The beginning of the book had me feeling a bit skeptical and I wasn't sure if I should go on. The instant connection, desire, and the sex scene made me think this would be one of those insta-love stories that I dislike. But the next chapter took a completely different turn and I was feeling hopeful.

I actually enjoyed this book. It had an air of mystery to it which kept me wondering what would happen next. The characters were well-written, especially Martha. I liked her confidence and strength. The fact that she was independent and would not let another man take that away from her or treat her as less, made me admire her.
The supporting characters were good enough, but they could have been better.

The romance felt more like lust than love, but given how the relationship started, it is to be expected. I just hope it eventually focuses on the emotions more than the physical aspects. I do enjoy smut and in this case, I definitely did, but I prefer when it's an act of love.

The book brought up many questions that I want answers to. It created a good amount of tension and made me suspect the motives of certain people. I'll just have to wait and see if I trust any of them.

While I enjoyed most of the book, the ending pissed me off. The male MC is an ass and I'm annoyed at the way he treated Martha. I feel like this part could have been handled better. The lack of faith he showed in her after everything she has gone through for him, made me dislike him. (I want to rant more, but I don't want to give spoilers)
It ended on a cliffhanger, and I'm hoping he learns his lesson in the next book itself since this is a five-book series.

The world-building is decent. This is an adult fairytale series and a spin-off, so we see some characters like Cinderella and Red who were there in the original series.

Overall, I liked the concept and the storyline. I recommend it to people who enjoy some romance and spice in their fairytales.

Martha is caught by a Fae inquisitor when she uses magic without being licensed – making it illegal – as she tries to bring two lovers together. Taken to the Seelie court, her fate will be decided by the elders, but she has some time to prevent judgment if she can find true love before her fate is decided.

When the Fae King, her love who has been presumed dead, is discovered with no memories of his past, she may have a chance – or not? Will he remember her? Is he the true love it will take to save her – or could there be someone else?

Grab your copy and enjoy the story to find out Martha’s fate.

Martha lives her life as a human prostitute who can use magic to push people towards their true love with her love potions. She also uses her magic to help the people of Farrington in other good ways. Then one night while she was just outside the forest, she was caught using magic on a human, illegally. Darragh is the Fae King of the Seelie Court, the main ruling Fairy faction in the Farrington area. He and his soldiers are preparing for war with the trolls that are threatening their lands when he catches Martha illegally using magic.

The night that Darragh meets Martha he cannot sleep although it is the night prior to when his army marches to attack the trolls. He feels the forest call to him so he goes to pick herbs his soldiers will need for healing during the battle. Once he captures Martha, he reveals to her she is what the faes call a changeling, a fae child switched at birth with a human child. He also informs Martha that according to Seelie Court laws it is illegal for a magical being to perform or practice magic on a human without a permit. Martha makes it known that she is not aware of any of this—her being fae, a changeling, or the permit issue. Darragh feels immediately drawn to Martha and they share one night together. He leaves her with an amulet to remember him by and warns her to get the magic permit. Skip forward 10 years. Martha still does not have the magic permit and while conducting a love potion, she gets caught by a Seelie Court inquisitor for practicing magic illegally. The inquisitor puts a spell on Martha that if she uses her magic prior to her court date, her other spells will come undone and she is facing serious punishment for using magically illegally on humans. However, if she can find true love within the next forty days, the Seelie Court may be lenient with her. Sounds simple right? Not so since Darragh died in battle ten years ago, Martha still works in the brothel, she does not do “commitment” and does not think she can love anyone but Darragh. Also, she has a serious alcohol issue going on. What the heck is a pleasure fae supposed to do to get out this scrape?

I have mixed feelings about this story. One it does not end on a traditional HEA. The ending is an emotionally hurtful cliffhanger for Book 2. Two Martha is not your typical romance heroine. She is drop-dead gorgeous with a nice rack and a sweet disposition; however, she is a working girl throughout the entire book and battles the decision to end her work for the man she falls in love with. And third, there are a lot of secondary characters that are important. However, the reader may not be totally sure if the character is on the side of good or the side of evil. It can be confusing at some points because it seems some of the secondary characters switch sides. I enjoyed the flirtations dialogue in the novel. Also, Martha remained self-assured of herself and used her brain to try to figure things out instead of her womanly assets. I have a lot of respect for Martha. Overall, the novel was well written, was entertaining, action-packed (lots of internal and external conflicts), and worth the read. I am not sure if I am going to read Book 2 because Book 1 had a lot going on. I am interested in reading the previous novels in this author’s fairy tale retellings.

I love how Martha is an older woman (I guess), since she has years of experience in a brothel and now manages it. On the side, she was helping the Kingdom’s lovelorn with small spells to encourage romance; however, a Fae caught her in the act and brought Martha to justice. Apparently she broke the law using Magic without a license. That makes me laugh all by itself. They threaten her with imprisonment, but let her go on bail. A couple of friendly fae, though, let her know that Love’s True Kiss can keep her from punishment.

What a cop-out. Break the law, but there is no consequence if you find your true love? I had to ignore that to enjoy the book. Martha once loved and lost, so she thinks that the get-out-of-jail option is not available, but soon after she escapes through the woods, she finds her lost lover in the woods. He has amnesia. He does not remember being a Fae King. How convenient that Martha’s true love shows up just as she needs him. However, again, I realize that another option would extend the storyline, so I just kept reading.

Strangely enough, the plot is the high point. I was surprised at how intricate and clever the intrigue is behind the scenes. The story pacing is a plus. The story has a good ending, enough to feel finished but leaving enough questions that I might read the second one. The minor characters are fleshed out. However, I find the writer’s voice in this novel amateurish, as if she is targeting a younger audience.

The moment I loved in the novel, which is unresolved, is the point of her breakdown, where she weeps in the arms of the big bad wolf, Lucas. He loves her, and she unfortunately loves another. I just want to hug Lucas and say everything will be better. I would prefer her true love to be Lucas, even if I don’t like werewolf PNR, in general.

So this novel really explores what true love is. I am constantly guessing whether her feelings are caused by a spell, since she and the Fae King have instalove and insta-attraction. They only start to know each other’s backgrounds during the novel.

Martha is a changeling living among humans and running a brothel. She does not become attached, it's just a job - her heart was stolen one single night ten years ago by the Fae King Darragh, claimed dead. When she accidentally meets him again, without his memories and knowledge who he is, she is determined to overcome all obstacles and bring him back. But the Unseelie Court does not want to give up the power, and best is to keep the lovers separated at any cost.
Very nice fairy tale spin-off, with the magical atmosphere and intrigue typical for all fae. Martha is an interesting, independent woman, not ashamed of her profession, and with good heart (yet not so innocent means to help sometimes). Strong and smart, she was born to achieve a lot, and was working hard to reach it. Darragh, on the other side, has two personalities - one determined by his upbringing and life of the Seelie King, the other one shaped by missing memories, life among humans, and experience in the human realm. Seeing the two come together is an entertaining journey. I enjoyed the book a lot, although sometimes I was not completely satisfied with the execution - mostly by the breaks between chapters. Many did not feel like 'end of a cycle' and hence felt forced, disrupting the flow of the story. Nevertheless, it did not spoil the nice impression, and I would love to see where this story is heading to.

It’ll take more than a wish to help this fairy godmother find her own happy ever after.
When Martha, tired of working as a fairy of pleasure, uses illegal magic to bring two lovers together, she’s caught by a fae inquisitor and dragged before the Seelie court. She’s sure to be stripped of her magic if she’s convicted.
Lucky for her, she’s got some time before she goes to trial—she has forty days to save herself from the court’s judgment.
Only true love can protect her from losing her magic forever. But the man she loved, the Fae King, died years ago.
So what’s a fairy to do? Wave her wand and make a wish? That’s far too dangerous—not to mention illegal.
But all magic comes at a price. She just has to decide if it’s one she’s willing to pay.
The Fae King stars reader favorite, Martha, and is set in the magical world of The Vampire King. Readers, who enjoy magical fairy tale retellings, will love this steamy take of a fairy godmother’s search for more than a happy ever after.

This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believeable.
Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story.
Can't wait to read more of these.
Recommend reading.

NOTE: this is a book 1 and ends on the cliffhanger. There is no closure here.
Also BEWARE use of the amnesia trope in this book and apparently again later in the series, but I won’t be reading further.

No person would ever make this many bad decisions. I mean 10 years, she had 10 YEARS to do the one thing that would ensure that the inciting incident in the absolute BS of the plot would not happen. I’m sorry but if your plot could have been solved with a simple fix, like getting a magic permit, you have a weak-ass story.

The writing was cringy and blathered on way too much.
Wash, rinse & repeat the same information over and over, and over, and over, and over, and over again.
Too much inner discourse talking about all the questionable choices they made. Blah, Blah, Blah.

Honestly I skipped like 75-80% of this book, which is really annoying to me. I felt more annoyed than invested in seeing where these character were going.

while the story wasnt bad the execution was nogo for me

Honestly the plot is surreal an aloholist whore who creates love potions but doesnt belive in love. Wow.
Anyway I could (almost) ignore that especially the fact she was helping Cinderella (ok whatever) as there was a lot of things happening and honestly the Fae King returning from dead is quiet intriguing and all the background shemes.. however I felt a lot of time confused that why now you think abot that? Or how this comes here? Or what do you mean? I also couldnt follow the King’s eyecolor… dark, blue, dark, green. Or all of the above?
Beaides that there were a lot of repetition so overall found a bit boring.
While the end is a cliffhanger there is still 4 more books to go… I cant do that sorry… so I just skip now…

Wonderful story with great characters and storyline. I always wanted to know Martha's story. I read the collection of Three Kings and Martha was introduced in the first book, The Vampire King. Her life in a brothel and how she helps people really got my attention. Her life is not so easy as everyone thinks. Will she have a chance in true love? I know she deserves it. I really enjoyed this excellent story and can not wait for more.

A prostitute trying to figure out her powers and a Fae King

I love stories about Fae because of their beauty, powers, and strengths. This book does give you all of that and more. The author allows you to learn about each character, so when the story grows , you will understand why. Plus I have to admit the story is a little steamy at times. This is to be expected because the story takes place mainly in a broathol.

While I was intrigued with the story I found I felt like I was missing bits that were required to really understand the characters
Some aspects felt as though they were forced or out of character
The ending was less than I expected from the author i started reading the actions felt out of character and the obvious was overlooked by the character
While I would recommend the book I’d only do so after the release of the others my hope is that the author doesn’t do what cn Crawford did in their series “court of the sea fae” and swap love interests

First let me state that I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but this in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review.

Wow!!! What a good story. Many fairytales are mentioned in this story, all connected to Martha. Martha needs to find true love to save her magic, but she doesn't believe she can. She loved the Fae King, and then he died. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up

I liked the story and the cast, I just felt like the book dragged a little. At a point it felt like a 300 pager would have served more than the longer length. Plus the ending was just silly to me... It was supposed to be a cliffhanger but the breakup was rush and uninspiring. Oh well, I will read the next books in the series but I am not dying of anticipation.

Ok story

Good pace, and was kept interesting but could have been more. Some things are repetitive and the ending did not sit well with me. How can you love someone one minute and then dump them over lies after all they have done to save you. Oh well, still a good read. Maybe I will read the next book.

This first book in the series is a really interesting new adult fairy story. It's a great read and I really enjoyed it. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who likes adult fairytales with a bit of romantic action in them, as well as a real storyline too. I'm looking forward to reading book two to find out what happens next!

Good book hate the ending

I really dislike when an author is so unsure of their own talent they feel that have to leave you hanging. We’ll written except there is no such word as learnt. And I am not buying book 2, to be left with another unfinished story forcing me to read book 3. Loved the story until the end. Now I just feel like I wasted my time.

I really enjoyed this travel into a world of fantacy and a light drizzle of fairytale references.

Characters were easy to get to know, and shifting point of view spiced up the storytelling. I got easily dragged into the action and wanted to know what would happen next. Definitively a pageturner!

I can't wait until the sequel comes out! Slight drawback because of the major cliffhanger, and me not liking to wait for the next book to see what happens :p

I love these types of stories, and this one started out great, grabbing my attention from the beginning. The pace of the book and the twists and turns along the way will keep you going to the end and looking forward to the next one! Sometimes, it seemed like her prince charming didn't actually deserve her, and another might have been a better choice! I suppose that reinforces that love is blind! Nevertheless, this is a novel worth reading and I found it very enjoyable!

This story is intense and imaginative, I really liked the heroine, a half fae who worked in a brothel, and her fae lover, who has lost his memory.there are plots and twists and turns but I just hated the ending. It ends on a horrible cliffhanger, and I was so disappointed. If the ending would have been better, I would give the book 5 stars.

Ends on a cliffhanger

Good plot, a little suspense, great world and ends with a cliffhanger. My only criticism of this story is I feel like the cliffhanger was expected and one I'd read before. But if like Fae romances, I would recommend this book.

I loved this book! It was a really cool, interesting book. I loved the unpredictability of it, I loved the way the fantasy world was weaved into the real "human" world. I loved the twists and turns, and the way the other fairy tales were weaved into it as well. I thought it was incredibly creative! I'm impressed, and I can't wait to read the next book in the series!
