Quite a strange book but one that really deserves to be much better known. “Mrs.Donald” is a psychological portrait of the female half of a family helmed by the titular Mrs.Donald. Violet, the older daughter is involved in an extremely questionable affair with an older married poet. Rose, the youngest is treated horrifically by her mother, Mrs.Donald as a servant.
Mrs. Donald is an abusive person and this abuse comes from her own strange moods as well as her terror of herself.
The book was published by the author’s daughter after her death which is great but unfortunate that it wasn’t published during her lifetime. I’m guessing it’s partially how gnarly the book gets at times as well as the tone of it.
The tone of the book kind of reminded me of stream of consciousness writing from the 1930s. At its worse it could come off as a melodramatic during certain passages but it also comes off like a sincere cry of pain and a real state of terror each character is feeling.
