I was born in Overland Park, KS, in the heart of Tornado Alley, and my life has been a bit twisted since. Actually, it’s not all that twisted, but I’ve always wanted to use that line. I grew up in St. Louis, MO, went to school at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and moved to Bloomington, IL, fresh out of college, after my husband got a job at State Farm’s corporate headquarters. I’ve worked as a high school/junior college teacher, personnel recruiter, office manager of a jewelry store, and, for the past ten years, as a lunch lady. I like to karaoke and attend rock concerts. I am actively involved at church and spend too much time on Facebook. I am the mother of a eighteen-year-old, and sixteen-year-old triplets, and have been married to my husband, Don, for over twenty-four years.
I have been a writer all my life. My first book, which was co-written with Mary Ellen Murphey in second grade, was titled The Black Cat, and was written on blue hotel stationary, hole-punched, and bound by white yarn. I believe it is currently out of circulation.
When I turned forty, I had an epiphany of sorts. I realized those bigwig publishing houses in New York were now probably run by people younger than me, so I shouldn’t be intimidated by them. At about the same time I was watching one of those award shows, and Jaclyn Smith got up to give a post-humorous award to Aaron Spelling. She credited him for encouraging her to go into acting, saying something brilliant like, “Reach for your dreams.” Nothing new. Almost even seems a little Jiminy Cricketish. But, for some reason, it struck me that night. When Aaron Spelling was thirteen, he was probably just like any other acned thirteen-year-old. But he worked to achieve his dreams, and became a household name. So, I began to write. Once I finished my first book, I wasn’t able to stop. I would rather write than do just about anything else. After all, you get to make people (characters) do what you want and design your own happy endings. What power! What a privilege.

How often have you shook your head at relationships that while deeply emotional, and truly heartfelt seem not quite healthy for anyone involved? Blackout by M.J. Schiller is a tale of love and deceit, trusts abused, friendships tattered and the ugly face of jealousy. What is a once in a lifetime connection for two people becomes a painful journey of alcoholism, failed chances and the frailties of the human soul.

What Faith and Eli have is a fairytale romance, until the monster called alcohol destroys their bond when Eli is unable to protect Faith more than once. Eli fades from the picture, leaving both himself and his unknowing enabler, Faith shattered.

Enter Max, once Eli’s best friend, now a successful doctor and the man who always stood in the background silently pleading with Faith to love HIM as much as he loves her. He is the best friend she could ever have, but can she love him with the ghost of Eli still haunting her heart?

Filled with brutal scenes, attempted rape, beating and drunken stupors, the weaknesses that can lie within a troubled human are all too raw, too realistic and far from a sweet and honey coated romance. For me, I was in turn angry, heartbroken and rarely relieved as repeatedly Faith enabled Eli’s illness with little care for her own mental health. Love should never put one in danger, it is supposed to strengthen and fortify a soul. It is something that makes one do all they can to be a better person.

Raw, gritty and dark, M.J. Schiller does NOT glamorize their love, she bares every warp and wart, as it could be in real life. She doesn’t ask you to like her characters’ actions, but love is love and the heart can be blind to what is going on. What Ms. Schiller has done is evoked every emotion I have, drawing me in a little more with page. I was invested in this tale, the characters and their lives and actions. That is what a good author does, no matter the tale they tell.

I received this copy from M.J. Schiller in exchange for my honest review.

OMG! I have read books by this author, but nothing as intense as BLACKOUT. I must admit that this is my favourite of her books that I have read thus far. This is a beautiful and gut wrenching story of love, pain and loss. I found it compelling and powerful. This is the type of story that causes one to experience a range of emotions. I found myself laughing, crying; there were moments of anger and at times I wanted to shout at the characters for the stupid behaviour they at times portrayed. I was so invested in the story that I had difficulty putting in down.

BLACKOUT tells the story of two friends, Eli and Max, and Faith, the girl they were both hopelessly in love with. I generally don't make it a habit to read books involving love triangles, as this type of situation usually ends up with somebody or all the parties being hurt. However, I was curious to see how this particular story would unfold as I was intrigued by the synopsis.

The first half of the book focuses on the development of Eli and Faith's relationship. It was my belief that these two made a great couple. They had a once in a lifetime connection. Just like all relationships that is worth its salt, theirs had its ups and downs. They were able to work through their issues and get themselves back on track. Nevertheless, a devastating situation would take place that would pull these two apart.

Fast forward to a couple years later, where we see Faith struggling to come to terms with her break-up from Eli. During this time Max came back in her life. A bond developed between these two, which led to Faith falling in love with Max. The question here is, does she love Max the way she loved Eli or is it a case where because of her vulnerability at the time and her history with Max that she was drawn to him? It would appear that Max has finally gotten what he wanted--his ever after with Faith. But then the unthinkable happened. Eli returned to reclaim his one true love. Who will Faith choose?

Max and Eli are as different as night and day, but they were both lovable guys. They each had their issues to deal with but they were able to overcome and turn their lives around. They were both selfless, generous and would do anything to protect Faith. It's hard to choose which of the two I loved the most but if I had to choose, I would have chosen Eli due to the changes he made in his life when he acknowledged his shortcomings and the mistakes he made. Faith is sweet and lovely. It was evident why Eli and Max were drawn to her. She is selfless, strong and independent. It was easy to understand the struggles she faced. Knowing that a situation is not healthy, but finding it hard to let go because of the emotional investment made.

The romance was beautifully written and I like the fact that the focus was not on the sexual aspects of the relationships. My only complaint is the manner in which the POVs were presented. It was difficult to determine when the POVs changed. It would just suddenly creep up on you as there is no break when the POVs changed within a chapter. I am not sure if this had anything to do with the format of the book as I am not sure if the copy I received was the published one.

BLACKOUT is a story about love, jealousy and friendships gained and lost. It touches on real life issues such as alcoholism, abuse and sexual assault. It depicts the strengths and weaknesses of men and women alike. If you like stories that addresses real life issues and that will stay with you for days, then get yourself a copy of BLACKOUT. I highly recommend it. -

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 6, 2015

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR: This is a COLLECTION not a SERIES, so there is no need to read them in order. Different characters, different settings. All involve main characters with "real" jobs (construction workers, waitresses, EMTs, shop clerks, etc., as compared to rock stars, princes, billionaires, etc.).

Max. The consummate ladies’ man.

He’s good looking, but not an absolute knockout. With Max’s charm though, he could have any woman he wants. Once he meets Faith, he doesn’t want anyone else.

Eli. He is a knockout.

But a dark past shadows him and holds him captive. Drinking dulls the pain, but meeting Faith makes him want to change all that.

Faith. She loves them both.

When a blackout brings her together with Eli, she’s happier than she’s ever been before. When another blackout tears them apart, Max is there to pick up the pieces. But can she forget the man who first made her whole?

*Contains some violence and sexual content.

REVIEW: BLACKOUT is a stand alone adult, contemporary, romance storyline from author M.J. Schiller that focuses on three people whose lives, loves and expectations are destroyed by alcohol, violence, illness and love.

Told from three distinct first person points of view (Max, Eli and Faith) BLACKOUT covers several years in the life and follows the building relationships between Eli and Faith; Max and Faith; Eli and Max. As the outline suggests, there is the potential for a love triangle, that once pursued, finds our heroine in love with two men-equally but different.

Eli Batronis is the man who will capture Faith’s heart but Eli has issues with alcohol that will affect everything and everyone in his life including his relationship with Faith and the possibility of what could have been.

Max Theobold is a bit of a man-whore but ever the consummate professional and protector; a man whose love for Faith never waivered as she built a relationship with his best friend Eli, and in this Max found himself jumping into bed with numerous woman through the years. When Eli fell into an abyss of dark and dangerous demons, Max jumped at the possibility of a future with the woman that both he and Eli loved.

Faith Robeson was a young woman who struggled financially; a diner waitress who caught the eye of several men including Max and Eli but Faith’s heart will also belong to Eli regardless of the damage he wrought in everyone’s life. A chance encounter during a blackout finds Eli and Faith on a path to love but the road is not easy or clear.

BLACKOUT follows Max, Eli and Faith through the years-alone, together, as couples, as friends-and in the end, Max’s past will catch up with his present; Eli will pay for his sins, and the pain he caused those that he loved; Faith will find the courage to move forward-one step at a time. The storyline ends with a happily ever after, and a happily ever after-for now. The epilogue fast forwards the storyline several years wherein we get a glimpse into the lives of Max, Eli and Faith.

The storyline premise and scenario was interesting and the three person points of view let the reader into the minds and emotional vulnerability of each of our storyline characters but I did have a few issues with the style of writing as it pertained to the uneven flow of the writing especially in the early chapters of the story. The use of first person POV is great for getting into the mindset of the characters but for many authors and novels it can result in the ‘telling’ of the story, an information drop, wherein the reader feels disconnected to the characters; the action is in the unfolding of the story-not in the character’s pontification or ‘reporting’ about his or her daily rituals and thoughts. In this, there were some definite issues with exposition and narrative summary-sometimes there is a curse to first-person narration.

This story was such an emotional one. Two friends, one girl and secrets.
It starts off with Max and Faith. They are good together, their chemistry is off the charts. They have that once in a lifetime connection, you know the one that is so strong that no matter what happens, that person will always and forever be the one, embedding themselves so deeply into your heart and soul no matter what.
Their relationship is great until it isn’t. Every relationship has its ups and downs but when theirs is down, it is DOWN. Max’s addiction ends up costing him the most important thing in his life, Faith. Max knows he needs to do all he can to be the man Faith deserves and he does all he can to better himself not only for him but for her and their future.
Everyone has gone their own ways, and years have passed...
Eli has been in love with Faith since the moment he laid eyes on here but she is with his friend Max. So he does what he can to drown his sorrows.. He sleeps with random woman to fill the void. When he unexpectedly runs into Faith, he is shocked to learn that she and Max are no longer together.
Faith and Eli have always had an easy friendship, and the more they hang out together the more their friendship grows. Finally finding his happiness with Faith, Eli is delivered devastating news, the same time Max returns.
Faith she loves Eli, not in the same way that she loves Max and this leaves her torn. Max is her everything but Liam is her now, until he isn’t. He makes a choice that will change all of their future.
In the end they all end up with a broken heart but happy.
M.J Schiller created three beautiful characters. Such an emotionally beautiful story about love, loss, fighting your demons, learning from mistakes and forgiveness.

Faith dreamed of getting away, traveling and seeing everything. Now the only thing she sees is her apartment and the few blocks to the diner where she works. One day she catches the attention of the construction workers close to her building. One follows her into the diner, into her life, and into her heart after they were trapped in her building's elevator during a blackout when poor Faith started to freak out from her own ghosts of her past. Eli breaks her barriers and she falls hard and heavy for him. He has a past that haunts him and soon starts to haunt her as well. Once his past begins to cause her pain both emotionally and mentally, she has to break from him. She's tried to help him, but she just can't take the pain anymore. Once she gets her life back on track, she runs into one of the other old workers, another friend of Eli's who she could tolerate, Max, who was always so kind to her. Max has finally achieved his goals of becoming a doctor and he sees a chance to try to finally give a go with Faith, but she has so many emotional scars and he can only imagine from what since she won't talk about it. He has love for this woman and so much patience he knows he can get her through whatever happened, although he feels it was Eli, and convince her she's worth loving. Just when things are finally starting to go good for Max, Eli pops back up in their lives. What's a girl to do? Her first love that was so hot it burned her or this new love that's nice and true, but not soul searing?

I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review.
This book!! The triangle ….2 men and 1 woman……Faith and Eli….the relationship is amazing but Eli and his addictions ruined it. I mean how long can you hold on to someone who can’t help themselves???
Max….he has loved Faith for as long as he can remember. She is Eli’s so he stays away. He is the carefree never going to settle down guy. He is drinking and having a different woman every night. He has given up on having the one woman he wants but when he finds out Faith is no longer with Eli….he has hope. The two form a loving relationship. No its not the same kind she has with her first love but first love is always harder to get over. First love always burns brighter and with more passions but that doesn’t mean that the first love is the better love to keep once it has returned.
This book is a but rough at times. The alcoholism was not at all glossed over. Faith and her enabling ways was not glossed over. The abuse and all that comes with addiction are hit head on. If these are touchy subjects areas for you, I think you may want to really consider if this is a book for you or if you should pass.

Wow!

Blackout is one of the best love triangle books I have read! A rollercoaster of emotions and everything it seems life can throw at a person, all collide into this consuming love that two men have for the same woman. After all the character and relationship growth throughout the book, author MJ Schiller does a great job bringing this story to a well deserved HEA.

(Request submitted by author for an honest critique)

I learned something new while reading this book. I had no clue construction workers were ever actually propositioned to do a little work privately, if you know what I mean. *winks*
I can see the appeal though. Their work attire does scream, "Hammer me." *smiling*

Ok, silliness aside, lets get to the nitty-gritty of this tale.

BLACKOUT is practically depicting every reason why you should never drink and drive, consume too much alcohol, or think a single drink is a good idea when you're an alcoholic.

Eli's drinking caused Faith emotional, physical and psychological pain. Despite every pain he caused her, direct and indirectly, she kept forgiving him. She's a poster-child for being an enabler.

I realize through the glimpses into the future everyone got their happy ending but in my opinion she chose the wrong man.
