Smoke Gets in Your Eyes:
From her first day at Westwind Cremation & Burial, twenty-three-year-old Caitlin Doughty threw herself into her curious new profession. Coming face-to-face with the very thing we go to great lengths to avoid thinking about she started to wonder about the lives of those she cremated and the mourning families they left behind, and found herself confounded by people's erratic reactions to death.

Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs [Hardcover]:
Every day, funeral director Caitlin Doughty receives dozens of questions about death. In this book she offers factual, hilarious and candid answers to thirty-five of the most interesting questions posed by her youngest fans, sharing the lore and science of what happens to, and inside, our bodies after we die. Why do corpses groan? What causes bodies to turn strange colours during decomposition? and why do hair and nails appear longer after death? The answers are all within . . .

From Here to Eternity:
As a practising mortician, Caitlin Doughty has long been fascinated by our pervasive terror of dead bodies. In From Here to Eternity she sets out in search of cultures unburdened by such fears. With curiosity and morbid humour, Doughty introduces us to inspiring death-care innovators, participates in powerful death practices almost entirely unknown in the West and explores new spaces for mourning - including a futuristic glowing-Buddha columbarium in Japan, a candlelit Mexican cemetery, and America's only open-air pyre. In doing so she expands our sense of what it means to treat the dead with 'dignity' and reveals unexpected possibilities for our own death rituals.

I really enjoyed this book. Death is a topic most shy away from - but not Caitlin Doughty. This book forced me to look at death in a different light. It opened my eyes to the way we as a society stick to traditions that are somewhat ridiculous and trivial because of course, we want to send our loved ones off on a comfortable pillow with full makeup and in the most expensive casket we can (probably not) afford. Why do we do that again? Oh yeah, because it's what our parents did and their parents did, and so on. Written well and it's obvious the author did what authors are compelled to do - write what they know. A fascinating memoir and look behind death's curtain by a relatable narrator.

Pros :: An amazing read!! Found Caitlin via her YouTube channel and her book is so very much like her vids: educational, demystify and humorous. Congratulations to the author for making death a learning experience (who knows that even when you get cremated, not all of you can make it into the box. Something gets left behind, regardless.) This book is told with compassion, curiosity and I love that she majored in history and medieval times. Note: Read Smoke Gets In Ypur Eyes only.

Cons :: Nothing

I rented all three books of Caitlin Doughty, the popular utube creator of Ask a Mortician and started a non profit business called the Good Death. When I am reading the book I imagine Caitlin narrating her discussions of question about death from children. I love her utube channels and I like her insights to death and death rituals. I like that her funeral home is down the street in LA

I red book one “will my cat eat my eyeballs.” Loved it! Such a positive way and healthy talk about death and all the questions that come with it. This mortician author is informational while also being funny.
