Best Friends. Best Companions. But Can They Be The Best Of Lovers?
Joe and I were best friends when we met in high school. In fact, he was the only thing that made my teenage years halfway tolerable.
But I knew he wouldn’t switch. I knew he couldn’t switch. But there was always something a bit curious about Joe. And it wasn’t just his charisma. Or his looks. There always seemed something slightly furious in his chestnut eyes. Something forbidden… even to himself. It was a fury that terrified me. And I wanted to taste it.
When I saw him for the first time in almost seven years, I didn’t know how close I was to doing just that.
Somebody To Love is a standalone Gay First Time Best Friend Romance with a HEA and NO cheating!
This ends as a HFN. I wanted more of what Dan and Joe’s relationship was like, he spends 90% of the book without him. It was really frustrating when it could have been really nice to see that.
Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed the writing, there just wasn’t enough of a resolution it’s like they hit the climax, that moment where they’re finally going to be together and it stops. Dead stop. Pull the emergency break stop. That’s why I’m giving 3 stars - I just wanted more!
Van Cole's Somebody to Love is an interesting friends to lovers romance.
This is a story that spans the years of an extremely complicated relationship between three friends. Honestly, I was easily riveted by these characters and I couldn't put down this complex tale of these three friends.
There are three main characters throughout. Joe, Dan, and Lucy. From their school days to many years later, their choices continue to affect them. Their relationship is so much more than I could have ever expected.
This quote sums up this story well, but more importantly, it's a poignant thought in general. "...that's the funny thing about masks. You become so accustomed to them, you don't even remember who you are sometimes."
Told in first person pov of Joe as an internal monologue, the reader is easily transported fully into his mindset. By only showing his side of things, the weirdness and allure is heightened. In other words, this in the perfect way to have written this story despite it being long winded and overly descriptive. There are definitely times where it's too much though.
I love and adore the Upstate NY mentions. And, wow, that's definitely a random small town they picked. Super fun for this NY girl.
Somebody to Love is a complex, long journey towards love. This Van Cole tale is full of missed chances, fear, and complications. It's a fantastic illustration of how one's choices affect others. A super quick read, I'm definitely glad I read it but I don't know who I'd recommend it to.
Van Cole's Somebody To Love is like going on a journey with a young man as he starts to branch out and discover his identity and sexuality. From hiding his sexuality to finally announcing it. It's a journey through friendships and relationships, to finally finding what he didnt know he was looking for with the person he didnt know he could have. It's an interesting read with intriguing characters. I honestly think the story is more about Dan growing than about the romance of it. I liked the ending a lot.
This book wasn’t really good for me. I liked the description and it made me curious. But the more I read the more I had to say that I really didn’t lok. the way it was written. It was like an biography or a diary entry with some Dialoges. Than it was only Dan‘s POV. And just storys that happens to him over the years. How he became who he was in the end. And than when it got interesting it was over, so yeah if all books are like that this would be my last from him.
I didn’t not like it...but I didn’t like it. Which is odd. The story is kind of odd. The story was pretty jumpy - lots of loose ends and lots of flaky behavior from the the main character and vague relationships - so that you don’t really get to know the characters with any depth.
It was intriguing enough that I finished it - but I can’t say I really enjoyed it.
I made it to 63 percent before I stopped reading it. There's just too many long winded ramblings and zero genuine emotion for anyone or anything in this book. The author doesn't even put any emotion into what should be a traumatic experience in the form of a hospitalized assault. I just cannot get into this book.
I really tried to finish, but I only made it halfway through. It is written as an inner dialogue/ diary monologue. This made it difficult to push through and the entire first half is his remembering growing up and his difficulties as a teen.
Friend to lover, I didn't know what to think at first. But I stay in it and smile the whole way throw it. This book not like Van others. But it's just as well written as the other and tell I very good story.
This is a bit like a “Stream-of-consciousness” memoir. There’s nothing special about the people or places. They could be anyone, anywhere. They could be us.
I thought this could have been a better story. It seem it was a bit unorganized. The characters in the story were also very depressing. This is not a happy story except for the last line of the book.
It's not a romance, but one boy's journey into adulthood, self discovery and sexuality. It would've been better if we for example know, what - and why - have happened with Lucy, but it's true to life, sometimes we just loose contact, not everything is neatly packaged with a bow.
To me this book was so hard to follow. The storyline was a bit crazed and really off. It was tough to get to the finish. Some messed up characters, that's for sure.
