A sparkling anthology of romantic short stories set in the first half of the twentieth century. From a son's guilt to a blossoming love between a feisty nurse and a Doctor who uses humour to help injured troops, an art theft (Agatha Christie-style) and a Hollywood actress battling for acceptance in the male world of flying; each story gives its own snapshot into a fascinating period of the past. It is clear the authors have researched and are passionate about the era which has resulted in four uniquely different stories. I loved Sarah Fiddelaer's evocative writing and thoughtful, ethical hero; Nancy Cunningham's action-packed mix of pathos and humour; Ava January's colourful cast of characters and laugh out loud moments, and Clare Griffin's delightful portrayal of Rosamund, a leading lady who fights to stand up for herself in a male-dominated world. (and still finds love, of course). If I had to choose a favourite, (by a whisper), it would have to be Nancy Cunningham's, "An Easter Lily on the Somme." (I think I must have a thing for cheeky Doctors and slightly up-tight nurses and their interactions really made this one gold for me). As you can guess, in all four, Happy Ever After is delivered beautifully. Forget buying yourself an Easter egg this year, buy Easter Promises instead.

This was an excellent anthology that was very well written, polished and edited. It's a very professional package by the four authors involved.
All four of the stories centre around either an Easter activity, or an Easter timeline, with two of the four having wartime settings, and two also having medical settings. The first story by Sarah Fiddelears features everything I've come to expect from this author - clever word choices - and a gentle, yet well paced story that although short, built beautifully through to the end.
I highlighted this particular phrase that I loved: 'At the mouth of the bay sat Widuwe, a calm sentinel in the mass of black water that chewed at its edges.' I just loved the use of the word 'chewed' :)
While I enjoyed all four stories, I was particularly taken with the third in the anthology by Ava January called Le Malin Renard. There was something about this story that just felt completely sumptuous all the way through. I loved the chemistry between the two characters. I thought this was beautifully plotted, with great tension, as the characters are caught in a storm on top of a mountain at an exclusive resort.
For four short stories that have engaging plots, these are bite-sized and perfect for an 'isolated' night's reading.

I didn’t think I liked short stories, but these were fantastic. They are all full stories just condensed, I felt completely satisfied and happy with all of them. April was a great time to be reading them too, very Easter Perfect. I loved that these were all strong female role models crossing boundaries at pivotal points in history. I loved the romance of it all. Such a perfect escape 💕🐣💕

This is a lovely anthology from 4 Australian authors.
There is a different feeling to them all- the first one is Easter Dawn, set on island in Australia and is lyrical and emotive. Minnie is love with her childhood sweetheart and is a little innocent and protected from the world around her. When her love finds himself on the verge of a big life choice, she has to dig deep and determine for herself who she wants to be. This story is just so pretty! The writing is so descriptive and I could almost smell the ocean air.
An Easter Lily on the Somme is next, set in a war hospital in France I was pleasantly surprised at how the author handled the setting. I usually don’t like stories set in the war because they upset me but she used a light touch on the horrors that were faced in the war and uses it to forge a connection between the main characters that is believable and passionate. I loved the light and shade between the humorous doctor and stern nurse.
Then we have Le Malin Renard which has a totally different feel to the first two- it’s so funny! The setting is really unique, it is set in a hotel up a cliff that can only be reached by a funicular. Ariadne is at the hotel for an art auction with lots of suspicious characters and I’m not sure i can say much more than that without ruining it. The sexual tension between Ariadne and Evander was SO HOT and the dining room scene with the hands... phew pass me a cold cloth! The stole ‘stole’ every scene it was in and needs it’s own book!
Last is Eos- it is snappy, sexy and a really unique premise. I had never read anything about female pilots and loved the sprinkling of real characters like Howard Hughes.
Rosamund Winter (I LOVED her name!) is a famous Hollywood actress who gives it all up to learn to fly planes for the American World War II effort.

Overall a great set of short stories and I will be keeping my eyes out for books from these authors!

I received an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

Okay, confession here, I had the job of proofreading this book. So you can blame me for any typos that slip through. Ha ha - of course not, it'll be perfect (gulp!)

What I'm trying to say is that I read all four stories three times each and they felt fresh each time - the characters shone, the historical settings made the perfect backdrop, and the storylines held my attention. And it was the perfect amount of romance and humour for me -it really hit the spot. Particularly because they all feature very strong women, in their own ways. Favourite character? Let's just say that a little mink (or should that be minx!) stole my attention the most :)

But this is an all-around excellent anthology by four independent authors who are mostly starting out on what I would hope to be a very successful journey, as shown by the competitions they're placing in. Looking forward to their next publications!

Each story in this terrific anthology by Australian writers has a unique take on what is an Easter promise…

*This review contains spoilers*

I really enjoyed this selection, particularly because of the diversity of the stories. Overall, the descriptions and scene settings were brilliant, the characters were colourful and engaging, and the four unique time periods provided vastly different storylines. The first thing I noticed was that each piece was in chronological order— interestingly, it was reminder of the increasing social changes of each period. As we moved through each story, the female characters were depicted breaking down society’s barriers—real and imagined— becoming bolder as time progressed.

In “Easter Dawn” set in the early 20th century, the pressures of class and protocol are still evident, with Minnie and Eric adhering to the long-held values of previous generations, but with philanthropic concern to help those less fortunate. To see a man turn his back on a wealthy and comfortable lifestyle and choose instead to help the poor was admirable, but to have Minnie— depicted as a soft and gentle young woman to begin with—grow with strength and courage to surprise Eric with her tenacity, was a highlight.

“An Easter Lily on the Somme” touched my emotions with vivid reality, as nurse, Ivy and doctor, Maurice, found love amongst the blood and death of a Casualty Clearing Station in France, during WWI. Serious Ivy is irritated by the humour Doctor Fletcher uses under pressure, but she is nursing her own silent pain. The softer side of Maurice with his sketches, and the kind and generous heart of Ivy added a poignant touch to the battlefields surrounding them. Evocative and moving, ‘Easter dawn’ is reminiscent of the wonderful ‘Desert Nurse’ by Pamela Hart. I wanted Nancy Cunningham’s story to continue.

“Le Malin Renard’”was a little harder for me, probably because I initially missed the ‘tongue in cheek’ humour at its core. But a re-read had me chuckling and the fast pace was a winner. Without doubt, the main character— the wicked and witty, Ariadne, certainly reminded me of many a ‘femme fatale’ central to an Agatha Christie mystery. There is no doubting the attraction between the man who hunts her, and the mark he leaves on her—and it goes without saying that there is the constant building of sexual tension! I loved Ariadne’s confidence, her unashamed vanity and of course, the ‘renard’ stole was an amusing addition.

The final story, “Eos,” was delightful. I immediately connected to actress, Rosamund Winter and loved her interaction with the males throughout the story. The dialogue was brilliant— especially between Pearl and Rosie in later chapters. And Tobias gave me shivers from the start—in a good way! A great cast of characters, including those based on real people throughout history, kept the storyline moving along. I enjoy a good romance in an historical story, but particularly when based on interesting and true events. A standout.

I enjoyed this anthology, not my usual choice to read, but I would read one again by any of these four fine authors.

I received an advanced copy of this book to provide an honest review.

Easter Promises is my first historical anthology.
I love me a bit of historical fiction and in Easter promises I could enjoy four fantastic stories in one.
All so different in writing styles yet I connected with each and every story, not wanting to see the dreaded ‘The end’ as I fall in love with the characters, always wanting to know what will happen to them next.
Strong women defying social norms, laugh out loud moments and gorgeous descriptions of 1900’s attire are some of the many highlights in this anthology.
I look forward to reading more stories from these wonderful Australian authors.

Four heart-warming historical romances by four incredibly talented Australian authors! Easter Promises is a wonderful collection of HEAs which had me sighing after each one, wrapped in the warm fuzzies! The research and setting of every story was masterfully done. If historical romance is your jam, def do yourself a favour, stay in this Easter and indulge yourself….

The anthology opens with Sarah Fiddelaers's gorgeous prose and in a few short pages, Easter Dawn had me strolling along the sandy dunes of Australian beaches back in the 1900’s, torn by Eric’s sense of duty and his love for childhood sweetheart. Admittedly, I had wondered how the author planned to “grow” the heroine over such short chapters, but Minnie’s growth had been masterfully done. And the ending? Oh, so sweet!

Nancy Cunningham’s An Easter Lily on the Somme was a marked change of pace where we were quickly transported to far darker times in France during WWI where we were introduced to a strait-laced nurse and a glib-tongued doctor. Oh my! Awesome banter and deeeelicious chemistry. And let me just say, what a delight it was watching Ivy split her seam! lol

Ava January’s Le Malin Renard was another change of pace, one that completely took me by surprise. Did not expect the mystery angle but I totally enjoyed it. Particularly enjoyed the intriguing cast. I adored Ariadne’s sassiness and gah, the attraction between her and Evander? Def needs more page time….!

And lastly comes Clare Griffin's Eos, (and I must admit, the story which grabbed me the most). Tobias? Swooony sigh. Yes, please! And Rosamund was such a well-crafted character I related to her instantly. And come on, an actress turned female pilot set in WWII? Need I say more??

If you love historical romance, you'll fall in love with Easter Promises an anthology of four dazzling stories from four emerging Australian historical fiction authors.
Each story takes you back to different eras - Australia 1912, France 1916, France 1924, and Hollywood, 1943 - with strong female protagonists making their mark in history in very different ways.
You will be intrigued by the strong characters, evocative story-lines, and smoldering romance within each story as you are whisked away in page-turning fashion.
The only negative is that it will all be over before you know it, leaving you wanting more - in a good way.
5 stunning stars! And if what's within the pages of Easter Promises is anything to go by, I'm looking forward to following each of these author's careers with anticipation.

A wonderful collection of 4 - very different - short historical fiction stories. I don’t tend to read a lot of short stories so it was a nice change to engross myself in the lives of 4 women of the past, all with different challenges to face.

All in all Easter Promises is a great and easy read! (The kind of book you can pick up and finish over an Easter weekend 🙂)

I really wanted to rate this book more but unfortunately I only liked two of the four stories. One of the stories, I couldn’t read more than two chapters as the storyline and characters didn’t hold my interest. The other story at least did that but I found the storyline predictable and probably could have been a few chapters shorter. However, the two stories I did enjoy had wonderful, loveable characters, were well written and had me greedily turning pages. Sorry ladies, wish I could give it more stars though ☹️

I just love the setting of this story set in France, 1924 at a Chateau on a cliff that is only accessed by a funicular. 12 guests are invited to an art auction when they all find themselves snowed in with on way down as the funicular has broken.

Ariadne Aries is enjoying the arrivals of all the different guests to the art auction as she gives us a humorous look into the ride up on the funicular.

Evander Jones is an inspector on the hunt of the emphasise international art thief Le Malin Renard. But this job might give him more than what he is looking for when the chemistry with one of the guess builds to something more.

A great historical mystery that will give you a real elegant feel

As a lover of historical fiction- particularly if it’s set in the 20th Century- this beautiful anthology hit all the right spots for me.
Within the pages of its gorgeous cover are four stories, each written by a different author, with each story focusing on the often forgotten or untold stories of women’s contributions and inner lives throughout the first half of the 20th Century.
Clare Griffin, Sarah Fiddelaers, Ava January and Nancy Cunningham- all of whom are Australian- do an excellent job of immediately drawing the reader into the world they have created, whether that is the battlefields of the Western Front during the First World War or the cockpit of a plane flown by one of the daring women of the WASPs in World War Two.
Each writer skillfully handles the pacing and plotting, creating memorable characters who stay with you long after the last page has been turned.

This Anthology comprises of four historical romance short stories set at Easter. Very well written and easy to read. While the stories were all in the same genre, I enjoyed the diversity between them, with a few of them I really was left wanting more. Not that the story felt unfinished, I just loved the characters and felt like I had been given a taster and wanted to read more to find out what happened next. I enjoyed the refreshing addition of some humor and mystery in one of the stories as well. The quality of the writing by these upcoming new Australian authors certainly demonstrates that there should be some great novels coming into the market this year.
