😂

Evie Summers, a long suffering and downtrodden assistant to an awful agent Monty and his annoying screenplay writer Ezra (NOB or Number One Boychild) has to recreate romcom meet-cutes to meet the perfect man, in order to inspire NOB to write a great romcom! If she fails to get NOB past his writer's block, then the agency will go under, and she will lose her job.

Cue lots of second hand embarrassment and laughs! Evie literally took meet-cutes from famous romcoms and recreated them to see if they would work in real life, with pretty hilarious results! It had every romcom cliché in, and plenty of OMG moments! Evie was a bit of a disaster, and I couldn't help but like her and laugh along at her antics, even if they were highly unrealistic and unbelievable! You kind of just have to go with the flow with this dramatic story! Some of the situations she got herself into...
description
I liked Evie's friendship group, who had been friends for years, but were all in different stages of their lives, as well as different parts of the country. Even though her friends included the typical gay bf included in romcoms, her friendships felt real, and I did relate to what they were going through. It is so hard to maintain old friendships when you live far away, have busy jobs and/or children, and my old school friends and I also use a group chat to keep in touch like they did here with hilarious results. I liked how her friends had their own things going on, and that they called her out on some of her ridiculous behaviour because that is what real friends do! Evie was definitely not the greatest friend in this...but she did realise this, so I couldn't help liking her and rooting for her. Saying that, I did really feel for Sarah, I mean Evie certainly made an impact on her friend's hen do and wedding...

I liked that this had a positive message on self discovery and self worth, as well as the inclusion of a deaf girl. I appreciated the discussions on dealing with the loss of a loved one, and how different people grieve too, and I thought this was done well. I also get really excited when a book is set in the UK, and I know the places that they talk about, in this case London and Sheffield. This book wasn't that heavy on British slang I don't think, but FYI a hen do is a bachelorette party!

I did like Ben and Anette, a man and his daughter, whom Evie befriends in a coffee shop. They supported her when she needed it, and were generally really cute. I did however have a problem with Anette's age. This isn't the first or last time I will have mentioned this, but it really irks me when a child is written older than they are. Anette was meant to be 7...I have a year old, teach plenty of them, and have spent time around my 7 year old's friends. This character was far too self aware, mature and wise! I thought she came across as about 12/13 at the very least! When she was revealed to be 7, I was like wtf?! No one else has mentioned this in their reviews, so it's obviously just a me thing, but it really bugged me!

As I said, this was a lot of fun! It was definitely more chick-lit than romance though. It was actually very light on romance and there were no steamy scenes (unless you count Jane, Evie's flatmate parading her lover and leaving vibrators in the dishwasher and bathroom!). It was sweet, and reminds me of the chick-lit I used to read when I was younger! I can definitely imagine this as a film.

However, the plot was quite predictable to me in terms of both the plot and the love interest, and I felt that all of the drama did overshadow the romance part of this. It wasn't the main part of this book, and I wasn't really invested in it?! There wasn't much chemistry at all, and it felt a little flat.

This was a definite 3 star read for me, because although it was hilarious, and I enjoyed it, it just didn't have that extra something that I needed. If you're looking for a funny, light and really entertaining read though, and are a fan of Sophie Kinsella type chick-lit, then you should definitely read this! 👍 👍 👍

Many thanks to Edelweiss for making this available as a download!

Can you believe it? I finally liked a romance again (after what feels like a never-ending post-Helen Hoang search). The interesting thing is it seems I liked it because:

1) Would Like to Meet isn’t actually a romance, it’s a true romcom, so I didn’t have to read the usual story with two protagonists moaning and angsting and lusting over each other for 400 pages.

2) it was written by a U.K. author who is quite funny; humor is something I find seriously lacking in American books.

This romcom is pretty meta in the best possible way. A screenwriter agent’s assistant is forced to reenact various romcom meet-cute scenarios and report back her experiences to an asshole-type screenwriter with a writing block to jump-start his creativity and inspire him to write a good romcom. It gets even more meta once you get to the end of the story.

The focus on work and creative process and friendship is what I liked about Would Like to Meet. The dialog is funny and I truly hope this novel does get made into a movie. I am wondering if I would have given this book a higher rating had I not read it during a busy/slumpy week. I couldn’t quite get the momentum going. Maybe the book needed to slim down a bit and be a little more joke-dense and double-down on the disastrous meet-cutes. Still, the novel has a Bridget Jones-like potential in it, IMO.

I kicked off the New Year with comfort – shirking my Christmas undecorating duties in exchange for a book about meet cutes. Y’all know what a meet cute is, right? In case you don’t, here’s a brief rundown: (a) leading lady spills her drink on leading male, (b) gets high heel stuck in sewer grate a la damsel in distress, (c) two strangers ride share across the country together to start new jobs, (d) one drops a bunch of papers (or experiences some other unfortunate workish disaster) and utters the Queen Mother of all curse words in what ends up being the new boss’ face, (e) “carry a watermelon.” And then . . . .

They’re destined to be together. Simple.

I love romcoms and I love the meet cute. I actually read the blurb about this one (because I thought it looked like a Shop Around The Corner (or You’ve Got Mail to you young kids) revamp – which totally would have been A-Okay, but I wanted to confirm my wrong suspicions) and couldn’t wait to snag it from the library. But when I started I was a little worried because she . . . . .

Egad. Not the manic pixie. Luckily she just wore crinoline skirts with Doc Martens and didn’t have the eyeball-twitch-inducing “quirky” personality to go along with it. The bigger concern was the leading male. You see our girl Evie works as an assistant to a major Hollywood agent and has been assigned a pretty much to babysitting role to make sure the firm’s biggest client Ezra fulfils his obligation to write the screenplay for a sure-to-be blockbuster romantic comedy. He’s difficult/she agrees to reenact various meet cutes to prove . . . .

“A good meet-cute shows us it’s possible for a single moment to change everything for the better.”

“Please. No one’s ever met anyone the way they do in those movies. The coincidences. The clichés. In real life if someone spilled a drink on you, you’d be pissed off, maybe sue them if it’s a hot one, not fall for them. Real love can’t be contrived.”

“Tell that to Tinder.”

I just assumed those two would be destined to fall in love . . . .

But then he was pretty much a real NOB and he even met her at the door in his bathrobe and . . . .

Eeesh. #toosoon

Luckily there was a little bit of Sleepless in Seattle waiting in the wings and things ended up going swimmingly.

Recommended.

Spoiler alert for all your pornoheads: This is a TRUE romcom just like the movies. Totally PG.

Cute, and Entertaining to Boot.

Evie has been an Assistant to a Film Agent for years, while every other assistant who works for other agents has been promoted around her. It seems like she’ll never get her chance until Ezra Chester (who Evie has nicknamed “NOB” (for Number One Boychild)) needs help with his script. What kind of help? Well Nob has writer’s block. He’s never written a romantic comedy before and he enlists Evie to go on “Meet Cutes” and insists that she send her recaps of those moments to him for inspiration.

The “Meet Cutes” range from being downright funny, adorable and dreadful. Throughout, you can’t help but hope that one of these encounters will turn out to be the real thing.

“Would Like to Meet'' includes a fabulous cast of characters who I enjoyed getting to know. This is a sweet, fun Rom Com that is completely compelling and engaging and is sure to steal your heart.

Published on Goodreads on 5.22.20.

Sometimes you can only get where you need to go by taking small steps.
You just have to be willing to take a chance.

Story 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Evie Summers loves romcoms, she literally watched all of them. Research for her job as the assistant of an agent, you could say.
She always thought of herself as lucky. Even though she couldn’t live her dream to be a writer herself, she helped the people who could. But when her job is in danger and her boss tells her that there could be a possibility to be an agent if they survive, she takes a chance to save the agency and secure a promotion.
Little did she know she would try out all the magical romcom moments of her favorite movies just to inspire a writer she despises.
But what starts as a crazy idea becomes one hell of adventure full of funny moments, romantic gestures and a little bit of tension.
I definitely enjoyed it.

Character 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Sometimes you read about characters were your first thought is relatable!. Evie Summers is one of them (at least for me!).
She’s a brilliant assistant of an super old agent who always calls her when he has emergencies. (Even though they don’t really are emergencies.)
She always saves him no matter what.
She’s literally the perfect assistant.
And he knows that. He knows that she is hard working, super talented and could be an amazing agent. But he never lets her rise.
Even though she is pushed down by so many people and things, she always stands up. Either by the help of her best friends (who are by the way so funny and crazy, I love them) or by herself.
Throughout the book she has such a huge character development. From being the assistant who does everything for her job to becoming a brave women who will fight for her dreams and rights no matter what.
Definitely awesome girl, this one.

Also a single dad who has a cute quirky daughter and is always silent and broody but also really handsome and is always saving the day?
Hellooooooooo 😉😉😉 I’m here for that.

But then... the writer who needs to be saved from writers block? Or his big ego?
Also a good one. (Or not)

Relationships 🌟🌟🌟🌟
So, I’m a sucker for romcoms.
I probably watched them all and if this wasn’t real life I would probably wish i would’ve met my boy with a magical moment like in all of romcoms.
(But we met in school. As teenagers. So at least I have that going for me 😅)
And seeing Evie trying out all these set ups was so funny and hilarious. All the things that went wrong. And Ezra listening and reading Evies stories, Ben always being there every Sunday. (And some other moments too)
It was the cutest thing ever.
Also I wasn’t sure with who she ends up with at the end, but I always had a feeling.

Writing style 🌟🌟🌟🌟
The funny thing is, when I started this book in English I was in love. Absolutely 100% in love. I thought this would be my next “the hating game” book. But after reading it in German I’m not so sure. It feels like the translations killed some part of the story.
It’s the same story but also not?
I can’t really explain it.
The writing was really funny and I enjoyed it a lot while reading it.
Definitely worth a try if you’re in love with romcoms.

This read is sort've hard to pin down for me. It has everything you could possible want in a rom-com : an imperfect heroine who messes up but you still want to root for, a hilarious friend group you would totally go drinking with, a hero (or two!) who might be the one, and a meet cute (or twelve hundred). I loved so much of it. Some of it, both dialogue and situations, were great. Other moments just.. maybe dragged on or, just due to circumstance, frustrated me.

This is definitely an author I would read again. It's a pretty great debut. There's a lot of heart here, a lot of greatness, but I do feel like it's also just trying to do a little too much. And that's not counting all the big movie moment recreations.

I honestly don't have much more to say. I will point out there are a few bits in the summary that don't quite jive with the plot itself, or feel a little misleading in hindsight, but not necessarily in a bad way? I would just recommend you go in with a vague or general idea of what to expect and ride it out.

Also? This would make a great movie. I'd definitely watch it.

A thoroughly enjoyable rom-com about...the process of creating a rom-com. If romantic comedies happen to be one of your favourite genres, you are bound to recognize the familiar tropes and the usual cast (a group of best friends including a gay BFF, an adorable widower with an unusually bright child, an incompetent boss, a grumpy client with impossible demands, two love interests to keep you watching (or rather reading in this case) until the very end, and a heroine who needs to remember her dreams and go and fight for them.
I really liked Evie, the 29 year old assistant at a screenwriting agency, overworked, underpaid and long overdue promotion. In order to save her agency from a financial disaster, Evie needs to persuade their famous, but so arrogant client Ezra Chester to finish the rom-com script he had been working on before he developed a writing block. Evie's task is to re-enact classic meet-cutes in real life and report the dialogue to Ezra. Here comes a string of embarrassing and hilarious scenes that make up the protagonist's journey to self-discovery and meeting her own true love.
Great concept, entertaining dialogue (there's nothing I love more than a bit of banter), fun characters- definitely recommended.

Thank you to Edelweiss and G.P.Putnam's Sons for the ARC provided in exchange for an honest opinion.

Pretty cute, and several funny moments. Two big things the plot was leading to were very obvious from the start to me, so I got weary of the MC not picking up on them. Also, if I never hear the term 'meet cute' again it will be too soon.

I am definitely an outlier on this one. After an hour of listening, I just want the pain to stop. Evie is a doormat stuck in a slapstick loop surrounded by truly awful people. Her boss is a pathetic, arrogant lump and their prize client is an arrogant jackwagon. I don't want her to succeed at helping them. I want them to fail spectacularly if only so they'll dump the karmic load they're carrying for being such awful people. After realizing that she was going to be made to do things to appease the insufferable jerk who can't be bothered to do work he has already been paid to do, I gave up in disgust.

One star for me, but again, I'm a complete outlier. A lot of other people love this story and Evie's journey to self-discovery. I'm sure that's there. But spending a whole novel with insufferably arrogant crap-weasels isn't going to be my happy place.

This was cute. Something that I needed today. Just a nice easy little story that I didn’t have to think too much about.

It’s been ages since I’ve read a rom com like this. The premise was ok. Kept my interest but.....the beginning was so slow. It took half the book to pick up pace.

Varied amount of emotions.

I think if the first half of the book had as much pace as the second half it would have got higher stars. It was easy to read, but a bit tedious in places. If that makes sense? My mind started wandering. But like I said, soon as it picked up half way I was enjoying it much better.

Ezra Chester: 33 years old, Blonde, Blue Eyed
Ben Williams: Black, Brown Eyed
Setting: London, New England

Overall Opinion:
I wanted to like this. I really did but for whatever reason it just fell flat. It was missing that spark to really connected me with the storyline and toward half way through the book, I found myself skimming far more pages than I would've liked too. Besides Ben, Anette, and Evie friends I was not a big fan Evie or Erza (for obvious reasons) nor did I like how Erza story concluded. I don't know, but it was just blah. You know? This novel had so much potential that I am somewhat disappointed with the end result.

I loved this premise of this one so much and sadly I was a bit disappointed.

I liked Evie well enough. She’s a good person and means well, but I never really connected to her. Her friends are a lot of fun and supportive. The men in this story were not promising...Ezra was unredeemable, Monty needed multiple junk punches, and Ben fell a bit flat. My favorite was Anette and I could have done with a million more scenes with her.

Plot wise, it was meh. I found myself skimming a lot of scenes, looking for the spark of romance {which legit didn’t happen until the very end and lasted a page}. The screenplay directions at the top of the chapters didn’t seem to add much and there are loads of email and text exchanges. All of these did not translate in the e-arc and the formatting was a mess. There were line numbers throughout the actual text.

Overall, it was a fun idea, but the execution didn’t work for me. I did keep reading because I was mildly curious as to how it would play out, but I could have easily set it down and not finish.

**Huge thanks to GP Putnam & Sons for providing the arc free of charge**

Evie Summers works as an assistant at a film agency. She has been there for seven years and never promoted, yet she feels like she has a responsibility to her elderly boss Monty to keep the place running as smoothly as she can.

With bigger agencies now in the game, her firm William Jonathan Montgomery and Sons have only one important client still on their books, Ezra Chester, or as Evie calls him ‘NOB’ short for Number One Boychild. Ezra had agreed to write the script for a romance movie but is suffering from writer’s block as he doesn’t believe people can fall in love in real life like they do in the movies.

In a bid to help him keep to his deadline, which now only has three months left, Evie offers to prove that you can and sets about trying to meet ‘the one’ through a series of movie-esq romance moments. What could possibly go wrong?

Would Like to Meet is a fun read that follows Evie as she embarks on trying to find love, movie style. From joining a book club to throwing her drink over a man, she is armed with all the rom-coms she can find and follows their way of finding a man. Every time she completes her moves, whether with success or not, she writes a report so that Ezra can read it.

The opening scene of Evie in the coffee house had me giggling and I knew this was a book I was going to enjoy. Two of my favourite characters were father and daughter Ben and Anette who have watched Evie try out her rom-com moves and with Anette now intrigued the pair become Evie’s confidants.

Each chapter has a movie script opening to it letting you know where the scene was about to take place and who was in it. I actually enjoyed the chapters beginning like this and I can say that it does help you to imagine the scene in your head whilst reading.

The book has an air of Bridget Jones to it with Evie’s best friends, 2 female, and one gay male, giving her tips via text messages or turning up at her house for dinner parties, lots of wine and to make plans.

The book is amusing and in the current situation in the world, it was nice to just take my mind to a fun place and watch a woman get into all kinds of weird and fun situations all in the name of trying to keep the company she works for going out of business.

This had a weird not-really-a-love-triangle-love-triangle dynamic, which threw me off quite a bit. It was cute but not as focused on the romance as I would've liked for a romance novel. This is another one that I'd class as a contemporary instead of a romance. Had I known that it would lean more contemporary going into it, I think I would've enjoyed it more. That being said, it was a cute story!

Rom-coms have been one of my favorite genre for as long as I can remember; movie and book wise but this just wasn't good enough.
How can I describe this book in one sentence? Don't let the synopsis fool you.

Ever seen a trailer so good that you were completley mesmerized for the entire 2 minutes and something second and you simply can't wait for it to come out then you watch the movie and realize all the good parts were in the trailer and the movie itself is dull? Yeah, that's the case with this book. Well, at least for me it was.

I guess this was an OK debut, but I did not like it. #sorrynotsorry

I really liked this one! It captures more about falling in love rather than giving in to lust, like a lot of romance novels today.
I loved the way it ended above anything else. I was so nervous throughout the read that how in God's name was this going to end?! But when I reached it, I was smiling so hard. It is definitely one of my favourites somehow. A meet-cute, indeed.
I anticipated the ending, but still when it hit me, I felt happy and relieved.

Evie Summers, an assistant to a screen writer agent, was long overdue for a promotion. Her agency’s current client, Ezra could make or break the agency, he signed a rom-com deal and hadn’t delivered. Evie was tasked with getting Ezra to deliver on his promise, problem was, he doesn’t believe in rom-coms, he thinks they are lame and impractical; for that reason, he wanted to quit. With Evie’s job on the line and to prove him wrong, she struck a deal with him by agreeing to recreate real life meet-cutes from her favourite movies to inspire Ezra. Week after week she humiliated herself meeting strangers, to get Ezra to write the screenplay. The unintended benefit was, she dug herself out of a relationship and career rut; and the cherry on top was finding love in the process.
3 stars for this read. I enjoyed seeing Evie take charge of her life in the end instead of being pushed around by everyone.

This is a book that makes my rule of not DNF books painful. There’s nothing I enjoyed about reading this.

Starting out, I didn’t like the books format of setting up the scene in every chapter. I get that it goes well with the theme, but it was so cringy. All the text messages and emails also made the story feel stagnant.

Evie, the main character of the book, is one of the most unlikable persons I’ve ever had to read about. She’s an absolute shit friend that leaves all the people in her life hanging because of her job. If she does show up, all she talks about is her job. She singlehanded managed to fuck up her friend’s bachelorette party because she couldn’t even send an email. When confronted about it, she immediately goes the “poor me” route. No, this is your mistake. It’s not you that we should feel sorry about right now. You choose to prioritize a shit job.

And what a wonderful job that is. She is on standby 24/7 so she can help her boss hide from clients, break his out of a toilet and clean up poop from the carpet while the boss takes credit for her job. And then she gets the task of getting the client Ezra Chester to finish his script for a romantic comedy.

Ezra, that is annoyingly called NOB the entire book, is an asshat. He’s deflecting and deliberately makes noice when people talk. But he’s hot, so Evie just accept it. Ezra has no intention to finish his scrips, so Evie is supposed to give him inspiration by doing meet-cutes. This is mostly Evie running around and spilling shit on people. She’s then to retell what happened to Ezra in the form of a finished scene that could go directly into a script. A script he refuses to show Evie. You all see where this is going, right? It’s painfully obvious.
To summarize:

Ezra: please do my work and send me finished scenes that could be put into a script.
Evie: *Does that*
Ezra: put those scenes in a script, takes the credit.
Evie: *surprised pikachu face*

The fun part is that I wrote that part of the review about halfway into the book, over a hundred pages before the reveal. That’s how obvious it was. How am I suppose to root for a character that is so selfish, naive and frankly, stupid?

The book spent way to much time building up these characters. Evie, that spends all her time at her job and still managed to be super unprofessional. She uses the company’s finances to buy gloves for over a hundred pound.
And Ezra, who has a dog that’s vegan. Don’t ever make your dog vegan. They are strictly carnivores and need meet to survive. Is you as an owner force your own life choices onto your animal, and as a result make them sick, maybe you shouldn’t have a pet. Or maybe have a rabbit, they are vegan.

And then we have Ben, a guy that Evie meets while she’s running around spilling shit on people. This guy has a personality as interesting as watching paint dry and is not really interested in spending time with Evie. But she’s friends with his daughter Annette, a seven year old. Am I alone with feeling that this is super weird? A grown woman being friends with a child when the parent don’t approve? And I don’t buy that the kid is only seven, she acts much older. I mean, she took pictures with a advance camera when her mother was alive. When she was four? Super unrealistic.

There’s also a scene when Evie’s roommate comes on to Jeremy, a friend of Evie. He then states that he’s gay and the roommate then states that she’s still interested. I’m sorry, but what?? How about we respect people sexuality? If a man stated that he would still be interested in boning a woman that is interested in other women we would react. It not okey the other way around. It’s not a woman being empowered by being open about her sexlife. She’s insulting Jeremy by stating that she doesn’t care or respect his sexuality.

I blame Emily Henry for spoiling me rotten with how romance should be written.

I’ve been reading so much romance lately, something about this time of year makes me want to read nothing but cozy little stories and I’ve really been looking forward to getting started on this one. While it was cute and pretty fun, it also took me quite awhile to warm up to it and I kind of wish it was 100 pages shorter.

Let’s start with what I liked, because there was plenty. I loved the premise, I die for a meet cute and this had a bunch, albeit most were huge fails but that’s what made this book unique. Each chapter opened like a movie or a play setting the scene and I though that was a nice touch. There were two options for a love interest for Evie and it’s always cool to be kept on my toes in a romance, I like that whole who will she end up with thing. One of the options, Ben had a quirky and adorable daughter, Anette and she added something light and fun to an already light and fun read. I can’t resist a cute kid in a book or real life. So really, lots to like here but some stuff that made me not love it like I wanted to as well.

My complaints are kinda nit picky, but I found the beginning to be drawn out and boring. After I hit the halfway point I was finally invested but I just feel like that’s a long time to start to care about what’s gonna happen to the characters. I mentioned before that I felt like it could’ve been shorter and I really think that maybe would’ve helped my boredom in the beginning. Minor stuff, but it bugged me enough to share it so 🤷‍♀️ Also this has zero steam, if you’re looking for something spicy this isn’t it. It’s more cutesy and sweet and often a little over the top and ridiculous, but definitely fun AND funny.
