Well the story continues. In this one we have crooked cops, talking to fish and crabs and an unlikely friend during a card game. In this one Jolene is forced to tell Peter some of her secrets. I think he'll stay with her but I wonder what the other secret is? I like the fact that Jolene got to shut the door on some areas of her past and got some answers for herself in this one.

snakes! this was a fabulous read .
I was so pleased Jolene finally came clean with Peter. They are both adorable characters.
I enjoyed getting to know Will a little more in this book, and I hope to hear more about him as the series progresses.
This had me glued to the pages and I couldn't put it down till I had it finished.
I'm sooo looking forward to the next book.

Solid mystery. I’m getting used to the interactions between Jolene and Daisy. They’re still a little annoying but not as noticeable anymore. In this one, we learn more about Jolene, her past, the curse, and how their world works so it has more depth than the previous one. Curious to see how it all plays out from here, with the introduction of Ludolf Caterwaul.

This series so far has been so much fun. I love Erin Johnson's writing style and find her books imaginative and easy to read.
Updated: The audio book is really so much fun. The narration is so well done, It really is a pleasure to listen too.

She finally gets a bit of closure
A fine read. A great plot of treachery, murder, blackmail and general nefarious doings. Our heroine is growing and evolving as she gets part closure on her past. But the big question is - who was the guy in the alley?
The policeman's ball has her decked out in the finest they can scrounge and with the mask she feels safe. Safe until the man of the year is killed, everyone is ordered to take their masks off and she meets the woman who cursed her. The following investigation leads her to a illegal gambling ring, the rescue of a dog, finding out why she was cursed and getting her detective suspended as well as a visit to the king of the criminal world. Will the things she uncovered lead to the killer or will she be silenced? Will Peter be reinstated? Will she tell him the truth and what will she do about the man in the alley?
A well paced read but it just makes me wonder if the man in the alley knows her true background and why she ended up in the orphanage. Hope he is dealt his just deserts in the next book.

Jolene is a ball of sass, and I love her. This next installment left me with a bit of mixed feelings. Some parts of the story were a bit too out of the believably realm, or too rushed.
While the main plot mystery was fantastic, and a good 'bad people will be exposed' story, Jolenes personal coming to terms moments were lackluster. I was surprised at her 'cursed story' and had a hard time believing it. In the sense that if shifters are feared/hated, how did a room full of people not blab to the island, and how was she able to just walk back in there without the cops being called? idk, this ponder pulled me way out of the story. (i am an overthinker though!) The follow ups with Zale and the other lady were also a let down emotionally. This incident was a corner stone to who Jolene is now, and it just didn't hold as important on the page I guess. All of the revelations were perfect story wise, just the reveal and reaction fell flat for me.
I love the progression Jolene & Peter are making with their friendship and trust issues. They make a great team, (daisy too!) I'm excited to see what Peter does in the next books, and how the underground will pull at Jolene.

Game of Bones by Erin Johnson is the third book in Magic Market Mysteries. Jolene Hartgrave attending the masked policeman’s ball with Officer Peter Flint and his partner, Daisy (she is a police officer with an official badge). Jolene is surprised to find her old boss, fiancé, and the evil woman who cursed her also in attendance. She has yet to tell Peter that she is a shifter as well as a lawyer who was cursed by a jealous co-worker, so she does her best to avoid them (employs evasive maneuvers). But then the officer of the year is found floating in the water beside the ship. Peter and a reluctant Jolene team up to unmask the killer. Game of Bones can be read as a standalone if you are new to this paranormal mystery series. This is another humorous tale featuring Jolene, Peter and Daisy. I admit that I am puzzled by Jolene at times. I do not understand her lack of hygiene. I want to see Jolene move past what happened to her. She has been just existing instead of living. It is also time for Jolene to be upfront with Peter. Peter needs to know the truth soon or their relationship will be dead in the water. I love the snark between Daisy and Jolene. It is humorous, but I feel bad for Daisy. I was tickled that Heidi took charge to make sure that Jolene looked fabulous for the ball. Game of Bones has a fun mystery with good clues to aid readers in solving the crime. In addition to the mystery, Jolene is summoned to see Ludolf Caterwaul, head of the Shifter Underground. Jolene also gets an opportunity to confront her past and get some much needed answers. Game of Bones is an amusing tale with quirky characters, a unique world, and a merry mystery.

The Policeman's Ball is a masquerade and that is the only reason Jolene has decided to accompany Peter. She has no desire to run into the people she's sure will be there. Those like her former Boss, her ex-fiancé and the person who cursed her.
Peter doesn't seem very happy to be in attendance either, he doesn't particularly care for the Officer of the Year or his cronies. He catches them harrassing a rookie before the dinner.
Things were going fine for Jolene until she runs into Eve in the ladies room. That could have been a disaster, but it was avoided when a woman gushed over Eve's engagement ring. Seems Eve not only took Jolene's job but also her fiancé.
Now we've got two people who really don't want to be at this function, and then things fall apart when said Officer of the Year fails to show at the podium, and the Rookie says someone's been murdered. There's a bit of a difference in location when the body is found in the water.
Jolene doesn't get away with this tactic for long, and she actually does have a conversation with her ex and Eve. The interaction only serves to raise questions in Peter's mind.
Although she gets some time away from him, Peter once again enlists her aid in his investigation. Unfortunately, it isn't an official one.
Jolene's past is coming out in pieces and she really needs to deal with both parties and find it in her heart to tell Peter the truth.
There are more than a few surprises in this one including a summons to the Shifter King.
Plenty of ups and downs, twists and turns as Jolene figures a good part of the mystery out.
I am already reading the next book.

Wow I love this series. I was really looking forward to this book coming out, having listened to the previous two books and listened to the preview at the end of the last one I was excited to listen to this book. It didn't disappoint. The characters are what makes it such a fun and quirky series (and a must listen) and I really like the way the relationship between the two characters is developing and of course the fun with the animals. The mystery was good and I didn't work out who the killer was. Can't wait for the next book to come out to see what more trouble Jolene can get herself in.
Jolene has trouble saying no to the handsome cop which is why she finds herself attended the policeman ball, the ball her ex co-workers and ex fiance will also be attending. The only good thing is, is it is a masquerade ball and down on her luck pet psychic Jolene looks a lot different now compared to her high powered lawyer suits. Nobody will recognise her, right. If only that was the worst thing she had to worry about. While at the party the officer who is being recognised for his brave work is murdered and Jolene finds herself once again acting as a consultant for the police. She can't possible keep her two worlds apart as she investigates, especially as one of the first people that needs interviewing is her old boss. Torn between helping the handsome cop and keeping her secret Jolene must pull of a miracle, to bad she is the only one in Bejumere that can't use magic.
I really like the narrator she is so bubbly that you can't help but get swept up in the story too.

Game of Bones is The Magic Market Mysteries’ latest installment and may be the best yet.
The mystery of who killed Officer Davies is the one Jolene and Peter set out to solve in Book 3. It’s a bit difficult for the investigative duo to get fully into their work, at the beginning, as there is also the need to prove the death is even a murder. However, this team trusts their instincts and set out to uncover the truth of the matter. We meet a handful of suspects and as the story progresses we find several motives as well. The mystery collides with Jolene’s past when another suspect emerges, one who knew her well in her lawyer days. These encounters with Jolene’s past are informative but are they relevant to the mystery… hmmm… Mix them in with the red herrings and real clues and you’ve got a well-paced, well-plotted mystery to sink your teeth into.
Character development is strong in this installment as we delve into Jolene’s backstory, meet some of the key players in her old life and see her struggle with how to reconcile past with present. We have the chance to see Jolene at her brashest and her most vulnerable all within this story. It’s also entertaining to see how Peter struggles to cope with the many sides of Jolene and how he tries to be patient and understanding, even when he knows she’s being less than honest with him. The romantic tension increases, as does the tension created by Jolene’s secret keeping.
Series arc: The bigger series is arc is explored in more detail in Book 3 as well. We meet the leader of the underworld and find out that the curse cast on Jolene may not have been a simple revenge plot after all…

Yet another title that has nothing to do with the story. And what's with the weird epithets? Beach and shell are curse words? Really?! I get being creative with them because this is a fantasy world, but at least use words that aren't completely innocuous in place of words that are meant to express strong feelings. It's precious, and not in a good way.
I will give the author some credit for making this story a little more redemptive for the protagonist. The previous two ended on more and more depressing notes, but this one has her making her peace with her past and deciding that it's time to move on. I thought it was well done, actually, and it leaves a small mystery to be solved later in the series - who was the guy that provided the potion, and what was it?
Not sure I'll read the rest of the series, but I'll probably read at least one more - if only to find out if Jolene tells Peter the rest of it and if Daisy is more accepting now that she's shared some of her secrets.

Loving this series!
I like this story with its crisp writing, engaging murder mystery, and slight elements of humor and romance. The characters are more questionable for this reader, though. Jolene seems to lack pride, which is puzzling given her backstory; her hygiene alone is enough to render her off-putting. Peter's perfection and boyishness is one-dimensional, and Daisy is a self-righteous, prejudiced creature that doesn't belong on the covers of a series named for someone else. I do like how loyal Will and Heidi are; Jolene could use a break! I especially appreciate how deftly the author introduces a new mystery the reader is unaware of that has the potential to span several books. Jolene is showing signs of improvement, and I can't wait to see where the few intriguing tidbits about her past will lead!

Just when you thought things couldn’t get more convoluted…
“Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when we practice to deceive…“ Or so the old rhyme goes. And very much so, this is the case with our poor heroine, Jolene.
It’s difficult to honestly say how I would handle her situation, because, let’s face it, this is fantasy not reality lol. So, I’m definitely not prepared to judge her. But, oh, does she ever get deep into it this time!
Again, as with the second book, humor takes a backseat in favor of story. Personally, you’ll hear no complaints here. Jolene’s life continues to get more chaotic and the story begins to get more cohesive. Erin Johnson is weaving a tale that I am excited to see continue. I really do wanna know what’s gonna happen next, and so will you. So, do yourself a favor, just pick up the book and read it, I guarantee you, you will enjoy!

OMG so loved reading this third book in the series of the paranormal book! Jolene’s adventure with the handsome cop that she has been crushing on, he invites her to the Police Man’s Annual Ball she’s so nervous and excite all rolled together about going!
Can you believe that they picked an old pirate ship to have the event at and some rumors are that it’s haunted, then it all started to go down hill for Jolene when she sees her old boss from the law firm she worked at, her ex-fiancé and the woman who cursed her!
Thank goodness it was a masquerade ball so no one knew who she was......that was until the murder and everything went south!
You won’t regret purchasing this book, it’s s a fantastic sleuth of an adventure with Jolene, Peter and Daisy dog!

The action is definitely heating up in this series. Best so far.
Jolene accepts Peter's invitation to the policeman's ball, but soon regrets it when she spots Eve, her nemesis who gave her the curse that removed her powers, and discovers that Eve is now engaged to her ex fiance, Zane. Then the newly acclaimed Police Officer of the Year is found dead in the water off the ship. A crab tells Jolene that the deceased was grabbed by men in police uniforms.
Jolene goes to an underground casino to find out more about the dead cop and looks for proof of corruption in the police force.
Peter is disappointed that Jolene does not trust him enough to tell him the truth. Eventually she does - at least most of it.

Very suspenseful, Jolene makes peace with her past
Book 3 is another great book in this series. I read it in every free moment I had. Each character is unique and well developed. The plot is enjoyable. Jolene is having to learn how to trust. Peter gives her a lot of chances. She does some risky things in this book. Will and Heidi continue to provide backup for Jolene. This story kept me on the edge of my seat with worry for Jolene. The story was intense. Daisy is getting more credit for how smart she is. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes mysteries, paranormal, or pet stories. I look forward to reading book 4.

Balls and Blackmail
Persuaded to go to the Policeman's Ball as Peter's guest Jolene is just relieved it's a masked event and she can hide from everyone behind the beautiful black feathered mask Heidi has made.
There's every possibility she'll bump into people from her past, and in fact, she does pretty quickly but the hiding in plain sight doesn't last long when the policeman of the year Dylan Davies disappears only for his body to surface overboard.
Chief Taylor seems reluctant to investigate and Jolene is not keen herself when the main suspect appears to be her old boss. Can she continue to hide in plain sight or will her secrets finally be revealed?

Jolene goes to the Police Ball with Peter and must have felt like Cinderella or at least herself from the life before. Things don't turn out well with a body at the ball and everyone being questioned. Jolene has to avoid and then face her past to get the answers she needs for herself and Peter. I was surprised by the murderer and did not see that twist. I need to know more about the man in the street and who provided Eve the means. Jolene seems to be growing as a person and I hope she starts to move on the right track to get her life back together instead of the sketch existence she now has.

A ghost, a pirate ship, and Jolene's past!
This series just keeps getting better! There is a death at the Policeman's Ball. Is it murder or just an accident? Did the ghost of the Pirate captain have anything to do with it? Can Jolene keep away from her former co-workers at the party? The residents of the fish tank seem somewhat muddled about it all when Jolene questions them. We learn more about Jolene's past, but will she tell Peter? Can't wait for the next book!!

Very entertaining
I listened to the audio version.
Such a fun story and the narration lifts this story to the next level.
Ooh, Jolene is in a right pickle. At the policeman’s ball there are people from her previous life… who could out her as a lowly shifter… Snakes! This is not going as it should!
A lot is happening, and not all to do with the investigation! Jolene’s life is never boring! And neither is this book. Fast-paced as ever, full of humor and very entertaining. Will Daisy sniff out the truth?

Jolene really is the worst at being a detective. Ok not the worst because she does solve it but she never seems to pick the correct person. Often times telling the whole thing to the actual murderer. It is a quirk I guess. The mystery this time was a touch less telegraphed, which was nice. I guess be have a new running through line with who caused her to lose her powers. I am still here for the next book, but also not sure how I really feel about the series as a whole. The animal interactions this time were more fun. Great narration keeping the story moving and engaged.

I love this series about a flawed wonderful character who continues to develop and grow. I love that this character shows growth and is not stuck in her flawed state. The supporting characters are diverse and the relationships entertaining. I did receive an ARC copy which I only accepted because I can give honesty positive reviews of Erin Johnson’s works. She writes fun, entertaining stories with characters that are easy to relate to, making them a joy to read.

What to do?
Zoe and Peter seem to be getting closer and make good partners working together. Zoe decides to go to the Ball with Peter and that night makes a lot of changes for everyone. I loved the rest of the book as it wasn't what I was expecting. Through everyone all the decisions Zoe makes, are they the right ones? I can't wait for the next book to see what tight spots Zoe and Peter will have to deal with this time.

I'm still amazed by how fast I'm reading these books. It's interesting to see how Jolene, a bit of an unlikable character, is developing into more likable character, someone who's starting to give a damn about what's she's doing with her life. It's quite a subtle journey as it is for us in real life. The tension in whether she's going to come clean to Peter or not is building. It's a cute story that's evolving. Onto the next book!

Game of Bones by Erin Johnson is book #3 in the series and the reader starts to hear the background of the heroine as she tells it as background. The case is either an accident or a murder. Officer Fitch and his consultant with a running battle of words with Daisy, Fitch's dog partner adds some levity.
The police say it was an accident. but the trio of Fitch, Daisy, and the heroine have doubts and unravel the conspiracy to murder.
A fast read I liked.

My favorite thing about cozy mysteries is the characters, and Johnson does not fail to give us some amazing ones! I love how the relationship between Peter and Jolene advanced in this book, but I wish she would be more honest with him still. Hopefully that comes soon! As for the mystery, it was a great one! I was able to figure it out right along with Jolene and Peter. This series continues to improve and I cannot wait to see what happens next!

Jolene may think it's a lame ability, but talking to animals comes quite in handy with her continuing exploits. What exploits you ask? Read the book! It's actually quite fun to read, IF you have imagination and an open mind. I just wish Jolene would trust her policeman with all her secrets. Seems to me, he has proven himself over and over. I definitely recommend this book and the first two others of the series.
