When recovering from PTSD, addiction, depression, anxiety, or any other emotional difficulty, there are certain lessons most of us have to learn the hard way. Psychologist and popular self-help blogger Dr. Glenn Doyle has collected twenty (and a half!) of these lessons he and his patients have learned the hard way-- and put them down in a way that is concise, readable, and memorable. Dr. Doyle's approach to recovery is practical, realistic, and solution-oriented, and aimed to be helpful to the average person struggling to heal and move forward in their life.
This was, for me a very vivid reminder of the work I did while in treatment for alcoholism. Yet also the work I continued to do after such, and am still practicing today. Some of these 'lessons' had slipped away and it was indeed handy for that reminder. Interestingly, much of the content of the book comes into play quite regularly for me and is ever evolving. Well written and presented. Useful in most if not all of life's scenarios as it is quite adaptable.
I enjoy reading Dr. Doyle blogs and this book summaries a lot of his most important teachings about coping with depression, anxiety and other mental health issues. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to reinforce or learn about self care and moving forward to a life with the skill and tools to make it a happy life.
Solid lessons with a dash of humor, without the condescending tone some clinicians can have and certainly not the simpering tone many self help gurus take on. Definitely worth the time to review in snippets or all in one go.
