In a divisive world of mistrust and murder, there’s only one thing that matters growing up: you’re either in The Inside or The Outside.

While the Insiders appear pampered and privileged, the Outsiders know only harsh realities. Believing themselves to be needlessly deprived of everything the Insiders have, the younger generation channel their rage into a terrorist group called The Freedom Fighters, a group intent on overthrowing the Inside at any cost. Now the Insiders must watch as the world they love collapses around them while the government resort to increasingly desperate tactics to try and contain the Outside threat. When the latest initiative catapults one of the young into the heart of the war, everything is pushed to breaking point.

Loyalties will be tested. Lives will be risked. Their worlds will change forever.

As a huge fan of YA fiction I was sure that I was going to enjoy Inside Out right from the off, and how right I was! This action-packed thriller has it all; plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing throughout, immersive world building and characters that you’ll grow to love. Perhaps more impressive, however, is how all of this is packed into a novel of relatively short length – if you’re looking for a book to curl up with and devour in one fantastic sitting then Natalie Hibbert really has got you covered.

I don’t want to give too much away in terms of plot, because it really is a thrill-a-minute that will have you hooked from the very first chapter. Not only is the premise so unique and different to anything I’ve read before, but all of the characters were absolutely fantastic to read about, and, by the end, you’ll certainly be sad to part ways! It read like a movie to me in places; I could quite easily picture this on the big screen, which again is a true testament to Hibberd’s excellent world-building. If you enjoy action-packed YA fiction series like Divergent or The Maze Runner then Inside Out is a book you really won’t want to miss – I’m already desperate for a sequel! Highly recommend!

In Natalie Hibberd’s debut novel, we meet a dystopian world ruled by chaos. The defining feature of this chaos? Two factors of society labelled ‘The Outside’ and ‘The Inside’. The Inside is privileged and knows nothing but hate for The Outsiders. Their terrorism and wickedness make their lives deadly and filled with threats. Meanwhile, The Outside doesn’t have it much better. Unlike The Inside, they have nothing in the terms of privilege and are often on the brink of destitution. It’s a world divided in half.

More and more young people are getting involved in this war between the two factions and it’s getting catastrophic. The Freedom Fighters, a terrorist organization from The Outside, are getting plenty of members and it’s creating a strain for The Inside. Our main characters, Zach and Layna, are from both The Inside and The Outside respectively and in crucial positions of leadership. Yet, it seems like these two might have more in common than we think.

Inside Out reminded me a lot of The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton, with its gritty melodrama and sharp social commentary. The classes are divided by the fortunate and unfortunate, and the setup creates an entertaining dystopia society that long time fans of modern young adult literature will recognize and appreciate. Natalie Hibberd’s world-building is vivid and deep. Both The Inside and The Outside are set up to be very different places that intersect in the most curious of ways, and the stark contrast is easy to envision.

The setting was brilliant and the premise was interesting but I had a hard time differentiating so many characters. Don’t get me wrong, I loved our two main characters but I felt like their character development, and the story progress, was interrupted by the introduction of side characters. While this does setup a variety of characters that will be fun to follow as the series progresses, I wanted more time with our protagonists as I found them to be very interesting.

Inside Out is an impressive debut novel for Natalie Hibbard. This is a thrilling young adult novel that fans of dystopian science fiction will eat up. Inside Out is a very entertaining beginning to what promises to be a poignant and rousing series.

Readers’ Comments
“There were so many things I enjoyed about this book, but the best part was the premise of insiders and outsiders. I thought the author did a great job world building and developing the characters. Teenagers will love this book, particularly if they are fans are books like The Hunger Games.” Female reader, age 15
“This is full of a strong, young characters and a tantalisingly clever premise and setting. I think it could be the start of a fantastic set of books. I think in the next book the author should develop the futuristic world so the readers can really get to know it.” Male reader, age 16
“Packed full of intrigue and suspense, and lots of interesting and charismatic characters. I thought the government in the story was very similar to the government in The Hunger Games: oppressive, looking after the elite or, in this case, the insiders. The pacing is a bit uneven but it gets really, really good towards the end. I would read another book by this author.” Female reader, age 16

‘A thrilling adventure set in a compelling, dystopian world. A FINALIST and highly recommended!’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards

Inside out is a book that never disappointed my expectations as a big fan of YA fiction. It is a book that will capture your mind and eyes the moment you start reading from chapter one. Reading the book would not even give anyone a clue that this is Natalie's first work to be published. The book keeps one guessing throughout the book with plenty of twists and turns. This book divides the world into two, the "outsiders" and the "insiders," which propels one into a different world that is divided and dangerous at the same time. The insiders live in a privileged world where they enjoy social advantages, while the outsiders live in a desperate world that is more of barren and desolate settings (Hibberd, 2019). The outsider plans to overthrow the insiders using any means possible. The characters in the book are ones who you can love with their immersive world-building personality. Its unique nature makes up the building of the flow of a whole movie in a novel that is relatively short. If you are looking for a book to devour you and curl you up within one sitting, inside out is the novel to look for.
The plot of this novel is a thrill-a-minute which one can't evade from the moment they kick off the first chapter. All the characters were fantastic to read about, and the uniqueness of the premise is one that I have never experienced before. It was so sad to part ways at the end of the book. It was like a movie to me where I could picture places in my state of mind. This is a true statement of world-building, excellent work from Hibberd. The book is extremely suitable for anyone who enjoys action books such as Maze runner. The play made me desperate for a sequel.

I really enjoy the concept of Inside Out, with the contrasting communities of the Inside and Outside. Hibberd alternating between the more light-hearted, average teenager struggles of Zack’s friends in the Inside versus the dangerous and tense atmosphere of the Freedom Fighters on the Outside was one thing that I liked about the book.

With that being said, “Inside Out” is definitely for those who prefer plot over characters. Many of the side characters (mostly the high school students on the Inside) oftentimes felt more like names doing actions than actual people interacting with each other. None of them were really made distinct until later on in the story. Even some main characters like Zack and Layna were kind of flat and went without a distinguishable personality for the first chunk of the story. Many of their actions came across as uncharacteristic, as there was never really a basis for who these people were. The romance between them came very suddenly and was, as a result, a little difficult for me to personally relate to, but it was made up for with Lucy’s little crush and Liam’s predicament. (poor Liam, I hope he gets things figured out!)

The cliffhanger, though, left me pretty excited for whatever will happen next. What will happen with the Freedom Fighters? Is Layna safe? Will Lucy confess? So many questions to find out!

I felt drawn to the book's design and cover art, and on first impressions, it seemed like something that would grab my attention if I saw it in a bookshop or library. The concept and story sparked my interest from the beginning. I wanted to know more about Zack's work, and what was known as the Inside. I think the idea of the Inside and Outside was something that I found a little bit chilling and mind-boggling. If you read this yourself, maybe you'll understand what I mean.

I found that while I was reading this, I wanted to feel involved, and to feel as though I could have some part in the lives of Zack and his friends. At times, I felt very much at home with them, and other times, I felt a little bit like an observer; a fly on the wall.

I enjoyed the author's writing style and found the concept to be very clever. I would say this book fits into the dystopian genre, and I think in particular, it would appeal to a young adult audience. I read all genres, and my reading appetite has cravings for all kinds of tastes and flavours. By the time I reached the end, I found myself craving another book like this. I'd happily read about these characters again.

Inside Out by Natalie Hibberd is a thoughtful and emotionally engaging novel, especially to someone who is a huge fan of YA fiction such as myself. I particularly like the juxtaposition of the concepts involved, which the author had exemplified in the story.

Plot-wise, it flows smoothly and feels realistic, making it easy to follow and stay interested.
I also find Hibberd’s writing sincere and grounded, making the story both relatable and impactful. Similarly, the characters feel genuine and easy to connect with, especially in how they deal with their emotions and challenges.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading Inside Out and found it thrilling, with enough cliffhangers keeping me on my toes. Wherein, Natalie Hibberd’s writing is easy to read while still carrying emotional weight, which makes the book memorable and truly remarkable.

The premise sounded really thrilling, and I was really excited to read it!

I struggled with keeping up with the characters and would have loved a little more physical description. Their voices blended together just a little too much for me. I also would have loved a little more setting and overall worldbuilding to help solidify some of the differences between the inside and the outside. With both characters and worldbuilding lacking for me, the plot didn't have the impact I was hoping for.

I really love what Hibberd attempted with this book even if parts of it weren't to my taste, and I really hope to see more books from her in the future! I'm excited to see her grow even more as an author.

This is was my first book listen from Natalie Hibberd, and I found this book to interesting. The book is divided into 40 chapters which makes it easy to follow, it is important for an audiobook to have many chapters in order to listen to specific parts again.

About the story, it is the story of a divisive world, the world and characters building is done nicely by the author Natalie, you can imagine the world while listening to the book. The book can keep listeners interested from beginning to end.

About narration, it was a pure delight to listen to the narrator Rosie Akerman, she was able to do accents properly and was able to change the voice according to the characters flawlessly.

Final opinion: A 5 star listen definitely.

The story and concept are pretty good. Each event leaves me that kinda anticipating feelings for what will going to happen next. The shifting focus from Zack's to Liam's story is quite good too, even though, not gonna lie, I hate how 'Li Li' handles his crazy admirer but well, every time I read those parts it never failed to make me chuckle. As there's improvement to be made, to be honest, I think the story is quite dry especially the the middle part but still got me hook on as if there was a little voice kept pointing out questions and had my curiosity got the better of me. So, overall it's great and a-must-read book! I can't help but to wonder what will happen next.

Some books will make you read it till the end, even if you have some uncertainties about story or the main character. , This is because the writer knows very well how to keep up readers’ intention focused all time. This is what I utterly sensed when reading Natalie Hibberd’s debut novel Inside Out. I really enjoyed reading this novel, which lets us see life from another point of view.
I think Natalie will make her readers wait what she will write in the near future.
She has her own beautiful attitude which makes the reader involved with her novel.
Just keep up doing the great work.
From the novel:

Inside out by Natalie Hibberd is as YA dystopian /Sci-fi book I encounter a couple of days ago. I didn’t know anything about the author but I started to love her as soon as I finished reading the first chapter.

I apparently love reading books where the world as we know it is gone & has become a place where are afraid of what they don't know.

The story line was fantastic, and I had developed different characters voices as I read, and It was almost like a movie as I was reading it. This book was awesome and I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed The Hunger Games.

It keeps you on the edge of your seat until it finally pushes you off.

3.5 ⭐️

As a debut novel from the author, it was quite impressive to read such story and idea. Although it was something common, the way the author wrote about each chapter was quite remarkable. The characters development was also pretty well written but I might say that I was pissed off with some of the characters. But yeah that’s normal for me because every time I read a fiction, there must be at least one character that annoyed me. Overall, this was such an enjoyable read for me.

I was given a copy to read and review this book. All the opinions here put are all my own.

When I started reading "Inside out", I didn´t expect to find a quite interesting and original story. It is about a world divided in two: The Inside and The Outside, between the "rich and powerful" and the "ostracized".

A terrorist group called The Freedom Fighters, from The Outside, is trying to get rid of The Inside. Young people are involved in a war, and their fight will change the world forever. We have many characters, but the main ones, in my opinion, are Zack (and his cute relationship with a girl called Layna), Nick (who is part from The Freedom Fighters), Samuel (Zack´s boss) and Liam, also in The Inside with Samuel and Zack.

Many interesting characters appear throughout the story, which I found a bit short. I liked it, and how original it is. Th edevelopment is extraordinary, and I believe this author could create many different wordls without being clichés. I recommend this book.

We love dystopian books and so this one felt right up our alley. It was fun diving in to this world and you are taken on a roller coaster of emotions as the inside out unravels before you. There are plot twists and lots of action. There is also a great dynamic between the group of friends that really draws you in. Go Wild Ones!! :)

If you enjoy dystopian YA fiction, this one needs to be added to your TBR. This is a fast-paced, very readable book with characters that are brave and smart. The reader will find action, twists, surprises, suspense, and danger in the pages of this read.

I hope I can get my hands on book 2. I have a suspicion about one character and I need to know if I’m right.

Natalie Hibberd comes swinging with her debut novel- Inside Out, which is also a scorching heady hit of a read! As said in the book- "In a divisive world of mistrust and murder, there’s only one thing that matters growing up: you’re either in The Inside or The Outside." And that's the theme of the book!

The Insiders and Outsiders through their own journeys reach a breaking point of saturation, where the only solution that the younger generation of outsiders find is to overthrow the Insiders with all their due rage! What happens next, how lives are risked and how the whole world is transformed is for you to find out in this gripping read!

Natalie Hibberd has done a great job in thinking of a plot that just clicks in the minds of the readers! A good story concept is one of my favourite things that I look for in every book that I read and this one caught me with it's ambitious vibes!

The narration is synchronised and expressive of the pains and the journeys that the outsiders and the insiders lead! The book's writing has a certain rawness attributed to it which adds a charm of authenticity to it!

Overall, it was one good read for me! Really enjoyed this peek into the divided world! Wishing the author success in their future endeavours!✨
