The Fractured World

Rate this book
What’s the worst thing that can happen on a hiking holiday? Getting lost? Blisters? Falling out with your partner? Try being abducted by aliens and crash-landing on a strange planet that wants you dead. When avid gamer Brandon awakes surrounded by endless snow and countless monsters, he knows his survival odds look slim at best. Not that he’s planning to go down without a fight. Being a self-confessed nerd doesn’t mean he’s going to roll over and die. Brandon’s determined to get himself home and protect whoever he finds upon the way. That includes a couple of stunning alien women who need his help as much as he needs theirs. Enhanced with a strength as foreign to him as The Fractured World itself, it’s up to Brandon to rise to the occasion and show this primitive planet who’s boss. His women are counting on him, and Brandon doesn’t intend to let them down. The Fractured World contains a harem of alien beauties, plenty of steamy sex, a ton of monster-slaying violence, and a collection of survival tips I wouldn’t rely on in a crisis. You’ve been warned.

Good book overall. The secondary characters took a while to develop but they got there, and the MC was a decent guy. Not sure how much sequel potential there is here, but I would say 1-2 more books before this idea's tapped out. I'll certainly give that potential sequel a chance if it comes along.

I wanted to like it...

I've alwasy enjoyed the indulgence of a story about a generally uninteresting guy who comes across an extrodinay and extremely attractive women that (typically unreasonably) falls madly in love with him. There are lots of them out there and hit me with all the right fantasies. This one, however, became more and more painful to read the closer I got to the end till I found self stoping every other paragraph to take a minute to reflect on how stupid the main character was. The indulgent fantasy really looses its power when you loos all faith in the characters and their actions. I also started getting really sick of the constant "my mate" nonsense.

The next part of this will contain some mild spoilers.

I understand he wasn't a survival expert but there were so many things he did that were just plain dumb. The thing that really killed it all for me was his bizarre need to build a complicated pulley system to set up a lift to get them up the cliff. Just the rope was probably enough. Tie it a tree and climb up. Then he could have the others tie it to themselves and he could pull them up. He could have even used his original raft thing if he didnt trust them tieing it to themselves and just pulled them up rather than spending days creating one someone else could pull him up with. The book never really even explained how they managed to setup the pair of pullies in an effective way at the top of the cliff that made the horizontal pulling they were doing work.

I would not recommend this book to anyone, and honestly I'm probably going to go on a hiatus from reading for a bit after forcing myself to get through the end of this one...

Great book. Well written.

Great book and very well written. The sex scenes are spread out logically and are not overdone. The story stands up by itself and is not simply a vehicle to pad time between sexy chapters.

More off world fun and survival

Nothing new here. Basic kidnap earthling and dump on world with some hot chicks. Give power and watch the fun while they try to escape/survive. I enjoyed it but nothing to much above and beyond. Typical of the genre and a fun light read.

I've now read the first book in two of David Aries' series - this, and Harem Farm. If you'd told me beforehand that I would end up enjoying the farming story way more than the survival on a strange alien planet story, I'm not sure I'd believe you. But, here we are.

The introduction is fine (overly obnoxious best friend character aside), and the immediate plot hook is at least mildly intriguing. But it goes downhill from there, until it eventually drops off a cliff (in terms of maintaining interest). Everything is rushed, and this book feels incredibly short. I was over a quarter of the way through before I even realized it, but not in a good way. It was in the "I feel like I've barely even read anything yet" way.
Brandon, the protagonist, is initially described as a shut-in nerd. The author makes sure to hammer that aspect home once he's stranded on the planet and has to physically exert himself. The problem is, Brandon hardly acts like an actual shut-in nerd would. Once Brandon stumbles across the beautiful alien princess and her fierce amazonian bodyguard, he immediately starts contradicting the bodyguard's ideas and plans, and even forcibly grabs the princess' arm to drag her along in the direction he thinks is best. I can guarantee you that there is not a shut-in nerd on the planet who would act even remotely that way. Maybe in their dreams, but not in reality.
Then there are the relationships. Relationships are one of the biggest reasons to read these types of novels. You want to see how they unfold and progress. But, that basically doesn't happen in this novel.
Also, the climax of the novel is rather lame.

While I didn't really like it, I didn't hate it. It also was, as I said earlier, not much of a commitment - it flew by. Because of that, I'll probably check out the next book, to see if there's any improvement. I'm more interested in his Harem Farm series, though, which is still kind of hard to believe.

I enjoyed reading this book.

This book managed to get me engaged with the story very quickly. The pacing was good and I enjoyed the progression of the characters as the author worked to develop all of the characters not just the MC. The survival part of the story was scratching a rich that has been missing since MSE and Tamer series.

Every Mans Dream or Nightmare

Quite an adventure awaits a nerd left alone on an alien world after being transformed while hiking with a friend back on Earth. What he discovers while searching for his friend, thinking perhaps he was in a similar predicament, makes his demise much better. Lots of danger, unusual environments, and 3-beautiful women weave a great adventure. I enjoyed the read and the personalities of each person Brandon interacts with from start to finish. Very descriptive writing. Easy to place the tale in your minds eye. I recommend this story to those who are broad minded and just like a good old adventure without being a critic.

Good read

Well this book was good enough that I got real posses off when my tablet battery went dead at the last few chapters. The proof reading could of been better but then I can not spell very well either. LOL

A new entry in my top ten of Harem / erotic fantasy books
would be 5 star but one complaint: see below

The Fractured World is pretty damn good. Very similar to Mask of the Template and Tamer: King of Dinosaurs. A few other similarities with the classic Sci-fi series "Saga of the Well World" by Jack L. Chalker (70's - 80's). Likeable MC who does the right thing, hostile world survival trope stuff, and the erotic element feels fresh and non repetitive. Yes it is a bit derivative BUT, it takes a lot of my favorite tropes and sands off the rough edges and makes all the right changes.
Of special note to Anglophiles! If David Aries is not British, he's got the lingo down. I do not know if this is the first harem novel from England, but it's the first I've read. to Dave Aries- Good on you mate!
Now the complaint that cost a star. What the actual bloody hell was with the lift? Brandon spent three days to build an elevator car to climb up over a 150 foot cliff? (50 meters) YES! the MC builds a raft like platform (a la Gilligan's Island) with guard rails like a gazebo to carry his girls/wives over the cliff. This was one example of a fair few WTF things from the book. This might seem like a minor nit-pick (and in some ways it is) but several times I wondered what the hell was going on. I started making excuses in my head for Brandon, and then I started making excuses for David Aries. Then I started to wonder if it was a metaphor for EU regulations run amok. Now I don't care what it was meant to be because it broke the narrative flow and made me question weather David Aries was taking the piss.
-Other than the MC being painfully stupid in 3-4 special instances of an otherwise clever career of solving problems, this book was a gem and I look forward to the next one.

Truly wonderful story!

This story about Brandon, Casella, Faris, and Trez. Was a fun sci Fi adventure story to read. With engaging characters, deadly monsters, and an unusual planet. That the main characters have yet to barely explore. I look forward to further books in this storyline. To find out how they discover that the planet is an artifact. Made by some possibly unknown super advance alien race. Book two's teaser info makes it sound quite interesting.

Awesome

Never before have I read and Deen so completely engrossed in a book like I was this one not sure if sharing a name with the protagonist did the trick or if it was the way Brandon ended up in the situation he is in and all the things that happened to him that had me so in to this book but it is a series I am going to buy and look forward to the next installment

Barely made it twelve percent in.

Just bad. All the characters were one dimensional and over done. I can not read a story about people I care absolutely nothing about.

Audiobook.

Overall, my personal experience with the book was mild ironic enjoyment: it's so bad that I had a bit of fun mocking it.

To start, the buzzwords: this is an Isekai, 'Hyper-Masculine'-Fantasy, told through the framing device of Alien Abduction, and giving a skinny shut-in gamer magical superpowers via science-fantasy magic.

To decode that a bit, the story spends a few short chapters rapidly explaining the 'backstory': Nerd gets abducted by aliens, Nerd escapes aliens onto alien planet, Nerd 'rescues' an alien hottie, she gives him magical superpowers. Once that is established, the real story begins: Nerd gets to be the 'Big, Tall, Strong, Well-Endowed, Competent, Manly Man', who gets to have a harem of hot ladies, take care of and provide for them, and have regular hot sex that he's awesome at. All this fulfilling the 'Masculine Ideal', as imagined by extremely conservative gender roles.

This is all for his Feminine Foil, the first of the 'Love Interests': a 'Small, Short, Weak, Huge-Titted, Incompetent, Feminine Woman'. The book adds on further, to really hammer home how much of a fantasy this is: She's never so much as talked with, touched, or known a man before, is a virgin; yet is also extremely skilled in sexual-servicing techniques, and is incredibly horny for the Main Character as soon as they hit it off. She is also perpetually happy, giddy, bubbly, kind, naive, gentle, and caring. She's the 'Feminine Ideal', as imagined by extremely conservative gender roles.

This is the main topic/appeal of the book: A 'not manly' man (a weak gamer nerd) suddenly, magically, gets to live out the fantasy of being a Masculine Man, and be married to Fantasy Feminine Women. It is not interested in writing interesting or logical characters, having interesting conversations, or telling an interesting plot; It's just a chain of events to let the Man act Manly, and the Women to act sexy and Feminine. The book's idea of "Man Acting Manly" frequently involves fighting unnaturally aggressive 'Monsters', so there's a lot of unnecessary 'fight scenes'.

The book was not written to actually make the Main Character act like a Nerd, however; instead, being written like a generic always-do-the-right-thing heroic self-insert protagonist. So, in order to 'sell' the fact that he's a Nerd, the book add lots of awkward references to games and nerd culture: 'But then, I tripped on a root! Damn, I guess you could say I rolled a Nat-One!', 'Wow, this hot lady likes me! I fell like I just got an epic-loot drop!', 'I swung the axe, but it was so heavy! Damn, this looks so much easier in DarkSouls!'.

From the way the dialogue and internal monologues are written, I've personally come to the conclusion that the Author's intended 'tonal voice' (the mental voice you'd read the book in), would be very similar to 90's-2000's Sonic the Hedgehog. "It's all just 'fun and games', why are you taking the plot seriously, geez-louise!"

A special note to the descriptive writing, which was particularly bad: it tries to do the Epic-Descriptive style, but doesn't actually have a solid understanding of what the 'big-words' actually mean, and uses them incorrectly on multiple occasions. This is on top of the usual problem with Epic-Descriptive: being way too wordy for no reason. You don't need to add four whole sentences just describing how bad smelling the monster is, nor do we need another 5 sentences describing just how much blood gushes out of the thing once cut.

I will mention the one good point I noticed: While the book starts off describing Character A and Character B as being unreasonably stupid, to the point that the book genuinely doesn't make any sense, it is slowly revealed that they are acting that stupid because of past traumas, and their stupidity, while still very stupid, at least makes sense narratively. Very few books manage to 'justify' their characters like this, so a small shout-out there.

With all that said, I don't recommend this book. The target audience, being insecure men who just want to imagine a world where they get to be cool and get hot wives, would be better served by other books in the genre, if not therapy.

Surviving Together

Space opera harem
MC Brandon has quite the adventure with alien women. Once or twice Brandon was reminded about a sister he lost, but it was only hinted at in a bit more detail three-quarters of the way through the novel, and perhaps its a remnant character arc that was culled during editing. It's not in conflict with the odd-couple buddy arc set up in the beginning, but since it was retained, Brandon's sister and her death should have been introduced earlier rather than the two fragmentary references we have now. Very minor point, and probably introduced to show why taking care of females is such a strong trait in the MC. But I'd argue it wasn't needed. Some men are protective of females through nature, nurture, or both, just like some stand up to oppose bullies and injustice without having to be told to do so. Some men and women are decent from the outset.

I originally categorized this book as science fiction, but the cliff battle moved beyond the norm. Still enjoyable, but not so believable.

Brandon treats the alien women as people and social equals, which seduces them as much as his intimate personal attention does. Each of the women respond to his "backwater" social attitudes about females, and each grows socially and-or emotionally because of their contact with him. That helped make this story even more enjoyable.

This could be a standalone novel, the start of a series, or at least earn a sequel. The fact that high tech does not function, and that mixed and unnaturally diverse environments are adjacent, along with creatures and plants known from other worlds scream that the planet is an artificial zoo world, and is more likely to be visited in the future by caretaker-specimen collectors than abandoned is an open door to more stories. It's even likely the starship-eating metaleater creatures which attack passing starships may have been planted there rather than being wandering monsters.

If there is a sequel, I'd buy it.

Overall pretty good

Pleasantly few typos and other grammatical errors. It was a quick read in that it was never overly complex, just a quick and easy adventure.

Something that stood out was the various and varying descriptions, especially during sexy time. After reading a few books with steamy scenes in them, you tend to find common themes and phrases. This author's writing stood out in that regard, and in a good way.

Worth a read of you're looking for something light between other books.

Totally unexpected

I didn't know what to expect when reading the title and the first page. It started off kinda slow and not very interesting, but when the spacecraft came it had me thinking of other stories of books with characters having adventures in space. Fortunately, I had good experiences with these stores. Therefore, I decided to continue to read on and if didn't disappoint. I pace of the story and its starting off pretty good. I will need to read the next volume in the series to get a feel if it is worth my time to continue reading. However, it is a good start.

Nice

This book really does feel a lot like how MSEs Tamer series did. Its a bit less involved with the specifics of how he is doing stuff but still a fun wilderness survival harem book. Very fun. Want more.

Yet again I find an interesting story that I desperately want to extend into a full series. There's so much more to learn about the characters and the settings. I enjoyed this!
