Ronald Hudson, travel writer and adventurer, visits Philip Tolefree with an anonymous letter written in cypher, which he hopes the sleuth can decode. But Tolefree is uneasy. What are Hudson's motives? Is his writer-persona a facade for espionage - or something even more nefarious? When a chance telephone call links Hudson's visit with the murder of a scientist during a country house party Tolefree's worst suspicions seem confirmed. But what is the secret of Old Hallerden? Originally published in 1936, this is a vintage murder mystery from the golden age of crime fiction.
Robert Alfred John Walling (11 January 1869, Exeter – 4 September 1949 Plympton) was an English journalist and author of detective novels, who signed his works "R. A. J. Walling".
Tolefree stories are normally quite complex: this one more than usual. The reader (this one anyway) needs to keep their wits about them to keep track of the plot. I had to go back a chapter several times after picking up the book a day later. An English country house murder with a very strange twist but very difficult to review without spoiling. Despite its' complexity I found it an enjoyable read with some very engaging characters.
I shall continue reading them in chronological order.
Mi è piaciuto...più tre e mezzo che quattro stelle...tipico romanzo inglese con ambientazioni particolari e facilmente immaginabili mentre si legge...trama discreta, ma finale senza nessun plus...
3.5 stars This mystery involves an insurance broker who is approached by a man in disguise who needs a coded letter solved! This letter leads him to a wonderfully restored country home for a house party where someone has just died -the perfect setting for an English mystery. This is my second book by this author. I tried to read “The Corpse in the Green Pyjamas” and found it a muddled mess of correspondence between characters. I gave up after 22 pages. I am so glad I tried a second book. This book was delightful!
Giallo molto "britsh", intriso di tipico humour britannico e con una buona costruzione della trama. Indizi disseminati abilmente, anche se il movente del colpevole non mi convince del tutto, è un po' deboluccio.
