A Cluster of Camphire, Words of Cheer & Comfort to Sick & Sorrowful Souls Hardcover
A Cluster of Words of Cheer and Comfort to Sick & Sorrowful Souls By Mrs. C. H. Spurgeon “A Cluster of Camphire was written by Mrs. Spurgeon after the passing of her own husband. It was intended to act as a soothing balm to those who had lost a loved one to death.” – from the new introduction. Susannah Spurgeon (1832-1903) was the wife of C. H. Spurgeon of London, known as the “Prince of Preachers.” Though her literary skills rival those of her more famous husband, much of what she has written has laid in obscurity for over a hundred years. This book represents the first reprinting of this special collection of devotional thoughts since the original edition of 1898. This volume is reproduced in a very nice hardcover “pocket edition” for ease of carrying, would make an ideal gift for anyone who has suffered the loss of a loved one, and would be of great benefit to pastors, chaplains, counselors, funeral home directors and others in like professions, as well as any Christian who desires to comfort the sick and sorrowing. This book also contains the first-time publication of some letters by Susannah and C. H. Spurgeon from a private collection, and a biographical essay on the life of Susannah Spurgeon, all of which adds to the historical value of this publication for libraries and Spurgeon collectors. Cloth hardcover in Cranberry with gold stamping on the cover and spine. 174 pages, illustrated.

This is such a good little book for any women struggling through trials. Susanna Spurgeon was very acquainted with pain and her short devotionals clinging to Christ are a beautiful encouragement in the midst of difficulties! I know she found much fruit from meditating on single verse and you can definitely see that in these.

Sweet meditations and reminders of God’s love and goodness towards his people. Also loved the short biography at the end. So many great lines to choose from but here’s one: “If all that happens to thee can be traced directly or indirectly to the hand of thy loving Lord, how gladly shouldst thou bear life’s burdens, and how perfect might be the rest in which heart and mind should dwell!”

This is another gem by Susannah Spurgeon. Everything this woman writes is edifying and beneficial. She continually points to Christ through all her writings which I appreciate so much. I can’t recommend her enough to anyone. Read this and then go read all her books and then share them with those you love.
There are plenty of devotionals and spiritual books out there that push you to do more of this or more of that, to keep looking at yourself and how much you don’t measure up and to try to do better at this or that…and then there are books like these and Susie’s other books…that just continually point to Christ and all that HE is and all that HE has done and all the promises from Him and His faithfulness despite our faithlessness. That is where the gold is, that is where the hope is, that is where it all is…in Christ. And it’s all by His Grace. Praise God.
