9 Wild Horses: The Herd

Rate this book
In this true story you can learn how one unsuspecting lady accidently found a way to save some of America's most magnificent creatures -- our wild horses. Wild horses are a great subject for political discussions that go nowhere. America's wild horses are being destroyed every day because these discussions are just that -- discussions. After years of watching a specific wild herd Carol has learned that the wild horses don't need to be destroyed to reduce their numbers. They need to be managed with an eye toward the animal that allowed this country to become what it is today. This story follows Carol, who had absolutely no horse experience, as she retired and moved to the Okanogan Highlands in north central Washington State, just a few miles from the Canadian border. A short time after relocating from Seattle, she unintentionally became part of a small herd of wild horses. She watched them, lived by them, fed them, found homes for babies and guarded them against two legged predators that would do them harm. This story follows her journey through all the trials, challenges, friendships and sadness that comes from living with a herd of wild horses. You will meet each of the horses, learn how they interact with each other and with people. You will see how this herd has been stalked, rustled off private property, shot at, attacked by cougars and through it all stayed true to their family, their freedom and Carol. It is quite a journey and unlike any you may have heard about anywhere else.

This was an educational read for me. Something about wild horses and their beauty puts me on my knees. I didn't realize how hated they are and this book opened my eyes. They are a crucial contributor to this earth and belong here just like any other creation (well, not mosquitos). I enjoyed the author's perspective and passion to help these majestic creatures.
