“This story is dedicated to a little porcelain doll that lives in your attic that was left there by a previous owner. You don’t know it but it knows you, because at night it quietly steals through the walls into your bedroom and watches you while you sleep.”

Well that certainly sets the vibe of the story…. Oh and the little kid talking about his grandmother crawling on the ceiling 😱💀

The story is set in past times, and a blizzard is blowing in, trapping the family in their little house with a demon. I loved the resolution and felt so many things while reading this short story ❤️

Great Opening Sentence

“Momma always told me not to leave bed before dawn but I did, and that was when I saw Granma crawling on the ceiling.”

“Granma” by Howard Gardos gets 4 out of 5 stars!

Well with an opening sentence like that, I couldn’t stop there and devoured this novella. I definitely got the creepy, dirty granma vibe (think the grandma from M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Visit”) considering she slithers and crawls around at night after bedtime. As I read, I can envision her nightmarish movements and the fear the main character, Gertrude, feels with all her senses. The author set the timeframe for early-1900s America where it was rural farmlands and tough winters in Iowa. One frigid storm isolates the family. Granma gets Gertrude’s help to save them as a help was hidden in family stories.

This short story is fast-paced and bites you right away (pun intended). Respect for family and folklore are woven into the plot. You’ll want to know what happens next to Gertrude and her family as fragile granma sits in her chair until night falls.

It took me a few pages to get accustomed to the point of view of this story, then I was hooked. A fun quick read with a steady build up.

Fun little story, but I'd actually rate it a 3 ½ if they let me.
