What happens to Heroes and Villains once they “burn out”? They get older, lead different lives, loose touch with one another, until their power starts to come back. Now, it’s thirty some odd years later and a few of them that are now in their fifties, find they are in that situation. Matt “Hammer” Evans isn’t happy with his dilemma and it forces him to get back in touch with Professor Colton “Mythos“ Stephens. In fact, Matt never wanted to be a Chosen or a Villain and the past just makes it harder to see Colton again.
When Matt visits Colton for the first time in thirty years and Colton finds Matt’s power is returning, Colton get’s the idea that he can help. But Colton’s good intentions and his surrender to his kink, put him in the clutches of the evil and vile Leo “Blue Bolt”.
Thomas “Anvil” Davos was Matt’s old partner, better known as ”Hammer and Anvil”. Thomas shows Matt a video that Mythos has made and it sends Thomas and Matt on a rescue mission, before Colton really disappears. Along the way they come across Serpent Mound, fight some zombie snakes and meet Boris “Cat Boy”.
Now, there’s a whole lot more going on from there!
I have to admit, this is not what I routinely read but there’s a whole lot of weird, crazy, and fun going on in this novel. After I got the players all straightened out in my head, this became a real page-turner for me. Dani Hermit and Nevi Starr do a really good job at building this strange world with: Disk, Priests, Legacy Program, Chosen, gems, marks and more incredible ideas. They present an in-depth look into all their fantastic characters that reveal all kinds of emotions: guilt, jealousy, friendship, anger and they get into some fights too. There’s new things they learn about each other and it’s not without surprises and secrets. For those that are sensitive, just fair warning, the story is somewhat dark, there’s BDSM and kink that get’s everyone into trouble.
As fas as characters go, Matts level headed and just want’s a normal life. Colton is smart, nerdy and has a kink that leads to all kinds of trouble. Lucky for Colton, Matt knows how to keep him under control and calm. There are plenty of secondary characters that are interesting and I’m sure there will be more to come as this series continues. Two particular characters that stole the show: Thomas “Anvil” and Boris “Cat Boy” definitely get up to all kinds of high-jinks and the banter between them is hilarious.
The deeper I got into this story, my thought was, this would definitely be an interesting graphic comic or hero/villain movie, but it would definitely be X -rated. I highly recommend “Burn Out” for anyone who likes the uniqueness of heroes and villains. Dani Hermit and Nevi Star deliver an intriguing cliff-hanger at the end. As for me, I was throughly entertained with “Burn Out” and plan on following this series.
