Giving up? Or moving on? That’s the question for thirty-something Marsaili McKenzie. Ten years after fleeing her tiny coastal village for dreams of fame and fortune in the big city, she finds herself on the brink of an existential crisis. Far from being the star actress she once imagined, she’s still working as a barmaid in a Glasgow theatre while all around her, her friends and family are getting engaged, pregnant or promoted. It’s all she can do to keep her head above water. But as a new year approaches, she resolves to give her acting dreams one last shot. That is, until a couple of unexpected distractions arrive on the scene. Will Hunter is undeniably handsome, as well as being aloof, socially awkward, posh and in the middle of a nasty divorce. And to make things even more complicated, he’s also her new boss. Local boy made good, soap star Euan Campbell, is the epitome of a charismatic leading man. His easy-going charm soon sweeps Marsaili off her feet, but is there more to him than meets the eye? To top it all off, Marsaili finds herself inexplicably drawn back to the simple, rural life she used to loathe. Can she finally figure out which dreams are worth pursuing, and would it really be so bad to resort to her back up career after all? Join Marsaili as she navigates the choppy seas of love, family, friendship and self-discovery. This heart-warming novel is full of romance, laughter and more than enough drama to keep you on the edge of your seat!
Elsie McArthur is an independent author of women's fiction. After studying law at university, and then re-training as a primary school teacher, she now lives in the Highlands of Scotland with her two kids, a badly behaved cocker spaniel and a cat with a superiority complex. As well as continuing to work part time as a teacher, she is now indulging in her first love of writing. Her first book, 'The Back Up Plan', was released in January 2020. Her second novel, 'Love, on the Rocks' - a tale of love, loss and starting over set on the remote Scottish island of Inniscreag - is due for release in Summer 2020.
This was a beautifully written contemporary romance set in gorgeous Scotland. Throughout the story the emotions of the characters were palpable and evocative.
The Highlands figure in this story as a secondary character, their solemnity and ancient landscapes pull you in to the point that you can almost feel the wind on your cheeks, hear the water lapping on the shore of the Loch and hear the music and the beautiful voices of the people.
The main characters of The Back Up Plan however drawn they might be to each other and the Highlands are both at a crossroads in their lives. They must change now or carry on as unsatisfied and lonely for the rest of their lives. Neither one can help the other overcome their issues. They are constantly bumping heads and misinterpreting each other motivations and actions. Mired in what they know and are comfortable with they were afraid of change because it meant stepping out and taking a chance with their lives and with each other. True love wins out and change comes while taking separate paths to find it. It is satisfying journey and with an amazing ending.
I absolutely loved this book and the writing style. Set in Scotland you get both the City side with Glasgow and then when Marsaili (rhymes with Parsley!) goes home we get to experience the lovely rural side of Scotland. All places I've been (although Skye before the bridge!) and it brought it all back so vividly, as the writing was just wonderful. You also get some lovely Scottish dialect and sayings, some of which I had never encountered before.
The main character Marsaili is a little (well a lot) self effacing and that was the only trait I wished she could lose. Otherwise I felt she was a little bit of a soul sister for me. She said so many things I would say myself and she and all the characters just felt so true to life. Sometimes you can read a book and think "why would they do or say that" but I felt so in sync with Marsaili.
Marsaili wants to be an actor but she's been trying for an awfully long time and to fill in she works in a bar in a theatre. There single and fed up she manages to meet not one but two men who both fall for her. Will she end up with one of them or none at all?
I can't praise the style of writing enough. Do you sometimes look into people's houses when the lights are on and they haven't yet closed the curtains? For me this book was just like that. The author took you in and you got a front row seat into their lives. I couldn't wait to get back to the book each time and I'm going to miss everyone.
I'm giving this book 5 out of 5 stars. Elsie is an author who deserves more recognition when she can write so well. If you are looking for a nice comfortable read of an everyday story that could and probably has happened, then this is the book for you.
My thanks to Elsie for a copy of this lovely book. At the moment it is free on Kindle unlimited and it's only 1.99 to buy on kindle too.
Book Title: The Backup Plan, Giving Up or Moving On? Author: Elsie McArthur Author Type: Indie Star Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Saucy Romance Rating: 🔥🔥 Release Date: January 17, 2020 Recommend: Yes
Marsaili McKenzie’s current life finds her unlucky in the pursuit of her acting career and unlucky in love. Swearing off men to give her career one last go before she throws in the towel and gets a real job is the goal, but the universe has other plans when it plants two gorgeous men in her path. One is an actor named Euan, at the Glasgow theatre where she works as a barmaid, the other is her boss, Will. Marsaili must choose between men and careers, and in the process, she just might find herself instead.
I enjoyed this book completely and gave it 5 stars. This book is wonderful for readers who enjoy Women’s Fiction and Contemporary Romance. I especially loved that the narration was written with a lyrically Scottish approach that flowed beautifully. It is the first time I have read a book narrated like this, and it was a complete joy to read. It was a great break from the typical US translations I’m used to. Her book was defiantly an escape to Scotland.
Elsie McArthur is an indie author that created an entertaining story about a thirty-something woman trying to get her life back on track. It was hard to put down once I started reading. It kept me hooked, and my need to know what would happen next propelled me through the novel. Marsaili, Will, and Euan are all well-developed characters. I got to know each of them. Marsaili frustrated me and gained my respect as the character developed. The story is easy to read and flows well through the highs and lows as Marsaili experienced them.
This was a sweet, lighthearted novel. It was easy to empathize with Marsaili, the main character, and the struggles she faces trying to become an actress. I liked the insight into the acting world and what happens behind the curtains. I also loved the descriptions of Scottish landscape (I think I want to visit Scotland now), and the humor (who knew there was a lake called Loch Lochy?). Of course I loved Will, because he was a real man with weaknesses and wasn't ashamed to cry and reinvent himself. I also enjoyed Marsaili's mother, with her "mother hen" behavior and the way she used Scottish expressions. All in all, a pleasant read to evade from the real world and close the book with a smile.
I loved this book! The man character, marsaili navigates her existence in the world. And finally realized sometimes dreams don’t work out. She is such a relatable character. This was a book about moving on and finding yourself through time. ❤️❤️
The Back Up Plan by Elsie McArthur is a fun, light, and easy read. I rate this book a full 5 Stars. It is what I would consider a perfect Summer Beach Read. The book is set in Scotland. Myself, being from the US, appreciated the writing of McArthur as I felt I got a real sense of what it is like to live in that part of the world. The characters, especially the main character Marsaili McKenzie and her family, are fun and relatable making you instantly care about them and the decisions they make. The journey of the book makes you question your own goals in life. Could your Back Up Plan actually be better than your original? And would you be strong enough in your convictions to make that choice of change?
I really enjoyed that the main character, Marsaili McKenzie, is not the US typical size 0 Angelina Jolie heroine type. She is a very real size 14 representing so many who actually live in this world. And what struck me is that her size NEVER plays a role in how men see her. She is the only one who at times is critical of her looks based on her size. I found this book to have such a great body image message. She is seen as sexy and attractive by many others. Just as it should be.
I believe in Spoiler Free reviews as I never want to give away twists or shocks or endings. I will say that when you finish the book you will want to pump your fist in the air and yell ‘Yay”. The ending is that satisfying. I highly recommend this 5 Star book and will continue to buy future books by this author.
What a surprise this book was. I picked up the book thinking it was going to be a nice little chic-lit romcom and to my delight, Ms McArthur brought forth a remarkable character named Marsaili (rhymes with parsley). There were moments when I wanted to shake Marsalis by the shoulders for some of her decisions. Yet, in the end, I was so proud of her I shouted out, “good for you, Marsaili!” McArthur’s skill in developing a character that at first glance seems a bit flighty and then moving the character into one of strength, self-respect, self-determination is a mark of great writing. The plot is uncomplicated in admirable contrast to the the complex characterization of Marsaili - and her supporting cast is well developed. The book is set in Scotland and there’s not a page that turns without the scent of highland heather or the sounds of bustling Glasgow. This exceptional debut of Ms. McArthur is a sign of things to come. A true talent has appeared on the scene.
I really enjoyed this book. Marsaili was a relatable character as she navigated life in an attempt to find her true vocation and love. Despite the obstacles Marsaili's strong and firey character shines through and she refuses to let anything stop her from forging a future for herself. As soon as I picked the book up I was swept away to Scotland and thoroughly enjoyed the description of the scenery. I couldn't put this book down and I know it is one that will stay with me.
This is such a lovely read, that follows Marsaili as she struggles with her life.
If you ask my mum where she move to if she could, she would always answer Scotland, so she will have loved the beautiful scenery that is described throughout this book. The Highlands are in stark contrast to the busy city life Marsaili has carved out for herself.
No matter what the scene the author does an excellent job of description, really drawing you in.
Marsaili has always wanted to be an actress but now she finds herself at a crossroads in her life. Her career hasn’t panned out the way she’d hoped but she feels that not doing it would be a failure. She feels as though she is stuck. Should she try again?
The writing in this book is excellent as we learn more about Marsaili and hope that things turn out for her.
The Back Up Plan is an absolutely gorgeous romance which I finished with a massive smile on my face.
Marsaili (rhymes with parsley, kind of) McKenzie is drifting through her life. She's an actress but has never actually got a breakthrough so she's working at a theatre in Glasgow. She's 33 and is starting to come round to the idea that a rethink of her life might be in order. I loved Marsaili even though she's a little prickly at times and has a tendency to put herself down. I thought the author portrayed her perfectly through her words with her fiery yet kind nature and her beautiful red curls.
Two things really made this a stand out story for me. The first is the way that Elsie McArthur writes the love story strand. Marsaili is, for a while, torn between Euan, a dashing soap star, and Will Hunter, her new boss at the theatre. No spoilers but I was desperate for her to come to her senses and end up with the right person, a man who might have to go on my list of crushes in fiction!
The second thing that I really loved was the setting. I'm sure Glasgow is perfectly nice but when Marsaili went back to her childhood home in the Scottish Highlands I was absolutely captivated. I love all things Highlands and Islands and there were contented oohs and aahs coming from my mouth. There's something so attractive about the thought of Marsaili's parents' croft, so cosy and welcoming.
McArthur has a lovely warmth to her writing. It felt like I was enveloped in a snug blanket, it was such a delight to read. I didn't want to let the characters go and I was completely captivated by this charming story. It's relatively light-hearted but it's not a fluffy, silly story. Actually, it's pretty much perfect.
I'm pleased to see there's a book two on the horizon. Not a sequel but a new story set on a Scottish island! I'm already excited. Based on my experience with The Back Up Plan it's going to be pure joy.
This is such a cosy, cup of tea and a blanket read! I absolutely loved how Elsie McArthur's warm writing style and quirky sense of humour really come through in her likeable and believable characters.
I love how much attention to detail there was surrounding Marselli's life and aspirations which meant I really understood and felt for her. The setting of Scotland was beautifully described and as someone who has worked many bar jobs myself, I could really relate to her work life at the theatre. Elsie McArthur writes her characters in a way that makes you feel as if you really know them from the first page.
The romance was done really well, with a good pace and wonderful interaction between herself and Will. I liked the ups and downs of this story as events don't always turned out as perfect as Marselli originally planned.
Overall an uplifting and wholesome romance with beautiful writing.
The Back-Up Plan takes an honest look at what it means to be mid-life and still feeling stuck in a lifestyle, a job that isn't necessarily a career, and how to cope with the possibility that things may not change. Unless you take action. This is a beautiful, enlightening, and fun read. Elsie McArthur made it possible for her readers to connect with her main character on many levels and for that, I am giving this book 5 stars. It is rare to find writers who can sum up life and life challenges this well, but Elsie has done exactly that in The Back-Up Plan. I cannot wait to read Love, on the Rocks.
This was a really good debut novel, about a girl called Marsaili who is a struggling actress. We see behind the scenes of the acting world and how it can change a person. I love that this book is set in Scotland as I have always wanted to go there. Elsie is very descriptive with her writing and makes you feel like you are there. I love all the names of people too, it is more interesting hearing more unique names than just the usual names. All Marsaili wants to do is become an actress, on the way she finds love, romance and a great bunch of characters. I look forward to the next book.
There were so many lines In this story I could relate to, “if it’s important to you it’s important to me” is what every girl wants her man to say right? And “whats for you will not pass you by” words that I live by with a slightly different twist. It was heart warming and made you root for the main character.
Fab storyline, kept me wondering and hoping that they'd get together. Struggled with reading Marsaili every time, even though it was explained it was pronounced Marsley as in Parsley, I still read it as Marsaylee 😁 Really enjoyable read.
Marsaili had always wanted to be an actress but on the other side of 30 and not having a gig in forever this plan isn't working out so well. Instead, she works the bar at a little theatre. But, at least she has a nice flat with her best friend, her parents are only a few hours by train away, and a handsome actor has started showing her attention. No, things aren't how she planned, but she's not quite ready to go to her back-up teaching plan yet. After-all, those who can't-teach...right? Except her best friend Isla is a teacher and shadowing with her is oddly rewarding...
I bought this book at the suggestion of the author. I have started and stopped this book multiple times before finally finishing it today. There isn't a thing wrong with this book, I just have to be in the mood for this type of contemporary romance. Unfortunately for this books place on my TBR that was not as frequently as it should have been. But, with it being Indie April and this being an Indie book I felt it was time to finish what I started.
Forbes is easily my favorite character in the book. I mean, how could you not love the gay best friend? Me and my gay bestie are currently not talking, so living vicariously through a character it is. Mine's not nearly as flamboyant as Forbes, who totally has a Lafayette from Sookie Stackhouse feel, but I love him all the same. He's just in the doghouse until he sobers up. Seriously though if you have read any of the Sookie Stackhouse books or even watched TrueBlood and loved Lafayette then you will love Forbes as much as I do!
Marsaili has an interesting love life, but most of the issues she faces are her own fault. I can't blame two of the guys on her. Cheating is nothing you can control, but the others? Yup she walked away and that's on her. The main love interest in this book has more patience than I would have in regards to her. Frankly I think he deserves better, but the heart wants what it wants.
Something that confused/bothered me in this book was she is portrayed as being an overly curvy girl in numerous places, but at one point while laying in bed her partner runs his hands along the bumps of her ribs. I will be the first to admit that I am not a small woman and overly curvy fits my body type pretty well. I guarantee touching my ribs you aren't going to be feeling any bumps other than where my gallbladder incision is and that doesn't count.
Ignoring that one spot that only stuck out to me by not being small the book was really interesting. As always I love a book set in Ireland, although this one is more focused on London Marsaili is from Ireland so it is close enough. We even get a few scenes of the book in her hometown, so I am counting it. I love the countryside, the men, the red hair, basically everything and hope to go there one day. The author does a great job depicting the scenes so that you feel you can see the seals playing in the water or Euan acting on the stage.
Thank you to Elsie McArthur for a copy of her debut novel - my thoughts are my own and not influenced by the gift. This is a 4.5 star read for me.
Firstly, I need to mention the stunning cover which fits the story perfectly (although I may be biased because my daughter is a redhead too). As someone who lives in landlocked Wiltshire in the middle of the global pandemic, a glimpse of the sea was much appreciated.
Marsaili (rhymes with parsley) grew up in rural Scotland with a loving family but is living and working in Glasgow looking for a dream acting role. This book follows how her life starts to change after meeting her baby niece for the first time.
I enjoyed the writing style of the story, full of detail to transport the reader to the theatre, a train, a wedding or a restaurant. The characters quickly became real and the story flowed over the pages. I was able to read the book over a quiet day at the weekend.
I love how Marsaili enjoys helping at her friend Isla's Primary School - nice to see a positive story about helping/working in a school.
If you enjoy reading books about family, friendship and romance, and would like a virtual visit to Scotland, then please read a copy of the Back Up Plan. I'm looking forward to reading Elsie's next book, which is released later this year.
Follow this up and down tale as it takes you on a wild roller coaster ride! I loved reading this story, even though I hate the ending. It was not how I would have liked the story to end, but the epilogue wraps up all the loose ends. So I have to give it at least Four Stars. This book was full of surprises and twists I wasn’t expecting. For a debut novel I am very impressed and I look forward to reading Elsie McArthur’s other book Love, On The Rocks. Reading about Scotland and getting a glimpse into their culture was truly fascinating. It has made me realize I want to read more books like this, and if you are looking into doing the same thing, I’d start with this author. The world she paints is interesting to watch grow before your eyes. She isn’t exactly a poet in that way, but she leaves enough open to bring your imagination to life. I find that I quite enjoy it. If you like a simple romance with lots of inner turmoil, then this is the perfect book for you!
It's always lovely to find a new author and this debut novel from Elsie McArthur is a warm-hearted and very readable romance novel.
It's not a genre I read a lot of, so for me, I went in not knowing what to really expect. What I discovered was a lovely warm, witty and enjoyable read.
Our main character, Marsaili, is drifting along some what in life, awaiting for an opportunity to kick start her acting career. However, it has been a number of years now and there haven't been that many jobs, well hardly any at all! Working in the bar of a local theatre, in the city of Glasgow, she lives in a rented house from her friend from university.
Originally from a small village in the Highlands, we also meet her family who still live there as she makes trips back home, and we are introduced to two new love interests, who couldn't be more different from each other if they tried.
For me a romance novel needs believable characters and the author really succeeds here. Warm, funny, sincere, I really became invested in Marsaili, wanting things to turn out well for her. The author also has a very natural style of writing and this really brought the story to life. It was delightful to lose myself for a couple of hours, in amongst the characters, each time I picked up the book and I really needed to find out if all turns out well. Not just for Marsaili but for everyone.
There is also some beautifully described countryside, even with the cold and wet weather of winter, and her trips back home have a wonderful sense of place. These parts really made it a book to curl up with.
A warm and friendly novel that is also a quick and engaging read. One to lose yourself in, especially at the moment.
Elise McArthur has given us a story of true love. I'm a modern day take on romance. I could and would recommend this easy read to anyone. It reaffirms your belief that love can win the day.
Escape to the highlands for a romantic getaway you will not forget!
The Back Up Plan: Giving Up? Or Moving On? Is a solid 4.5 stars in my humble bookish opinion. Full disclosure, I do not usually read romance novels, but I am so glad I read this one! It was the escapist, romantic adventure to the highlands of Scotland and beyond that I did not realise I needed until I was there.
What I love most about this book is the relatability. I am not saying I am Marsaili is me, or that I am her, but I do find her relatable as someone who is in their late twenties / early thirties. I think most of us reach a point (at some point) where things must change. I think it’s also fair to say many of us relate to the notion of setting out on a path and finding the destination is not what we thought it would be, or we simply change our minds along the way.
In a world where we have far more choice and options than previous generations, it can feel liberating and overwhelming all at the same time. Being in limbo is not ideal for anyone, of any age. But I think once a solution has been found or decision made, it can feel like a weight has been lifted.
I loved Marsaili’s stubbornness and the way she stayed true to herself. I felt she was misguided at times, putting her trust in the wrong people, but again, that is reality. I loved the setting(s) of the book. Simply put, I love Scotland and the Scots. I have friends in Edinburgh and Glasgow, so I felt that connection to the book too. For me, I will always love Scotland and the kindness extended to myself from Scottish people. There is an undeniable comradery. So, this book transported me to happy times, places, memories.
Within this book there were twists and turns reflective of real life, particularly of a life where people must rediscover themselves. Both Will and Marsaili are struggling with their identities but for different reasons. It is not explicitly stated but they are akin to two lost souls who find each other and give each other the time and space they need to grow into their new selves. The only question is whether they can reconcile their pasts to move forward together.
I am not going to giveaway any spoilers, but I will say the ending surprised me.
I can't decide if it's the book I dislike or simply the characters. I liked all of the secondary characters, even the two-timing cheat, better than I liked the main two characters. The insecurity and jumping to conclusions was so over the top, I considered putting the book down several times. (Would have been two stars because I finished it, however abruptly ending without resolution, only to resolve in an epilogue lost points for me.)
My second complaint is how the main character behaves like a teenager right up until the last page (pre-epilogue) when she suddenly spouts wisdom beyond her years. Like who swapped out the protagonist when I wasn't looking?
