Rate this book
On the day she and her mother escaped her cruel father, Emma Washington vowed to never fall in love.

Now, Emma is a back-to-school PhD student with bigger and better things to worry about. That is, until one night, exhausted, slightly tipsy, and on her way home from a party, the glaring white light of a car comes crashing toward her, changing her life forever. Instead of waking up in a 21st-century hospital, she finds herself waking up in the backwaters of London, England, 1881…

Trapped in a time where everything she once knew is considered witchcraft, Emma discovers that Victorian London is a harsh world for a woman without wealth or status. She faces yet another life-changing twist when she learns her only chance of survival depends on the very thing she has tried to avoid her whole life—marriage. As if that isn’t bad enough, she must betroth herself to none other than the most powerful duke in all of England, the notorious and feared Lord William Blackwell.

But…what begins as a fight for her life might just become a chance to find true love.

Unbelievable on a Whole New Level
I chose this book because it was a pick for our book club and had a pretty cover with an interesting plotline. I have mixed feelings about this novel because it basically made me angry; although the story got better around Chapter 8. With any time travel romance, you have to temporarily suspend disbelief to enjoy the story. However, the heroine seemed a bit narcissistic and I had a hard time rooting for her in the beginning. Plus, there are so many errors and inconsistencies that I really couldn’t enjoy it until Chapter 9 or so.

In starting with the positive, here are some things I enjoyed about this story:
• The heroine was a STEM gal and I like that she was going back to school to get the degree she really wanted
• Having the heroine wake up in the poorer end of London and have to survive
• Emma using her knowledge of chemistry to help prostitutes
• That cell phone of hers had a heck of a battery life to last for weeks/the full duration of the story...I want that cell phone

Now for the things that bothered me about this story:
• Although this is written in third person, the POV starts from Emma’s view, and she thinks very highly of herself. “A beauty...noble beauty.... Back home, Emma had been considered exceptionally pretty, but here, in period London, she seemed to be a whole different level of beautiful.”
• Emma knows she has the talent of manipulating people and has no conscience about it, “If she wanted to, Emma could make a man believe that he needed her. Not out of love, but out of a want to possess her. Although she’d never used her dark talent, Emma was the master of playing games.”
• It’s mentioned in the beginning that Emma hadn’t been with a man in years...later in the same paragraph it says she dated often with many short-term encounters.
• Again, how could Emma’s cell phone battery last for weeks?
• Period or location errors/ lapses:
o When Emma asks, “Is this still..twenty-first-century America?” the person responds, "No, this is England. London, 1881, to be exact." Would anyone respond that way? How convenient.
o “...what brought you to our old, boring England?” (Would a person from 1881 England really say this?)
o Multiple times people of all walks of life saying, “okay”…in 1881 England
o Use of the word “homework” from the 19th century servants’ kids (lessons anyone?)
o To have read 8,241 books, you would have had to read or “skim” a book a day for 22.58 years, plus John’s time in the military, assuming he didn’t carry his books around with him during his term of service.

• Spoiler alert: Emma’s sexual experiences with John went from zero to sex in 10 seconds with no preliminary make out session, and if John’s a virgin, it would seem to me she’d want to do things a little differently….and maybe even teach him that taking your time might be a good idea.

I can see this author has promise. She just needs to hone her skills and do more research for period pieces, as well as contract the services of a good editor.

I can't fathom how mediocre this is!!! As far as time travelling romances go this is plain irritating.

Emma (FMC), is an American pharmacy technician in 2019. She is ambitious and wants to be a chemist.
Her father always hit her mother so she grew up resenting manipulative violent men. Frankly, she has one night stands every now and then and does not think about marriage.

With absolutely no fucking explanation she wakes up in the slums of London 1881. She was sheltered by a prostitute. The prostitute becomes her friend and Emma starts to think how to come back home.

She decides to pursue her studies in England (Chemistry field) until she comes back to her home and time. Her friend tells her if a woman wants to study in 1881, it's either she's a prostitute and has money. Or she marries into money to a wealthy Lord!!!!!???

So Emma picks the marriage choice. She asks her friend about the most notorious and womanizing Lord. One that she can manipulate into marriage so she can leave him when she times travel without falling for him or feeling guilty.
In a nutshell she wants a replica of her father.

The friend tells her about a ruthless Duke and Emma decides to play the role of a fainting wealthy American lady near his estate.

Only she was rescued by another Lord (MMC) this man appear as a saint. He is handsome, kind, feminist, a virgin, he rescue veterans from PTSD.
Emma falls in lust and in love with him all along getting to seduce the bad other duke.
Frankly I'm tired and can't get the rest of the stupid story into words.

Emma is a modern girl who finds herself suddenly transported to 1881. With no money or connections, she befriends a kindhearted prostitute. Together they hatch a plot to help Emma get back to her own time. Emma, who is very beautiful, will catch the eye of a local Duke, marry him, and thereby have the leisure and money to investigate her problem. (From reading other books in this genre, I understood that it was not so easy to marry a Duke. It seems a long shot for a penniless American, whose only friend is a hooker, to pull it off. But that was their plan.) Of course, complications ensued.

This was a quick and fairly entertaining story, if you just go with it. I read the second book in the series first, and liked that one much better. There wasn’t much fun or wonder generated by the time-travel aspect of this story. For one example, the reaction of the handful of people that Emma allowed to see her iPhone was underwhelming. We never learn anything about how or why the time travel happened to her. I also thought there would be more of a tie-in between Emma and the woman from 1881 with whom had swapped places in time in Book 2.

My review :

What a modern woman to do when she finds herself trapped in the past with no prospective future ...

Wow what a rollercoaster ride is this tale, my belly twitched all along this story.
It has been some time I have read a time travel story. I just loved this one, I would have loved it longer as I read it too quickly.
In fact I turned page after page, eager to see what will happen, my stomach in knots about every actions Emma decided to take.
I hate love triangles, sure it is not one as never Emma was in love with Blackwell but with two prospects and her hesitancy about them, I still had this strange feeling of cheating when she looked on Blackwell’s side instead of John.
If she might not have known the hardship of life from a XIXth century woman, she had known what it was to lack of everything, to scratch money and foods, to make do with nothing. In some way, it is what might have helped her to face her new fate.
Sure she accepted rather quickly her new lot, and the plot concocted by her friend is bordering insanity.
Why I might have loved this story to be a bit longer, to explore all the facets of being transplanted in a foreign world, but with this tale, the author already did a great job.
Emma is a resilient woman, if she is at time unsure of which path to choose, she already knows what she won’t do. And whatever life throws on her path, she does not choose the easy one, always trying to help those weakest around her.
John is the most honorable man possible, he fought to restore his family’s name, and once he is bewitched by Emma, he will do anything for her. Even letting her go if it is what she wishes.
He is a true knight, he does not have a shining armor but everything he does is genuine.
But because he is not all honey words and grand gestures, Emma is scarred by him, he awakens feelings she swore to avoid. But refusing to entangle him in her web of deceits, she might cause him and herself more harm than she expected.
In all, it is a beautiful tale of strength and love’s power.

I love me a time travel romance, and this was a pretty decent read. However, this is a stand alone novel so the pace moves pretty quick with the declarations of love, and romance, and what not.

Also I will say this was a very....sugar coated view of what would happen if a woman from the 20th century fell into 1800's England. Meet a friendly prostitute that is willing to put you up and pay for you for weeks after finding you on the street no questions asked? Ah yes let me introduce you to Lily

Want to get invited into a noble's home by faking a robbery and have them put you up, feed, and dress you when you have a flimsy story, no background, and just look pretty in a nice dress? Meet the Evergreens

Want to marry into a Duke's family and be accepted into English society as an American with no social status of your own or dowery, and not cause an uproar? Meet the Blackwells

So yeah, it was fun- but turn your brain off (even for a time travel romp) kind of fun.

Can we just take a second to appreciate the beauty of this book cover? It’s simple, yet you still can’t take your eyes off of it. Maybe it’s the dress, or the title font, or the girl sipping tea, whatever it is, we like it! Now onto the actual book.

Emma didn’t have the best childhood, and she worked hard to get where she was, but something was missing. When a bump to the head sends her back in time to Victorian England, she must use all the tricks she promised herself she would never stoop to, to survive.

I love a good historical romance. I love a good time travel story. I am a huge fan of Diana Gabaldon and Jude Devearux, but this one just fell flat for me. The best thing about the authors I previously mentioned is they suck you into this world they’ve created with their details and descriptions of the land our heroes or heroines find themselves in. That is where Denise Daye missed the mark. There was a lot of dialogue, and very little location description.

When I read a book, the way the author narrates locations and people, sets my imagination up so that instead of reading words on a page, I am transported and watching a movie play out with the most vivid and amazing characters and locations, telling us that Emma found herself in what she thought was Victorian England really did not do that for me, sorry Denise. It is with deep regret I say, put this one down and walk away.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Look, if I could give this negative stars, I would. How something like this gets published I don't even know. Maybe it wasn't officially published, maybe it was self published, in which case even worse. Because someone convinced this poor writer that it was worth publishing, and whoever that person is I hope Denise cuts them out of her life entirely because they are a liar.

In all fairness… I didn’t finish it. But I couldn’t read more than 3 pages without feeling like my life was slipping away before my eyes.

What a disappointment, it is so bad, I want to give you a zero, but that's not possible, so I give you a one.
This book had a concentration of blend, two dimensional characters, an uninteresting love story, and a cartoonish villain.

Trapped in time took me by surprise. I am a huge fan of time travel romance, and this one hit it out of the park. Emma, a young woman back in school to further her education in medicine, finds herself thrust back to 1881 London. Desperate to get back to her own time, she and her new friend Lily, a prostitute who saved her from a mugging, devise a plan to place her in one of the most powerful homes in England. To find safety and the freedom she will need to research how to get home, she will have to marry. And marry well.
But things don't go as planned, and Emma's heart soon becomes entangled with John Evergreen and his family.
Intent on marrying William Blackwell, Emma pulls out all her wiles and 21st century knowledge to try and stay a step ahead of the complicated game of society.
Filled with heart, history, and twists that keep the tension high and the intrigue vibrant on the page, Trapped in Time is a brilliant example of a true romance. I found myself captivated and engaged through every page.
The author writes with passion and skill, bringing her characters to life and the world Emma must learn to navigate out of the pages and into the reader's heart.
Brilliant work! I hope she writes may more.

General info

A woman, Emma, is hit by a car and wakes up in 1881. She meets a poor prostitute and with her help, they come up with a plan that will help her get home. Of course, nothing is easy, especially when there is a handsome lord who shakes things up.

Things I liked

I loooooooove this book! It has the romance of Jane Austen novels, but the lightness of a modern day women's fiction. The plot is interesting from start to finish and there's not too much of the stuffy, socialising that you usually get in historical romances. Of course, there's also the whole time-travel thing which makes this book so much different from a typical historical romance. And I think that is why I enjoyed this book so much. Of course, it's not all hearts and roses and Emma faces a lot of misery on her journey. That is also why the book never gets boring. It has modern day problems in a historical setting. And of course, the ending is brilliant.

Conclusion

To me this book is amazing and I will probably read it again someday, just because it made me laugh and almost cry. It's not heavy even though it's a historical romance. It's constantly interesting and nothing is too easy for Emma. All in all, this book is brilliant and one of my all time favourites.

There were a few elements that made this story just OK for me. First, there wasn't enough of the culture clash that I enjoy in time-travel stories. Second, there wasn't enough of a difference between the modern heroine's speech patterns and the other characters. The Victorian people all sounded like they were from the 21st century. I'm not a stickler for historical accuracy; if the author had even made up some Victorian words to show a difference, that would have been fine with me.

Despite those minor annoyances, I felt compelled to keep reading. I liked the friendship between the heroine and the prostitute who saved her. Also, this story did have one of my favorite things in a time-travel story, which was the heroine using her 21st-century knowledge to improve lives and endear herself to the Victorian characters. Because of this, I would be willing to try the author's next novel.

DNF at 25%.

Emma was so unlikable and very Mary Sue-ish. The sentence structure in this novel is so clunky and awkward. I don't mind a hard to like hero or heroine but the plot has to make reading their journey worthwhile. I felt like this book, for something that is supposed to be historical, was barely if at all researched. Some things, since the heroine is supposed to be modern, can be excused but even the historical characters speech patterns seem weird for the time. Readability, for the modern audience is a factor in books like these, but I've read books where this is handled skillfully. Not so much here. I only got to where Emma and Lily's bizarre and thinly planned scheme takes place before dnf-ing. There were many eye rolls before that.

I just really need a historical time travel romance recommendation that isn't Outlander and that is well written.

Finished in one sitting! I loved it. What a fresh breeze in the romance novel world. Things just never take you where you think they will and that is VERY HARD to do in romance novels as they all write the same plot again and again and again. Emma is such a likable character. I love her! And it has been a while since I read a book with a mentally stable male hero. There are really no flat characters in this book. The author is doing an amazing job making them likable, interesting, and believable. And the story is full od twists and turns.

I also like that someone finally didn't just write another time travel book in which everything is totally unreal. We really get an idea what times back then have been like.

I can't wait for the next book of this series to come out.

This is a quick time travel romance. I actually enjoyed the beginning the most. Emma travels back to 1881 and ends up a low part of England and meets Lily who helps her.
I did not enjoy how Emma handled the problems going on. She behaved more like a lady who grew up in the past. She would have more knowledge and understanding, I feel, if she was from our time. For a smart woman, I think she acted dumb when it came to ... I don't know...running away was really silly. Constantly going over and over her feelings for John became irrational.

I do recommend it though for a nice, quick and happy read.
Of course, there wouldn't be a story if she had just told John the truth after she met him...lol

I love time travel books and this one was a winner. When Emma gets hit by a car late at night walking home from a party she wakes up in 1881 England, penniless and with no skills to survive in this period. A woman named Lily finds her, takes her home, and they devise a plan to pretend Emma is a wealthy American and has been robbed, so they can trick Lord Blackwell into marrying her and then she will have money to find a way back to the twenty first century. The day they stage their act, instead of Lord Blackwell finding them after the “robbery”, it is John, Lord Evergreen, Lord Blackwell’s neighbor. Emma stays at Lord Evergreen’s home but Lord Blackwell is intrigued with her. When he finds out about the scam he blackmails her into being his betrothed. Now she as to agree even though she is in love with John. Can she find a way home before she has to marry Lord Blackwell? But what about her love for John Evergreen? I received a free copy of this book an am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is a fairly typical time travel romance with pharmaceutical aspects, but there is some annoying confusion in the organization of Chapter 7. Though the author has a sequel, I will not be trying it. This is not a bad book, but I am just done with unreality for now.

ONE IMPRESSIVE ADVENTURE!!!
Roll with it! Denise lines it up, loosens the tension and nails the target, running the show and calling the shots, booting this little fella to life brilliantly. A swirling throng of unexpected events, throws this baby into the eye of the storm, blasting it into a tailspin with an astonishing culmination. Bumbling through the trials and tribulations, along with shocking twists, sharp turns and crisp lines, testing our characters in ways they could have never anticipated. Combating the drama, intrigue, turmoil, uncertainty and soaring suspense, makes for one thrilling adventure. Add a little magic, undercurrents, perplexing situations and a boatload of mishaps, propels this baby to a whole new level. The attraction and chemistry sizzles from the pages, alluring and mesmerizing, binding them together perfectly. The characters are authentic and realistic with qualities and traits that transform into outstanding personalities. The scenes are abundantly detailed and descriptive as to give you a full understanding and realism that flows through smoothly. Remarkable job Denise, thanks for sharing this little fella with us.

Loved it. It is exciting, surprising, emotional, romantic and much more. Imagine getting into an accident and waking up many centuries in the past. And the only way to avoid all the drama and no money and so on you have to do something you have always said you won't. Marry a very well to do influential earl. Now that would be a shock in more ways than one. I received a review copy and voluntarily review it.

This book was amazing! The scenes were detailed, the characters well described, the amount of suspense as well was amazing. I couldn't put this book down! Every time I turned the page, I was more into the world than anything! Even though the heroine in the story had to abide by 19th century rules, that didn't stop her from wanting what she wanted in life. This book is really historically accurate in regards to what people really believed to be true back then. Those same beliefs are still true today which makes this story relatable. The Duke in the story is very harsh but he comes to terms with reality and what love really is. This story is a great one to read if you are one of those people who want to believe in love, romance and to believe in the impossible. I am one of those people who believes all of that and this book is a great way to believe that.

If you want a really good book to keep you reading till the sun comes up, this is the book for you! I cannot wait to read more of Denise Daye's books! She is now one of my favourite authors!!!

A charming love story across 3 centuries

After reading the entire Outlander series I’m am fascinated with time travel novels. I had just finished reading The Time Traveler’s Wife when Trapped in Time caught my eye. It is well written with interesting characters living in different centuries. I enjoyed every word of it and look forward to the next book in the series.
