The exciting third installment in the Spellwood Academy series!
Kyra still isn't sure exactly who wants her dead, but she's getting closer to the truth.
After a betrayal from someone she deeply cares about, though, she isn't even sure she cares.
But as the autumnal fae holiday of Hollowfell approaches, something disastrous is happening on Spellwood Academy's campus. People are being shot with arrows. Poisoned with mists. Attacked by vicious birds.
I've been making up stories since I was five years old, and now I'm thrilled to be able to do it as a full-time job. I have an obsession with dark fantasy, dystopian futures, and Pride and Prejudice-style love stories full of witty banter and sizzling, unspoken feelings. When I'm not writing, I'm creating digital art, reading funny blogs, or watching my favorite shows (which include TVD and BSG). I live with my geeky husband and our two bad cats in Atlanta, GA.
Attention Book Bloggers ~ If you are interested in interviewing me or reviewing one of my books, send me a message. I'd love to hear from you! (Please note: I am currently not able to fulfill most requests for print copies at this time, but you can always ask. However, I am ALWAYS able and happy to provide e-copies or PDFs of my books in exchange for an honest review.)
If you're wondering why I categorize books as "breathless," "cake," or "amnesia," check out this blog post!
Story line continues to fill in with more facts about Kyra’s lineage - Nope, Nope, Nope...no spoilers - and her growing presence both at Spellwood and in Briar. Fantastic “War” between houses with unexpected results. I wish the after results had gotten more writing time as I feel there could be some hilarious pairings and misunderstandings. The character and world building are a strong suit of the Author’s, however, given the Title of the book, barely any thought was given to Hollowfell. The book felt like it ended too abruptly - rudely - as if someone came and ripped the last 5 chapters out of the back of the book. Being a grand fan of this Author, she does enjoy her cliffhangers, yet usually gives you an equitable feeling at the end leaving you craving the next installment. This one left me feeling a bit like someone didn’t finish the book at the Barnes and Noble Cafe and ripped out the remainder to take home with them.
I genuinely loved the book, my only complain with this one and the others is that they are short!
Is anyone else hoping for more Joras ? Would definitely love to see him teach Kyra magic and defence, like partners. I would love his character to develop more, and maybe become a potential love interest ?

Hollowfell Huntress was probably my favorite book in the Spellwood Academy series so far. Kyra and Lucien struggle to move on from their break up, but there's no time for them to rest. An assassin lurks the grounds of Spellwood Academy and all signs point to Kyra being the target. For her own safety, Kyra is whisked away from Spellwood, but her absence from the school puts her in more danger as she discovers yet another aspect of her heritage long kept secret. Meanwhile, Lucien finds himself pulled into a dangerous plot in the night court while attempting to stay away from Kyra, but both of their secrets seem to pull them closer together, no matter how much they want it to be otherwise. Hollowfell Huntress is a book that ups the ante from the get-go. Ellison gets the ball rolling in terms of plot and action, and I thought the pacing of this story was absolutely perfect. I really enjoyed the expansion of the Fae world in this book, as well as its relationship with the normal human world. I also loved the twist with Joras's character, and while I know it isn't the main OTP of this series, I am kind of shipping him and Kyra. The truth behind who he is (which I won't spoil) really gives us a better glimpse into the world and the politics of the sun court. I really enjoy Ellison's books, and Hollowfell Huntress was no exception. In fact, I enjoyed it more than her other books I've read so far. With a doomed, star-crossed romance, political intrigue and lots of dangerous secrets, Hollowfell Huntress is a story about the balance between claiming one's destiny and ones heart, and the complications secrets bring to any relationship.
Series Info/Source: This is the third book in the Spellwood Academy series. I borrowed this for my Kindle through Kindle Unlimited.
Story (4/5): This continues the story of Kyra as she tries to figure out who is trying to kill her. When other students are shot with arrows and hunted on school grounds, the consensus is that this person is hunting Kyra. Spellwood Academy might not be safe for her anymore. Things are escalating with the spring court and half bloods are no longer safe in the fae courts. As a results many are being sent to Spellwood Academy for their safety. Meanwhile, Lucien has his own issues and has been recruited for a secret mission that has him literally under a spell. Lucien and Kyra continue to be on the outs, but in addition to everything else they are dealing with they are supposed to play opposite leads in the annual school play.
This was a lot better than the second book in the series. The story about Kyra and her mysterious background and her mysterious assassins makes a lot of progress. Lucien has a lot of interesting things going on as well. The whole school play thing was the main “academy” event in the story but it tied in well with the broader story. All of the attacks happening at the academy also make things a lot more interesting and exciting. I thought this was well paced and enjoyed the progress that was made. It does end on a total cliffhanger though and is still a fairly brief story.
Characters (4/5): I liked Kyra better in this book, I am getting a better feel for her as a character. I liked seeing her grow as a character and learn to stand up for herself better. Learning more about her background and her family’s background was great too. Lucien is also filled out a lot more and featured in the story more. We spend more time with a number of other students as well. Also Joras is developed a lot more as a character too. I liked all of the characters, they aren’t amazing, but they are fun to read about and entertaining.
Setting (4/5): I continue to enjoy the creative and magical setting of Spellwood Academy. We are introduced to a few new secret and magical places on campus and some more of the traditions there. The story was expanded some to include the fae realm as a whole, I hope we eventually get to journey outside of Spellwood more.
Writing Style (3/5): The book is generally well written, easy to read, and entertaining. The story changes POV between Lucien and Kyra again...many times within the same chapter. A couple of times I had trouble remembering whose viewpoint I was reading from, but most of the time their voices are unique enough that I didn’t have that issue. This is another fairly short book and ends on a cliffhanger (which I hate...you don’t need to torture your readers in order to keep them coming back for more if you are a good writer). There were also a couple small typos throughout. Aside from those issues this was an entertaining read.
My Summary (4/5): Overall I am continuing to enjoy this series. It is a fun urban fantasy YA read, featuring fae characters. I like the characters and the setting. This is one of those fun, light, easy reads...definitely a guilty pleasure sort of read. I do hate how short these are and absolutely abhor the fact that all of these books end on a massive cliffhanger. I am caught up on the series now but plan to continue it because it’s easy and short and I am curious as to what will happen. In the future though I will probably only start a series by Avery Ellison that is already finished. I would recommend this if you have Kindle Unlimited and are looking for a light, fun, easy YA urban fantasy read that features fae. I don’t think I would flat out buy these books because they are expensive for how short they are.
Relyn Rating: 4.5 Oooo. I love all the intrigue, the magic, the yearning.
I love rom-coms, romance novels, and love stories. So I read a lot of them. This is great fun for me, but it means that my personal "market" is oversaturated. It will take a truly great romance to get more than three stars. In case you are interested:
Relyn's personal rom-com & romance novel rating system 5 stars - This book is excellent. It stands out from the hundreds of other love stories I've read, and I loved it. 4 stars - Oh, I really, really liked this one. 3 stars - This was a good, entertaining book and I'm glad I read it. 2 stars - Meh - boring, or overdone, or in some other way just not a good fit for me 1 star - This one stunk.
This is probably by far my favorite out of the books I've read of this series. Kyra's story is really beginning to develop in this novel and we're learning more and more about her, after so many secrets being kept in the first two installments. I think the strong point in this particular book is the character growth/development it brings. Especially the main character, Kyra. In the first two books, I didn't really care too much about Kyra's character, there was just something about her that I didn't particularly like that I can't place my finger on. But this book made me change my mind about her and I'm really excited to see what the conclusion brings.
What a tangled web of s rats and lies. Kyra was still in the dark about so many things Thank God she manned up and started demand g answer as I was getting annoyed how blindly she followed along. About time she stood up and told er family what she wanted. Lucien a d Kyra are the star crossed lovers in the story, one as old as time but both spelled with secrets they cannot reveal to each other. Some one knows ger secret and I wonder if up someone close to her. Interesting times ahead I hope she gets the life she wants.
Kyra and Lucian broke up? Only, it wasn't even them, it was a friend of Lucian. Kyra now knows they can be together. Lucian is under a spell and they can't communicate while he is being controlled. Lyra also knows the doctor who saved her and that the court that wants her dead.
Still a great continuation of Kyra’s story but a little bland I felt like not much actually happened in this story, and all the revelations the characters actually discovered were kept a secret from the readers...which frustrates me to no end. Here’s hoping the next book is better.
This book was the best of the series so far…lots of secrets revealed but so many left yo uncover. All the cliffhangers drive me crazy because we have to wait so long for the next book to be published.
