Okay this book is Woah!! It had many twists and turns which I never saw coming and enjoyed a lot. This book is just simply…amazing!!! It had the perfect balance of romance and supernaturalness. And Ruby was just awesome. I loved her a lot. She's definitely in my Top 3 Badass female characters list.
This series left me feeling many different ways. To say I read them would be an understatement. I devoured them. This is one of the more interesting tellings of the four horsemen that I've read, and I did thoroughly enjoy it. Bandit and the Banshee helped... a lot.
Initially, I hated the way 4 several thousand year old demons acted like children. It was hard to get behind them. But much like they did with Ruby, they grew on me.
However, Ruby is probably one of the best FMCs I've read to date. Most FMCs are either whiny, intolerable, absurdly strong for no reason, a complete and utter moron, or worse, all of the above. Ruby had her moments of this, but I'd expect nothing less of a 23 year old half-succubus. The moments that stood out though, fuck did they stand OUT. She asked questions when she didn't know something, she didn't just fly blind (mostly) without considering the consequences or options, and she was patient in way I could only dream to be.
The first book was world building. The second was character building. The third was plot thickening. But the fourth? The fourth was nothing but spectacular.
I listened to the audio for these books, but I wanted to list them as the Omnibus and there wasn't an audio version for those, so here we are.
Anyway -
Overall, I did enjoy this series. The first was the weakest, but it grew on me. The characters grew on me and I was able to forgive some of the foibles of the storytelling - but that didn't stop me from often rolling my eyes or questioning why certain things were happening. Certain decisions, certain actions, so on.
And there was definitely some issues with the narrative repeating itself, or jumping a bit where something happens, and then the next chapter either sort of treads the same ground we literally just tread, or else jumps forward in a way which made me felt like I was missing something.
But, as I said, the characters did grow on me. Especially Bandit. Bandit's awesome. Moira definitely had her moments. And the Horsemen, as people, mostly... except they were actually terrible at their jobs. More on that later. But Ruby... girl, you're a hot mess. LOL
Anyway -
To break it down a little.
The first two books could've been one book. Honestly, in the first book we meet the characters, and they're pretty one-dimensional, and then things happen, but not, like, things that could've taken a whole book or really moved the actual, Hell plot along. Not really.
And the the second book developed the characters a little bit more, but just a little, and more stuff happens that's more, like, character setup and not really moving the Hell plot.
And some of this filler could've definitely been cut and these two books combined. Honestly, if I'd just read the first book when it came out and didn't listen to them back to back, it might've been one of those situations where I completely forgot about it before the second book came out.
Also - please, for the love of all things holy and unholy, find a way to develop your characters and give them "strength" without having to resort to
Also, I didn't love the whole, "If you're a person who needs trigger warnings, then this isn't for you" kinda thing. It's a bit dismissive of a real issue.
There was enough going on in this story with her being Lucifer's Daughter and having to learn how to be the ruler of Hell and dealing with demons and shit without the main thrust of the first two books because about her being SA'd by her shithead of a boyfriend.
And I don't love the whole thing.
So, yeah... first two books had issues.
The third book is where this really starts become a book about the Queen of the Damned. Ruby finally
My favorite part - or at least part I remember the most - from the third book is Moira giving Ruby a needed talking to.
Ruby was so vacillating and so all over the place with her feelings, mostly because she didn't know how the guys were feeling, and Moira was finally like, "Look, bitch... stop moping and fucking ask them!" and I'm like YES! FINALLY! PEOPLE TALKING TO EACH OTHER INSTEAD OF HAVING POINTLESS ANGST!
And then the last book shit really goes down. Again, more fucking , but all the Hell stuff was finally getting good.
Except...
Ok, so Ruby gets herself in trouble time and again because she doesn't listen to people. Or, when she does, it's people who she shouldn't listen to. People who literally tell her, "You shouldn't trust me".
But, also, she's kinda dumb and slow on the uptake. Like, the lilies. They're all dumb, really. Like,
Also... where was Bandit during that whole interlude?
Like,
***
So, last thing...
The Horse Men.
Guys, I love you. Dark, smoldering, sexy and brooding? Yes, thanks.
And, like, I did enjoy the spicy parts of the book, and I liked the guys.
But 1) they needed to be a bit more discernable from each other, 2) the possessiveness was too much and 3) you guys are really bad at your job.
A little spoilery here, but I don't want to tag the whole thing, so be warned.
The Horse Men are literally created to be Guardians for the Heir, and to help Ruby contain the Beast. (I didn't even get into the whole Beast thing and how that was kinda weird, and why did it have to be a separate personality, like why, even, but ok.)
Anyway -
So, in the first book alone, Ruby is
This pattern continues throughout the story.
And, like, not a single time are the Horse Men actually successful at stopping, like, anything? Ruby gets hurt. Moira gets hurt. THEY get hurt. They literally never successfully protect anyone against anything at any literal point?! (Ok, maybe once. I can't actually remember, but I just remember being like, guys. You're pretty and apparently amazing at sex... but can you do your actual jobs ever?
At the end,
***
So, yeah...
So many issues. So many.
But, still, I wasn't expecting an opus going into this story. The narration was good - though I could never decide what accent Moira was supposed to have. It sounded vaguely Irish, but gets referred to as Southern at one point?
But... yeah.
Let's just say there's a reason this is going on my "guilty pleasures" shelf, because it's so problematic, and not just in the triggery kind of ways, but in the writing, plot, and character development kind of ways, too...
But it was fun, and would make for a hell of a movie series.
Loving Ruby and her pet raccoon, Bandit and sidekick Moira. The horsemen are yummy, and watching the characters evolve! There are touching moments, action packed moments, funny moments, spicy moments and moments your heart is in your throat at what is going on What an exciting series.
Loved this series. This is the first series I've read that had the horseman. It was so captivating. I couldn't put it down. I'm just going to say it, Bandit the trash panda is my devil damned favorite, and that final chapter from his perspective was frickin everything. I really loved how the author went far enough to give us the entire backstory of Lilith, Eve, Lucifer, and the 7 sins. I was crying when the sins came forth and Ruby finally got to see who they were and how involved they had been in her life. The only thing that made me sad was that her and the Beast weren't reconnected by the ending. I wish they would have been. You could feel how much they both were suffering when the beast crowned her.
Listened to these audiobooks since they were free on Audible Plus. The first book reads very much like an introduction to the series, an appetizer to capture your interest. The men felt very.. one-dimensional and didn't really seem to have any individual qualities to them other than "hot guy" so I hoped we would get to know them better in the future books. One thing this series excels at is good pacing, however, where it's really lacking is in the protagonist. Ruby doesn't seem to have much of a personality going for her, aside from going into a murderous rage when someone harms her bestie and pet raccoon. Which is understandable, same girl. However, she spends the majority of this series being pushed around by everyone around her, the love interests, the other characters, Ruby doesn't seem to have anything resembling a free will, and just gets pushed into whatever direction the plots needs her to without any internal drive of her own. This also makes the smut/spicy scenes of the book rather icky to read because they contain some cases of dubious/lack of consent. Consensual sex scenes are very important to me. So yeah, I really did not enjoy the third book, in which the lack of consent is the most bothersome. If lack of consent is a game-breaker for you, maybe give this series a pass. I wish I could love it, because the overarching plot with lore and magic system is actually interesting, but it's just overshadowed by a protagonist without a spine and the personality of bland cardboard, and a lack of consent that gave me the ick. I did not like the love interests either so the only two characters I liked were the best friend and the pet raccoon, which does not bode well for this series.
All 4 books I loved!!! The plot, the angst, the twists and turns and most of all, the spice. Ugh. I need another.
Our badass FMC, Ruby Morningstar’s life was turned upside down when the Four Horsemen showed up claiming she’s the daughter of Lucifer. Of course, off the bat I knew it wasn’t going to be easy to get Ruby to comply because when we meet her we learn that she’s a BA!!
Spoilers ⬇️:
I love that throughout book 1 and 2, we learn about Ruby her morals and ethics (at least when it comes down to it LOL) and that growing up in the human world made her more human compared to the devil side of her. I already fell for Rysten, he was so sweet and really tried to understand Ruby and her perspective.
I’m not saying the other 3 didn’t try, but it was apparent that Rysten did the most. And then we have Laran who respected Ruby as a person with her own mind. Allistair was up there too until he pushed her off the cliff — I was laughing. Or was that Laran? Ugh, I wish I highlighted in my books but I didn’t cause I got the SE and wanted to keep it pretty 😭. Last, but certainly not least, Julian AKA Death, is such a pessimist given he is Death. But when it came to Ruby he held himself back from her until the moment came when he literally forced a bond between the two of them (for a valid reason ofc) Ruby was pissed but, that didn’t mean the makeup sex wasn’t good 😉
ANYWAYS, I really enjoyed this book. It was such a fun read where I was attached to basically almost all the characters and it had me crying not once, but twice!! This is definitely a series that will stick with me like ACOTAR is still stuck with me.
Overall I loved this whole story! 🥹🫶 Ruby & the Horsemen were great, I loved each of their different personalities though they were alike in some ways, you still could define their differences. I also loved the best friend & trash panda 🦝! It's always awesome when there's a 🦝 involved. 😆 They are both a funny delight & great ice breakers when the tension gets to be too much. Overall the pace in the plot is pretty fast, there's a lot of info thrown at you at times & just as many questions. So if you aren't paying attention you may miss it. There's plenty of twists & turns & wtf just happened moments. 🤣 There's also really tough to get through moments & heartbreaking ones. The spice & romance is much slower paced & minimal unfortunately but what is there is good! 🫠 I'm okay with the conclusion of everything mostly but I do wish there was more, more on the Horsemen & more between them & Ruby, a better glimpse into where they went & how they are afterwards. We did get a nice little epilogue that sort of gave a glimpse but was focused on Moira & Bandit only briefly mentioning Ruby & her men, it was a nice funny little tidbit in the future but again I do wish there had been more. And ofc since I did this special edition set I got to listen to the Day in the life of Bandit which was a nice funny little delight. 😆 I love the little critter & how he picks & chooses who to terrorize & who not to, tho I do feel bad for Rysten. 😆 Anyways overall I loved the series & I devoured it rather quickly. lol I wish & would love for the author to eventually maybe come back around to them & give us more though doubtful a girl can hope. 🖤
Book: Lucifer’s Daughter, Wicked Games, Infernal Games, & Brimstone Nightmare Series: Queen of the Damned Series Author: Kel Carpenter Will You Read More From This Author: Yes Completed Series: Yes!
If you want a book where you have a strong FMC, who is also emotionally intelligent but has a wicked temper when the people she cares about get hurt. This is the book for you. I love how Kel developed her characters over time. The growth you see throughout the books is beautiful and well thought out. The ties you see between all the characters are so fun at the end. There are fun Easter eggs too!
Oh, who did I not like is the better question! Bandit is amazing! He’s a raccoon sidekick! TRASH PANDA!!!!!!! Do I need to say more? Laran is a gentle giant who is completely open and honest with all his emotions. Moira is a spunky best friend who is deeply loyal. Anyone would be lucky to call her a best friend.
Okay, so there are lots of different personalities, lots of foreplay, and lots of different styles. D/S, Spanking, some B, and other kinds of spice. It’s still not too outrageous (at least for me) and it didn’t go into too much detail. It was 2 thumbs up here!
Triggers: YES. There are quite a few triggers. The main ones that were hard for me were attempted rape with a date rape drug, and actual rape (not in detail). There was also some other serious content. Please read the warnings before reading this book. I was okay, but you may not be.
I usually do not reach for reverse harem/harem stories but I'm actually really glad I read this series. There's so many amazing characters and the different dynamics between them is great. Ruby is a badass, her best friend Moira is such a fierce and protective friend, Bandit the racoon is hilarious, and let's not forget the Four Horsemen. Each of them is unique and in that their relationships with Ruby are so different from each other. There were a lot of little moments she shared with each of them separately and sometimes together that were either very sweet and thoughtful or really hot. Of course there was a ton of conflict as well. The fact that there all demons and all have different abilities, including Ruby who is half succubus, makes it a little easier to swallow for me with the nature of their relationships. I enjoyed reading about the different demons and their abilities, the seelie, the provinces of hell. It was so easy to stay intrigued with this series throughout it. I read the complete collection on Kindle Unlimited so I was able to just keep flipping the pages from book to book. It all blended very well and I was happy to be able to start and finish the series so easily.
What a ride this series was! It was brutal, shocking and addictive.
Yes it was reverse harem, and why yes, there was delicious and brooding men, HOWEVER there was SO much more to this tale than just the smut!
The world building and elements of the story were just outstanding. Ruby was full of sass, a badass demon and her character development and growth was amazing. Moira, her best friend, was the definition of girl power and loyalty throughout.
I loved the addition of the familiars and the different types of familiars, the beast and the Sins in the last book where everything wrapped up together!
The first book drew me in and I was intrigued by the storyline throughout, with the fourth book just blowing this series out of the park for me. Certainly gonna be checking out Kel’s other books!
On the whole, this was a pretty good story (read the whole series in one big binge reading session) that had quite the twisty journey for Ruby, Moira and Bandit. The Four Horsemen just annoyed me for a good chunk of the story, typical alpha male tropes, which of course means they had a problem with consent, and abusing their position of power and authority.
Only thread that didn’t get resolved to my satisfaction was the tattooed lady - you’ll know the one - and it was a great side story at the beginning, but fizzled around the end of book two?... I think it was two.
Thoroughly enjoyed the action of the last two books, and thought the twists regarding the Sins was well done. Not a perfect book by any means, but the feisty characters made up for a lot.
Ruby’s story was hard at times to read because it left you sad and angry, vengeful for her and even happy for her. It was definitely a whirlwind of emotions. She sacrificed so much and to me granted little. I hoped at the end she would be able to find a way to make herself whole again and all her men as well. I can only hope maybe a one off special or something where Ruby and her men find a little happiness maybe with a bundle of joy of their own (hint hint). Anyway awesome story, loved the fight scenes and the smexy scenes. Especially their game of tag when she was in transition. So sad for her story to be done, but I would definitely reread this story many times to come!!!
It felt so good to read through it all. the first book felt like everything happened oh so quickly. But the characters slowly unraveled themselves.
None of the relationships are fast to happen. They progress throughout the story as they chip at each character.
These characters are flawed. And you love them for it. Their possessiveness, their pride, their secrets.
Oh the secrets that are revealed in the final book. This series is like a present thats wrapped within many boxes. You open the first one and see this other box, but instead of getting smaller the story grows larger and larger.
Your heart jumps of excitement and breaks with loss and soars with love.
Bandit, Ruby, Moira, Alistair, Julian, Rystin, and Laran took me for a crazy ride. I loved them. The differences in them, the strength they all possessed. The loyalty and love they all had for eachother.
This omnibus has all 4 books within it and I loved it. Ruby sacrificed a lot to get to where she did. Moira was there to help her every step of the way and don't get me started on her mates. All I can say is yum. They were everything. These books were so spicy, Mmmm.
The author put different characters points of view and this is something that can go terribly wrong or amazingly right and this author nailed it. I enjoyed hearing from all of the mains pov. Especially Bandits, Ruby's Pet raccoon.
This book made me laugh, cry, blush, and smile. I highly recommend reading it!!!!
Such an outstanding series I read in a binge manner. I could not put it down without working on a way to next pick it back up in the shortest possible time frame. However I was a little bit disappointed with certain happenings that I can't mention for the sake of any potential spoiler alerts. Suffice it to say then, that I have scored this final book a little down, but after 3 5-Star ratings and a final 4-Star, it still equates to 19 Stars out of a possible maximum of 20, which after all is said and done it does round up to 4 x 5. A must read for solving all the puzzles the series created. I do like coming away from a book/series without having leftovers you couldn't get resolved.
Man am I a sucker for the paranormal four horsemen trope. I've read several now from contemporary to paranormal and it never gets old. This series however, holds a special place in my heart because it features a pretty kickass FMC tattoo artist with a unveiled hidden identity, her funny pet raccoon, four very hot and very handsome protectors, an awesome ride-or-die best friend, and it’s set in my home city. The smut in this had me blushing, the plot to smut ratio is fairly even, and it furthers the story nicely. It’s also an easy read, the plot moves along at a good pace. I recommend adding this to your TBR if you like a fast paced, jump right in, hot why-choose romance and sexually liberated characters.
This was such a fun paranormal romance omnibus to read. I mean we got a badass FMC, 4 sexy powerful Horsemen, a raccoon side kick, & an equally badass Banshee best friend. This series is comprised of four books: Lucifer's Daughter, Wicked Games, Infernal Desires, and Brimstone Nightmares. Brimstone Nightmares was definitely my favorite. The first two books moved a little slowly for me, but they're quick reads that are really tasked with handling the world building. Things start to pick up in book three and Ruby starts to really come to terms with who she was born to be. Book four is really where all the characters are in the thick of the action. The Horsemen are absolutely delicious (Julian is ny fave). This series will make you laugh, cry, and everything in between.
“You’re everything I didn’t know I wanted.” - Rysten
"I hoped that with coffee I could disagree with her, but there were some things that even caffeine couldn’t change. The Horsemen’s bond with me was one of them." - Ruby
In a void where sound is violent, a whisper became a shout. - Ruby
"If I was a different kind of demon, I would kill them all and be done with it. That was what my dark entity wanted after all. But I wasn’t a different kind of demon. I was Ruby Morningstar." - Ruby
Oh my... What a tale! This box set was enthralling, intriguing, and captivating! I couldn't put it down!
Phew, what a series! I downloaded this complete series in one very long read! There is so much that happens, there is barely ever a lull in the action. I adored Ruby, her Horsemen, Moira, and Bandit. I would absolutely agree with the mid-burn label on this book. It’s not hot and heavy straight out of the gate, but there is ample amounts of steam later on.
There were still some questions I have, and some things got left open ended, but that’s ok. All in all I really enjoyed this story.
I really enjoyed this series! It was a massive roller coaster of emotions! Ups and downs, twists and turns, there was a little bit of everything in these books! I absolutely LOVED Bandit and Moira, they stole the show! The interactions between Ruby and the Horsemen were sometimes tough and sometimes so sweet. The ending felt a little flat, I kinda expected to get more of an epilogue, but that doesn’t change the fact that these were all wonderful books and I’m so glad I finally read this series!!
Absolutely amazaballs series, RH with demons and a racoon familiar
This series is full of mystery, action, hot times and magic. I love the growth of the FMC, her best friend and her familiar racoon. The guys are surprised by how different she is and how nothing happens as they had planned. This series was so hard to put down as I just couldn't wait to see what happened next. Definitely a must read.
I really enjoyed this book! It had a great pace that sucked you in and kept right on moving, until the end. I enjoyed the quirky characters and thought the story line was unique with plenty of twists and turns! Ruby is loyal to those she loves, including her pet raccoon, Bandit. The four Horsemen were all delicious in their own way, and they all love some Ruby. It was a slow burn but a fun ride there.
Oh I absolutely LOVE Ruby!!! Really, I loved all the characters in the series! And the story was just as good!! First lesson, don't p*** off a tattoo artist!! Bahaha!! That was probably my favorite scene in this series. And Bandit!! Has there ever been a better freaking familiar!!!??? Moira, oh she was so snarky & awesome. The Beast, oh, brutally amazing!! The Horsemen, yes please!!! Highly recommend!!!
This book is everything I love and more. I couldn’t stop reading it, staying up all hours into the night sacrificing precious sleep because I couldn’t stop reading, constantly wondering what was coming next for Ruby and all she loved and held dear. I was so sad to reach the end and silently hope that maybe another book may come out bringing back these characters I loved so much.
Although the story arc overall has the potential to be very good, if felt a little rushed and over edited. There were a lot of characters but the 4 male leads needed a tiny bit more development - it was slightly hard to keep tabs on which was which at the beginning.
Although this a RH, there’s not much “action”. Just enough in the first two books, but none in the last book.
TLDR: great story, told too hastily, needed a little more juice
Like all good book series these books have their shares of ups and down. You will laugh and you will cry or at least I did but the storyline is compelling and you will feel the need to read on.I’d definitely recommend if you like RH books as each of the characters have their own personality and there never is a point where the characters blend into one another as is so often seen in RH books. Therefore in my opinion it is definitely worth the read.
Read the omnibus so it was easier to read this four book series. Ruby (FMC) really grows in this series from starting off thinking she’s half demon with a raccoon and her best friend to living happily ever after with her mates, best friend and raccoon. We don’t meet our true villain until the end of book three/four but that’s not to say that we don’t see action in each book.
Fun part is the epilogue in the audio of the omnibus has bonus scenes about Bandit (raccoon)!
This series went far in taking this reader away from the real world issues. Definitely immersive with engaging characters and not too heavy on gratuitous scenes. Just enough to keep the story going. Of course the heroine is frustratingly likable. And her sidekick definitely deserves at least a book of her own. Honestly? The whole premise and the way it’s written is well worth the time. Especially if you’re looking for some escapism.
