Emergency physician Linh Davies is cursed with the ability to possess the soul of someone who dies when she’s touching them. Each new soul arrives with a story and a last wish. If she can grant their wish, they’ll move on and leave her be. But that isn’t always possible and her head is getting crowded...
Three weeks from taking a new job, Linh gets fourteen-year-old Elizabeth Bauer stuck in her head. Another voice is bad enough, but Linh is horrified to learn that the girl’s last wish is for her father to die. When Linh refuses, Elizabeth decides there’s only one way to get what she wants—to take over Linh’s body and kill her father herself. During the struggle that follows Linh is forced to decide what’s more important—her life and the lives of those around her or her oath as a physician to do no harm.
I totally enjoyed this book! Thanks to the author for a copy. The book had suspense and even a bit of a creep factor. This is the first book I have read by this author, and I will certainly read more!
When I first started this book, I wondered if it was gonna be one of those that I would struggle to get into it to or to finish. However, around the third chapter, I began to get invested and the story really held my attention from that moment on. The theme of this series reminds me of a TV show I used to watch in which the dead speak to a coroner and she fulfills their last wishes, but the premise here is a tad bit different and I found myself rushing through the chapters. Book two will for sure be on my TBR list!
It is an interesting concept, being possessed by the spirits of recently deceased patients. The one issue that I had with this book was that, as this is supposedly the first book in the series how is the protagonist already possessed by three spirits of the recently deceased (without the explanation that she was being possessed by these spirits) I had read First Wish previously so I understood that she was being posses.
Now for the nit-picking...lol ! There was one typo in chapter 35 (you're instead of your) , but it was nothing that ruined the book. All in all a good book an enjoyable story and easily worth a recommendation.
I just have to say what a wonderful book this is. A beautiful cover and a great story. Kept me hooked until the very end. No spoilers here you just have to read it for yourself. I actually won this book in a giveaway from M.D. Thomas and he was kind enough to sign it. Thank you for a great book.
Like many readers on Amazon in recent years I've become wary of free books. While it's a valid tactic to get people to try the book and leave a review, there are a lot of authors who are self-publishing without ever letting their work in front of an editor. This is generally a mistake. There may be the odd exception out there, but I've started reading too many that seemed like first drafts. It's annoying and frankly unfair to the reader.
So colour me wary. I liked the premise, though, and thought I'd give it a shot. I'm glad I did. This is that rare free book that rewards you for downloading it. It reads quickly and is well-paced, with a fun supernatural foundation that is strong enough to amuse and to scare.
I'll leave it here before I risk including any spoilers, but suffice to say that I will definitely be looking out for the next in the series when it arrives, and to recommend to anyone burned by the free book experience to give this one a try.
I received this book through the author in exchange of an honest review. I love mysteries, thrillers, medical dramas, paranormal, strong lead characters, and well developed plot lines. This story has it all! It's definitely a must read! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and am looking forward to more.
I went into reading this book blindly, not knowing at all what it was about. I love thrillers but paranormal is not my usual go to and I have to admit I’m pleasantly surprised. As a matter of fact there were many “firsts” for me, first time reading a book by this author, first time reading a book on my phone (I’m old school and love my paperbacks) and first time finishing a book so quickly. I honestly cannot wait to read the next book in this series.
This was a great premise for a book -- a woman possessed by the ghosts of the dead until she can fulfill their last wish. Unfortunately, the execution was rather uneven. I wanted to like it, and was even creeped out at points (the author's probable intent), but in the end I don't find myself enthused about continuing the series.
Linh Davies has a strange ability -- if she's touching someone when they die, their ghost lives inside her until she can grant their final wish. Not a great ability for someone who works as an ER doctor... but made worse by the voices of those whose final wish she's unable to grant. And things get even worse when the ghost of a teenage girl inhabits her mind... and the girl's final wish is for Linh to kill her father. And when Linh refuses, the girl makes it clear she'll take Linh's body by force to get her wish...
The premise for this book is deliciously creepy... but it's weirdly underutilized. We're told time and again that Linh has the voices of multiple people in her head, but aside from the newest addition they're awfully quiet most of the time. Still, the points where Linh loses control of her body are terrifying, and I found myself dreading every moment of possession and biting my nails to see what would happen next. So I guess it accomplished at least part of its mission...
Not helping matters are that the characterizations are fairly flat, especially for the ghosts. Linh dismisses this last part by explaining that death tends to reduce the dead to one or two character traits, but that doesn't excuse the rest of the cast. I still barely feel like I know Linh besides the fact that she crushes on a co-worker and has issues with her mother. And the father of Linh's latest ghostly passenger is an enigma -- the book seems to want to paint him as a sociopath without emotions, even when
This was a unique premise, but the book itself fell flat. I won't be continuing this series.
Linh Davies has the ability to possess the soul of anyone who dies while she is touching them. Not a good ability for an Emergency Room Doctor to have. She is trying to finish out her last 2 weeks of residency with just the 3 rather benign souls she has stuck in her head waiting for her to fulfill their last wish so they can move on. And then Elizabeth Bauer and her father come in, the victims of a bad car accident. I am not going to say anymore so as not to give anything away. I loved this book. The characters are all well developed and grow throughout the book good. Linh is strong and likeable. I was rooting for Connor, the hunk of an anesthesiologist who likes Linh. Dicky the attending's name fits him well, at least at first. Her mother Lanh, is great! I could picture her so well. The plot is fast moving with a few surprises. The style of writing is extremely readable. I look forward to reading the rest of this series.
This is a change from my usual genre and didn’t really know what to expect. The story starts with a clear indication that this is gone to be fast paced. I certainly did not expect what was going to happen, suspense in bucket loads. A very good cast of characters make the plot into a, who can help me, who can I trust. Even the parts of the book that involve the tube train and station are all very well explained and you can easily imagine what is happening, in fact, even see it through Elizabeth’s eyes. My first read from this author and definitely not my last. I will also state that I didn’t want to put it down as it was so good and exciting so I ended up reading late into the night. I received this book as part of ARC and decided to give a review.
Last Wish is a phenomenal beginning to a wildly unique paranormal thriller series. The Last Wish is an excellent introduction to a unique concept of the paranormal's impact on the everyday world and to Dr. Linh and the other characters that make this book and subsequent ones in the series very compelling. The storyline has thriller components and has mystery, intrigue, suspense, and action that manifests in a way that you will find in no other book. M.D. Thomas developed characters that are realistic and believable, and a story and character concepts that while unique, are also believable, realistic, and unpredictable. The next story in the series, Fool Wish, is very much anticipated!
I received a free copy of this book from the author and am leaving this review voluntarily.
One of the best debut novels I’ve read. This author has some serious talent, skill, and quite the imagination. The story is part medical thriller, part supernatural suspense and full on fast-paced entertainment. I would highly recommend for fans of Robin Cook (for the medical thriller aspect), Dean Koontz, and Jim Butcher (both of these for the more supernatural, fantasy, action thriller aspect). It reminded so much of many of their works, not because of the story being similar to any I’ve read of theirs, but just because I love those authors and I would have believed any one of them had written this book. I will definitely look forward to his next book!
I did receive an ARC copy, which my tablet bicycles away at 68% through, so I got a free copy. I really enjoyed the story, and the twists that really rolled in at the end. I took one star away for detail reasons. That being, I most enjoy books with lots of details. There were placed in the book that I found myself thinking of where more details would have helped, as well as some additional twists. Don't be afraid to spread those creative wings and build a bigger story.
I'm not quite sure how to classify this riveting, hard hitting novel. It's part psychodrama, part paranormal horror, part thriller and a story I won't soon forget. It tells the story of an Emergency Room doctor with the gift/curse of being able to communicate with those patients who die while she is touching them. When a 14 year old traffic accident victim is brought in to the ER, Linh little expects the changes she will bring about in the good doctor's life. This one's everything you want in a good ghost story, or hospital drama or edge of your seat thriller. I heartily recommend it.
It was a good book. I really enjoyed the characters, they were funny and entertaining. I did find the book a bit predictable, but the funny characters kept me reading on. I also liked the concept of the book. The doctor hearing her dead patients in her head until she helps them move on. I could see this being a good tv show.
This isn’t your average thriller. It was an amazing book that kept me on the edge of my seat. You won’t see the end coming and it’s unlike any other thriller I’ve read. So many of them are predictable it’s about time someone wrote a book that’s different!!
This is a great beginning to the series. Linh Davis is a likable character. I connected with her from the first page. This is the prequel to the the series. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I received an ARC for an objective review.
I found the story interesting and characters like able. Much of the story was very close to the life style of time for story. I do like books about England mid to late 1800’s.
It was a good story but I can't get over how it ended. I think the author should have taken a different angle but it is her story and maybe it was her intention that it should keep me thinking about it a couple days after reading.
