Try to Love Me

Rate this book
He used to torment me. So why is he acting like I’m the one who got away?

I swore I’d never come back to Ireland, but when my grandfather fell ill, I traded backpacking through Bali for pulling pints in their pub in a small village outside of Dublin.

I expected shocked stares and gossip about where I’ve been. I didn’t expect him.

Rugby star Declan O’Shaughnessy was the boy who treated me like I was nothing. Now he’s everywhere I go, looking at me like I’m everything. And no matter how hard I push him away, he doesn’t back down.

I don’t do roots, and I definitely don’t fall for cocky athletes like him. But under all that swagger, Declan’s hiding a vulnerability that bulldozes past every wall I’ve built.

He says I don’t have to choose between freedom and love. That with him, I can have both. But letting him in means giving up control.

And the worst part? I kind of want to.

TRY TO LOVE ME is a high-heat, slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers rugby romance featuring a black cat heroine, a reformed playboy with a secret soft spot, delicious kink exploration, and a man who’s been in love from afar—until now.

I have a rule: if I get an urge to start skimming I just drop the book. From experience, it doesn't get better.

Unfortunately this book couldn't keep my attention. It was too slow paced and was lacking in anticipation and contained too many lengthy descriptions that I personally could have lived without...

I did like the characters, I just don't want to skim through boring parts to get to the good ones.

can't love them all! The hero is a yummy rugby player though so if you're into sports romances you should give it a try :) I'm not known for my patience lol

Well, I said after I read Break Down that I was going to rewind and catch up with the rest of the Dublin Rugby series, so what better way to brighten up a long boring train journey. And it mattered not one jot that I’d read the fourth book before getting up close and personal with Declan and Sophie.

description …this beautiful fucking piece of man flesh standing before me was my childhood nemesis Declan “The Turd” O’Shaughnessy?”

The reformed rake is one of my favourite tropes, especially when we have a stubborn lady to knock him on his arse. And whilst I wouldn’t say this is an easy journey for either Declan and Sophie—both have trust issues—it was an easy, engaging and very sexy read.

description …in that moment I knew no man would touch you again as long as I lived. You’re mine Sophie.”

Being told from the dual POV gives us a real chance to get to know these characters and highlights the difference in their memories of growing up and, despite letting her guard down and opening her heart, Sophie is resolute in her decision that her visit to Ireland will remain just that and at times frustratingly so. But what I really loved was being witness to Declan’s more vulnerable, softer side because Sophie grounds him, appreciates him for the man he is and not for his career, celebrity or bank balance.

description I wanted Sophie to be my safe place, like I wanted to be hers.”

At times the pacing felt like it needed winding-up to gather a bit more momentum, but overall this was a strong start to the series with lots of potential going forward. These characters are loveable as they are maddening and if you enjoy sports romances/Irishmen/rugby Trying Sophie is definitely worth checking out, plus it’s free on all platforms!

description Declan O’Shaughnessy is my personal catnip.”

Sophie is a travel writer, she has been to some amazing places around the world but one place that she has never forgotten about is Ireland. Her mother is Irish and when Sophie was a young girl, they moved there for a couple of years. The worst two years of her life. Why? Declan O'Shaughnessy.

You know how sometimes you get teased by a boy at school and people often say 'it's because he likes you.' Well that was a big fat lie. Declan seem to take great delight in teasing Sophie as much as he could. She can't even remember a single day over the two years she lived in Ireland where he didn't do something to annoy her.

Ten years later, Sophie has returned to help out her grandparents at their pub in Ballycurra. Her grandfather is poorly and they could do with the help. She is surprised to see a very gorgeous specimen of a man waiting for her at the airport when she arrives. She is even more surprised when she finds out he is Declan O'Shaughessy, her childhood nemesis!

Declan has changed a lot, apart from his all round hotness, he is now a successful international rugby player which gives him celebrity status and a lot of attention from eager women. He has a very close relationship with Sophie's grandparents, they have been his biggest supporters since he hit it big and his closest confidants too. Of course, all Sophie knows about him is how bloody mean he was to her!

A truce is found between Sophie and Declan, in fact they pretty much go to the complete opposite end of the enemy spectrum. The attraction between them is ridiculous and because Sophie has been around all the hype over his rugby career, he is just Declan to her. This is refreshing for him because in a world of fake people, Sophie is just the girl he has been looking for. Someone who likes him for who he is, who wants to really know him and wants to grow with him as he evolves into who he wants to be.

Sophie is a planner and likes to stick to time frames so reconnecting with Declan kind of messes up her plans, in a good way though. After all, she is sleeping with the hottest guy in the country and he only wants her.

This was a fun friends to lovers story. There was nothing too angsty, everything just flowed along nicely. No big surprises or twists. There was plenty of sexy times to keep me reading too!

On hold@ 44% -which basically means that I've stopped reading the book. I don't feel a connection with the characters and it is slow going peeps. Very few can do slow romance. I lost interest in the end. It is so ME and NOT the book.

I received 2 signs that lead me to read this book:
#1: My Goodreads friend Kate Phoenix had this book on her To Read shelf w/ the comment,
"Irish and rugby, can't pass that up" (me too! I love books about Ireland/Irish characters)
#2: The Irish National Rugby team recently beat NZ's All Blacks rugby team. (OMG!)

The Prologue starts off with 18 years in the past: The H, Declan and the h, Sophie are
8 years old. Sophie is an awkward shy, half American/half Irish little girl. Declan is her nemesis. He's the popular boy who can't resist teasing her at every opportunity-- Often in front of the other kids! Declan absolutely torments Sophie who has a secret crush on him.
Two years later, Sophie's mom & dad split up and Sophie's mother takes her back to the U.S.
Eighteen years later, Sophie's mom sends (badgers) her to Ireland to help her grandparents run their pub when her Grandpa develops heart problems. Sophie and Declan meet again -through her grandparents meddling. Declan is now a rugby star for Ireland. He's also been very close to Sophie's grandparents after Declan's own da had passed away when he was 18 years old. Sophie immediately tells Declan that she has had hard feelings about how he treated her. He tells her that he was only 8 years old but does tell her he's truly sorry. He confesses that it was a way to get her attention.
Sophie forgives him. There's still a lot of push/pull and each avoiding a committed relationship.
This is first person POV, alternating Sophie then Declan. I really enjoyed the author's writing. The plot was slow moving. Not a lot of action. Just a little bit of the rugby matches.
Sophie constantly reminds Declan that she's in Ireland for only the short term.
Declan isn't exactly an alpha male. He hasn't had too much experience with relationships.
There's frequent mention of Declan's manho ways-prior to meeting Sophie of course! There's no cheating. no (current) ow, om after they meet and are together.
IMO, Declan is sort of a whiner and a little immature for his age (26). He lets Sophie call the shots and never lets on how he feels. This went on for a while. There was THE BIG misunderstanding at about 75%- finally- some action/angst/conflict! Sophie found it easy to doubt Declan. Yep nope. Declan, gah man up! He eventually does-sort of...
Ironically, I liked Grandpa Colm & Grandma Maureen as my favorite secondary characters.
I liked the very end and the epilogue. (HEA) I will probably read the next book: Declan's younger sister Aoife (pronounced EE-fa) and Eoin (pronounced O-in). Yes, there's a glossary.
I received an ARC from the author. Thank you. 3.75 stars

This is my book, so of course I love it! Since I watched my first Irish rugby match during the 2015 Rugby World Cup, I knew I had to write a story about this sport. I hope you enjoy reading Declan and Sophie's story as much as I did writing it. Now if you'll excuse me, rugby season has started back up and I'm off to watch my local team.

SYNOPSIS:

She doesn't date players...

Sophie loves her life: she's traveled the world and lived by her own rules. But when she finds out about her grandfather's heart attack, she drops everything and boards a plane to Ireland. Two weeks, that's the plan. Until one look at her childhood nemesis has her rethinking everything. She's sworn off athletes, but she might just give him a try...

He's the biggest player of all.

Sex and rugby. Those were the only two things Declan cared about, right up until his first love waltzed back into his life. Even as he slept his way through Dublin, he never stopped thinking about her. Never stopped wondering if she thought about him, too. So even though he's never gone after a woman the way he chases down opponents on the field, this time, he won't let her get away.

On the field, he's invincible, but she just might break him.

My thoughts

I really enjoyed this story.
The characters were well-developed, and the writing and storyline were good.
One of my favorite storylines is when the two main characters have grown up together, something traumatic happens, and years later they come together and try to make things work.

What I really enjoyed about this story was seeing these traumatic incidences through the characters POV and the motives behind them.
When Sophie finally sees everything that Declan did to her from his POV, she realizes he never meant to hurt her but lashed out when she didn't respond to him because she was so wary of him.

As adults, Sophie and Declan's biggest obstacle is learning to trust and forgive one another.
Their journey is difficult but in the end, well worth it.

EXCERPT

"I dropped my eyes and stared at the floor. “I want you, Declan. Really, I do, but I’m worried about being just another notch on your bedpost.”
Pushing off the window, he crossed the room in three purposeful strides. Wrapping his large hands around my arms, he squeezed them gently. I raised my eyes to his.
“How can I make you see that’s not true?”
“I don’t know. Maybe you can’t.”
When I looked away he groaned and loosened his grip. Trying a different tactic, he asked, “What are you most afraid of?”
Man up Sophie, I thought to myself. If you’re not brave enough to have The Talk, you’re not mature enough to have The Sex.
I couldn’t help how I felt and if we didn’t get this out in the open, it might always be between us. And despite this being a difficult conversation, it was more important to tell him how I felt than to keep it bottled up inside and resent him in the future because I hadn’t been honest with him from the get go.
I took a deep breath and squared my shoulders. “The thing I’m most afraid of is you’re going to be with me today, then turn around and fuck someone else three days from now. I’m worried that if we do this, it’s not going to mean the same thing to you that it’ll mean to me.”
He closed his eyes and exhaled loudly as he pinched his fingers around the bridge of his nose. When he opened them, he dropped his hand and leveled an indecipherable gaze on me.
“How can you think that?”
“I know it’s not fair of me to judge you for your past, but you don’t exactly have a solid track record here. Tell me I’m wrong. Convince me that when we walk out of here you’re not going to think, ‘That Sophie, she was one hell of a lay. Who’s next?’”
“Is that really what you think of me?” he asked somberly.
“That’s what I was talking about earlier,” I answered sadly. “I don’t really know you, do I? What if you forget about me tomorrow?”
“That won’t happen.”
I continued as if he hadn’t spoken because if I didn’t, I’d never say what needed to be said.
“I know I’m leaving soon and less than an hour ago I told you we should just enjoy each other while we had the chance, but I think I’ve been fooling myself. I can’t be casual with you, Declan. If we’re going to be together, it has to be more than just sex.”
My eyes dropped to the patterned rug at our feet and I held my breath, waiting for him to laugh, scoff, or otherwise indicate I was being completely unrealistic with my expectations. Which is why I was taken by surprise when he lifted my chin with his finger and, staring into my eyes, chased away all my doubt and fear.
“Done,” he promised, finality in that one word. “And just so you know, there was never any question that’s what this would be. I’ve thought about this for so long, wanted you as much as I’ve ever wanted anything. I have no intention of screwing up one of the best things that’s ever happened to me.”
He rubbed his rough, calloused thumb across my cheek. Dropping his eyes, he cradled my face in his hands and watched his fingers stroke along the apples of my cheeks. Finally, his eyes landed back on mine. “Do you have any idea what you do to me?”
I shook my head because I couldn’t seem to find my voice.
“You ruin me.” He dropped a soft kiss on my lips. “Just completely destroy me,” he added, taking the kiss deeper.
“Let me show you Sophie,” he whispered, his gaze locked on mine. “I promise it’ll be good. I’ll be so good to you.”
I nodded and he licked the seam of my lips. Opening to him, felt the tangle of his tongue against my own, the taste of him imprinted forever on my memory.
“Yes,” I whispered and kissed him back, hungrily.
He scooped me into his arms and carried me to the bed."

This is the first book I've ever read by Rebecca Norinne, and I absolutely loved it. I'm a big fan of sports romance so when I saw a book about an Irish rugby player, I knew I had to read it. It also helps that I'm strangely drawn to the name Declan. I have no idea why. haha! I've had a serious case of wanderlust lately and this book really helped me satisfy that (or made it even worse! haha) with the way that the author goes into descriptive detail about the scenery, culture, and accents.

In the prologue, we meet Sophie as a shy young American girl trying to fit in in Ireland. Declan was a bit of a jerk when they were kids and bullied her relentlessly, which Sophie took to heart because she had a crush on him. So when they meet again later on in life Sophie tries to keep her distance, but Declan makes it really hard with his charm and good looks.

I REALLY loved both of these characters so much! One of my favorite things about this one was that Declan really has to work hard to earn Sophie's trust again. She's not one of those heroines that swoon as soon as they see an attractive athlete. In fact, it was actually the male MC that was falling hard while the female MC was the one unwilling to commit, and that was really refreshing.

When these two get together the chemistry is off the charts. There are some really sizzling scenes between the two of them, but I would say it's a slow burn to start with. This book was a little longer than I expected, but it is so worth it. An the ending left a huge smile on my face. I will definitely be keeping a lookout for more books by Rebecca Norinne in the future.

** I received an ARC of this title in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. **

This is a ME NOT YOU review!

This sounds so good!!
And it is in POV!! whoop whoop!! Can you tell I'm exited? :D

As you can tell I was very exited to start this one it had everything I wanted!

But

With this one I've come to realize I'm ruined for other authors..
Because with everything I thought Oh that's like with that book, that's like that one..

The blurb spoke to me and I set my expectations to high..

I will not get into it to much, because this is a me not you issue.
There are lot's of awesome reviews and great ratings, but it just wasn't for me.

I had the great honor of reading Trying Sophie by Rebecca Norrine and immediately fell in love not only with the characters and setting, but Norrine's writing. The book is sweet, funny, and sexy - not an easy combination to pull off. Trying Sophie is a fantastic first book in a Dublin Rugby series and I'm genuinely looking forward to reading the rest!

From the moment I read the synopsis for this book it started to weave its magical spell over me. With its delicious Irish hero and its strong-willed heroine theirs is a romance that crackled from the moment they were children to the eroticism of adulthood as they morphed from childhood enemies to adult friends to lovers. Theirs is a romance that had moments of fun and flirtation but had surprising heart and soul that kept me fully immersed in their HEA from the first page to the last.

The moment Declan met Sophie he knew she'd always be special to him. As a little boy though those feelings scared him and had him hurting her through words and deeds that remain with her today. After Sophie left Ireland his life went through dramatic changes that led to success and acclaim on the rugby field along with a smorgasbord of nameless and faceless women. Along with after-game pains that take longer to heal, his meaningless interactions with women are weighing him down too. He's tired of being a commodity, tired of living a life that feels empty, and decides to do something about it with the help of Sophie's cantankerous grandfather. Reuniting with her leads to introspective moments of self-discovery, heartfelt talks, and lots of erotic encounters that brought out a sweet and playful yet animalistic side that had me drooling over him. Through it all Declan had many qualities that I love in my heroes...he makes no excuses for his past indiscretions, he's honest about the kind of man he is, and truly wants to be a better one. He's loyal to his family, takes pride in his small town, and is truly grateful for all that fame has given him which all adds up to a hero who gives me lots of good dreams.

Sophie's childhood was one of lies, hurtful words, and being made to feel unworthy. Her parent's divorce brought out the worst in her mother while her father's ignoring her has left her doubtful of all men. Those feelings were reinforced by Declan's taunts and still linger today as she doubts his ability to commit to her when bombarded by temptations. Though she forgives him for his childhood actions she can't forget which makes her quick to judge and quick to doubt the HEA he and Ballycurra represent if she's willing to put her heart on the line one last time. Sophie's a strong-willed heroine who's made a nice life for herself as her travel blog has taken her around the world. She speaks her mind and stands up for what she wants when it comes to a relationship with Declan. Her biggest flaw is assuming the worst which led to some rocky moments late in the story which frustrated and disappointed me as Declan did nothing to warrant her doubts. Despite that I liked them together as they made each other better, a formidable pairing that kept me fully immersed in their life-long romance.

From start to finish this story wove a heartwarming narrative of the price of fame, a tale that endeared me to this couple as readers got to see their love for each other grow. Words and deeds matter and for Declan and Sophie they have a lot to overcome in finding HEA, inner turmoil along with outside obligations fuel their ups and downs and kept my heart on edge. Along with this unforgettable main couple came a delightful cast of secondary characters. From Sophie's grandparents who are the catalyst for her coming home and setting her on her path to HEA to Declan's rugby teammates who are enjoying their fame wholeheartedly, these are characters that brought a smile to my face. The character to leave the biggest impression is the emotionally bruised Cian whose dreams of rugby fame were dashed. He's left hollow and bitter, just as much of a player as Declan but doesn't see himself as a bad guy unlike how he views Declan. Cian loves his friend but is resentful for all he's gotten which leads to him hurting Sophie early on but gaining a surprising friend later on. His is a heartbreaking tale that I long to see play out as, despite his anger and tendency to lash out, he deserves a HEA for all he's lost. Fans of sports romances will enjoy the brief interludes of play that are riveting, fast-paced, and exhilarating in their ability to make you feel part of the action. It doesn't dominate the story though and won't alienate those who steer clear of these kinds of romances. The romance itself is extremely well-done by letting their connection evolve slowly, too slowly at times unfortunately, which ultimately made it more realistic and meaningful. From the first page to the last I found this a decadently delightful start to a series whose drool-worthy heroes have me counting down the days until we revisit this quaint and exotic side of Ireland.

4.75 STARS!

My Thoughts

Trying Sophie is the first book in the adult contemporary sports romance, Dubline Rugby series by author Rebecca Norinne. I have never read any of Rebecca's books, but I can't pass up a book set in Dublin with Rugby players. One of my favorite sports romance series of all time features a rugby team (by L.H. Cosway & Penny Reid) so I couldn't pass up the first book in a new rugby romance series. And I am super glad that I read Trying Sophie. This was a spicy and sweet sports romance that gave me all the feels and made me super happy while reading it.

Trying Sophie is told in dual narrative between Sophie and Declan's points of view. I loved this aspect of the story. I think it works extremely well in a contemporary romance because it gives you the opportunity to really get to know each character. I love seeing Declan's motivations, backstory and feelings. I loved seeing Sophie's too but I feel sometimes I like seeing the guys point of view even more than the woman's. This is one of those times. Declan and Sophie knew each other as kids, during that pick on the the girl you like phase. Let's just say that Declan's antics impacted Sophie and not in a good way, so when they meet up again as adults, eve though their attraction and chemistry is pretty immediately apparent, another kind of sparks fly. I loved their whole back and forth. Heck, just loved them!

Not only was the romance in Trying Sophie great, but the whole cast of characters were delightful. I loved Sophie's grandparents and I really loved Declan's team mates. I can't wait to read the next books in the series. I can't wait to see all of the teammates stories.

Bottom line: If you are a Rugby fan, or a fan of Penny Reid's rugby series, you will really enjoyed the Dublin Rugby romances. I loved Trying Sophie and it has made me very excited to continue on in the series. Trying Sophie has a romance that is both sweet and spicy, with lots of heart and delightful moments, plus you will fall in love with the whole cast of characters. Trying Sophie was a big win for me.

Sophie Newport didn't have the easiest childhoods, especially when her father left her mother for a younger model, which brought out the gossip in spades. When she's shipped off to her Grandparents in Ireland, she's a shy girl, and it doesn't help there's a boy who is intent on making her life hell, and succeeds. Now years later, she loves how her life turned out, she's traveling the world and living by her own rules. When she learns of her grandfather having a heart attack, she drops everything to go back to Ireland to help them out for two weeks. But her plans go awry when her childhood nemesis picks her up at the airport, and boy has he changed into something sexy. Declan O'Shaughnessy lives and breathes rugby, and it's what made him one of the best around, but his other extracurricular activities included sleeping with as many women as possible, until the one woman who got away, comes back into his life. He never stopped thinking about her, so after she gets Sophie to forgive his childhood meanness, he decides he is finally going to make her his. There's just one problem, Sophie plans to leave as soon as she gets her Grandparents sorted out, so with the determination he displays on the rugby field, will he be able to chase her down, in order to convince her to stay and give them a real chance?

What a great story that I didn't expect to love quite as much as I did, being the NFL football girl that I am. But believe me, I still laughed hard at the insults about the american boys wearing pads. Not to mention, I learned all kinds of new lingo, and insults that I will be bringing into my everyday life. The character development is fantastic, with a highly colorful cast of secondaries that I'm super excited to hear more from. I loved how Sophie and Declan evolved so realistically, showing the cracks of change so well as they went on their journey. Plus, their simmering chemistry threatened to burn me from all the steam, which FINALLY boiled over into SIZZLIN' HOT, panty destroying sexy scene goodness that almost overheated my kindle. This is my first book by Rebecca Norinne, and her super talented writing style has me addicted, so I really can't wait to read more by her immediately, and not just in this new series. The witty banter had me laughing until my sides hurt, and the emotional pain they went through, came out of my kindle to choke me physically, as I felt it like my own. A couple of twists and turns had the f-bomb dropping parade doing a lap or two, but the ending made up for all of it! CANNOT WAIT TO READ more of this amazing series, so here's my HIGH HIGH HIGH RECOMMENDATION, READ THIS BOOK ASAP!

A friend, Alexis (you know who you are 😁), recommended I start with Trying Sophie and I am so glad I did. I absolutely loved Declan and Sophie....I loved how their relationship started at a young age, because honestly, who hasn’t had that one person in their childhood who was mean?????

I then became invested in their adult relationship.....and HOLY HOTNESS!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 that connection was off the charts!!!!! Sophie’s past had such an impact on her adult life that it held her back from so much. Declan’s past was nothing to shy away from, it was dark....but in such a good way (insert eye wink) 😉.

The epilogue.....oh how I loved it!!!! It was absolute perfection!!!!

As a blogger and reader, I’ve been able to connect with numerous authors on social media and at signings. Being able to read one of their books and loving it.....a HUGE plus!!! Ms. Norinne is on my bucket list to meet.....and if you follow my reviews, you’ve heard mention of my BBF harem....well Declan is now a proud member of that group!

My rating: 10 HOT flames!

This is my first book from this author, but it wont be my last. We meet Sophie who fights her attraction to her childhood nemesis, Declan, who used to bully and torment her when they were children. Declan always had a crush on her, and she never knew, how could she, with the stuff he pulled. There is some back and forth snark, that you will enjoy, and things start to finally build up with help from the grandparents, who always know best. Their chemistry is combustible, can't wait for next book.

5* review by Nicole McC @EBR------>
Ever since I heard the lovely and talented author Rebecca Norrine was writing a Rugby romance, I practically stalked her social media account waiting for a release date. I'll put my hands up and admit, I was a little worried, after having spent weeks hyping myself up for this book, on the off-chance that it wouldn't live up to my high sports-romance addicted expectations.
I really needn't have fretted because Rebecca employed her sterling writing and story-telling capabilities and utilised them and her extensive knowledge of rugby to the fullest, delivering one of the best sports-romance books I've had the pleasure of reading ever, and probably the best EVER sports related book set in the UK or Ireland.
This book has everything you could possibly want in a terrific read. It starts in the past, where our young bespectacled heroine Sophie is not only dealing with huge changes geographically, having moved from America to Dublin; upheaval in her home life, dealing with spiteful rumours and gossip but she is also suffering emotionally at the hands of ruthless bully boy rugby player Declan. Rebecca sets the scene wonderfully in these first few chapters, so that it is in perfect sync to the future. It gives the reader insight into how our actions, reactions and words can have repercussions in the future, not only on the person doing and saying the hurtful things but most certainly on the person that they are aimed at. It also indicates that everything is not always so clear cut and black and white, there are hidden layers to people, secrets they don't want revealed and walls they construct in order to hide them from view.
The story really gains momentum when grown up Sophie and Declan are pushed together and sparks fly, sexually and in personality. The shared unkind memories, the hurt between them, seeking and clinging to forgiveness like a life raft and ultimately finding a way to make amends and seek redemption as well as traverse a sea of public scrutiny, troublemakers, drama and the rigours of rugby and all it entails.
'"Don't cry baby," he uttered quietly, moving in for a soft, worshipful kiss that lasted several long seconds. Eventually pulling back, his eyes caught mine and his lips raised in a shy, joyful smile. "I love you too Soph. I'm less than half a man when I'm not with you."
Rebecca has given us two phenomenal characters. Multi-faceted, intelligent, complex, interesting and downright sexy. It takes a strong, independent and big-hearted woman to see eye to eye with someone with a personality as big as Declan's and Sophie is the protagonist for the job. Declan too will snag your heart, if not from the start, then definitely when you get to the soul of the man, how he thinks and those sweet words he says and feels. Trying Sophie is a beautiful book, it is a slow burn and it is quite long (think along the lines of Mariana Zapata) but it is so worth the read. It's sweepingly romantic, the characters are intricate and engaging, the sport is perfect and we get a gorgeous happy ever after in the form of my favourite epilogue ever.

4.5 stars - Sports romance with a sexy rugby star and a travel writer with an attraction despite being childhood enemies

Trying Sophie was my first read by Rebecca Norinne but it most definitely won’t be my last one. I loved this childhood enemies turned instant attraction as adults sports romance between two really likeable characters, one a sexy rugby star, the other a travel writer still looking for her place in the world to truly call home. The characters and overall plot were unique and will keep you riveted and reading right to the very end.

Declan and Sophie, who alternate points of view to tell the story, have a clear instant attraction and incredible chemistry between them when they meet again as adults, despite their issues from their childhood (which take on a new perspective when looking back as adults). Their connection clearly evolves as the book progresses, but in a slow and steady way that is perfect for them, allowing for the relationship between the two characters to be developed without feeling rushed. What I personally really liked is that the characters were in no way just stereotypical, especially Declan being a Rugby star; yes, he has some traits but there is more to his character than just that side of him. Throughout the books, both characters clearly evolve and go through a range of emotions that are captured perfectly, ranging from happiness to heartbreakingly painful to love. Also, I really liked Sophie’s grandparents and the role they playing in not only the story but in developing both characters further (plus there were some laugh out loud  cringeworthy comments at times).

Trying Sophie is a very well written book with a great flow and strong plot. The book had some angst and drama mixed in with the romance while the storyline had enough twists to remain strong from start to finish to keep you flicking pages to find out how things will work out. The sexual content within is well written but does not take over the plot in anyway and comes into play at a good time in the book rather than feeling rushed. Also, despite this book incorporating a sports theme don’t be put off if you aren’t into sports because the book is so much more than that and very easy to follow along (with enough sport included to satisfy any sports fans). There is a sweet HEA epilogue, a good distance into the future, allowing for this book to truly be read as a standalone.

I would most definitely recommend this book! I was hooked and you will too, especially if you enjoy a good sports romance.

*I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. I was not compensated for my review, and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed here is my own.

Put together the words rugby and Irish men and you get a lethal mix for your eyes, as you’re reading about them, and your heart. They have become part of my personal list of favorite “book boyfriend”. Love might be in the air, as they say, but the hotness is for sure on rugby playing fields. It must be something they breathe in the grass while they’re rolling on it growing up …

Declan was one of the worst nightmares of Sophie’s childhood, with his relentless taunts and teasing, from which Sophie happily escaped after leaving Ireland with her mother. They were really only children at the time and you can’t say that with time they haven’t done their experiences: Sophie going on around the world writing her articles and Declan becoming one of the best rugby players of Ireland, without neglecting his popularity among women. They all dream and they all want him.

The temporary return of Sophie in Ireland puts them back facing each other, giving the opportunity for Declan to see the only person who actually has never stopped thinking.

I didn’t know Rebecca Norinne as authour but I love how she writes. This story is full of so many things I like: passion and tenderness, there are really hot sex scenes and so much sweetness in other moments.

Declan is an amazing character, he reflects all these things, but what struck me most was that despite his awareness of being so hot, however, with Sophie he shows all of his vulnerability, his fear of not being able to make her happy . And then I loved his ability to get to know the real Sophie from distance, reading through the lines of her articles and her adventures, learning to know her over the years, it seemed very romantic.

Actually the only one who have blind faith in him is Sophie’s grandfather, for Declan he was a real reference, a man with whom he established deep bond of affection.

Even Cian, Declan’s closest friend shows no trust about relationship is developing between Declan and Sophie, but perhaps Cian is not very unselfish on this topic.

Sophie isn’t helpless or naive, she’s smart, sassy and very blunt when it comes to say what she thinks, but she can’t stop her feelings for Declan, even with her fear of being only one of many girls of his list of conquests.

Their story is exciting and engaging, made even more beautiful by the various secondary characters we find in the: Sophie and Declan’s friends, his teammates, and their families.

This is only the first book of the Dublin Rugby series, we will know more about these people have already encountered, with their Owen books and I can’t wait to read them!

This is the first book that I have read by this author and I wasn't disappointed.

Declan is a pro Rugby player, a player with the ladies too. He is respected and loved for his talents on the pitch. He has earned the nickname of "The Machine" for his other talents! He is single and doesn't date. Wam bam, thank you ma'am is more his style.

Sophie is a renowned travel blogger. She lives in the US and has strong family ties in Ireland, her mother being Irish. She left Ireland when she was eight years old and has only stopped in passing to see her grandparents. Eighteen years later and she is back to help her grandparents due to her grandad's recent health scare.

The story sets off very nicely as soon as Sophie lands at the airport. She is impressed by her escort and oggles him openly, that is until he introduces himself. Declan! Her childhood nemesis. Oh dear! The bad memories come flooding back but all her preparations in case she ever meets him again goes out the window. Declan is hoping that she wouldn't remember but he is not so lucky. They come to a tentative agreement of being friends. Forgive and forget? More like forgive but not forget!

It's interesting to find out why Declan behaved the way he did when they were children. He hasn't changed much either, it's how he copes when not in control and nervous. Sophie is now quite confident and as determined as she is, she can't seem to ignore her attraction to him. As for Declan, he has been smitten forever. The chemistry between them is off the charts and the sex is sizzling hot. The fact that Sophie's visit has to come to an end is never far off their minds. They start trusting each other and start to open up about the past, then everything is turned upside down, just like that. The green eyed monster rears its ugly head, intent on causing trouble between them. That's gossips and jealousy for you! Fame comes with its own problems. Is this the end?

Declan is not experienced in dealing with relationships and being at a loss, he goes on the bender. This could prove to be costly. Sophie's trust issue gets in the way of seeing reasons. Emotions run high.

It's a captivating and intriguing storyline. There are disagreements, resentments, trust issues, humour as well as love and passion. Although contradictory in places, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel.

I received a complimentary eARC. All views expressed are my personal opinion.

I could not put this book down! I had not previously read any books by Rebecca Norinne but I love reading new authors and discovering their works. The way the author wrote this had me anxious to get to the end, just so I could see what happened with all the characters. Declan and Sophie being the main ones, but there were a lot of supporting cast that I want to read more about as well. I absolutely can’t wait until the future books of this series come out. I plan to snatch them up as soon as they are released.

Declan and Sophie knew each other when they were younger, and I love reading books where the main characters get to reconnect with each other because no matter what, there will probably be drama involved. Especially in a way such as this author did; based on their history together it is to be expected that Sophie would not want anything to do with Declan.. and boy does she let him know it. It always amuses me to read a story where the female lead doesn’t give in to the male’s wants and wishes right away – make him work for it! Okay, so maybe I am little biased towards siding with women but one of my favorite types of character is a confident, independent woman who doesn’t just fall into the lap of whatever man gives her the come-hither stare. And the fact that Declan was willing to try for Sophie raises my opinion of him immensely. He’s a playboy who has never had a relationship before but actively pursues the woman of his dreams? I’m swooning over here.

This book had me so ecstatic for Sophie and Declan and then I flipped a page and I wanted to shake Sophie for her stubbornness and stupidity. Her character has trust issues (I won’t spoil but let’s just say they are for good reasons) but at the first sign of trouble she throws her walls up so fast I honestly didn’t think the book would end happily and I felt bad for the hurt she was causing both of them to go through. The author knows how to keep her readers interested, that’s for sure. There was drama, there was action, there was romance and there was sex (hot hot steamy sex at that) but they all worked together for a perfect balance. Now I just have to have patience (a virtue I’m sorely lacking, by the way) and wait for the next book to come out.

Rugby star meets Travel writer whom he bullied in childhood!
What a cute and compelling romance!
In the prologue we meet young Sophie, who has come to Ireland to live with her grandparents. She is hoping o make new friends especially with the cute boy(Declan)she just saw.Except he insults her in front of the whole class! It all goes downhill from there with Declan bullying her at every turn and Sophie giving it back to him. After sometime she goes back to the US with her mom and is happy to do so.

Now, many years have passed and she has come back to help out in her grandparents' pub as her grandfather had a heartattack.Declan and Sophie meet each other at the airport and sparks fly from the very first meeting!Declan is highly attracted to this grown up, confident and intelligent woman. But how does he make her understand that his childhood behavior was a self-defense mechanism as he ha actually like her! Will she trust him and let him in?

Sophie forgives Declan early on itself, but she doesn't give in and go into a relationship with him immediately.Declan is quite the womanizer and is used to woman falling all over him. But, he is looking for something different. Will it be Sophie?
I loved how they took it slow and Sophie made him work for it.The chemistry between them was splendid!
Sophie's grandparents were really great additions and gave emotional support to story and brought in humor. One can understand why Sophie finds it difficult to trust as her childhood wasn't easy. Her mom was quite irritating!
It was beautiful to read Declan and Sophie's journey from the beginning to their HEA!Sweet romance with a little drama!
I'm only giving this 3.5 stars as even though it was a great book, there wasn't much that set it apart from other romance books. It wasn't really unputdownable or anything.
But. its still a really great rugby romance that you must try, if you're in the mood for a light and steamy sports romance for the weekend!

Oh my Declan and Sophie. This duo!!! They were sooooo freaking hot and enticing! I was completely consumed by their book, Trying Sophie. It's definitely a must read.

These two have known one another since they were eight. But they weren't childhood buddies... in fact Sophie hated Declan because he was such a little stinker to her. What she didn't understand at the time was that he was crushing on her and the only way she acknowledged him was when he provoked her.

Flash forward to years later, they're bought back together and once again Declan finds himself trying to win Sophie's attention and affection. I cannot even tell you have much fun it is to read about his courting her. Because they have the most incredible chemistry and the more she fights their budding relationship, the harder he tries to win her heart.

Get ready to lose your panties and your heart! I seriously loved everything about this romance. Declan and Sophie's conversations are filled with quick wit and banter. Their bedroom scenes are passionate and erotic.

They have several predicable hurdles to overcome but I enjoyed the ride. It was fun and entertaining romance that I adored - plus it left me wanting more from this new series. I can't wait to get to know the other players on Declan's team!!

Don't miss Declan and Sophie's love story - it's awesome and you'll be glad you experienced it!

Trying Sophie was a fun, emotionally charged read.

Declan and Sophie had known each other briefly when they were younger. Declan made sure to make Sophie’s life a living hell while she was in Ireland and although years have passed, Sophie has never forgotten that boy who made her childhood the worst.

Years later, Declan is a famous Rugby star and Sophie travels the world and has a popular blog. Both of them have their own career’s and their own fame and fortune. Both of them have their own perfect little lives, but little do they know what life has in-store.

Sophie returns back to Ireland to help her grandparents and guess who’s picking her up at the airport? Declan. Declan and all of his sexiness, which Sophie tries her hardest to ignore and bury deep down. But that ain’t happening with egotistically Rugby player. The sweet guy with the charming smile, down to earth personality despite his fame, knows what he wants and he will not stop until Sophie is his.

Trying Sophie was all kinds of sweetness. This book had a little bit of everything; family, friends and of course love. All sorts of drama pooled in from all sides, but not for no reason. Feelings got hurt, miscommunication and trusting issues were the least of what these characters went through, and came out stronger. It was a realistic captivating read.

I received a complimentary ARC. I chose to write a review based on my own opinion.

Shipped off to Ireland because her parents were divorcing, she spent two years of her life being tortured by Declan. She often thought of what she would say to him if she ever saw him again. Now after 18 years she finally has her chance.
Loving the beauty that was Sophie at the young age of 8 years old, was something that Declan should handle. He didn't know the burning in his heart and churning in his stomach was from the affect she had on him. So what did the little boy do to get the girls attention? Yeah, you know how boys are.
Now faced with the beauty that he has loved for over 18 years, will she forgive the child he was?
Perfection, this book is simply the best kind of romance their is. A child finally getting the chance to love the girl he has crushed on. Showing her how much she truly means and meant to him. Proving that he is worthy of her heart.
For Sophie, falling for her childhood torturer was not something he was anticipating or wanted. She was closed off having been burned, hurt and left behind by the men in her life. A refreshing love story that take you back to your childhood, you know that one kid that used to pull your hair, that crush that you had and bullied you, could you he be the love of you life?
I loved it every single syllable and words that Rebecca writes in this amazing story!

Wow, this book totally blew me away! I devoured it in one sitting, I was hooked from the first page. I loved Declan and Sophie, Declan is a pro rugby player and a total man whore! He doesn't do commitment or do overs, he's not called the machine for nothing. Sophie is a travel blogger, living the dream but family ties bring her back to Ireland. Declan and Sophie first meet as children and Declan is a total arse to her, she's never forgotten ( or forgiven him) Declan has been in love with her for years and is hoping to start a relationship with her. The chemistry between them is off the charts and literally scorches the pages, the sex scenes are sizzling hot! Can they get their happy ever after? you will have to read to find out! I can't recommend this book highly enough, it's not just another sports romance, it's more than that. An amazing read that's packed full of highs, lows, disagreements but a lot of humour too. If you only read one book this year, please make it this one! I seriously can't wait to read the next book in this series.

This book was oh so good. I absolutely fell in love with Declan and Sophie. The trials and tribulations that they both endured for the sake of love. I already knew this book was going to be amazing because Rebecca is one talented writer. I'm so excited that we will be getting more sexy rugby stories.

Sophie grew up in the US after enduring torture everyday at the hands of Declan O'Shaughnessy. Her father's family owns a professional basketball team. She knows the ins and outs of how much of a player these guys really are. So when her grandfather has a heart attack, the last thing she wants is to see the sexy Declan.

Declan is the best rugby player in Ireland. He is the ultimate Playboy. No woman more than once. Never personal or intimate. When he is sent to pick up Sophie from the airport, he is not prepared for what she will do to him.

Watching these two fight each other while falling in love was just an amazing thing. They resisted as much as possible but no one can fight matters of the heart. They are doomed to fall. It worked out so perfectly in the end. I absolutely loved this story.
