The Kings of Men MC #3

King's Criminals

Rate this book
Fresh Meat In Prison
Charley Hughes never imagined he would find himself in lockup, but when King promises that his brothers-in-arms will protect him, Charley expects his time on the inside to be easy. He doesn't factor in Scar, his mean as hell—and handsome—cellmate. Scar seems to have one goal only, to get into Charley’s pants. Charley has never been with a man before and doesn’t plan to start.

Driven By Isolation
Colton “Scar” Hebb went to prison years ago. He willingly took the fall for his motorcycle club. Scar is as loyal and brutal as they come, but he's also lonely. The moment he sets eyes on Charley, he wants him. Charley is playing hard to get, though. It’s a good thing Scar enjoys a chase.

Predator and Prey
The longer Charley holds out against Scar’s advances, the more dangerous prison life gets for him. Between rival MC clubs and guards, he's constantly on high alert. Scar is rough and scary, but at least he's on Charley's side. The more time Charley spends with Scar, the weaker his resolve becomes to hold out against him. What will happen when Charley no longer wants to resist the attraction?

Usually, if I disliked a First and Second book in a series, there's NO WAY I'd even glance at book #3 so me picking up this book after the first two books was definitely out of the ordinary. I am so glad I did though, because this worked for me.

It wasn't the perfect book but I really enjoyed it and for that, I'll be giving it 3.5-stars! These two men started off on the roughest foot ever and though their romance is not typical in the least, I still felt that they had a solid connection. It might have been mired in crime and violence but it was a solid connection nonetheless.

Destiny's book is up next and since I loved him in this, I hope his book goes more along this line and not like the first two books in this series.

Good story!

So far, each book in this series has been unique, and King's Criminals is no different. I've got to say, I really enjoyed this one. It turned out to be sweet and romantic, and I liked Charley and Scar together.

Well done.

I received an ARC from Booksprout in exchange for an honest review.

I wasn’t really a fan of book 1 of this series but there were some characters that intrigued me so I didn’t mind giving this series a second chance.

What did I like about this one? Most MC books I’ve read focus on the freedom of being a member of the club and clubhouse, whereas this one is set primarily in jail, with very little contact from the actual MC. It put a different twist on the traditional MC romance read. The members inside share a different dynamic than they would as free men. They go from a club with a built in hierarchy, to a prison where they have to build their own. And though they develop a leadership inside they ultimately still answer to the outside club. Charley, going inside, has to fight for his place inside the new leadership. Even as a patched member of the Kings he doesn’t get immediate acceptance. I find that interesting.

The plot wasn’t overly complicated. Violence is prevalent but far from gratuitous. Much of it happens off page. So while this could have been super dark and bloody, it stayed fairly light.

I did have some confusion over the way Charley was written. Right from the beginning we meet Charley at his court hearing and he does not come across as a bad-arse member of a biker club. He’s scared to go to prison. Now, there’s nothing wrong with that at all. But as a reader I’ve come to expect MC characters to have a certain confidence and a bravado regardless of the situation they’re in. Charley is all but crapping his pants and felt much more like a prospect than a patched member. If he had been a prospect I could have understood his trepidation. But a full-patch? It felt odd. (Bear in mind I have not read the 2 books previous to this so it may have be addressed in those.) He did hold his own after the first third or so of this book but it still felt inconsistent. And Scar is a complicated man. Part pseudo sexual-predator, part stalker, part angry and complacent bastard. I found him hard to like for a good portion of this due to his constant badgering of Charley for sex, but warmed up to him by the end.

The first half of this was super slow for me. It took me 3 days to get halfway. The relationship does eventually evolve into something I would say is fairly romantic, as opposed to a convenience, but it happens quite late. I just wished that a lot of plot points weren’t glossed over to help move the story along. It felt too easy in parts.

Will I read the next book? Yes.

Upgraded to 5 stars on the re-read. I LOVE Scar (Colton) and Charley. Still hoping Brandon gets a book!

I'm reviewing the audio edition. This is the first story I’ve listened to by this author. I love MM and MC books so put them together and I had to try it. The story is interesting and kept my attention. The characters are good. The story flow felt right. I have not heard the previous stories in this series and this may have helped had I done so. My only negative with this story is I feel Charlie is a little too fast to “become gay”. He is stating he isn’t ….He Isn’t and them goes to it. I believe he might have been that all along but I think there should have been more mental back and forth and maybe more fighting it before all of a sudden he is 100%. My other problem is I didn’t feel the Narrator. He is probably good but I didn’t feel he fit this character. For a MC and prisoner I feel he is more like the evil villain in a child’s book. As it went on he got better but overall this is not his type character in my opinion. I don’t know if the author was given a choice in Narrator’s since I know sometimes they have to go with who they are given. That’s the reason I’m not really taking away points for the Narration. I will probably listen to more by this author to find out more about this series. I was given a free copy and this is a voluntary review.

I didn't like the MCs. The entire story had no plot or anything interesting going on. What was there was 50% cussing, 45% $*X and 5% miscellaneous. Scar and Charley had no chemistry and their $*xual interactions felt forced most of the time. I haven't read this series in a while but I remember liking the first two books fine. This was a big miss for me. I do not know if I will continue. I am curious who Aaron King will end up with though.

I love prison romance, add biker and it's perfect!
Scar and Charley have good chemistry together. Scar wants his news fish at first sight but he goes slow with Charley, nothing rapey or non/dub con here.
The secondary characters are interesting. I can't wait to read about Undertaker and Destiny too!
The story is well written, a lot happens, nothing felt rush. Can't wait to read the next book in this universe.

I was really impressed by this suspenseful prison/MM/MC romance & it is the third book in the series “The Kings of Men MC” & can be read as a standalone. The plot is well-written & full of drama filled with interesting situations & events. There is good scene descriptions & world building. The well-developed, unique characters are realistically flawed & are at times quite dangerous, one of the main characters (Scar) is rather complicated & displays a single-minded determination combined with a devious intention to obtain what he desires while the other main character (Charley, who is apparently straight) starts off being rather fearful & insecure in a new environment but continues to develop throughout the story-line to become a more mature, forceful man.
There is: a MC rider (Charly Huges) is sent to “Trident Fall Correctional Facility” & comes into contact with a brutal MC rider & fellow prisoner (Scar aka Carlton Hebb) who becomes highly attracted to Charley, a MC club (The Kings of Men MC), their president (King), a rival MC club (Warriors), prison guards, MC rivalry, twists & turns, intrigue, suspense, secrets, some humor, devious plans, emotional turmoil, attractions, danger, threats, enemies, conflict, violence, illegal activities, confrontations, memories, verbal banter, complications, manipulations, decisions, misunderstandings, disagreements, compromises, family issues, love, steamy scenes & a well-deserved, satisfying conclusion. I enjoyed reading this book & would recommend it to people who enjoy reading this genre.

Loved it

There was something so raw and authentic between Charley and Scar. I really loved it. It started slow, but it made total sense.
I loved how the trust builds up and how far they would go for each other.
The end killed me and brought me back together. It was amazing

Actually loved the dynamic between Scar and Charley. It is not a sweet romance but a prison one and I got everything I expected. And the fact that Scar was just himself till the end way great. I do not need characters to change themselves just to have a perfect romance.

Warning:

Also, be aware that the first half of the book basically centers around a dubious consent kink (Charley keeps saying no to Scar, but Scar pushes; everyone being in prison and Scar having a ton more power than Charley). Charley does indicate he’s interested and even likes that dynamic, but it is dubious consent. Be aware if that’s not ok for you. About halfway though the book this mostly stops and Scar is mostly nice to Charley.

No ages are given, but I’m assuming scar is in his 30s-40s and Charley is around his age but a bit younger than him. I could be wrong. Charley struggles with his attraction to men and says “I’m straight” more than any reasonable person should. He can be read as bisexual with a strong preference for men, and likely as homoromantic. Scar is “the king” of the prison and is gay. They butt heads for a while until their attraction overwhelms them.

I liked Charley quite a bit more once he was comfortable enough to be himself (a bisexual queer guy who also murders people on the side for his MC club and also for love, and is good at English). I also liked Scar but maybe not quite as much. He turned out to be a relatively good guy, and I liked his devotion to Charley and his friends.

I liked that even though Scar was considered the more powerful of the two in prison that Charley was also protective of him and had his back. Charley becomes equally possessive and protective of Scar, and the two of them enjoy this intense dynamic a lot.

The prison situation was basically halfway prison you would see in a tv show and halfway prison one might see in porn. Also the female nurse is bright pink scrubs running around with condoms was wacky (not the condoms, just how it was all presented).

When by over halfway though, after Charley and Scar had hooked up already, Charley still banging on with things like “Why would I need condoms in here? We’re all guys” started to get a little old for me.

There’s still some typos (including using the wrong then/than), awkward phrasing at times, and the similes are as usual really odd/too numerous at times.

Overall I had a great time with the back half of the book! The first half was a bit more of a struggle for me, but not bad. This ended up being a really fun couple! I appreciated they were both similar kinds of crazy.

I really liked Oz, the television show set in a prison that was on HBO some years ago. It was gritty and layered and I found myself drawn in. This story was like that for me. There were many things about this story that appealed. Both Scar and Charley are tough characters, they would have to be in MC and in prison. Charley took the fall which landed him in prison but didn't want to capitulate to Scar too easily when Scar wanted him. Good captivating story. I look forward to the next in the series.

Prison,revenge and loyalty

Two men both doing what they have too for family and there loyalty to and MC The Kings of Men. Charlie didn't plan on prison but he did what he had too for his brother and his MC family the Kings hes been promised protection when he gets inside what he didn't plan on was his massive cell mate and fellow King Scar. Scar's been in along time and he wants Charlie but he says he's not down with that he's straight so Scar decides to leave him on his own till he comes around. Charlie is being stalked by his MC's rivals the Warrior's and hes had enough with the threats, attacks and his cell mates harrasment of a different kind hes seen what hes packing forget that hill go at it alone but that's real easy when he tells himself that but when Scar keeps tempting him he's not so sure he wants to deny himself something he's denied his whole life. Can what they have on the inside survive the outside especially when Scar has a score to settle one that might get him back in prison. Scar didn't plan on what he had with Charlie being permanent but when he gets out he's all he can think about but he's quest for vengeance just may lose him the only thing he's really ever wanted for himself Charlie will Charlie wait for him if things go bad or will he just walk away from Scar because he's too much trouble.

A solid 3.5 stars for this!

I initially read this book for the prison setting. I really enjoy the angst and hurt/comfort and action that accompany a prison environment, but unfortunately I often don’t find many M/M books that do it right.

This book was one of the good ones.

I did have my issues with it, though. It took me some time to warm up to Scar. I didn’t like his initial approach towards Charley and it wasn’t until a bit into the book when I actually started to like him.

I also very much disliked that Charley punched Scar on multiple occasions when they were outside of prison. I think if Scar (the bigger and scarier one) did that to Charley it would be talked about more and made more serious, whereas when Charley punched Scar it wasn’t even talked about.

I don’t love that kind of violence especially because both times were pretty unwarranted, and also didn’t quite fit the Charley we came to know.

(Especially considering they went after a guy in prison for beating on his gf. That’s the same thing, bro).

Overall, I did enjoy this book. It wasn’t overly violent and I did end up enjoying Charley and Scar together.

Wow, I liked this so much more than I expected to. It wasn't perfect, but for a prison romance it was just what I wanted. I always get interested in a prison plot line but they almost inevitably disappoint me. This one had a good blend of realism (bad smells, worse food, fucked up guard/prisoner dynamics) with an interesting relationship between the love interests. One is out to seduce the other in a kind of way, or make him dependent on him so he'll agree to have sex with him. So I enjoyed a bit of the coercive aspect because I'm into fucked up power dynamics. But the seduced, Charley, has a lot of backbone to him and pushes back, which made their storyline more intriguing and satisfying when they do get together. I thought the end had too much melodrama, I didn't even think the revenge was very interesting/necessary. I've not read others in this series, I don't think, and biker gangs are a little bit of a hard sell for me, but I might try some others.

Member of the Kings Motorcycle Club, Charley, ends sharing a cell in medium security prison with Scar. While Scar clearly wants him, Charley is still sorting out his feelings. While there was some violence, this prison didn’t feel that menacing or real, and I couldn’t connect with either of the main characters, maybe because ... 🎧 the narrator did the story no favours: his tone and style were cartoonish, his British character sounded like a pirate. His voice might suit a young college story, but certainly not members of a dangerous motorcycle club or violent prisoners. I can see that reviewers of other audiobooks by this narrator have had similar issues so I’m puzzled why authors would keep using him.

This straight to gay story set in a prison was a total shocker and in your face. Took me out of my usual comfort zone dealing with m/m romance. These brothers led by King were sent to prison for various reasons. Scar one of the oldest of the crew definitely is gay and had no qualms in letting Charley (the new fish) know that he wants him and he will eventually have him. There were a lot of intense and brutal scenes but that just shows how real the prison life is. Well lets just say Scar broke Charley down to his way of thinking and they ended up being partners in every way. The story had a very satisfying ending and I wouldn't mind reading the other book in the series.

Just cell mates or more

When Travis (Eyes) brother Charley takes the rap for him it lands him in prison for the first time. But as a King he's been told that there will be someone on the inside to have his back.
And if Charley had a hard time coming to terms with going to prison he has an even harder time with his new cell mate and protector Scar.
Scar isn't just both bigger and more brutal, he also is very open with his desire to have Charley. And no matter how many times Charley says his straight his body tells a different story.

I really liked the duality of the slow burn between Scar and Charley and Charley coming to terms with being attracted to a man to the brutality and violence inside prison and in club life.

Ufa!

Another great installment

I am really enjoying this series. Charley and Scar aren’t my favorites of all the guys, but I did enjoy their story. There was just such acrimony between them at first. I’m certainly glad things played out the way they did though.

I felt for Charley. He just wanted to do his time and get out. Scar was the ruler in the prison world and no one messed with him. I liked how their relationship evolved and how Charley eventually accepted that he was into guys.

MM Series just keeps getting better

I really enjoy these books. This is one of those series that I love re reading and I don’t know why I haven’t left reviews before now. This book is set mostly in prison and it makes an interesting change from the other books. The two main characters have a very conflicted relationship and that along with prison politics and various conflicts made this a terrific read. This book in particular can be read as a stand alone, but why would you considering that this whole series is amazing.

I loved this book. Charley Hughes never imagined going to jail. King has promised he will be protected on the inside. Charley thinks it will be easy in jail. He didn't take rival MCs, guards or Scar. Colton (Scar) Hebb went to jail years ago after taking the fall for his club. When he sees Charley for the first time he wants him. Charley has never been with a man before and claims he is straight. That makes Scar want him more and he's willing to give chase? Prison life gets more dangerous the longer Charley holds out. Will Charley give into his growing attraction for Scar?

Great prison love story

I loved this story about Scar and Charley. Prison love stories and bikers just seem made for each other. Well written and plotted, very few errors, hot chemistry and sexytimes, great relationship development, interesting secondary characters, violent but not egregiously graphic. I know this is part of a series, but it worked well as a stand-alone for me. I’ll be looking up other books by these authors.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. The book is about a MC's world where they all are to have your back. When the warehouse was over run with cops. Charley took the rap for all that happen so he was going to Trident Falls Correctional (TFC). Charley was to have someone to watch his back. Kings and Warrors was the Clubs that where in there. Now would be time to get this book. I will be getting more from this author.

Nice look into a new biker world that I really loved reading about. It was centered around Charley going to prison and Scar who is supposed to have his back in prison. But things never go as planned with Charley causing problems and Scar falling for him. Can't wait to read more from this author and this series.

Solid 4.5*

I love this series and this one was no exception. I do like a prison romance though and this one was great. Striking a nice balance between the brutality of the setting and the hot, and at times sweet, romance elements, I can see myself going back and reading this one again. Great to see the characters from previous books as well as meeting some new Kings who I'm sure we'll be reading more about in the future. Loved <3

DNF at 84%
The sexual dynamics here really made me uncomfortable. One of the MCs was the designated toppy alpha male and the other was frequently referred to as "bitch", "hole" and "fish", that "took it up the ass".
Yikes.
Hey, if that's your kink - fine. But I was cringing the whole way through to the 84% where I finally got bored and skipped to the epilogue.
Figured I missed some drama going down in the last 15% but at that point I couldn't care less.
