Genetics: A Conceptual Approach
With A Conceptual Approach, Ben Pierce brings a master teacher’s experiences to the introductory genetics textbook, clarifying this complex subject by focusing on the big picture of genetics concepts and how those concepts connect to one another. The new 7th edition continues this mission by expanding upon the powerful pedagogy and tools that have made this title so successful. New question types, more learning guidelines for students, and an updated art program round out a powerful text, and improvements to the online resources in SaplingPlus give students the conceptual and problem solving understanding they need for success.

I HATE YOU I HATE YOU I HATE YOU I HATE YOU I HATE YOU I HATE YOU AD YOUR STUPID MICHAEL BUNCE AND HIS COLLEAGUES HAASTS EAGLE ON EVERY PAGE. I WANT TO MEET BENJAMIN PIERCE AND TELL HIM THAT HIS BOOK WAS EASILY DIGESTABLE FOR A RELATIVELY ADVANCED AUDIENCE AND THE VERNACULAR WAS NICELY DUMBED DOWN SO I COULD UNDERSTAND IT TOMORROW. I MY GENETICS FINAL IS TOMORROW AND I THINK IM GOING INSANE. MY BODY KEEPS WAKING ME UP AT 8 AM REGARDLESS OF HOW LATE I STAY UP. ITS YOUR FAULT BENJAMIN. I NEED AN 88-89 ON THIS FINAL TOMORROW. IF I DONT GET IT BE WARNED.

February 15, 2012I recommend this edition because it includes chapters on epigenetics which was missing from previous books on the subject. You can view DeGrasse discussing epigenetics on Nova. This book is straightforward and never sensationalist. It plods through data and description reliably. Though the varnish applied to Mendel's legacy is standard in all texts, there is a debate taking place as to the actual place he holds in the pantheon of genetic discovery. A simple monk in a garden working with peas, he discovered the heredity ratio and found a way to calculate generations, but, because of presentism, people of the present time projected more onto him then he deserved credit for, according to one write. In other words, much of the stuff he is credited for would actually confuse him and befuddle him. The reasons are interesting. I read a paper on it and will update this review with more detail when I get a chance.

I really just put this bc we had to read this colossal textbook all in one semester, and it drove me insane. However, I throughly enjoyed the material and loved the depth and width of the material covered. Shoutout to my professor even though she doesn’t have a goodreads; you made my semester (not the tests tho those were crazzy!)

Not bad at all as far as science textbooks go (though certainly biology texts are in general much more readable than say, chemistry and physics texts) and as a introduction to Genetics. Unfortunately not very up-to-date regarding molecular techniques.

…applying Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) to DNA samples from the ancient lung and lymph tissue, demonstrating unambiguously the presence of tuberculosis in the tissue of this 1000-year-old woman (Pierce 2005: 508).
Pathologist and Genetic Engineering- truly perfect combination, indeed.

Elaborately written, step by step description of how genetics view the biology. Though some information is out-dated and needs revision, its worth reading if you are bio-phile =P

Very interesting concepts, though very long. Sections on statistics etc not so interesting to me. Ultimately raised more questions than it answered.
