Ten seconds may be all she has left ...

Kate Edison witnesses her father’s death and, in order to keep his memory alive, decides to follow in his footsteps by joining the CIA. She molds herself into becoming exactly what the CIA is looking for---and captures their interest, both personally and professionally. But before she can finish the CIA process, Kate is offered a position as an espionage agent in another highly secretive government agency, which she accepts.

While completing her agency training, Kate is catapulted into a shadowy world where wealth and power are the ultimate goal, and those in charge will stop at nothing to get it. While on the job, Kate uncovers secrets that, if revealed, would cost her life, but if kept, could bring down a nation. Isolated and unsure of who to trust, she brings in a fellow agent, but pulling him into the web of conspiracy and lies puts a target on both their backs - and it will take every skill they’ve ever learned as agents to stay alive long enough to stop the enemy no one else can see.

Holy. Crow! I’m going to preface this by saying I have never read a thriller before and had no clue what to expect. This book was definitely outside my comfort zone. But one of my goals this year is to branch out and find new authors.

Kate had watched her father die at the age of sixteen. From that moment on, she knew she was destined to follow in his footsteps and join the CIA.

Several years later she finds herself interviewing with the CIA. Once the week-long interview process was complete, she receives a letter to join a secret branch of the government that no one knows about.

It wasn’t long before she noticed that things were not adding up. But there wasn’t anyone inside the organization that she could turn to. She does the unthinkable and reaches out to the one and only person on the outside that she knew she could trust.

Together they make plans to uncover all the secrets that the organization had been keeping. They both knew it would be dangerous and, if discovered, Kate could lose her life. But that was a small price to pay if her death could save thousands of lives.

I’m not going to lie, I had an extremely hard time getting into this book. I liked the very beginning of the book, but when Kate went to the training facility, I kind of lost interest. There’s a lot of information in the first half that I didn’t feel was necessary. I was a little over halfway when the book started picking back up and had me at the edge of my seat. There were so many twists and turns that I did not see coming at all. My advice would be to not try to figure anything out. Just go with it.

The romance in this book is very minimal, which is why it’s out of my comfort zone. I’m not used to reading books where the romance is put way on the back burner. I did want a little more of it so it could combat the intensity of this book.

I did enjoy this book and I’m curious enough to read the next book in this series. But now I have my eyes open and know what to expect. I’m looking forward to reading more books by Ms. Clayton.

And of course we can't forget my casting. Not going to lie.. this one was kinda hard. Haha. What do you think?

Wow, just wow!! This is a great debut from a new author. I really like suspense/thriller/mysteries so when I saw the FB post asking for readers to read an ARC I said yes, and I'm so glad I did. I found this story enthralling. It captivated my attention completely and I didn't want to stop reading. There are a few places in the storyline that allowed me to rest and relax my brain for a bit, then it was back to the action again!

I don't want to give anything away that isn't in the book description/blurb, but I really liked Kate--she's a phenomenal agent in training, and while reading I was reminded of the spy show that used to be on the USA channel--Covert Affairs. The male agent Kate brings in to help her (I'm not going to say his name because you may think it's someone else like I did) is swoony and they work really well together.

I thought the characters, especially Kate, were well thought. We know why Kate does what she does and the author doesn't diviate from that. The storyline has a lot of action and took a couple of twists I didn't see coming. As I was getting close to the end I thought this would make a good series, and the author made my day when I found a chapter for the sequel at the end of the book. Yay!!

I received a complimentary copy to read. My review is freely given and all thoughts expressed are my own.

Fast Paced and Interesting

I loved the fast paced, all in, nature of this book. It was interesting and occupied my whole mind while I read it (and even some while I wasn't reading!). This isn't a light, fluffy read, a lot of times it felt gritty and violent. The romance is on the light side with the plot definitely being the driving force. There are a lot of players in this game but I never felt overwhelmed by them. Well, sometimes I was overwhelmed by them individually being evil, fearful or crazy smart but it was easy to stay invested in The story and its characters. The author did a great job of giving me the feeling of things not being right or building up the intensity in situations that had my heart racing and my eyes speed reading.

There was one thing that really bugged me and it was the repeated phrase of the character rolling her lips between her teeth. It's an odd thing to say and it was used so many times I was rolling my eyes. Other than that, I enjoyed this story and I am really looking forward to the next book!

Content: violence ( some graphic in nature), torture, peril, kissing

This is the first book in the Ten Seconds series by L.A. Clayton.

Wow. Just wow. This is like watching an entire series of Alias all in one go! Just a wonderful read. I am excited to see what more this debut author has to offer. She already has put the finishing touches on book two of this series. I got a sneak peek at the end of this book and am ready to dive into TEN SECONDS TO PANDEMIC right now. How fitting that it really resonates with the pandemic we are currently facing. Maybe Clayton has a bit of a prophetess in her.

Basic premise: Kate has wanted to be a part of the CIA since she was 16 and her father, who was also in the CIA, died unexpectedly. She goes through the rigors of testing and comes out on top only to have the choice taken away from her. She is forced into an ultra covert agency that initially looks on the up and up and eventually she realizes what she has really gotten herself into.

The action in this is kick butt awesome and I was glued to the page the entire time. It was an unputdownable read for sure! I particularly liked the addition of Officer Lyons, the man who brought her in for the original CIA testing. He was majorly miffed when it seemed she dropped out from the running the minute she crossed the threshold to be invited to be a part of the CIA. Having him in the story really grounded it for me and made look forward to every time he had an appearance.

I wanted this book to last longer than it did even though it is nearing 400 pages. I just couldn’t get enough of this story! So excited to find a great author who just gets me and gives me the types of stories I like.

If you enjoy a good romantic suspense thriller, definitely give this one a try, you won’t be disappointed! This is more suspense & thriller than romance but there is a nice romance element to this book.

I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.

I don’t typically read the synopsis or blurb of a book because it gives too much away for me. So with TEN SECONDS TO DEAD I went in pretty blind - all I knew was CIA and debut author.
Well, I wasn’t disappointed. The story line was believable - terrifyingly so - and the characters honest and real. The world of the AGI was hauntingly realistic and it scares me to no end; I don’t doubt something akin to this exists somewhere. Kate is the kind of girl I want to be when I grow up.
I absolutely loved TEN SECONDS TO DEAD and will be preordering it and anything else by this author. I will read this again and again, as I do all my favorite books.
It is the day after I finished reading the book, and I can’t stop thinking about it. I know the story isn’t done, but I really don’t want to have to wait too long for the second book (I know I have a long time to wait!!!). I guess I’ll just have to read it again.

Ten Seconds to Dead--PG13
Violence: Yes, quite a bit, about as much as a Bourne movie
Language: There was no offensive language that I can remember
Sex: No sex. Some kissing.
I thought I would never get to sleep after reading this book because of how amped up I got reading it! I'm normally a rom-com gal and stick overwhelmingly with romance (I didn't even have a bookshelf tag for this book), but I took a chance on this first-time author (which I cannot believe this is her first book!) and I'm hooked! She MUST write more! I mean, using romance jargon, I got my HFN (happy for now), but there are so many unanswered questions. Plus, this heroine is KICK A$$! I read the book, told my husband about it, and we read it together. When we weren't reading it, we were talking about it. It's EXCELLENT.

10 seconds to Dead
This book was all kinds of intense and action packed. I loved it! There are a few parts that are a little slower but it is still an edge of your seat page turner. PLUS Kate is awesome! I loved her and her desire to learn and help people. Her story is such a great one and the friends she made all have great personalities that just add to the story. I really hope that we get to see some more of her AGI friends in the next book! On that note, AGI is all sorts of messed up haha the reality that something like that probably exists makes this book even more intense. For a first time Author she did an amazing job! I can’t wait to see her writing develop and grow and she writes more!

I received an advanced copy of this book for an honest review and I can honestly tell you that I LOVED this book! I typically do not read thrillers, but this book grabbed my attention from the very first page and had my heart beating throughout the book. The characters and plot are well developed throughout the story. There are twists and turns that keep you guessing and just enough romance to make you smile. I was really glad to know that there is a sequel to this book coming in a few months because I cannot wait to read what Kate and Jake are up to next! I hope this is the first of many books from this author because I am definitely a fan!

"Too much detail"

I was almost a third into this one before I realised there was going to be a story line. The detailed explanation of every stage of Kate getting into the CIA wore me out. How often did she ogle an instructor or a fellow agent? How many times did she roll her lips between her teeth? Was any of that appropriate for a potential agent? When the story line finally emerged it was another laughable shadow government outfit ready to establish a new order. What followed was predictable. Plenty of violent action and our heroine survives against all odds. Exciting stuff? Not really. I was too worn out by the recruitment programme.

Kind of like Alias. Kate is recruited because she has a true photographic memory. She thinks she is joining the CIA but ends up with something called AGI which is an alternative government in case something happened to the real one. Once she gets in she finds out that everything is not as she’s been told. Sound familiar? The reason behind the title - some agents have been unknowingly implanted with something that can kill them. The reason I didn’t rate it higher, because there are too many cliches and certain phrases that keep getting repeated. The rescues are a little too convenient, too.

I was given the chance to read an ARC of this book. Before I began just reading the plot I was already intrigued. I thought I had the main character pinned down, but was surprised when she accepted the secret mission position. This book was the equivalent of watching an action packed movie. It draws you into her world. And once you think you have it figured out, well you are probably wrong! Highly recommend!!!

I was immediately intrigued by the blurb and knew this had to be moved up my TBR list. Clayton did a fabulous job telling Kate's story because I felt like I was with her every decision she had to make. Pacing was spot on and I really loved these characters and their start to finish journey. Lyon was most definetley swoon worthy and Kate had me rooting her on from the start. I am so looking forward to book 2. 5 stars!

Kate Edison is a lot like her father. Gifted with true photographic memory and knowing her father was employed by the CIA, she has only ever dreamed of following in his footsteps. Witnessing his death was a kick to the gut but solidified her decision to become the perfect agent. She’s done nothing but prepare herself for her inevitable future with the CIA. She attacks her training with gusto and breezes through much of it with top grades. But before completing the training, she is approached and recruited into a secretive government agency that no one even knows exists. Supposedly her father was actually one of their agents and with the way they severed any other chance at employment, she grudgingly accepts the offer. Swept up in their intense training program but inspired by the tech and espionage that surrounds her, she quickly throws herself right back into being the best. But she’s no idiot and it doesn’t take her long to begin to pick up on indicators that belie the integrity of the AGI. She can trust no one within the agency, but a chance meeting puts her back in contact with an ally from the CIA. Risking her life, she becomes a double agent, aiming to take out the AGI and all of its nefarious activities. Still on her own, but with support at her back, she endeavors to ferret out all of the information she can so that she can both take the AGI out and avenge her father’s death. If she makes it out alive, which is highly unlikely, she may be able to pull her life back together as an agent of the CIA and with a possible new love interest.

Let me first begin this review by stating that this is not typically my chosen genre. I have read several romantic suspense books, but never anything with even a hint of political thriller or espionage. However, I recently participated in a blitz for this book on my blog and was given a copy, so I figured I might as well check it out. Just to be clear, I am an avid fan of smutty romance, so this review will be something entirely different for me. That said, I will say that the romantic hussy in me was mollified by the slight bit of romance contained within this book. I listed it as part of the genre, and it is extremely slight but present none-the-less. And hallelujah, it went exactly as I wanted it to as far the romantic interest. I was worried for a bit, but Ms. Clayton did me a solid and brought it back around. Thank you for that.

It’s funny. As I was reading this book, I kept chanting to myself “oh what a tangled web we weave” because it was so appropriate. And not long after, the book actually mentions the phrase. I did suspect that something suspicious was going on when Kate’s father had died and I do not know how, but I was thinking something along the lines of what ends up being revealed. This is actually the opening prologue, so I am curious if others pick up on the tiny tidbits as well. Although I was super annoyed with every evil act being carried out, I was glad that I had been able to pick up on clues throughout the story, having zero idea what to expect within a book of this type. Now that I have completed the book, I am thrilled that I made the decision to read it. I have absolutely nothing to compare this book to since it is my first foray into an unfamiliar genre, but I can tell you with certainty that I will not shy away from such reads any longer. In several instances my heart was racing as I was reading. It was almost like a train-wreck. You know you are going to read things that upset and anger you, but you have no capability to look away or cease reading without ending the quest for truth. Kate is a badass! That’s all I can say about her. One tough chick, she isn’t afraid to do what is necessary and is always fighting for the good – well, until she realizes she isn’t, but quickly formulates a plan to correct that horrific detail. Some of the content is a bit rough. The awful scenes Kate is witness to and the torture endured at times had me a bit green on the gills. Fair warning. This is by no means a plot filled with sunshine and rainbows. The corruption runs deep – generations deep, in fact. And the road to redemption will be a bloody battle.

There are several other characters brought into this story whom I believe will make a return, I am just unsure in what capacity. Several were left behind at the AGI and didn’t have the slightest inkling what was happening. Others may have known, but didn’t leave, or couldn’t leave. Many of them I enjoyed and would enjoy encountering again. What I do know is that the story does not stop here. It would be a mistake for Ms. Clayton to attempt to wrap this plot up with a bow. Thankfully, she chose not to. Also, I much appreciated not ending the book in a cliffhanger. I despise them! The place in which this particular segment ends is fitting. Thoughtfully added was an introduction to the next book in the series and I found myself quite eager to dive in. Alas, the book is not yet scheduled for release, so wait I shall. I do wonder what the series title is called though. I can’t say that I ever once came across it … A perplexing and elusive question at this point. In any case, I feel that TEN SECONDS TO DEAD was an excellent choice in which to cut my teeth within a new genre. If you get worked up with espionage, injustices, and dishonesty, then maybe this won’t be a good fit. But if you get worked up in a good way, enjoy being on the edge of your seat, and refuse to put a book down because you absolutely must know what will transpire next, then this is likely going to be a good choice to read. At the worst, you discover you simply do not care for thrillers, and the best you uncover a hidden genre you would have otherwise never even given a second thought to. I fall in the later category and will definitely be revisting with Kate Edison when next she returns.

AWESOME, AMAZING, CAPTIVATING, INTRIGUING, BRILLIANT AUTHOR.
Oh My Gawd this book is amazing. I was hooked after only reading the first page and a half. This story had me intrigued from the start, not once did I ever get lost in following the storyline or confused on what was taking place at all. The authors amazing writing made me believe that I knew all the characters intimately and that I was in the story with them. The story was close to what I believe is true in real life to make me believe that the organisation she was writing about really exists. It was a massive struggle for me to put the book down to go to bed at night. I think that L.A. Clayton has a massive Career in writing in front of her and I’m excited to see what she produces next - I think there’s another book and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. Highly, highly recommend reading this book - you will be hooked.

On page 1, sixteen-year-old Kate Edison watches as her father succumbs to a heart attack. On the next page, Kate, now 26, begins the interview process for a CIA position, where her father worked before his death. Between her studies, over the years, to become an exceptional job candidate and her photographic memory, she earns an offer to join the CIA.

And then L. A. Clayton kicks this adventure into high gear. The author creates a stunning and complex plot moving at a relentless pace. Well-developed characters, inventive and heart-stopping situations, and twists that challenge expectations make this an exhilarating read. To call Ten Seconds to Dead a thriller is truly an understatement, and L. A. Clayton’s storytelling prowess may become addictive for the die-hard thriller fan.

“Ten Seconds To Dead” by L.A. Clayton is the debut novel from a promising new author. In my experience, thrillers can be a bit of a gamble. Not the case for this book. I couldn’t put it down. It’s told from the point of view of the likable protagonist. The narrative is relatable and carries an undertone of sarcasm. This author is a girl after my own heart! I find I’m missing the cast of characters now that I’ve finished. I’m hoping we will hear more from them in the future.
This book is a delightful blend of thrills, humor, and romance. It was a pleasure to read it.

I chose this book because of the title and the intriguing synopsis. What a ride! I found my favorite book of 2020. When a woman finally has a chance at the job she was made for, her life is destined for a deadly alternative.

Kate was sixteen years old when her father died right in front of her. With her photographic memory and excellent instincts, her father knew she was destined to work for the CIA and follow in his footsteps. After weeks of painstaking mental and physical training as a CIA recruit, encouragement from the very attractive and kind CIA Officer Lyon who recruited her for the agency gives her hope that she got the job. But what she receives is an offer she cannot refuse… or else.

Her fate is in the hands of the Alternative Government Initiative (AGI) which is a highly-classified shadow government where its main purpose is “to take power in the occurrence that our current government becomes incapacitated”. Only current AGI agents, retired AGI agents, the current president, and past presidents know about AGI. Though she is angry at how they give her no choice but to accept the job, she is told her father worked for them too so she joins the agency. But did she do the right thing? She’s finding dead bodies at the AGI facility in Montana and her life is in grave danger if she is caught. She feels so alone and doesn’t know who to trust anymore. Who can she turn to to help her expose AGI and it’s dangerous practices? If AGI catches her, she has ten seconds to dead.

I loved this fantastic thriller by a debut author! It had me on the edge of my seat from the first chapter and had me reading well into the night to find out what happened. Kate is an exceptionally intelligent and hardcore agent who is thrown into a whirlwind of espionage and dangerous missions. Her fellow recruits are a great supporting cast and good friends who give Kate some humanity and give the story depth.

The secret behind the “ten seconds to dead” phrase is genius. I can’t say any more than that without giving it away so you’ll just have to read this gripping thriller! I guarantee it won’t disappoint. Recommend very highly!

Thank you to Ms. Clayton for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.

L.A. Clayton https://www.authorlaclayton.com is the author of four novels. Ten Seconds to Dead was published in 2020 and is the first book of her Ten Second series.

I received an ARC of this book through https://www.netgalley.com with the expectation of delivering a fair and honest review. Due to scenes of violence and mature situations, I categorize this novel as R. The primary character is Katherine ‘Kate’ Edison.

Edison has just finished law school and passed the bar on her first try. Her father would have been proud of her, but he is gone. He died in front of her. Now she is ready to follow in his footsteps. He was a CIA man.

Since her father’s death, she has been preparing to be a CIA agent. She secures an interview, and it is going well. As she leaves, she is covertly contacted by the AGI, the Alternate Government Initiative. AGI is an ultra-secret US government agency. They want her as an agent, just like her father was before her.

Edison accepts the AGI offer and undergoes rigorous training. Even before she has finished her training, she is catapulted into the field. She faces danger in both the training and missions. She begins to sense that something is wrong. She soon begins to fear that she has been deceived. That she is not really working for a government agency. Can she discover the truth and survive?

I enjoyed the 10+ hours I spent reading this 389-page thriller and mystery. The story is filled with action, suspense, and intrigue. I like the chosen cover art, and I give this novel a rating of 5 out of 5.

At sixteen-years-old Kate Edison witness her father's death right before her eyes. Kate's dad worked for the CIA and after his death Kate decides to follow in her father's footsteps and join the CIA herself. Kate works real hard and puts everything she has into her interview and tryouts to see if she is CIA material. Kate is a very competitive person and never wants to lose no matter what she is doing. She will push her body to its limits to accomplish her tasks.

Before Kate completes her CIA training she is offered a job by a secret government agency. Kate is giving some time to make her decision as to which job she wants. Does she want to work for the CIA or does she want to work for this other more secretive government agency?

Kate decides to take the job offered by the more secretive government agency. After she begins the job she uncovers some information that if kept to her could result in the loss of millions of lives. If she exposes this information to the world it could cost her, her life but save millions in the process.

Kate wants to do what is right no matter what the cost is to her but she can't bring these people down all by herself but there is no one in this secret agency that she trust. The only thing she can do is bring in someone from the outside to help her stop this enemy. This is a dangerous job that neither Kate nor her friend may come out of alive.

Ten Seconds to Dead is a fast paced book that drew me in from the first page and had me pulling for Kate from the very beginning. Kate is a very strong and determined girl who never gives up. She will fight for what is right until her dying breath.

Ten Seconds to Dead has enough action to keep the pages tuning and the eyes glued to the page wanting and waiting to see where Kate takes you next and how she handles any given situation that she finds herself in. Ten Seconds to Dead will have you on the edge of your seat trying to guess as to what is going to happen next throughout the whole story leaving you with lots of suspense with each turn of the page.

Ten Seconds to Dead is one book I highly recommend to anyone who likes a good spy mystery thriller with lots of suspense.

Alias’s Sydney Bristow meet Kate Edison…
While the details and names may be different, Ten Seconds to Dead fills a void Alias fans have been feeling since the series ended in 2006. It is filled with covert operations, computer hacking, devices the layman only wishes she had access to, and a tough heroine who doesn’t disappoint. You will find yourself holding your breath as Kate manages to escape harrowing mission after mission, but not always unscathed. Kate’s desire to follow in her father’s footsteps leads her through many twists and turn, but Clayton does an excellent job explaining what at first feels like very disjointed missions Kate is sent on by the AGI. Kate does find a little romance along the way, which has the reader looking forward to the next reunion of the characters. The book gives some closure to the Kate’s immediate threat; however, the reader is left hanging in anticipation of the sequel. Please hurry, L.A. Clayton, as this reader needs to know what Kate and Lyon plan to do next!

Wow! 4.5 stars from me!

I read this book on a recommendation from my sister (I was the guinea pig and was told to tell her if she should read it, the author is a friend of her friends). This is far from the normal book genres I read, so I honestly was skeptical at first. I usually read a book of this size in 24-48 hours and this took me 4 days because I needed time to decompress (romance is my go too genre, and though this has some romance, thriller was way strong in this one).

It was such a great book, the storyline was so believable it was kinda scary to me and makes you question who you trust in life! The characters were very well developed and the scene descriptions was 100% on point.

I’m super excited about the sequel coming out this summer and can not wait to read more about how this goes down! (This was so hard to write about with out spoilers!)

I decided to read this series after seeing it on Goodreads and recognizing the author’s photo. Apparently she is someone I knew when I was younger!
I thought this first book in the series was great (and I think it’s her first published book, which makes it even more impressive). There was so much suspense and action, but she didn’t neglect character development. I’m excited to read the next two.
As a side note, this author is a very funny person in real life. So is the one sister of hers that I’ve met, who actually writes fun romantic comedies. I kind of expected the same genre from L.A. Clayton and was surprised to find out her books were thrillers. I was skeptical that they’d be any good, to be completely honest, but was pleasantly surprised.

Also, aside from quite a bit of violence, this book is clean (no sex; minimal language, if any)!

Mind. Blown.

Quite frankly, I have no idea how the author's brain created this alternate government idea full of impeccable details. WOW. I was on the edge of my seat through the whole story devouring page after page wondering what would transpire. I didn't want it to end, but yet wanted some closure for the characters. The ending is somewhat of a cliffhanger, but definitely gives some closure, which I am thankful for.
There were some gruesome scenes throughout the story, as one can expect from stories of spies and espionage. If you have an aversion to that, I suggest skipping this book, but if not, grab this book and don't expect to put it down for a LONG time! I love that there were also some hilarious parts of the books that made me laugh out loud. It helped to keep some of the severity in check.

I received this book as a free ARC copy. I was really excited because I really love suspense/romance novels! I love reading new authors and seeing what new ideas they can bring to the board.

The main characters were very likable. The plot kept making turns that kept me guessing. There was a couple spots that dragged a little for me, but mostly I was trying to figure out how this part was important for the story. It did bother me a little how different relationships developed in the book. I guess I felt like I needed more character/relationship development.

I loved that this is a clean book (some kissing but not making out or touching/undressing)! I look forward to reading this author’s next book!
