It’s been 80 years since Thorn split his people into 6 societies spread across the galaxy.
He’s known all that time a timeline shift was coming, and the role he needed to play when it did.
The mages of his world are ready, including his great-great nephew, Bud.
For Bud, living in the shadow of his legend relative hasn’t really been an issue, and his role in the timeline shift is supposed to be minor.
But Kali has an agenda, magic has its own agenda, and since Thorn is old, and tired of his people’s reliance on him, he too has an agenda.
On the heels of the shift, comes the Imperium, and the war with the Trixone.
The Imperium needs recruits, and especially mages.
Bud is a willing volunteer, but is it a good idea to merge a Thorn’s line mage with high technology?
Admiral Jane has handpicked a team, and Bud finds himself being …
Midshipman Spacemage.

(New info added at the bottom, in response to feedback and reviews.)
Timothy Ellis lives on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia; where he constantly battles with his cat for possession of his desk chair, Daleks do guard duty, and he keeps his sonic screwdriver next to his lightsaber and wand. Now there is a female Doctor Who, he eagerly awaits the sound of the Tardis materializing in his house.
He has spent his life reading and watching science fiction and fantasy, and has been playing Space Genre computer games since he used to be smuggled in to play the original text Star Trek game on a university mainframe, long before the PC or Apple appeared. Since 2004, he's written game guides for the Egosoft X Universe series, culminating in two versions of the X3 Handbook. He has also designed major mods for the various games, and dozens of mini mods.
He has been a farm worker, Antique Dealer, Computer Programmer, Systems Analyst, Operations Manager of a small retail chain, and Retail Store Owner. He is now a full time author, who still does Spiritual Healer and helper work.
After leaving behind the corporate and business worlds, he was opened to his Spiritual gifts. Now a Feng Shui Master, Feng Shui led him to Buddhism, Karma, the Tao, and back to western spiritualism. Since 2006 he has been writing spiritual articles and helping people via spiritual forums and Facebook Groups. His spiritual books include "Personal Healing Using Basic Meditation", "Life Harmony, Feng Shui in Plain English", '101 Tips for the John of God Brazil Experience', and "The Wisdom of the Ages is available for the price of asking a question" series of 8 books. His own spiritual healing led him to writing novels.
His first novel, 'Hero at Large', spawning the long running 'The Hunter Imperium' universe, brings together his love of the space genre, magic, spirituality, and cats. Now 10 series long, the universe covers 3 galaxies, 4100 years, and as at Dragon Imperative, 62 Novels, 7 shorts, and 2 companion books. There are 7 main entrance points across 10 series: Hero at Large, Admiral of Gaia, Yesterday's Spacemage, Crossover, Midshipman Spacemage, Old Magic, and Dragon Rider. Alternate entrance points if you don't need backstory first, are Adrift and Mage King, although Dragon Rider has 3 books before it about the dragons.

The fastest way to find out about a new release is my Facebook group/page, which get advance warning about 2-4 days before release, and again when the book is uploaded to Kindle; and my email list which goes out as soon as I have an Amazon page for the new book. Bookbub will let you know about 3-4 days after I remember to tell them.
I normally will release in advance of the specified release date whenever possible, so if you are a Kindle Unlimited reader, you will want another method to be notified of the actual release date, so you can read on day 1.
To many plot and logic holes in the story and world building along with iffy passage of time where it comes to merging all the different stories.
I also found the excessive and drawn-out mushroom treatment of the characters to be annoying. Same goes for the tech, magic and the combination of both in the story up to this point. I get that the author is trying to cover for his choice of intent based magic for the story, as that is super over the top type to go with and all. But the way its being gone about, just harms all the characters and makes them seem more dimensionally lacking, unimaginative and straight up stupid.
The technical writing is also suboptimal and in need of a lot of editing.
An excellent continuation of the Spacemage series with engaging new characters. This is actually a continuation of an entire story universe which Timothy has created, I'll admit that I missed reading the intervening books. This story speaks often of events and characters that happened in those other "non Spacemage" books. While I was able to enjoy and follow along without having read any of the other books. I definitely am going to go back and catch myself up. It seems that I have deprived myself of something significant.
I liked the previous series mostly but I bailed at the 25% mark on this first book of the next. The background world was too confusing for me to follow. There was the same problem with the first series and I was able to get past it. I just didn't have the energy to try to sort out an even more convoluted past-present-alternate future scenario.
That the MC from the first series has retired from world-saving and I lost track of the connection between the new Mage and his predecessor, didn't help. Otherwise it seems to be a good read.
It seems I made a mistake in trying to continue the spacemage timeline without first reading the two imperium series. The first several chapters are a god-awful mess that attempts to merge the streams (of these divergent series), with a bunch of magic doubletalk and much smoke and mirrors. In the end, the story doesn't really start until after page 100, when Thorn's nephew is a midshipman in training to be a mage-pilot cadet. At which point I was happy once more. So, two stars for the first third of the book and four stars for the remainder.
This series clearly has a huge backstory. The author points you at that backstory/series. But if you have read and enjoyed Glynn's Starship Mage series you will enjoy this series too. It stands on its own without reading the presequel.
I give 5 stars to Hugo/Nebula winners. All the other excellent writer's get 4.
I can't guarantee how good the writing is anyplace else in his future history. But in this book it is excellent. I am expecting to read the rest of the series with great pleasure.
When Thorn wants to retire, who does he turn to? His Great-great nephew, who just happens to be the only other mage in the family... can Bud fill the shoes, should he? Or can he be just a midshipman Spacemage?
Another Great story by Timothy Ellis in the Hunter universe. Can’t wait for the next lot of books.
Thorn the great mage is retiring. Can his great great nephew Bud take his place? Bud doesn't have the magical power of his Uncle but he is still in training. The narrative builds the current universe. I like the action, humor, and touch of romance. I look forward to the next book.
I read this book as my first entry into the universe built by Mr. Ellis, and I have to say that it's a great introduction to the characters and world as a whole. I may end up going back to read the previous entries, but I know that Bud is likely to be indelibly planted as the "main" character in my mind now. Great story, and a fantastic set of characters.
A cool New team with interesting personalities and skills. Can't wait to see what happens next and how they will grow and develop. Also wanted to thank Timothy for sharing a place where I would be happy to be there So keep up the great work Timothy and thanks
Descending from Thorn, Bud is unaware of the future or the past and how this will affect his effect on the universe. A humble beginning of a greater task?
A fantastic new story in the imperium series. New characters to root for what a great storyline for the series. I don’t know how the author keeps it all straight.
When I was a young one one of the first novel s I read were by Andre Norton Aka Anne Mckaffrey I was fascinated by her dragonrider series please forgive any misspelling
Enjoyable and interesting story. I look forward to watching the characters grow during their adventures. There's probably 20 related books so you might want to check read order.
Really good start of another series in this story-verse. Interesting mc and characters and fast action timeline. Lots of interesting magic adaptations to space fighting. Looking forward to more!
Love the magic side. Bud is a different charcter. Cant wait for him to gain some confidence and see where his relationships go. Great start. Want a l more!!!
I like the change in main character and learning about his abilities. While I would recommend reading the other Imperium stories, this is a good tangent to follow.
Absolutely brilliant again Timothy. Well done. I love this book. Lovely characters and fabulous story. Brilliant start to the next in a brilliant universe. Brilliant!
Another young person who is talented in some aspect of war/combat and does well. The characters are done well and believable. The action is miss my bed time good.
