This full-color graphic novel, based on the Netflix series starring Gina Rodriguez, introduces kids to geography, culture, and history. Take in all the action, adventure, and excitement of India with Carmen Sandiego, the world's greatest thief! Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? Headed to the Mumbai, India for her next caper! It's up to Carmen and her crew to stop VILE from their evil exploits—but what is VILE after this time?
The art was super cute, and I liked seeing Carmen’s interactions with ACME. It’s interesting seeing this new spin on the series with her as the heroine instead of the villain.
My son loves the series on Netflix. I like that the book includes more facts about the locations depicted in the episode. Paper star is his favorite character! I think young elementary students will really enjoy this. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for this unbiased review.
I was given an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. Having watched the Netflix series before going into this graphic novel, I knew exactly what to expect of this story. It was a fun jump around the world as Carmen and her friends tried to stop Vile from stealing the Magna Carta. I felt the episode was broken down rather nicely to create a story that doesn’t feel lacking, though it doesn’t include everything from the show.
I appreciated the short introduction to characters, making it easy for reading these out of order of publication. Another good note is the short descriptors that make it easy to follow along with what is left out of the illustrations.
The copy I read was incomplete, only some pictures appearing done. Though, I have read the other graphic novels in this series and always enjoy the unique art style and color shading. I’ll look forward to seeing the finished product and its dazzling panel art after publication, and continue to recommend Carmen Sandiego to others.
Chasing Paper Caper from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Carmen Sandiego Graphic Novel series is based on a Netflix series by Greg Ernstrom. The disjointed beginning becomes linear as Carmen pursues the newly trained villain Paperstar who has stolen all original copies of the Magna Carta from a museum display in India. In addition to the absurdity of all the originals being on display at the same place anywhere the illustrations miss the mark by portraying India as a place devoid of people. The slight endnotes erroneously lead one to believe that Mount Everest is in India. The editors have missed the opportunity to teach geography in a fun manner by skimping on relevant information in both text and illustration.
Fast-paced, dynamically illustrated caper set in India finds one-time master thief Carmen Sandiego using her unique talents to recover all the existing copies of the Magna Carta, which have been stolen from a museum in Mumbai where they were on special exhibit. Continues the "Where in the World Is Carmen San Diego" tradition of teaching history, geography, and cultural traditions while searching for stolen treasure . . . but now Carmen is (secretly) on the side of good, not VILE. Fun.
Cute and I liked the drawing style, which...was it basically screenshots from the tv show? It was fast paced and fun and the little facts at the end reminded me of playing (and failing to finish) the Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego game on PC.
The narrative boxes were odd though and overused for describing the action.
I realized reading this that it's just a screengrab version of the Netflix series episode 7. On page 132 the bottom picture was particularly low quality (maybe it's just a printing error). You could just watch the Netflix episode instead of paying $11 for this book?
My first foray into graphic novels. My kids liked Carmen Sandiego on PBS and I always watched it with them. This is exactly what I expected and I liked it!
Is a fun book. Graphic novelization of the episode. Can't complain. (Welll, they probably could've done a better job, so I'll complain about that. But ya know.)
Carmen is up to more adventures in this tome. The baddie's look very much (had to be) inspired by Harley Quinn. There is some information about a country that might have been nice to have more. Or instructions on how to make the origami ninja stars the baddie uses.
This book was received as an ARC from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Children's Book Group - Etch/HMH Books for Young Readers in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
I was a fan of Carmen San Diego the cartoon on FOX way back in the 90s and now that it is not only a show on Netflix but a thrilling and breathtaking graphic novel series, I had to jump at the chance and see what is in store for the series. Carmen San Diego was abandoned as a child and found by agents of VILE that stood for stealing ancient artifacts and plan to overthrow the government and authorities. Carmen had to escape and ever since, she has been on the run from agents everywhere stealing artifacts herself before VILE gets them. I loved the artwork and it brought the show to life and after reading this installment, I can't wait to see the series on Netflix.
We will consider adding this title to our JGraphic collection at our library. That is why we give this show 5 stars.
