When I'd first heart about the first novel in the series, The Shadows of Atlantis, I detected early on a fusing of fantasy with science fiction, something i later cfirmed in conversations with Ammar Al-Masry. As much hard SF as there is in the trilogy, you can tell that Ammar's instincts move towards fantasy and epics and myths, from Arabic history and elsewhere. Morality plays and the lessons of history are more important to him than hard science. Ammar's ambition was to create a whole knew subgenre and I'm glad to say this thirrd and non-final novel is a crowning achievement in that regard.

Another positive and distinctive trait is how suitable Arabic is to science fiction, a language that is pictureque and epic and emotive, ideally suited for space opera as well as fairy tales.

My only qulam about the ovel is how enourmously big it is, with cramming of characters and subplots and explanations and recappings from previous novels. That being aid, Arabic audiences thrive on such features, so who is complaining!
