Listening to the Voices of Our Ancestors is a work of non fiction about heritage, intuition and genealogy, which was penned by author Megan Reilly Koepsell. Subtitled ‘A Practical Manual for Developing Your Intuitive Genealogical Abilities’, this interesting book explores the idea that our ancestors are the spirits who actively work in our lives now from the beyond, and that the coincidences and similarities that we find when we research our heritage may actually be much more. Including stories of the experiences of others as well as practical advice on learning to listen, the author explores how spirituality and genealogy connect and can inform our future choices and shape us as people.

Whether you believe in the spiritual side of the argument or not, author Megan Reilly Koepsell presents some fascinating case studies, as well as her own numerous experiences, that open up the mystery of our genes and their influence upon us. Ancestry is a pursuit that many people take up, either out of curiosity or out of a more profound desire to discover their roots and the influences which make up who they, and it’s that second group of people to whom this guidebook will truly appeal. The explanation of how to become more intuitive and receptive to the voices of our ancestors is a well worded and well thought out section which the author backs up with some enthralling personal experiences, and overall it makes Listening to the Voices of Our Ancestors a truly fascinating read that will get you asking deeper questions of yourself and your heritage.

What if I say that your ancestors want you to hear them.Sounds a little strange right? But that is exactly what you get to know as you dig into this book. This book, it’s contents are totally different and new for me. I thoroughly loved the book because more than enjoying I got to know a lot of things. This book is a manual that will help you (give you tips and suggestions) to discover your ancestors. The author shares her experience of genealogy and how it is difficult for genealogists to explain their experiences with non- genealogists. The book is divided into 20 chapters, each and every chapter is equally insightful.

The author through this book wants to let the readers know that how the genealogists experience various events in their life which makes them a step closer to their ancestors, although it is also seen that the ancestor chooses the person by giving various hints and ways so that his/her hidden mysteries or embedded stories are solved. In the first chapter, the author suggests keeping a journal so that each and every minute detail collected can be stored there.I liked the way the author explained how our ancestors want to reach us via our dreams and she asked the researchers to follow those dreams.

The author mentioned that how the researchers end up being in right place at the right time although unknowingly, and following your instinct should be the main focus. And she also said that asking ancestors for collaboration actually helps. Paying attention to the hints, sequencing, and understanding the dreams can greatly help the researchers. The book is full of the author’s actual story on how, where she found her lineage, and how she carried out the genealogy research work. A great and innovative read.

Koepsell believes if we are still and listen to the voices of our ancestors they will point us to information we need about their lives for genealogy. She feels that they want their stories told and lives remembered.

She tells of many coincidental findings or moments of intuition that led her to the information she sought. She also recounts many stories from other genealogists. No matter what you think of the guidance from ancestors, if you are a genealogist for very long, you will have moments of serendipity like she describes where you just “know” something, and then later find the proof to confirm it. Or a person will appear at just the right moment to answer your questions

This was a little too “new age” for me, although i too have had flashes of intuition where I was able to find specific documents, people, or graves. Coincidence or guidance? The jury’s still out.

I have been working on my family tree, as well as my husband's, for almost 12 years now. Megan Reilly Koepsell's ideas about our ancestors wanting to help us find them is thought provoking. Sometimes a thought will come into my mind about how to possibly find the information I'm seeking. I never suspected that "thought" came from my ancestors but I don't disregard it. There is much going on in the Universe that we don't understand fully. I'm open to intuitive thoughts. Now if "someone" would just give me a "hint" as to who my 3rd great grandfather is!! I'm waiting.

Fascinating experience reading this book

I have had a few similar experiences, hearing from my ancestors, and this is so validating. I never thought that it was something i could talk about with anyone else. Thank you for sharing these stories. I am propelled to do more work on my family.
