Rate this book
If you could have any ocean animal's superpower, whose would you choose?

What if you woke up one morning, and you suddenly had the superpower of an ocean animal? If you could shapeshift like a giant Pacific octopus, you could squeeze through even the smallest gaps. If you could snap your claws like a coconut crab, you could slice through sheets of metal. And if you could sniff like a great white shark, you'd be able to smell treats from miles away! With zany illustrations and amazing true facts, What If You Could Sniff Like a Shark? launches a brand-new series from bestselling creators Sandra Markle and Howard McWilliam. The What If You Could...? books have all the appeal of the What If You Had...?titles, but focus on animal superpowers and feature a fresh new design.

Packed with interesting facts about ocean creatures! There’s lots to learn about the special “powers” of ocean animals, such as the puffer fish and its ability or inflate, or the octopus who can squeeze through the tiniest openings. There are bright, full color photos of each animal, as well as silly illustrations of children embracing the specific animals “super power”. Also included are text boxes with basic facts about the animals and extra facts. A fun nonfiction read for elementary age children.

My Kindergartner is obsessed with all of these books by Sandra Markle!
The illustrations are vibrant, funny and engaging.
The science facts are very interesting and have lead to more exploration.
This is the least annoying to reread!

Children's nonfiction. The latest entry in the What If You Had Animal Teeth!? series takes a look at the adaptations of various sea creatures. Each creature gets two full-page spreads dedicated to them. The spreads include: a question with the animal's name and superpower, range of the animal, two examples of how a human could use the "superpower," labeled body diagram, adult size, life span, diet, lifecycle info, and a fun fact. The cartoony illustrations of the humans with the superpowers connect the books to others in this series. The format is engaging but makes the book hard for a read-aloud. I do find it interesting that a nonfiction book uses cutesy language such as superpower and "growing up" rather than adaptation and lifecycle. Overall another fun informative book best to use individually or in a small group.
