Love Happens #5

Down to Fall

Rate this book
A lust story. Only meant to be temporary.
A love story. Always meant to be permanent.
A hate story. Never meant to be.
This... is all three.

Nicole
It started in an elevator in California. Our lust story.
You know, the kind you know going in is a bad idea, but... the nagging desire and all. A few drinks in the hotel bar across from our workplace. A few nights in a luxury suite twenty floors above. What could it hurt?
Innocent fun would be had by all, and I’d walk away a well-satisfied woman. Ready to continue my life of brokenhearted loneliness.

Grady
It started on a ridge in Afghanistan. Our love story.
You know, the kind you felt in your soul at first sight, but... the tragic circumstances and all. Intentionally casual conversation over Irish whiskey. Intentionally casual sex over the course of two weeks. How could I refuse?
Guilt-ridden bonds would be built, and I’d confess my darkest sin. Beg for forgiveness five years overdue and clean my conscience along with it.

It started with the cold hard truth. Our hate story.
You know, the kind that could end a surprisingly beautiful beginning.

Jodi Watters writes contemporary romance that’s flirty, dirty, real, and fun. With witty dialogue, loads of emotion, and super steamy times, her novels will suck you in until the very last page.

Her love for romance began in junior high, when she and a friend noticed a dumpster of discarded paperbacks behind a local dime store. Covers missing and each book split down the spine, she scanned the pages for any love or lust words—and curse words, too. From that point on, she scoured the public library and the paperback racks at every store, reading anything labeled romance. She said a tearfully grateful goodbye to Judy Blume, and Jackie Collins began ruling her world.

She lives with her high school sweetheart husband in the desert Southwest, and just wants to be a stay-at-home dog mom.

Her lifelong goals are to think before she speaks, smile more and swear less, and actually weigh what her driver's license states she does.

This book is the first book that I've read by this author and I thought it was awesome. This book is part of the Love Happens series Down to Fall #5. All books in the Love Happens series can be read as a standalone.

Love Happens Series.
Book #1 = Next to Me
BOOK #2 = Wrong then Right
BOOK #3 = True to You
BOOK #4 = Have a Heart
BOOK #5 = Down to Fall

It's been five years since Nicole has been with a man and she was feeling lonely. Until one day in the elevator she sees him, captain hot pants.
Poppy and Nicole have been best friends since childhood and shes totally awesome a real good friend who was always there for her and who she could laugh with.

Grady or captain hot pants is Hot and sexy with very cute dimples to go with him and Grady always tries to look on the bright side of life. Grady and his men are former special forces and they are all family together. Only he is holding a secret close to his chest.
Nicole and Grady meet in the elevator and they both feel a very intense connection immediately, and Grady loved that she smelt like peaches too. But for him It goes way back in the past.
(NO SPOILERS).

I thought the characters in this book were great especially poppy. You can feel the chemistry between Nicole and Grady burning of the pages they were red hot, with Flirty banter and cheeky dimples.
This book is a real romance story from lust to love and the story line is great. This book is the fifth book in this series.

This book is a book of heartbreak, love, sadness, hope and forgiveness and this is what Grady was desperate for most of all, the forgiveness from Nicole.

I'm glad to have found another fantastic author and can't wait to read more of her books especially the next book in this series. I will definitely recommend this book to everyone when it gets released.

Thank you to the author and publishers for allowing me to read an early copy of this book.

ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

This book is expected to be released 20t MARCH 2020.

Five years ago, Nicole’s life was forever changed, and she is still healing from the aftermath. From the moment that she meets Grady the chemistry between them is electric and is prepared for a fling but forever is not something she is looking for.

Grady is a member of the special forces who is a great teammate and a good friend. From the moment that he met Nicole it was love at first sight and although he wanted more, he was willing to accept what she could give. Especially since once she realizes the connection that she doesn’t know they have that may be all they will ever have.

Grady is so patient with Nicole while she tries to handle everything that has been thrown at her. There journey is filled with so much emotion but there is no doubting that they belong together.

i wouldn’t say this book is bad but there was so much in it that bothered me that i can’t give it a higher rating than 3 stars. like it wasn’t good, but it also wasn’t the worst thing i've read.

it was fairly obvious where this book was going to go and what the big “surprises” were from pretty early on. there was no point in it that had me shocked or going “what?!” the only thing i was interested in that was a “mystery” was

everything in this book felt like it went to extremes so quickly. anytime nicole and grady would be together it would start off fine then end with both of them yelling about how shitty they’re treating each other. other interactions like between grady and nolan escalate to grady grabbing nolan’s neck and it made me feel like i had whiplash and that i had missed something because situations changed tone so fast.

grady was a character i was happy to have as a MC, but it felt like he went from this smiley, happy guy to someone who kept insisting he wasn’t “a good guy.” he was also always obsessing over nicole and how he’d bend over backward for her despite her being horrible towards him and i just wanted to shake him and say stop.

nicole was not a character i enjoyed. her behaviour is disgusting and manipulative. actively seeking grady out, despite her constant insistence that they’re just physical, then getting offended and mad when he acts how she does. and getting on a high horse about him not calling her or his “impersonal texts” after her, again, making insistences that they can’t be and never will be more. grady does call her out on it but not enough in my opinion and it often gets quickly flipped back on to him for having “unrealistic expectations” and “not being a fuckboy,” despite her actually treating him that way. one thing throughout the whole book that really bothered me is that she always puts the blame on other people. yes, there were moments when someone else is at fault but anything bad that happened to her was always because of someone else.
she also has a really disgusting inner voice making comments like “between the two of us, he should be the only one with stubble” and “big boobs and breeding hips better be his thing, because that’s what she was graced with.” like what the fuck??

also when grady and nicole were actually together i found it really hard to read and the “dirty talk” was just painful and felt so forced and not sexy. i skipped most of it because it was just that bad.

two tones throughout the book that really rubbed me the wrong way were the narratives around other girls and war. i’ve read Wrong then Right, and Have a Heart, and it seems to be something JW likes writing about but the slut-shaming and “i’ll cut a bitch” attitude is straight up gross, insecure and not needed. every female MC always automatically assumes all women around them would basically snatch their guy and that any girl the guy is interacting with, obviously has ulterior motives and has no qualms about sleeping with him even if it’s obvious that they’re together. like i said, it’s just gross, unnecessary and boring to read.

the second thing that really bothered me in this book, that was somewhat in the other books but not as much, is the commentary on war and foreign countries. nicole straight up makes a comment at one point saying that afghanistan is “a place [she] firmly believed should be nuked into oblivion, removed from the planet permanently.” like what the hell, that’s a horrible thing to say! and disgusting too. then later when grady’s getting ready for a mission he pulls a freaking axe out and comments are made and then he goes, “tomahawks and throwing stars were more fun.” again, what the hell?? he’s talking about killing or maiming someone and has a method and device that is “more fun”?? i almost put the book down then.

it was fun seeing other characters from previous books but it did feel like towards the end it shifted a bit from being about nicole and grady to setting up two other books for two other couples. which was a bit annoying because it would have been nice to see more of grady and nicole together when they’re not being shit to each other.

Take everything you suspect about what went on between Grady and Nicole and throw it out the window. I tried to guess, numerous times, but the truth is simple-this authors creativity and heartbreak are unmatched. I absolutely adored their interactions, and how their history was woven together. I loved their genuineness-and this authors ability to make them doing something so simple so intriguing. I couldn’t put this book down if I tried-it was the emotional rollercoaster I never knew I wanted.
I absolute adored Grady-he was patient, he was kind, and he did what he had to do to repay sins of his past. He was so attentive, and everything I could have hoped for. He complimented Nicole perfectly.
This truly deserves more than 5 stars-the writing was flawless and exciting. A must read!

This is book 5 in the Love Happens series but can be read as a stand alone. It is written in 3rd person with a dual POV. Main and other secondary characters from previous books play important roles in this one, supporting Grady with friendship and tough love. Scorpio operations are in the background as the team runs special ops missions as private contractors. Their military special teams backgrounds and their operator jobs at present are important to understanding their depth of bravery and determination and also the brotherhood shared by the entire team.

Grady was one of my favorite secondary characters from the previous books and I have been waiting for his story. In previous books, I knew him as flirtatious and charming with a big heart; committed to his job and his team. What I did not know was the amount of guilt he was carrying from a mission gone wrong as a Green Beret or that the failed mission was the turning point that led him out of the Army and into Scorpio. I did not know that he developed an obsession with a widow from an Army Ranger KIA on that mission. When he sees the widow in an elevator, his obsession becomes more like love at first sight. Grady carries his secrets about that day, his immeasurable guilt, and a desperate need for Nicole's forgiveness for something she has no idea happened.

Nicole has her own secrets. Thrust into a media spotlight after her husband was killed, she told a story that was not quite complete. When she starts over and sees Grady in the elevator she falls in lust. She does not know that their lives were already intertwined forever on a day in Afghanistan five years ago. She struggles with her own feelings of anger, guilt and remorse while attempting to move on with her life, not expecting or seeking another love.

This story is well written and full of emotion. Truths are revealed slowly. The reader follows the present relationship of Grady and Nicole that begins in the elevator. Flash backs through character memories reveal the rest of their story in bits and pieces. There are many twists and turns. What I guessed in the beginning was not how the story played out. I was not sure how they could end up together. There were times when I seriously questioned the motives of both Grady and Nicole, but once all was revealed it made sense. I believe the tension added a lot to this book and I could not put it down until I finished it. I recommend this entire series. I find that this author's stories and writing stays with me for days after finishing a book. Her understanding of the military and how it can affect our soldiers and their families gives her books a very realistic yet emotional feel that stays with me.

I have been waiting on this one from Jodi Watters with so much anticipation, and boy oh boy, when it landed on my Kindle I was on this baby like white on rice!
Look, I’m going to say from the outset that I am a HUGE fan of this author and her writing skill. I have loved every one of her previous books and this new one is no different. I not only loved DtF, I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED it! To the point of saying it is my favourite of them all.
Grady is a man of substance. He is a man of strength. He is a man searching for forgiveness. He is also a man who is mentally wounded and is seeking a way to right his wrongs.
I was drawn in by Grady’s warmth and sensitivity and his fight to redeem himself, but maybe, just maybe, those snug fitting camo pants had some small impact on how I loved him as a character.
Nicole has lost her heart and is emotionally damaged. She has a deeply rigid stance on love and happily ever after and refuses to allow anyone to breach her walls.
However, she is not immune to the killer backside that she faces every morning on her elevator ride up to her monotonous day job. Surely a little fun can be had without her heart becoming involved?
I really liked Nicole. For me, she is sassy, drolly amusing and has a deep inner strength and vulnerability that belies the at times, harsh persona she portrays.
This story has some seriously entertaining passages that pull the chuckles from your throat and the laughter from your belly. But be prepared, as it will most definitely extract the emotion from your heart and the tears from your eyes. Have the tissues at the ready!
Down to Fall has heartbreak and devastation at its core, yet this author, with her deceptively intricate and delicious word placement, has the ability to extract from the reader their utmost empathy, understanding and indulgence, and in doing so, she allows us to feel this affinity with the characters that absorbs us so fully into the story.
Is this a Lust Story?...satisfyingly yes.
Is this a Love Story?…most definitely, beyond a doubt.
Is this a Hate Story?...heartbreakingly so.
Poignant, intrinsically sweet yet passionately seductive, Down to Fall is a story that will leave you with a lasting smile on your face and a beautiful squishy feeling in your chest.

Down to Fall

Down To Fall (A Love Happens Novel Book 5)
Jodie Watters

This is the first book by Jodie Watters that I have read, and it definitely will not be my last. I plan to go back and read the prior 4 book, as I am guessing they each are about a different Sexy Sixteen guy. I had not trouble following this story line, so I believer they can be read as standalones. This is Grady and Nicole's story, and it will take you on a journey of so many feelings. What's not to like about Grady - I mean he is Captain Hot Pants, he has sexy tattoos, abs to die for, a great personality and treats Nicole wonderfully. I am sure he is the book boyfriend of many. Grady and Nicole seem to meet on the elevator going to work, but is that really how they met? Grady wants a relationship with Nicole, but Nicole just wants 2 weeks of sex. Will Grady agree to that because at least he will be with her? Or will he decide to stand true to his beliefs and desires? These two have amazing chemistry, but is it just lust or is there something more between them? You will need to read to find out. Cash was this super amazing son of Nicole's. He certainly has a place in my heart. Kids are so young, open and smart. I loved that he had a problem wearing pants, but he thought nothing of it. These characters found their way into my heart, and now I plan to go back and read about the other Sexy Sixteens!

Down to Fall by Jodi Watters was ridiculously intense and emotional and left me with all the feels!

Nicole, widowed and left in the spotlight for who her husband was. She can’t truly move on and is stuck in an unforgiving limbo. Grady is also stuck in the past and needing forgiveness for what he feels are his sins, knowing that he’ll never receive it. One event changed them both irrevocably forever. Then a chance meeting in an elevator years later and an instant attraction becomes the start to a romance that can never be . . .

These characters! I don’t even know what to say. Nicole is so strong. She is finally letting herself live a little again after she has been through so much. She is hurt and left devastated by choices made and has anger at what happened, guilt that she wasn't enough and sadness that her life feels like it ended when her husband’s did.

Grady is being eaten alive by guilt. He is so wonderful and loving and trying to do the right thing even when he knows it is all wrong. I love how he is the one to push for more and for everything even though he doesn't feel like he deserves it.

Down to Fall was simply beautiful. A real roller coaster of ups and downs emotionally. So much so that I I felt wrung out in the best of ways and was left with a major book hangover! This was one of the hardest fought for happy ever afters ever, and it was beyond worth it. 5 stars!

Admittedly, this is the first book I have read in the series. It was easy as a standalone but I am definitely going back and picking up the others. I get the feeling that other members of the Sexy Sixteen had earlier stories and need to be read.
I love the way these characters are written. They are bold yet vulnerable, enticing yet aggravating, everything you want in a book. Nicole is a strong woman who has been standing behind Grady on the elevator for quite awhile. When he gives her a wink after a particular ride, she knows what she wants. But she has a lot to protect and would hide that no matter what. She has been in the limelight and now just wants to live a quiet life. Easier said than done. Grady is Special Forces and works on the 16th floor of the same building as Nicole. He knows who she is and her story. But he is not ready to let her know that. He knows they should be together but hesitates because of his secret. But once they meet in the hotel room across the street, he is ready to give her whatever she wants. He just hopes it will be enough. For both of them.
This book will have you all over with emotions. You'll be yelling at them to just say it and then tear up when they show their vulnerable sides. I was captivated by this book and I'm pretty sure slowed down my reading so it wouldn't end. Jodi Watters, thank you for introducing me to this series. I can't wait to go back and read the others.

Not only did I come to the Love Happens series late, but also to the talented Jodi Watters, but now it's fixed, and I'm here for more! This story has so much goodness in all kinds of different forms that I really don't want to go into a ton of details about it since it really would take away from the firsthand experience. Nicole & Grady met at work, which led to some super sexy time from the jump. See, she's been lonely, and he's battling his own demons, so it seemed like a good idea, well, for her anyway. Nicole never thought about anything past that one night, but fate is a stubborn woman, and Nicole won't have much of a choice, or will she?! There's so much angst, heat, palpable pain, and push & pull that I couldn't move until every last word was read in one sitting. Plus, there's a big twist or two, which only added to the overall emotional perfection of two flawed people, who life hasn't been kind to, and who are put together for healing if they will open themselves to it. So, hit that one click button to experience all of it for yourselves, as I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

Love Happens Series.
Book #1 = Next to Me
BOOK #2 = Wrong then Right
BOOK #3 = True to You
BOOK #4 = Have a Heart
BOOK #5 = Down to Fall

Down to Fall is the first book I have ever read by Jodi Watters. It is book 5 in the Love Happens series, they each can be read alone though. I have not read any of the other books and didn't have any trouble following this story.

Love Happens is about Nicole and Grady. Nicole, a widow who lost her husband in the military. Nicole and Grady meet at work. What Nicole doesn't know is that Grady is former military and has his fair share of secrets to share.

The connection between these two is intense and complicated and written so well. Nicole is closed off to any type of relationship but Grady was kind and patient so attentive to her. He was exactly what I was hoping for in his character when I first started reading this book. The tension and emotions between Nicole and Grady was wonderfully written and both characters were exceptionally well developed.

I would recommend this book.

Down to Fall is the fifth book in the Love Happens Series from Jodi Waters and my first read from her. It is the story of Grady and Nicole. Both have their own interesting backstory and their connection to each other is central the plot and pace of the story.

Down to Fall is emotional and well written. I was initially confused about Nicole's backstory and the link between her and Grady but found myself becoming invested in wanting to find out which kept me hooked on the book. I do believe that Nicole and Grady (aka Barbie and Ken) had a beautiful connection physically and emotionally which allowed me to also be invested in finishing the book as quick i could to see the development of their relationship which was a bit of rollercoaster but still enjoyable to read. I loved the addition of other characters and makes me excited to read all the previous stories and hopefully Carter's in the future. My favourite line was the one Grady said to Nicole about food and water (totally hit my heartstrings)

I'm sitting her flabbergasted, trying to figure out what to say that will make some coherent sense to you. I am simply blown away by this book.

Once I started reading it I just could not stop. After reading the blurb, I thought I knew what to expect. Boy was I ever wrong. This story has outstanding, three-dimensional characters who take you on the ride of your life. This is one of the most creatively written books I believe I have ever read...and that's saying a lot. It's hot, it's a heartbreaker, it's the highest of highs and lowest of lows. It's one of a kind. While part of a series, it stands on its own. I cannot wait for the next book!

5 ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Heartbreaking beautiful. This story has so much to offer, lust in an elevator, hunky hero, single mom doing it all, and of course love so heartbreaking beautiful. Grady and Nicole start their story years before ever laying eyes on each other. That's part of the destruction of their story. I adore Grady who Nicole dubs as Captian Hot Pants. All the men of that floor where he works are nicknamed with similar names. Nicole of course as a single mom cant just act on his invitation to grab a drink. Until she can. They start a secret affair that has all sorts of rules. He hates every one but wants to spend as much time with her at possible. What he already knows about her could destroy everything hes tried to establish with her but he puts himself out there anyway. Nicole is so strong. She never puts herself first until Grady. She has so many more things to deal with but protects whats hers. I laughed, i cried, i swooned and i loved this book.

A Fantastic Read!

Oh my, get you a box of tissues (because you will need them numerous times) and settle in for an emotional journey. This book has: The Sexy Sixteen (aka a group of gorgeous ex Special Forces working at a security company. Flirting in an elevator. A woman still dealing with loosing her husband in a war-torn country and an attraction to a sexy man she rides the elevator to work with most days. A man (one of the Sexy Sixteen) obsessed with the woman and dealing with the death her husband because he was responsible for it. A proposal of a two week affair for just sex by the woman where both start feeling this can be more. A cute 4 year old with an aversion to pants. The truth...then the aftermath. You are in for an amazing and emotional ride. Buckle up and enjoy the ride.

I couldn't put it down. This is one amazing series. Each book better then the last. Super sexy sixteen. These men and their stories will pull you in and keep you flipping pages until you fall asleep reading.
Grady and Nicole meet at work. Though not exactly how she thinks it happens. Grady has been infatuated not just since he'd seen her at work. But when he was in the army with her husband and the missions aftermath.
The push and pull between these two,the truths and half truths, added to the crazy sexual tension adds up to one extremely amazing story. Sad and sweet. Sexy and mesmerizing. This is another amazing addition to one of my favourite series. Dont miss out. Grab all the stories you can.

Down to Fall by Jodi Watters is book 5 in the Love Happens Series. This is the story of Grady and Nicole. I haven't yet read the previous books so for me this was a standalone book. Nicole is a widower who lost her husband in the military. It has left her with a guarded heart which leads her to avoid committed relationships but open to quick encounters. I did fee a slight disconnect with Nicole but is hard to judge how someone acts after a lost. Grady has some secrets that he didn't want to reveal to soon. But Grady and Nicole hot encounters start to mean more but can they work with with their broken hearts to be what they both need to be whole? This story did keep me turning pages for sure.

Nicole is a young women living in pain and heart break. Grady knows Nicole from TV and Social Media and news. She makes an offer to Grady for 2 weeks and then they say their goodbyes. Which Grady doesn’t want and with all of Nicole’s anger and sadness and heartbreak she can’t seem to get pass all the hurt. She makes this offer to feel again but not love just to feel again and to relieve some pent up energy. By doing so, Grady has feelings for her and is holding on to a secret that can devastate Nicole and put her back to the non living. Grady needs to prove his worth and that she is worth everything she has, but that’s not always easy to do when some feelings just don’t go away. This is a great story. I truly enjoyed it.

I haven't read the other books in this series. I took a chance on this because you didn't need to read the others and it sounded really good. Grady is hot and who wouldn't love him. Nicole on the other hand, I'm not sure on her because of how she used him and treated him. They both had lots to overcome. Their were lots of twists and turns I didn't expect either. I really liked the characters written in here too. But my downfall was the way Nicole treated Grady really but I did like the book. Each person deals with their own way in grief. Maybe this was hers. But their chemistry was on fire. Wow! You'll laugh and swoon and get angry but yes you'll keep going to find what happens next.

Grady will make you swoon

Great story with a twist that ends in HEA. I love how Grady, a sexy military guy holds out for love even though Nicole wants a sex only no strings fling. Reading this switch up on vulnerability made this story a great one, especially since the men in the series were more reserved alpha types. Alpha with emotions is a good way to describe Grady. Nicole is strong, intelligent, and fiercely protective of her privacy and heart. Jodi Waters is a favorite author because her women are always strong and not damsels in distress. I won't mention the twist in the story but it does have something to do with what connects these characters and it drives the story line.

This is more like a 3.5 star rating. I absolute loved Grady and the rest of the sexy 16 group! They were a great group with hearts of gold. They all had military background and were called off whenever they were needed. There was an instance that changed both Grady and Nicole forever. Nicole, I wanted to like but she drove me crazy and was horrible to Grady, yet he still wanted her. Yes I realize she had her reason for it but that's no reason to use someone and treat them horribly. He took her on fabulous dates and she was just awful to him. I also struggled with reading this book. It didn't really hold my attention but I think that was due to Nicole and how she was.

This isn't the first book i've read by Jodi Watters, just like the rest I absolutely loved it.
This is the 5th book in the series but can be read as a standalone.
Down to fall is about Grady and Nicole.
Nicole is a widower who lost her husband in the military. She meets Grady at work, with a guarded heart she only wants two week’s unattached sex. The more hookups the more he falls for her and the more she feels like she betraying her late husband.
It was a page turner that you didn't want to put down, you wanted to know more about these characters.
The series is a must read.

Down to Fall by Jodi Watters is book 5 in the A Love Happens series.
Even though this is book 5 of the series it can be read as a stand-alone,however characters from previous books in the series are featured.
Wow, Grady and Nicole have so much tension and everything is against them from the start. I found the story original and heartfelt. These characters were strong, strong willed and in a hard position for most of the book.
I absolutely adored all the secondary characters as well, special mention to Cash.
Great book.

Jodi Watters always gives us interesting, complex characters that are relatable, likable, and downright huggable. Grady and Nicole's story was compelling and held my attention from start to finish. what was meant to be short, hot, and scratching an itch for Nicole, means so much more for Grady. Both characters were strong and determined and both had baggage to overcome. This book as well as the other books in the Love Happens series are free to read with your KU Subscription and this is certainly binge worthy series. Solid 4 stars from me.

This is book 5 in A Love Happens series. This can be read by itself. You will meet the other characters from the previous books. Nicoles day would start with a smile. Riding the elevator with the sexy 16 was a great start of her day. This is how she meets Grady. She has been staring at his camouflage covered bottom for weeks wondering if his buns were tight and tan like the rest of him or if he has a tan line. Yum. I loved reading this book , the good and the bad. I couldn't put this book down.

Blown away!!!!
This is my first time reading Author Jodi Watters, and I NEED to CHANGE that now!! This is the fifth book in this standalone series, and now I need to go read the rest! What started in an elevator between Grady and Nicole is so MUCH MORE than a love story!
This book will have you feeling ALL the emotions! I cried so much reading this, but I also laughed and felt unbelievable love!
This will DEFINITELY keep you guessing right up untill the end!
I absolutely loved this book and I can't wait to read more!!

Everything you got

Grady has been interested in Nicole from afar.. partly because she’s gorgeous and sparks lust and partly out of guilt. He wants everything and she only wants two week’s unattached sex. As they continue their hookups, he finds himself falling and while she’s falling she can’t help feeling like she’s betraying her dead husbands memory. Very emotional and well written story with action, sexy times and sweetness. Loved it.
