A murder, a change of identity, a missing au pair, and a wad of cash to find the culprit.
University professor and part-time private investigator Perry Webster takes on a new assignment when he gets an offer he can’t refuse.
A previously unknown member of his wife’s family turns up out of the blue with a strange request to investigate a murder that occurred some fifty years ago.
His wife’s cousin’s father fled England after his own wife was murdered. He professed his innocence, but having handled the murder weapon, and having had an affair with the au pair, the odds were stacked against him proving his case.
With the promise of a payment of a million pounds if he can find the guilty party, Perry begins to dig around in the past. But despite the events having occurred many moons ago, his exploration will ruffle some feathers and rattle a few skeletons in the closet.
Can Perry crack a case involving wealthy people who have everything to lose? Or will his amateur sleuthing put him and his wife at serious risk?

An old crime creates new drama for private investigator Perry Webster. The philosophy professor turned private investigator uses his analytical skills to solve a decades-old murder – but someone would prefer it stayed forgotten. Stan Jackson’s evocative writing creates a detailed picture of York and its surrounding countryside, inhabited by memorable and relatable characters. A gripping and intelligent murder mystery that kept me guessing until the very end.
Having read all of Stan Jackson's books, I eagerly awaited this one and was not disappointed. In my opinion, the best yet. Perry Webster is an engaging character and I love the way he doggedly continues investigating when others would have given up. The plot, going back 50 years was intriguing and I found it impossible to guess the ending. Even when I thought it was over another little surprise was waiting on the last page!
University professor and part time P.I. Perry Webster has a new case. Can he prove that fifty years ago his wife, Julia's uncle did not kill his own wife. A case that involve wealthy people who if found guilty have everything to lose. An entertaining well-written crime story
This story does not have the sizzling pace of American whodunits but is cleverly narrated and God's the attention superbly. It is also packed with surprises
