Michelle Obama, Jennifer Lopez, Dawn French, Helen Mirren and Annie Lennox didn’t get the memo that you’re meant to become sexless, invisible and dull when you hit half a century, and neither should we. Tracey Cox’s book, Great Sex at 50 is here to address the challenges that face us sexually in our fifties, sixties and beyond…
Fifty-plus looks nothing like it used to. Fitter, healthier, many of us hit half a century with little sign of slowing down. And yet…there's no denying that something happens to us sexually at 50. The menopause brings with it a whole slew of challenges, from bottomed-out libidos to painful sex, weight gain and body image issues. Many men grapple with erectile dysfunction and the mixed blessing that is Viagra. Toss in dodgy knees, stiff backs and fatigue and sex can become a source of stress rather than pleasure.
Other challenges go beyond the physical: how do you ignite desire after decades with the same person? And what if you (or your partner) simply no longer wants to have sex? Happily, information and enthusiasm are all it takes to reclaim a robust sex life, whatever your situation.
Let international sex expert Tracey Cox navigate you through what's actually happening to your body and what you can do about it. She'll show you how to age-proof your libido and stop comparing the sex you had when you were young with the sex you have now; how to arouse yourself and your partner (hello, sex toys!), how to flirt (remember?), how to create the perfect conditions for sex, what to do when infidelity visits, how to navigate sex when you're fifty- (or sixty- or seventy-) something and single, and so much more.
Using a blend of research, case histories and personal anecdotes, Great Sex Starts at 50 is real, reassuring, honest, funny and most of all empowering. This is not about trying to stay young, or turning back the clock-it's about being the best version of yourself so you can live the second half of your life as happily as the first.
Tracey Cox (born 1961, Exeter, Devon, England) is a non fiction author who specializes in books on dating, sex and relationships. She is the author of many best selling titles.
Great Sex Starts At 50 is a very well written, easy to read and well formatted resource book for those looking to revamp their relationship. I am not quite 50 yet but the advice in this book certainly relates to me as someone who has been married for at least two decades and want some advice to revitalize and spice up the passion after being with the same person this long.
This book is also a great resource for medical professionals, mature readers, and those that would like to keep their relationship just as passionate as day one!
This book is written for both men and women that is lively, fun, funny, and also quite an empowering read with great advise and full of usable information.
I love the lists in this book and there are tons of them that help reinforce information with practical advice.
Using research and real life examples, the book is completely relatable and useful! Also author Tracey Cox is a world renowned expert on sex and relationships and she definitely knows what she is talking about!
I highly recommend this for anyone 50 or younger or older. We could all use this amazing book.
This is a sex manual for people 50 and over. The book is informative and funny because it acknowledges the physical challenges people face as they get older, especially with certain positions. This book makes you feel like you're just having a conversation with a friend who knows more about sex than you do. It's not the sort of book to read cover to cover; it's more about addressing the issues you may have at the moment.
There are many other suggestions in the book on how to get out of a sexual rut to keep your relationship healthy. It also touches on the physiological benefits of sex that can set off the production of essential hormones like dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins that do wonderful things for your body. Sex also promotes an emotional closeness with your partner, and the book offers different ways to discuss sex with your partner, what to say and what not to say. But you don't have to be 50 to benefit from this book. All of the information is relevant to anyone because it's not just sex advice; it's relationship advice too.
I still have a few years to go before I get to 50, but I found this book to be very useful. Let's be honest, we will all get there some day so it's best to be prepared. This book is not just about sex though. It's about everything that comes along with long term relationships. There is advice that I think people of all ages would find helpful after being with the same person for so long. It's talks about the physical changes that come along with aging and sex, but also dives into intimacy and emotional needs as well. This definitely normalized some of the things that I have been feeling and that was a huge relief. It's easy to read and incorporates some real life scenarious from other people.
With a twinkle in his eye, my husband gave me this book on my 50th birthday. I've picked it up and put it down a few time over the last several months. First of all, the title is a huge misnomer. A lot of what Tracey Cox shares about sex after 50 definitely doesn't sound great. That said, much of her information is liberating and hopeful, sort of what our 50s promise to us as a whole. I do think there's quite a lot of repetition in the book, and that got old. Still, I'm glad I read it, and I'd recommend it to anyone (male or female) who is concerned about how aging might affect your sex life.
Honest, straightforward, and encouraging with a good dose of humor, this will definitely have you feeling more confident in your sexuality no matter your age. Sensible and creative approaches to all the usual issues that come with aging, including lots of help with how to talk about it all with your partner. We’re including Great Sex Starts at 59 in the resources section of our upcoming book, Wild Monogamy.
I write rom-coms for the 40+ crowd and as a result, my friends give me a lot of bizarre things to read. Many of the stuff is pretty ho hum. However, with this book by Tracey Cox, I actually learned a lot. Part of her book is common sense, which aint so common these days, but much of her book is downright eye-opening. Well written, practical read for both women and men. Learn and enjoy!
A great, practical, informative and non-judgemental read. I’m in my early forties but found it helpful r.e difficult conversations and things to be aware of as I get older.
I’ve read several books about sex recently and this is the best so far. Maybe if you’re in your twenties or in your 30s and never been married it wouldn’t be as relevant but there’s still info here for everyone.
As a 54 yr old male, I have to admit that I read this with an extreme amount of trepidation as I have never read a sex manual at all before. Tracey Cox is funny and engaging but also not shy to tell you how things are when you're looking at a sex life beyond your 50th yr and onwards. Learnt a hell of a lot from this book, and therefore heartily recommend it to anyone over 50 on the slight proviso that it is aimed primarily at women rather than men but gives tips and advice aimed at both sexes.
Great sex starts at 50 is a book mainly aimed at women. It's packed with common sense advice and guidance presented in an approachable way. It's an interesting read and approached in a down to earth way with insights and stories from ladies in each chapter..
It's a book that can doesn't need to be read as some chapters may not apply to you,
I received this book from Netgalley in return for a honest review.
Whilst this book has great content, it really is primarily for women. There are some sections for men, but is as if there were an afterthought. I think the promo material should make this clear. I would not have bought this book had I known.
