On Deck is the prequel to Caught Looking, Book Four in the Cessna U Wildcat Series and does not end in an HEA. Look for the exciting conclusion in the sequel Caught Looking.
Will good girl Cassie break the rules to be with the guy from the wrong side of the tracks?
There are two types of people in Bellow Bay. The rich. And me, Dalton Boyd. But my baseball scholarship is my one-way ticket out of this town and away from judgmental eyes. Nothing stands in my way.
That is, until a pretty blonde with the brightest blue eyes breezes into town and tilts my world. Cassie Green comes with one simple rule. Don’t fall in love.
One summer is all we have. And trust me, a summer fling isn’t a problem. But there’s one small glitch in our plan. I’ve never been one to follow the rules. And being with Cassie is no exception. Only this time, it may be me wishing I’d stuck to the plan.
Kimberly Readnour lives in the Midwest with her husband and a very snuggly cat.
Having a true passion for romance and HEAs, she took the leap from the young adult genre to romance and never looked back.
Unexpected Love, book two of the Unforeseen Destiny Series, is a #1 Amazon Kindle bestseller in the Medical Romance. Her series, the Bad Boys Redemption, has spent many weeks on Amazon's sports fiction bestseller list.
Kimberly worked as a Registered Nurse for fifteen years before hanging up her stethoscope. When she isn't running her own business, you can find her tucked away writing.
I am so happy Kimberly wrote this novella. It was originally written before the 4th book, but Kimberly recommended reading it either before or after book 1, since Dalton is introduced in book 1.
I decided to read it after and I'm so happy it did as it gave more insight to his character. In Swinging Strike, Dalton comes off as stand offish and a bit of a bad boy.
In this novella, we learn that he's had a difficult upbringing, which explains his attitude and personality in book 1. But what we learn, is that the summer before, he met an out-of-towner who he had a summer romance with. During the summer, Dalton fell fast and hard for Cassie.
Cassie grew up in a very strict and religious family. She's visiting her cousin and Aunt for the summer when she runs into Dalton. Cassie is immediately taken by him. She agrees to spend time with him but has one rule: no falling in love.
Their fling is passionate and all-consuming but inevitably comes to an end.
This novella literally made my heart bleed for Dalton. He is such a misunderstood character and I can't wait to read his story in book 4.
Trigger Warnings: Abuse, alcholism, abandonment, drug abuse, attempted shooting/robbery
This was a short and fun steamy yet emotional story about two people who dare to fall in love outside social circles requirements.
Dalton comes from the poor line, while Cass comes from a privileged one. Eyes meet and sparks fire. Soon they spend time together while battling demons and keeping to the just friends label.
Soon it turns to more and then it’s all left on on a cliffhanger. The full story of Dalton and Cass - Caught Looking - comes out in April 27 2022. And I’m so damn excited.
I mean the writing was just excellent, steam burning, emotions feeling me deep under, and the development oh my couldn’t stop putting in myself within em.
Oh my! What a teaser of a novella. I REALLY need Dalton’s story now! Cassie and Dalton leave you breathless and anxious for more. Their summer together leaves us in complete darkness. How will they conclude their story? I cannot wait for more!
Wait, what! I don’t know if I can wait for their book!! I need Dalton’s story like yesterday. I can’t wait to see how Kimberly brings their story around. So need this book now! This has just added to this amazing series!
Shoot, I shouldn’t have read this so soon. There’s still a whole ‘nother book between now and when Dalton and Cassie’s come out AND there isn’t even really a set release date for either. Oof, I’m already in such a book hangover
Is love fate or is love what you make of it. This is the question that Dalton is left with when Cassie comes into his hometown for one summer. Just a few moments together will change everything he had dreamed of. His life course is altered all because of the love of a girl he should never have touched. Emotional and heartbreaking. I now understand why Dalton has been the way he has been throughout the series. I only hope someday he will get his HEA.
“If we’re meant to be together, our lives will cross.”
On Deck is the prequel for Caught Looking and shows us the summer that Dalton and Cassie meet. Dalton is the boy from the wrong side of tracks. He’s just graduated high school and is counting the days until he can escape and start making his dream of being a professional baseball player a reality. When he spies Cassie on the beach, he is instantly drawn to her. Cassie returns his feelings, but she’s hiding her true identity from him. The more time they spend together, the deeper they both fall, but the secrets that Cassie is keeping threaten to tear them apart.
I already love Dalton and this just made me love him more. His backstory is heartbreaking and I can feel his desperation to be a better man. His feelings for Cassie are immediately strong and she has a way of calming him when he needs it.
Cassie was a bit of mystery. She’s sweet with a side of naughty and a lot naïve. She believes in fate and if you are meant to be together, you will find one another no matter the obstacles.
This short prequel was full of emotion and heart and heat. I feel like I’ve been waiting for Dalton’s story for forever and this short prequel just whetted my appetite for Dalton and Cassie’s full story in Caught Looking.
In this prequel novella we get the bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks just dying to get out of this town and all their judgmental attitudes. Dalton’s home life is in shambles and hopeless, so he relies heavily on his ride to college and he plans to keep his head down stay out of trouble until the day he sets eyes on his choir girl. Cassie is the epitome of the good girl, she is straight laced as they come and Dalton knows she is too good for someone like him but something about her draws him to her. For the summer they form a bond as friends that leads to more but with a very strict family how will they ever be together? With Cassie leaving soon can Dalton find out more about her to ever find her again? Fate doesn’t seem to be on their side when she leaves without a trace, but we will be getting more of their story soon and I can’t wait to see what will happen with them.
Dalton is counting down the days until he can finally escape his hometown until he meets an angelic beauty who makes him want to be a better person.
On Deck is a nice lead-up to Caught Looking that gives the back story of Dalton and introduces us to Cassie but also keeps her a little mysterious. It got me excited to read Caught Looking. I really enjoyed the banter between Dalton and Cassie.
On Deck contains... sports (baseball), high school, virgin, bad boy romance told in the first-person point of view of the hero.

I just started the book this novella accompanies and am very glad I took a quick detour to read this one before starting it. It gives a lot of background that is useful in the full length book with their story and gives a lot of background I wish we would have had for Dalton in the previous books, to be honest. I never really understood his bad boy rep in the other books, especially in Shannon's book, because he seemed like a truly good guy - just standoffish - but seeing his thought process behind being standoffish explained a lot as well.
This is also a good look at how Cassie is away from the influence of her hometown and I really appreciate that going into the full length book as well.
What a fabulous introduction to two upcoming characters, Cassie and Dalton, and the perfect teaser into their full story Caught Looking—which I cannot wait for now!!! This was the perfect intro into who they are as characters, what drives them and the perfect flashback showcasing their instant attraction/connection to each other.
If you’re a fan of the Cessna U Wildcats series, this prequel will give you further insight into Dalton, and why he’s the way he is. This is an emotional story of how one summer changed everything and altered his life’s course. So needless to say, this story will leave you breathless and dying for more. Well done Kimberly, well done!
He’s from the wrong side of the tracks with an absent mother and alcoholic dad. She’s visiting her wealthy aunt who hates his family. An instant attraction and Dalton Boyd and Casie Green begin a summer fling. Dalton is determined to make something of himself by scoring a baseball scholarship to a Division I college. He’s tried hard and succeeded so far to lay low for the summer until he leaves for college. But after meeting Cassie all bets are off. He is smitten by this girl who won’t even tell him where she’s from! A great intro the Cessna U baseball series!
*Fanning myself* This was a great quick hot read to introduce to new characters of the next upcoming book. Dalton and Cassie were like a moth to a flame, drawn to each other. Their story was well written with different POVs, which work well within the story and the romance was hot. It was page-turning from start to finish. Definitely worth the read to get more juicy tidbits before diving into the next book.
On Deck is the prequel that takes place before Dalton comes to Cessna U and I highly recommend you read it as the fourth book in the series. It answers so many questions about Dalton.
OMG I LOVED THEM! I have been putting off reading Cassie and Dalton’s story because then the series was over. Now I’m mad I waited so long. They were perfect. Dalton is doing everything he can to get out of his broken home when he meets Cassie one summer. Fate finally steps in and reunites these two but the obstacles they face threaten to tear them apart. This was a beautiful story of second chances, following your dreams and your heart, and true love. What a perfect ending!
This is a quick read and the prequel to Caught Looking. I really enjoyed this book and the characters. Dalton has had a rough life and a baseball scholarship is his way out. Cassie was just visiting an aunt for the summer and the sparks of young love were lit but Cassie has gone home and Dalton leaves for college….can’t wait to read about what happens next in Caught Looking.
This story completely sucked me in from the first page. Ms Readnour has managed to write amazing characters and have me totally invested in their story in a short novella and now I can’t wait to read the rest of Dalton and Cassie.
After read this I'm more invested in dalton and i didn't think that was possible. can't wait to finish Dalton and Cassie's story and see where life takes them.
A great little prequel to Dalton and Cassie's story. I'm looking forward to getting more into their story in their novel, Caught Looking. This does not have a HEA, as their story does continue in a full length novel, which is available now.
I love this short! It’s everything I’d expect from a Kimberly Readnour book and I CANT WAIT for the book it leads into. Can’t get enough of this authors books.
