With the looming threat of death now hanging over his head, Roy makes the difficult decision to leave the Crater. Unfortunately for him, leaving won’t solve his problems, especially those stemming from within. With Aika captured, Roy finds himself banished to the Wilds, once again powerless against the forces of Buryoku. Powerful forces are gathering, and he’ll have to make his choice quickly. Buryoku is not kind to the weak and Roy knows that better than anyone. Will he rise up to reclaim what was once his, or will he fall prey to his innermost demons and fade into obscurity?
Overall this book is pretty good but there are some parts that are poorly written. There are some things in the book which just don’t add up or at least they shouldn’t add up. Then there are parts where you might wish they were handled better I understand why the author did what he did but you’re going to wonder there’s been a better way to do this. End of the book for example there’s this major fight and it just sucks. It brings about a particular point that must occur for the story to advance but the way it was handled was bad. There’s a winner there is a loser and you’re just left looking at it like really that’s how it goes now. The same is true for other events in the story you look at them and you go really that’s what happened to this person or that person wow OK I guess it makes no sense but whatever. Now I have seen books where of this occurs and you get your explanation in a liter book take cradle for example lots of things thrown at you in the first few books and you don’t get explanations until later in the series which can be good but you have to write those scenarios the early scenarios of the book properly so that people understand answers will come later in this book that’s not handled well. Overall it’s a good book but it’s about 8/10.
I honestly don't know where to begin but I hope to cover it all. First the writing is pretty solid. I have grown tired of the main stream I love you no I love you but we can't be together plots of a lot of fantasy book running around claiming they are best sellers. Aaron's writing sucks you in to the point that when you get done with what he has written for a series that your disappointed he can't write faster! Then I look at the book list at the end of books and see the multiple books coming out in the next couple months and think this man is a beast. I have read so many authors in my life many are hard to keep track as they pump out the same garbage as all the others it gets monotonous. I was to the point that I honestly wanted to give up reading! Though it wasn't Aaron's work that brought me to litrpg but another author that I enjoyed who recommended him I have been truly glad I took the time to read his work. So if your tired of sparkling vampires, twitterpated main characters that long for someone they already have but can't have but really need to have even though they shouldn't BUT really want to blah blah blah barf. Give Aaron a try what do you have to lose!
Leroy is developing nicely. He still has his flaws and attitude problems but he is starting to mature and mold himself into a more reasonable and driven man. This book was great for Roy’s character development. Combat is still fast, descriptive, and brutal, when it happens, but typically Roy is barely actually able to do much due to him being so weak. I hope to see this change come next book. I don’t mind a character losing or getting beat but the only fight he really won in this whole book was with his mind. Which was great. But I want more. **Spoiler** I absolutely do not like what the author is doing with shah koya. I understand giving the MC a rival. But the author is relying way too much on plot conveniences, contrivances really, when it comes to this character. He’s saved TWICE while on the brink of death and offered help by someone who realistically shouldn’t even be in the same vicinity. Same thing with Roy. Hermit showing up suddenly to save him is BS but more forgivable than how koya is saved.
Can’t wait for the next book. Hoping there’s less contrivances
While you could jump into this series with this book as it is entertaining enough in it's own right, I would recommend reading or listening to the first one if you haven't already as it is an enjoyable book and you will appreciate this book in the series that much more due to a stronger connection to the characters.
This instalment strikes a good balance between the main character's progression and not falling into a trap of him getting things too easily without setbacks and by getting that balance right, the author increases our engagement with the characters, you are willing him to succeed rather than simply expecting him to do so.
The narration works well with this book, helping to enhance the listener's enjoyment of the book overall and ensuring that the characters are suitably distinctive in tone too.
Overall, an enjoyable listen that makes me look forward to subsequent books in the series even more.

Beat down again and again Herald Leroy never seems to fully quit
As he continues his journey of growth as a Power cultivator, Leroy or Roy, will find the challenges within as difficult as those without as he learns that Essence isn’t without its own desires. He just has to survive this world wanting to kill anything showing weakness. He will make a friend and finally trust before being betrayed in a strange twist by a man unable to see past his own pain and memories. Roy will makes a l good friend and find his ideal after he learns what that is and suffers immensely. It takes a lot of pressure to make a diamond after all. Oh and it appears all of his clan may not be dead…
Not quite as good as the first, still absolutely worth a read.
First and foremost I'll say it flat out;this is really a great story. Some of the sections feel like they're rambling a bit, and the editing could definitely use a bit more diligence. But overall I do really enjoy this world. I would say that a lot of the side characters tend to come across as nothing more than spoiled children or dysfunctional hate machines, but i still want to keep reading. Looking forward to the next entry
Continued with the series, Buryoku, from Aaron Oster. Book 2, Light, added more context to the world and characters. Action was increased. Both Roy and Aika get into and out of trouble. Some questions are dealt with, while tons of new ones pop up. I was expecting more martial arts in book 2, so I was a little disappointed in that regards. The action was there, but not to the extent one might expect.
Lazy, lazy, lazy. Lazy editing, it’s 2020, there’s no reason to have spelling and grammar errors, and there’s a ton of them. There’s a number of other errors to include using the wrong name for the main character, lazy. Then there is the story itself. It again is not very good. All around this “book” feels more like a rough draft that the author was too lazy to edit.
Enjoyable popcorn YA fantasy with Cradle vibes, though also unique enough of a story that it stands on its own. Found the MC Roy to be less stubborn in this book, which was one of the things I found frustrating in the first.
I finished the book way too fast and now I’m sad that I have to wait for the next. Everything great about the first book is multiplied into this one. Advancement continues brilliantly for all characters. We points of view are expanded and the story just keeps giving!
Second book doesn’t progress as much as the first but is still a great stand alone. Some cliffhangers and teases to the bigger world and impactful characters to come. Good read.
Light continues on the cultivation story in a compelling and eventful arc. A few twists and turns, promises of the future and it seems like the author has hit a better stride here than with supermage.
Another fantastic book. Has you rooting for the main character and leveling up with him. Can’t wait to read the next installment. If you’re considering reading this, do yourself a favor and start!
way better then the last one, enjoyed it a lot and can't wait for the next, really wish though that koya would die, i just don't like him as a villain, aside from that i enjoined reading all the adventures and mistory going on
I am really loving this series. I have always been a sucker for wuxia and definitely love stories where the MC transforms from an underdog to an OP bad mamba jamba!
Not a huge fan of stories that hop around between multiple POVs, but this was still fun despite that.
Unique concept with a Solid story, lots of action.
3stars is a very good rating from me. So far it lacks anything that makes the story legendary, nor does it crush your mind mind for days on end. But overall this series is perfect as a relaxing and enjoyable read.
Love this author when he writes without expletives. He weaves a good story line, keeps the reader active in the process, and while writing series, allows the reader to finish a book with satisfaction. Well done again.
I'm so sorry, but I just couldn't get into this. I love the author to death because he's so open with his fans on social media, so I'm giving this 2 stars instead of 1. I just couldn't even on this one...
I am not the best at saying how I feel about a book. But it was definitely worth the read enjoyed reading about Roy and his personal growth as a character.
