‘You don’t need a scent to be attractive’

Max Hudson is one of the more important authors of the genre of MM romances. Yes, there are many authors – men and women – who understand the subject matter and treat it well and erotically, but what Max adds to his stories is a fine sense of appreciation for that conflicted turning point when problems surface and history must be faced. The one thing that sets him apart from other MM authors is his careful character building before the romance sets in.

Exploring a new sort of relationship development makes this brief but well-scribed story work well. The message of the ‘romance’ is suggested in the opening thoughts of Damon Fox – ‘People flooded the gymnasium as 2000s pop played over the mega speakers. Every corner of the gym was decorated with streamers, glittering banners, and giant letter B's. The Brilliant Badgers was painted above the basketball hoop, positioned perfectly above the DJ. In each hand was a drink and on each face was a smile. The disco lights glittered over the collection of graduates who were deep in nostalgic memory. Sitting among them was Damon. He had a drink in his hand, but his face was void of a smile. Not even a grin glimmered on his lips. He raised his drink to his mouth and mechanically sipped as he studied every person who passed by his table. Not one of them stopped by or offered a greeting. It was like he was invisible.’

Having met Damon, the relationship unfolds – ‘A high school reunion. A sudden accident. Secrets revealed. Damon Fox didn't expect much from his high school reunion. He assumed it would be boring, filled with pop music and overpriced drinks. He also anticipated a crowd of people that he didn't quite care to see. And when his high school bully approaches, he assumes the worst. He expects it. And he prepares for it. Taylor Blake was a football jock. To Damon—to his long-time crush. However, amends can only take them so far. Can Damon trust this new relationship? Can he give himself over to Taylor, without reservations? How many secrets does Taylor dare keep? Will Taylor find it in his heart to tell his family the truth?’

Another insightful, fine novel from Max Hudson – a solid story with terrific characters. Highly recommended.

Taylor Blake was Damon Fox’s bully from high school, and when he went to his tenth high school reunion, he was shocked when the nightmare from high school walked over to his table and sat down. Damon had had a crush on the man before him, who wouldn’t; Taylor was handsomely gorgeous and had been a football jock back then of course with a girlfriend; girlfriend who Taylor had knocked up and ran right after graduation.

The last thing Damon ever expected was for Taylor to apologize for how the man had treated him back then. Damon was sure it was some sort of joke or prank being done to him, but by the end of their conversation, Damon had his doubts and maybe the man really was trying to apologize for his past behavior, but little did Damon know Taylor had a secret he’s carried since they were teenagers.

During their talk Taylor had confessed to Damon about his anger and had gone through anger management and was still seeing a therapist. Later, when Taylor drove away from his high school reunion, he was deep in thought when he was struck by a car. He sustained minor injuries, but still need physical therapy for whiplash. Guess who his PT was—right Damon.

With the two seeing each other, at least twice a week, for therapy, Damon finally gave in and started to see Taylor after therapy or they made dates to see one another. The two went through trials of doubt and mistrust, while at the same time falling hard for each other.

This is a lovely book about forgiveness, learning to trust after emotional injury and loving the person who had caused pain ten years prior. I highly recommend this sweet read. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Damon has hurtful secrets and so does Taylor. Both men knew each other in high school and Taylor was a super bully to Damon although they both hid their attraction for each other. Now ten years later at a high school reunion they run into each other and Taylor tries to apologize to Damon. Getting together after a bad accident the two men still can't trust anyone enough to tell all their secrets each other. Getting PT from Damon, Taylor and Damon see each other more and they gradually meet each other in the middle. Now Taylor has to decide whether to go or stay and Damon wants him to stay. Will their secrets get in the way of their relationship? Will the lines of communication break down before the two can make up to each other? A sweet, angsty short story that others are sure to enjoy. I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC book.

Not a good read!

The book started ok but I it just never got really into it. The characters were shallow and the end with the “misunderstanding” was just unbelievably bad.
Spoiler!!!When overhearing your lover stating “I don’t know if I want him” you are for sure hurt and expect an explanation at least. But nooo, he apologizes for standing up this douchebag the next day. And unbelievably the douchebag gets angry and expects an apology. WT...?
Can’t recommend it.

The author's writing is awesome in this story. The narrative is intoxicating for me. I fell right into this story and did not want to leave it. The characters were really decent. They were not flat. They were real like the people you meet in ordinary life. All in all it was a fun escape for me from reality.
I received this as an arc and left this review freely.
