The Heights Crew #1

Uppercut Princess

Rate this book

Vengeance is NOT my middle name.

It’s in my blood.

It’s tattooed on my skin.

It’s with me 24/7. The thing that drives me.

It’s also what brings me to Rawley Heights. No one would willingly come here otherwise. But me? I don’t have a choice.

Here, everyone fears the Heights Crew. They’re not just some small-town gang, they’re the real deal. Crime. Sex. Murder. Angry, self-obsessed dudes with bad attitudes.

And they’re exactly who I need to get my vengeance from.

I have my work cut out for me—especially where Bat, Brawler, and Magnum are concerned—but don’t worry, they have no idea who they’re dealing with.

I’m counting on it.

I finally caved and devoured the first two books. And truth be told, I wish I had waited; between the cliffhangers and the awesomeness, I low key want to die right now.

Uppercut Princess in one word? A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.

+ It's not as dark as it seems to be but it for sure ain't shiny.
+ It's not a bully romance but one of the love interests checks all the abusive boxes.

Kyla, Johnny, Brawler, Oscar, Magnum. They are all somewhat broken, have something dark inside of them, and are puppets to a world much bigger than they think where no light is currently waiting for them at the end of the tunnel. Uppercut Princess is phenomenal and I can't wait to get my hands on the complete series.

Meh

Good idea and storyline but really inconsistent where it counts. Also features another hyped up “badass” MC that actually isn’t really that badass.
The description and ratings paint a good picture - and sure, she is physically fit, can throw down in the ring and talks a big game about strength in her internal monologues; but then she is inconsistent, wishy-washy and jarringly weak when it comes to her actions (unless she “snaps” and just throws her weight around).
Physically strong? Check.
Internally/emotionally strong and intelligent? Not really, just occasionally.

There was also a lot of small inconsistencies with the storytelling eg:
Half way through the story her back is damaged, someone brings it up and she notes she “can’t even feel it”, then in the same breath states that “it hurts”. She then proceeds with being in pain (fair enough), but then easily rolls onto her back after a recovery nap right after and is then pushed forcefully back into a wall to be seduced with no mention of it, or brief internal ouch moment - and then back to being sensitive and sore about it after. 🤷🏼‍♀️
Sometimes I will overlook things like this, but unfortunately this happened quite a lot; hence the annoyance.

Overall not terrible, but I felt that it was definitely hyped up by the reviews. Hopefully this will help bring a different perspective for anyone who is trying to decide if this book is for you!

This book is totally different from my usual reads but I was enthralled from the get-go.
This is the first book in and a reverse-harem storyline with elements of bully.

Kyla is out for revenge after the murder of her parents so she joins Rawlings heights purely to infiltrate the heights crew.
The boss big daddy K is the man in charge and the one she holds responsible for her parent's deaths.

After showing off her skills in the fight ring she comes to the boss’s son Johnny Rocket’s attention who claims her for his own, This, in turn, paints a target on her back meaning she also gets to spend time for protection with others connected to the gang.

This one is slow burn and much of this story here is the set-up of what’s to come, This essentially builds the connections and relationships with all of what goes on here being quite toxic and extremely gritty.
We have Brawler who helps run the fights and also wants to protect Kyla, Oscar nickname bat a gang member and quarterback football player whose already tried leaving the heights once.
Magnum is the muscle and bodyguard of the group and then there’s Johnny himself who is totally unhinged possessive and with a very skewed outlook on what is acceptable and normal behaviour mostly due to his dysfunctional upbringing with his father.

The individuals here are all very diverse with such distinct personalities.
This was jam-packed and ends on a cliffhanger I will definitely be reading more of this series I am interested in seeing just how it is all going to come together especially in regards to Kyla’s bonds to the crew.

ETA: I randomly thought about this series today and I actually had to search through my reading history to remember the name. And honestly, just thinking about it makes me mad. Johnny, specifically. There's something about an author making a disgusting character redeemable (ref: the royals of fu series by samgel). But this book was not it. Johnny makes me wanna throw up and then murder him which is why I'm changing my rating to two stars. Istfg 2022 me tolerated a lot WHYYYYYYY

Edit: I just wanna make one thing clear...the 4⭐️ rating is for Kyle, Brawler, Oscar and Magnum - NOT Johnny. He's toxic with a capital T🚩🚩🚩. But I still find myself making excuses for him with the way he changes his personality HELPPPP😭😭😭

Wow. Okay, I didn't expect for this to be so good. Kyla's def my girl and Brawler hands down has a permanent place in my heart. Even Oscar and Magnum are growing on me tbh. The only person I'm still on the fence about is Johnny. Honest to God, he was giving me some major Ryle vibes (from IEWU) in the beginning, but towards the end, I wasn't really sure what to think. I mean, no doubt that he's a shitty person and a completely entitled asshole...not to mention the fact that I feel like bitch slapping him. But I feel like there IS scope for redemption there. Welp, let's see how things progress in the next book!🥰🤎

*SPOILER*
The reason why I felt like bitch slapping him was because he fucked some random girl in a dressing room. Like why??? You just supposedly claimed a girl the night before like she's your property and you can't even show her an ounce of respect??? My mind is still confused as to whether this counts as cheating or not because they weren't actually "together" per se. Idk...I've let a lotta shit go in fiction that I wouldn’t irl. Maybe I just *might* change my mind about this lil shit lmaoooooo😃

DNF,

Too many inconsistencies.
Wishy washy heroine, naive and wannabe-badass.
I was rolling my eyes every time.
The guys were copy paste of each other. They don’t have much to add to the story and I guess I’m not the biggest fan of bully romance or even high school bully-whatever-drama books. It’s not credible and annoying.
I couldn’t force myself to finish this book, I was struggling like crazy so I’ve stopped around 45%.
Don’t bother in my opinion. Unless if you like bully books with immature characters, drama just for drama, inconsistencies and a weak plot with potential.

Firstly, I just want to say wow. E.M. Moore certainly knows how to reel you in and then leave you hanging! If you happen to be like me, and have absolutely zero patience when waiting for a sequel book to be released, perhaps hold off on reading this one until Arm Candy Warrior has been released as well, because like I said; WOW. Leaving a book on a cliffhanger that big and dramatic takes some guts, and waiting until April now will be the most tortuous time of my life.

So, Kyla (loving that name, and you'll see why when you read the book)… This girl is Bad. Ass. She's got vengeance on the brain. She'll take no prisoners, spare no mercy to see that justice is served. I liked just how confident she was. She didn't let anyone use her, didn't let anything happen to herself that she didn't want done. She was so strong and determined, single-minded in her pursuit, focused on her goal. She didn't have any of the typical stereotypes of a defenseless girl plunged into a dark, dangerous world. She threw herself in headfirst, ready to fight to the death. I absolutely loved that about her. She could count on herself. She didn't have to constantly rely on anyone else. That was such a pleasant change from other YA books in the same genre.

The story flowed really well. I could see why every scene was in the book, every conversation had it's place. There were no unnecessary tidbits thrown in to slow down the plot or temporarily distract the reader, which was really good too. I did feel like the prologue was a massive spoiler for the scene it was taken from, and would have preferred the prologue to be just hinting at what was to come, instead of explicitly stating it, but it didn't spoil the tone or pace of the book in the long run. I also feel like the ending was rushed, which I can understand because I was certainly rushing to finish this book too once all the action started. Personally, I just needed more detail. Detail of the surroundings, detail in the characters appearances, more detail to break down the emotions of these characters. Detail makes or breaks a book for me, and unfortunately Uppercut Princess lacked this is some places. But don't think this detracts from the overall plot of the book. It was still absolutely brilliant.

E. M. Moore hooks you in from the start. She offers up a strong, empowered female protagonist taking charge of her own life. She offers up some extremely hunky guys which certainly made me stop in my tracks. She offers up a compelling backstory that tugs on your heartstrings and has you rooting for Kyla the whole damn way. And then she leaves you on the steepest of cliffhangers so you can torture yourself coming up with conspiracy theories for the next few months.

If you're one for torturing yourself, 100% go and read this book! I can't believe you've waited this long. If you're waiting for the release of Arm Candy Warrior, go into hibernation. Or a deep freeze. There is no way this book will stay in the shadows and there's no way you can avoid it until April. I believe I will be taking my own advice on this one.

...

This had potential. It got ruined by the way it ended. Those type of cliffhanger endings get overused by authors who don't trust us to be invested enough to continue reading based on the story. For me, that results in a lower rating. I didn't bother adding the next book to my calendar or joining the reader group. This is my first time reading this author and I don't know if I will continue the series. Maybe once it's complete, if it's still on KU.

The story is about a girl who is trying to avenge the death of both parents. She changes her name and goes into gang territory for her last year of high school to accomplish this.

She's a fighter and uses this as a way to get in. It works. Lots of drama and stuff happen. Story gets interesting and then cliffhanger. Disappointing.

Cliffy alert. Holy crap. Um, you're gonna have to excuse this pathetic review...but I need the next book in this series like yesterday.

This is the first book I've read by this author, but you know that whole stalkerish thing Amazon's got going on...based on your reading preferences...we think you will like... Yet again, they weren't wrong.

Spotify playlist! ✔️
Bully book✔️
Strong female main character✔️

I don't typically read RH or mafia-esque books...but this isn't a smutty book, and honestly, the writing is strong enough...you kind of lose yourself in the storyline. Okay, I've actually put more time in this review than I planned on and I need to find out what happens off the end of that cliff the author tossed me from😳. 4 stars.

1.5 stars.

+Kyla was a bad-ass fighter.

-However, Kyla had more faults than positives that made her a frustrating MC. She is a terrible planner. You think if you're gonna plan to murder someone, you'd have a better a contingency plan. She's wishy-washy and if she can't make a decision about a boy, how does she plan to kill someone...
-The boys were just a bit meh; dark & broody - check; golden haired bad boy - check; unstable daddy's boy - check; stoic older guy - check. However, none of them stood out. They are just copy/pastes from every other book like this.

Read other books by this author in the future: yes

This review is about book one and two, as I binged both of them within two days. It was a buddy read with the #cakeeaters crew. And I enjoyed the buddy read.
The FMC is called Kyla, she moved to the Heights where the Heights Crew rules. And she is on a mission. First day in school she meets Oscar a member of the Crew. He pulls her in his trouble with a girl, who wants to be his girlfriend. And this ends in a lot of trouble for Kyla. She also meets Browler, how seems to be a tough guy and the outside, but is actually a good guy on the insider. Her trouble ends in her fighting a girls in an underground circuit. And because she pretended that she is the underdog with no muscles everybody is pretty much caught red handed, when she wins the fight and shows that she has a lot of muscles but she also gains the attention of Johnny Rocket, who claims her. Rocket is a real special guy. On one had, he tries to be good to Kyla but then he mishandles her and treats her badly, but for her, he is part of her plan to get close to the leader of the crew. And she succeeds here. And the leader makes her his top fighter, and makes a deal with another gang that if she wins a fight for him, than he gets the right to run the fight circuit and the other gang has to leave the city. This ends in Kyla winning and the crew killing the leaders of the the rival gang. And here ends the first book, which is a train wreck really. And the ending really asked for the next part, which was luckily already release.

The next part moves on like the first book. Kyla is living with Rocket, but her relationship with Oskar and Browler gets more intense and also the Bodyguard Magnum seems to be interested in her. So this book is about hiding out, because they have to find out if the leaders of the rival gang survived the shoot out, then moving the relationship on and randomly Kyla tries to move on with her plan to kill the leader.

I liked both books very much it’s my kind of train wreck. There are triggers, because Rocket is abusive, and Kyla makes too many excuses for him. But still at the end of book 2 I am pining after book three!

So overall I liked the series, the nicknames of the crew are a bit crazy and I really like Magnum. Definatly a 4 stars read!

Exceptional. Intriguing. An Unforgettable, Unputdownable Read!!

This book will dig its claws into you so deep, you'll relish the pain with sadistic pleasure. Each word, each page, is like the murmur of a prayer. Brawler is an enigma I simply cannot wait to devour. Oscar--Lawd, he's hotter than a mother f'er. And Johnny ... He's the angel of death clad in a fitted suit.

Uppercut Princess will destroy you, then meticulously piece you back together. I simply cannot wait for The Heights Crew, Book 2!

OMG!!!

Gahh I love this group! They remind me of that quote about staring into the dark abyss and finding it staring back at you. Kyla looks into the dark underworld of organized crime and finds her own demons staring back at her from the eyes of some surprising men. She thought it was going to be black and white, bad guys versus the good, and fortunately for us readers, that is t the case at all. I literally bit all my nails off during that last chapter! That cliffhanger is going to keep my tense for dayyyyyssss!! I can’t wait for the next chapter in this beautiful revenge story!

What a mess - you are missing too much background to really get her drift for revenge.

Also, I fuxking hate Stockholm syndrome. If a dude treats you badly, you dont make excuses for him. Cut him off. Grow some self esteem!!!!

And rh? Not in this book... more like a love triangle.

Huge cliffy. Im done with this author.

I know, I know... this book has some amazing reviws and a high rating. But the fact that it took me three days to finish it, kindoff shouts it all. Somewhere just past the halfway mark I commented that I am on the fence with this one. And reaching the end, Im still om that same fence.

Read the blurb...read the description...doesn't it just sound amazing, like something you have to read?
So what wrong then? Rocket. Johnny. Johnny Rocket, thats whats wrong. I don't mind bully books, I don't mind reverse harem books, I don't mind a little blood and suspense, but this book... I don't know, I was just not sucked into the story. I just couldnt feel it.😯

Starting this I thought it would be in similar lines to J Bree's Hannaford Prep series. Now thats one kickass female mc and her men....swooon.❤ So I guess maybe I just had my hopes up a little to high for this one.
Atleast I kindoff almost fell for Brawler and maybe Oscar to.😍

I'm going to wait a bit before reading book 2 because of the title with the word armcandy in it. My brain is not heading in a good direction with that. In the mean time I hope Rocket pulls his head out of his ass and I am still rooting for Brawker and Oscar. So don't mind me, I just had to vent a little. Overall it's not that bad. ☺

Now I will admit that previous E.M Moore books have been hit or miss for me what what I love about her books is that you go into them with a pre conceived notion of what you think is going to happen and she always ends up throwing me for a loop.

Uppercut Princess was intriguing, dark and intense. Some parts made me nervous as hell because I didn’t know what to expect because there were so many possibilities.

Kyla was amazing. I hate a weak heroine so the fact that she was a kick ass one that took no shit instantly made me love her.

I am dying for the next book in the series now!

When I read the prologue I did not know where the story was going. I thought I was going to DNF. However at 16% or so I could not stop reading. I fell in love with the heroine with the characters, with story. I had to know what was going to happen. I had to check if this was a RH story because it does not read like one. The heroes are all so different. So unique. This is not a smutty book. There is an actual plot!!! Imagine that!!!

Bottom line: I loved the heroine, I loved the heroes, I loved the story, I loved it all!!! Off to read book 2!!!

How can Rockets father see how much he likes h when he only met her that day?? What a plot hole
How can you tear up and feel something for someone you met yesterday whos fucking another girl in the changing room next to you?
Yoi really want me to believe shes tough?
How can you go into whole vengeance get up and not know what the gang does? Did she really just think that she can dance up to the president himself and shoot him?
I cant with this book
DNF at 50%
It started pretty good and it just kept going down

I really enjoyed this introductory book to The Heights Crew.

We have:

Kyla - smart, strong, beautiful and loyal. Looking to avenge her parents' death. However she ends up having more feels and understanding to her enemies than she ever anticipated.

Oscar - hot, quarterback, cheeky, asshole, undeniably dreamy. His intro is of a troublemaker but his true colours start to shine through and I can't wait to get to know him better.

Brawler - big friendly giant, gorgeous, muscles, tough, broody, undeniably lovable. The nicest of them all, there is no way you can't fall in love with Brawler!

Magnum - silent, bodyguard, distant, endearing he won't show you much but when he lets his guard down you see someone who will put his life on the line for you.

Last, but by no means least, Johnny - Asshole, empowering, distinguished, entitled but he knows no other way, he is the one you will least like from this book, but I think with Kyla behind him, we will eventually see his shield come down and a really lovable character!! Here's hoping I don't eat my words on that lol :)

Now on to book 2!!

Merged review:

I really enjoyed this introductory book to The Heights Crew.

Kyla - smart, strong, beautiful and loyal. Looking to avenge her parents’ death. However she finds herself having feelings and empathy to those she thought she’d despise!

Oscar - hot, quarterback, cheeky, asshole, undeniably dreamy. His intro is that of a troublemaker but his true colours start to shine through and I can’t wait to get to know him better.

Brawler - big friendly giant, gorgeous, muscles, tough, broody, undeniably lovable. The nicest of them all, there is no way you can’t fall in love with a Brawler.

Magnum - silent, bodyguard, distant, endearing. He won’t show you much but when he cares for you, you’ll see someone who will put his life on the line for you.

Last, but by no means least, Johnny - asshole, empowering, distinguished, entitled but he knows no other way, he is the one you will least like from this book, but I think with Kyla behind him, we will eventually see his shield come down and a really protective, lovable character unravel!! What to expect:
∘ Gangs - Underground fights
∘ Reverse Harem
∘ Strong FMC — wanna-be badass but kinda naive
∘ Revenge Plot
∘ Fast-paced
Tropes:
∘ "Touch her and you die" vibes
∘ Enemies to Lovers
∘ (kind of) slowburn

Trigger Warnings: gun violence, violence
+ one of the H hurts the heroine because he's considering her his possession & he cheats on her after claiming she's his.

Absolutely loved this one!! Two feisty heroines on the trot and this one fights with her fists and whatever else can be used as a lethal weapon. Revenge is a dish best served cold but Kyla goes in all guns blazing. This girl can look after herself, and with the company that she now finds herself in, she needs it. To say EM Moore sucked me in with this one would be an understatement and I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book. Bring it on, after that ending, I need MORE Ms MOORE!!

4.5 ⭐

Review - 4.5⭐

(**possible spoilers**)

This book doesn't mess around, it dives straight into the action which I lovee!! 🙌🏼 this book actually had me guessing which boys could end up in Kylas harem. Magnum is a mystery that I want to solve!! The story line is great, I need to know who Kyla really is and I'm eager for her to be herself and what the outcome will be when everyone finds out her true agenda and that she isn't in fact Kyla. Or is she?? I have alot of questions 😂 This was a great first book to the series, looking forward to seeing where this story goes!! 😁

Kyla - at the start of this book I thought she was an absoloute badass, acting like the weak helpless girl to fool everyone then BAM she is a warrior in the ring! I feel like this faltered throughout the book, she let her revenge make her look weaker, which was fine at the start of the book and something she had to keep up so her cover didn't get blown but I want to see her back to being badass and putting people in their place!! I want to see the real Kyla!! 😁

Jonny - throughout this whole book I've been trying to find anything, however little, to make me like him. Everytime I think maybe I can, he acts like a petulant child! I know it's all he knows and he doesn't know any different but still...untill, his little declaration and it's given me the slightest bit of hope for him! I'm hoping throughout the series we get to see his character grow and change for the girl he claims he wants.

Brawler - oh i adore him so much, he looks like a big, scary badass but is a big teddy bear on the inside 😁 he stood by his feelings for Kyla from the start, even knowing if Jonny found out he would be dead on the spot. He was there for Kyla and deserves his place beside her.

Oscar - I actually really like Oscar, he came across as a prick at the start but it was more the hot, facade. He ended up being really quite sweet with Kyla and torn between his unwanted duty to the heights crew and his feelings for Kyla.

Magnum - he is a big mystery to me, I have no idea if he is interested in Kyla or just being a friend when he does the small things to help her. I feel like there is more to him than we know....

Kyla. An identity born from death and destruction. The destruction of all her hopes and dreams. When what mattered most was taken from her, Kyla found a way to fight through the anger. She doesn't want a temporary fix though. She needs to get her vengeance so she can have peace of mind and she's willing to do whatever it takes to get it. Even knowing what she was walking in to, she didn't realize how hard it was going to be to accomplish. To do what needs to be done and not care about who gets caught up in the process.

Ok. Let's take a second here. If you've been reading my reviews for any length of time then you know I absolutely adore E.M. Moore's work. She captured me with her Ravana Clan. Those yummy vampires that made us all want to take a walk on the dark side. She gave us witches that had us caught up in their spell. Then you know my favorite series of last year was her Ballers series. So it was absolutely no surprise to me that I was going to love Uppercut Princess. Hell I never even read the blurb. I just jumped straight in. Knowing I was going to enjoy whatever road E.M. took us down. Yet I was still blown away. This book. I started it and could not put it down. My poor child, he was neglected all day (he's 7 he didn't die or anything. I just didn't play with him) because I was wrapped up in the world of the Heights Crew. It's dark. It's dirty. It's just what I wanted and didn't even know I wanted it.

Kyla is one bad *****. Now I know we have had some pretty fierce females in our books. E.M. has had some fierce leads. Kyla has strength in ways those others haven't had before. She's mentally prepared to do whatever it takes. She's physically prepared to do whatever it takes. She has a goal in mind and she WILL succeed.

Ok so let me tell you just a tiny bit about the story. Not too much though because you need to read it. Kyla needs to work her way into the Heights Crew. She needs to make herself important to them. So she finds her way into the underground fights. She thinks she will get put in as a permanent fighter and that's her way in. Well she draws more attention to herself than she intended and ends up being claimed by Rocket. So this does put her in a prime position to get what she wants. It also puts her in a whole mess of other trouble. She now has her world flipped and has constant supervision. Brawler and Oscar are her new babysitters. While she is obviously opposed to this at first, she finds herself drawn to the two men. I mean, you can't help but love them. She's also found a sorta ally in Magnum, Rocket's bodyguard. I have to tell you I am really intrigued by him. Then there is Rocket himself. Like Kyla, I'm not sure what I feel for him yet. Sometimes I feel he is broken and just misunderstood and then he does something really stupid and I just want to hate him. Just when we think Kyla has gotten to a great point and things are finally clicking into place, the whole freaking world just blows up. I mean, not literally but **** got all messed up.

So, here's your cliffhanger warning. Now I know, I know. Cliffhangers can be a real biscuit. We hate them, we love them. Whatever we feel, they keep us coming back for more and trust me. This is not a book you want to miss out on because of a cliffhanger. And don't worry, Erin is really good and not making us wait forever for the next book. So don't stress. Just go ahead and preorder Arm Candy Warrior.

This is a re-read--I first read this series way back when I first got a KU subscription and gorged myself trying to read as much as I could before the free trial ran out (ha!). I remember digging Johnny Rocket, but in the first book he's still very much a d-bag and I think we're supposed to be unsure if he's even endgame at all.

This was one of the first RHs I read and I can tell it shaped a lot of my preferences. Tough heroine bent on revenge? Yeah, I'm into that. Friction and jealousy between the guys? I'm into that, too! It's an RH where the guys are not already part of a coherent group, which I also enjoy.

Confession: I couldn’t wait to start the next book in this series so I immediately jumped into it before taking the time to start this review. I have now begrudgingly put down book two so I can take a moment to tell you how much I loved Uppercut Princess.

Y’all if the fact I couldn’t wait to start book two doesn’t tell you how amazing The Heights Crew is then I don’t know what will! There is nothing I want more than to watch Kyla put all these strong growly alpha males in their place. It’s hot as Hell having a woman that can knock a dude out as an FMC! Okay done talking, going back to book two now, bye!!!
