After a hiking trip to a nearby park, Sadiq is inspired to start an Exploring Club. When a neighbor asks the club to create a scavenger hunt for the community's annual Fourth of July celebration, the kids are excited! But before they can lead others on a nature expedition, they'll have to do some exploring of their own.
Another good book from the series of Sadiq, who's family is Somalian and speaks sometimes in Somali. I like the series because younger kids can learn of different cultures and backgrounds, as kids in the US find themselves in a diverse setting both in school and in their neighborhoods.
There is usually a reoccurring theme in the series. And it usually begins with a club or planning around an event. In this case Sadiq and his family go on a nature hike where Sadiq liked the idea of a nature journal of what he finds. He's inspired to start a club with his friends and neighbors, to identify local wildlife and flowers. It then shifts over to a nature scavenger hunt during the 4th of July.
I enjoyed this book much more than the previous two I've read. I feel like it was a fun topic and that there is a small section in the back of the book on how to start your own nature journal. Tho the dialogue is not to my liking, I don't really like this type of talking back and forth, it's much easier to digest for younger kids this time around and it didn't lose my attention either.
This is a really cute young reader's book in a series. I loved the idea of a nature notebook.
I was really appreciative of the Somali terms, facts, and showing the illustration of the main characters. The interaction among the characters was realistic. From a nature hunt, it turned into a scavenger hunt with the friends interacting. The glossary was a plus, as well as the activities at the end. I liked finding out about another culture.
I read this short chapter book to my daughter and we both really enjoyed it.
Sadiq and his family are Somali-American and Somali words are included throughout (with a glossary at the beginning). The book includes a diverse set of characters. Some characters are also depicted with hijabs, which is not often represented in kid’s books.
Sadiq goes on a hike with his family and enjoys it so much he decides to start an explorers club with his friends. They have a field guide and try to identify plants and bugs they find. My daughter loved this as she also tries to identify every bug she finds 🐛 🐜 🕷 The kids also create a nature scavenger hunt list. Lots of ways to talk about and use content from this book with young kids.
We’ll definitely check out the rest of the books in this series.
Once again, Sadiq has brought together a short-lived club, this time to explore the great outdoors. They look around the local park and neighborhood to see what nature is there. They make a scavenger hunt for the block party which is a good activity to engage younglings in.
A touch of cultural awareness, a splattering of Somali words - and it fits seamlessly into a charming story. No preaching, no moralizing, just a story about friends doing something together and some of the kids happen to be muslim. I want to start my own nature journal now.
