In spite of the fact that Jesus talked often about Hell, it rarely comes up in current Christian sermons and conversations. In fact, it seems that unbelievers are the only ones who talk about Hell ... when they use it as a curse word. In this fictional story, the author seeks to unpack a biblical view of what Hell is like. With 34 letters sent back and forth from a man on earth and another man in Hell, the author uses the letters from the man in Hell to describe, in very specific ways, what it's like there. A secondary objective of this book is to expose and attack sinful, nominal Christianity. Someone who claims to be a Christian, and yet is not taking his pursuit of holiness seriously, will either be offended or will experience godly conviction and make the necessary adjustments in his life.
Matt does a fantastic job describing what the Bible says Hell is like. It s a real place reserved for those who have chosen to reject God. In this allegory, there is letter correspondence between Christian (Chris) and Nobody, the man currently in Hell. Chris has seventeen questions and just as many letters. The man in Hell can't help but know the Scriptures and manipulate them to confuse Chris as he contemplates his faith in Jesus.
One of my favorite lines comes from the man in Hell, and it is repeated throughout the book, "Eternity is where we finally get what we always wanted on earth." This book will make you ask yourself the tough questions of whether or not you believe that the Word of God is true, and if you do believe it is true, why don't you read His Words?
I’m so thankful to Pastor Matt Ellis for this extremely eye opening book. It’s very raw and unnerving at points but I believe that’s what it takes in our passive attitudes (well at least mine, at times. It brings up things that I’ve never thought about and wish I had. But thanks to him writing this book, I now understand so much more. I would highly recommend this book to everyone.
Pastor Matt has found a very compelling way to assess your standing with Jesus. All believers and non believers should read this book. Most people have a very dim understanding of what hell is like or what it takes to get there, this book really makes you think.
