It was a snooze fest that together with the clunky writing, weird dialogues and very far fetched storyline made me roll my eyes so hard, I was afraid they’d stay that way.

What’s worse, the first half of the book was your typical clean romance for naive little girls while the other part had some sex scenes, so that was already weird.

And if the mentioned sex scenes were any good, I’d give it 2 stars.
But they weren’t hence the rating.

There was absolutely nothing that I liked in this story and tbh I am quite amazed I managed to get this far.

Vicki Lewis Thompson has left Eagles Nest, but she hasn’t gone far. Her new series, The Buckskin Brotherhood, takes place in Apple Grove, Montana, formerly the home of Seth Turner (star of the last McGavin Brothers book). Matt Ramsey, Seth’s best friend, has worked at the Buckskin Ranch for years, long enough to get to know the regular guests quite well. In the case of one guest, maybe a little too well. Lucy Patterson and her parents have been coming to the ranch since she was a child, and six years ago, she proclaimed her love to Matt and told him she wanted to move to Montana to make a life with him. Although Matt also had feelings for Lucy, he let her think he didn’t because he thought she was better off pursuing a different kind of future. Lucy was left feeling rejected and a little foolish, and she never returned to the ranch again. Now, she’s booked the ranch for her week-long honeymoon. Matt’s feelings haven’t died, but he’s counting on the presence of Lucy’s new husband to remind him that she’s not someone he can ever have for his own. But when Lucy shows up alone having called off her wedding, Matt’s not sure how to handle being around Lucy without letting her know how he feels. And while Lucy is furious over the events that prompted her to run out on her wedding, seeing Matt makes her realize she never really stopped loving him. When she realizes that Matt wasn’t honest with her about his feelings years ago, all bets are off. Lucy isn’t about to let this opportunity to be with Matt slip away from her. But their lives are still so different. Can a real future be possible, or are they destined to lose each other again?

As a huge fan of the McGavin Brothers series, the release of this book was bittersweet for me. I’m always excited to read a new Vicki Lewis Thompson book, but I’ve been sad about saying good-bye to the McGavins and Eagles Nest. But after just a few paragraphs, it became clear to me that this new series is every bit as terrific as the McGavin Brothers. I adored Matt and Lucy, both as a couple and as individuals. They have a long history together, which I always enjoy in a romance novel, and Ms. Thompson does a great job giving enough information about their past that I felt very invested in their future. A common piece of writing advice is that good authors show and don’t tell (meaning an author uses the characters’ action to convey information rather than just telling the readers what they need to know). With Matt, his actions definitely show us who he is deep down and how much he cares about Lucy. Early on, there is a wonderful series of scenes where Matt goes shopping for Lucy because she took off without her luggage and literally only has what she has on, which is unfortunately her wedding dress. While gathering the essential items she’s going to need, Matt also takes the time to buy her a special present. The present he chooses for Lucy demonstrates how well he knows her and how much he truly cares for her. That’s the moment I fell absolutely in love with Matt’s character and, in doing so, was able to fully embrace this new series.

There are some similarities between the Buckskin Brotherhood series and the McGavin Brothers series. Henri, the ranch owner and Matt’s surrogate mother, obviously plays the role of Kendra in this series. She’s a strong woman who has lost her husband but is still thriving in a very male-dominated world. She also has her Babes on Buckskin group, which is reminiscent of Kendra’s Whine and Cheese Club. But there is a something a little edgier about Henri and the Babes on Buckskin than the women of Eagles Nest, and I enjoyed that subtle difference (although I can’t quite describe it). I’m really looking forward to getting to know the Babes better, especially Edna (aka Ed) because I can tell she’s going to be hysterical. While there are notable similarities between the two series, a huge difference is that the men in the Buckskin Brotherhood are not brothers by blood but brothers of the heart. I love that this group of men (and Henri and her late husband) have formed a family— a family with a bond just as strong as the McGavins. Sometimes the strongest families are made by the heart and not by blood. And that’s an important lesson.

I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy of this book from the author, which did not influence my review. I highly recommend Sweet-Talking Cowboy.

Welcome to the world of The Buckskin Brotherhood and the Babes on Buckskins!

If you loved the McGavin series or love cowboys then this is a must read.

Thompson has a skill for writing characters that feel like friends.

Cosy up with this book, some bubbly, some chocolate, and some country tunes and escape into the world Thompson so beautifully creates.

Looking forward to the rest of this series.

Not my jam. Very sweet and gentle romance but the conflict seemed REALLY overinflated. Maybe that's because they were pretty young and lately I can't seem to do characters in contemporaries much under 30.

Absolutely adored this book. Storyline was great and the characters were fun to read about, especially Matt and Lucy. It was a real uplifting story. I melted when Matt said ma'am - so smooth.
I loved it! 5☆

First in The Buckskin Brotherhood western romance series and revolving around the Buckskin Ranch. The couple focus is on Lucy Patterson and Matt Ramsey.

My Take
I do love these heartwarming stories. Matt's start in life until compassionate people took him in, and Lucy's fall from her hopes.

Those same people have taken in many over the years, helping them, supporting them. And when Lucy arrives after her wedding, she gets that same support in so many thoughtful ways.

It's a dance, of sorts, between Lucy and Matt. She declared her love for him six years ago; he ran. Now they're flirting with ideas and possibilities — dancing away, stepping forward. The challenge is maintaining that friendship without acting on their untold attractions. Ooh là là, the tension!

Thompson uses third person dual protagonist point-of-view from Lucy's and Matt's perspectives, so we get to hear all their fears and desires.

Poor Leo. The girl was only interested in sex. Lol, I do love the brouhaha when Matt gets a "fancy" haircut. The effect it has on the other boys is a crack-up.

I love Matt's ambition. He's more interested in doing what he loves than in working a sure thing. Poor Lucy, is doing the opposite.

Ohh, Orville's comment about each person having a unique gift is so very true. And I wanna cry . . . it's true that feeding your soul is necessary.

Sweet-Talking Cowboy has a moderate pace — mostly because the whiny angst between Lucy and Matt made me nuts. There was too much of that. But this story is definitely a buy for how amazing it is.

It's not so much about action, as it is about exploring the past and how it relates to now.

The Story
It's a disaster, and Lucy is so lucky to have made that reservation at the Buckskin Ranch, a place of many happy memories. And the support that Lucy is not expecting.

What would Charley do?

The Characters
Lucy Patterson stopped coming to the Buckskin six years ago. Now she works for an L.A. ad agency and hasn't drawn in years. Brianna had been her best friend and roommate. Kurt is the lying jerk.

Matt Ramsey, ahem, Mr I specialize in sperm, has been working at the Buckskin for the past eleven years. Betsy was his old truck. He bought Thunderbolt last year; he's already stood to stud to Penny and Sassafras.

The Buckskin Ranch is . . .
. . . a combination of breeding operation and guest ranch. Henrietta "Henri" Fox, a former professor in animal science at Purdue, is the owner. Charley is her deceased husband. Seth is their son who just got married to Zoe. Lucy had sketched a drawing of Charley and Henri on King and Prince, a gelding buck. The divorced Kate is the cook. Millie Jones is helping out with the waitressing. Jake Lassiter cooks for the hands. Other hands include CJ, the movie-star gorgeous Leo, Rafe, and Nick; they consider themselves the Buckskin Brotherhood. The horses include Lucky Ducky, Aristotle is Henri's favorite, Guinevere (Aristotle's dam) is a wonderful brood mare, and Jasmine is a sweet bay. Guests include Don and Suzie Jefferson from Iowa.

You could pick apples at the Apple Grove. I think maybe Apple Grove is the city? Hiram owns the Apple Barrel that sells the apples. Orville hangs out by the stove giving advice. Aspen Grove General is the hospital. Albert is about the only ride-sharing service. Candace Aronson has been a "buddy" with Matt. The Choosy Moose is the local bar and is owned by Ben Malone — he's got a crush on Henri. Gertie's Fountain is a diner with a family tradition; Sarah is the current Gertie's real name. Scamp had been a family kitten. The Denim Junction is a clothing store. Logan's, which sells leather goods and handmade saddles, is run by Jared now. Beth owns the Racy Lace Boutique, and it's just what it sounds like, *hubba, hubba*. John is the local barber. Jerry is the new guy at the auto parts store. He's . . . boring. Merlin is a goof.

The Babes on Buckskins are . . .
. . . a group of Henri's friends who love to ride and embrace environmental causes. They include Miss Josette (Pierre is her horse) who co-owns the salon, Très Beau, with Eva; Peggy, who has taken up Lucy's habit of mis-matched socks (she rides Dust Devil); Pam runs a painting crew (and rides Latte); Anastasia "Red" (she rides Caramel); and, the eighty-five-year-old Edna, a.k.a. "Ed", who's a famous barrel rider (Muffin is a sixteen-year-old veteran). Teague is Edna's ranch hand. Ron is Peggy's husband; Lee, a fireman, is Pam's.

That new haircut is having an effect with Candace, Mary Jane, and Shannon.

Zane McGavin, Seth's cousin, founded Raptors Rise in Eagle's Nest ( A Cowboy's Strength , The McGavin Brothers 1).

L.A.
Jennifer is the person with whom Lucy has an interview. It's also where Lucy has her aha moment.

The Cover and Title
The cover has a gorgeous Matt, in his sheepskin jacket and green plaid flannel shirt, tipping his deep brown hat to us. In the background is a V of mountains with Matt centered between them with a dawn sky of pale, pale pink and a deep teal. At Matt's right elbow is Thunderbolt behind a wood fence, churning up the snow into a dust that rises up in front of Matt to his waist. The title starts just above Matt's waist in that same deep teal. The series information is just below it. Below that is the author's name in an embossed-looking gold. Below that is an info blurb in teal.

The title is all about a Sweet-Talking Cowboy who has such compassion.

A sweet cowboy romance.

A sexy charming cowboy give a second chance with the woman he turned down years before. Another wonderful cowboy tale by the author, who always delivers a well developed group of characters and an interesting plot.

SWEET TALKING COWBOY is a standalone read with a happy ending. There are a few sexy scenes but nothing real graphic. No colorful language. The story is set on the Buckskin Ranch where Lucy vacationed every year since she was 4. At 19 she tells Matt she is in love with him and wants to stay with him. He turns her down. He has nothing to offer. All he has is a job. She leaves broken hearted and doesn't return to the ranch for 6 years.

Lucy is in her wedding dress waiting to walk down the aisle when she discovers the groom and her best friend getting it on in a dark room. She gathers up the skirt of her dress, wearing tennis shoes with sequins, and takes off out of the church. At the airport she catches an earlier flight and leaves for the ranch where she was supposed to spend her honeymoon.

Matt is waiting for her and when he sees her alone he hopes for a second chance with her. He has never stopped loving her. It may not work out, she lives in L.A. and he lives on the ranch but he is going to try. This is a fun adventure as these two try to work out a plan to spend the rest of their lives together. It is fun, tear-jerking, and loving. I enjoyed it and I definitely recommend it.

I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 8/17/2021

I'm so happy to have a new VLT cowboy series! This one begins right in the middle of the action. Lucy is on her groomless honeymoon, and Matt has to decide if he can continue to bury his feelings for her. Because these two have known each other for years, they already have a friendship established. They reconnect immediately and fall into teasing and joking pretty quickly, and it is hilarious. The whole beauty salon thing was so funny! You feel the chemistry right away, and it is so hard to watch them fight it. I was fully invested in their story by the end of chapter one, so I might have been yelling, "Just kiss her!" at Matt for a bit.
Matt is a true gentleman who needs to learn a bit about his own worth. He treats Lucy with respect and genuine care. It was very romantic. Lucy is a lovely person who is trying to do the best she can in a tough situation. She is very smart, and I knew she would get it all figured out in the end.
I loved both of these characters, and I also enjoyed meeting all the new characters on and around Buckskin Ranch. The cowboys (the Brotherhood in the series title) are all swoony, and the Buckskin Babes are awesome older women that the Brothers treat with respect and fun. There is a lot of potential here, and I am excited to learn more in future books.

This is the first book in this series and I believe that they can be read as standalone stories. This is Matt and Lucy’s story.

Matt and Lucy knew each other from when her family would spend summers at the ranch. Lucy loved Matt and told him one summer, but he didn’t return her feelings. Now she is supposed to be returning to the ranch a married woman, but Matt isn’t ready for what she has in store for him.

Matt belongs on the ranch and knew he had to let Lucy go all those years ago. Now that she is back and not married he struggles with hiding his true feelings for her.

Lucy works for a marketing firm, but her cheating ex works at the same firm and she has to start over. Before she does, she decides to take her honeymoon to the place that always gave her peace and joy. Her only challenge…her feelings for Matt never dimmed.

There were parts of this story I enjoyed, but I wanted to like this more than I did. Although Lucy had every right to forget her fiancé, she did it very quickly and fell right back in love with Matt. Their connection was great, but I just did not connect with the overall storyline. The endings of this author’s books also come very quickly and you don’t get anytime to enjoy the couple together. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really liked this new series. Buckskin Ranch sounded like a fun place to visit. It's full of sexy, charming, hardworking cowboys, beautiful horses, and Henrietta Fox, also known as Henri, who owns the ranch. There are other wonderful characters too.

I enjoyed this story of Lucy Patterson who had just called off her wedding because she found her fiance with her roommate just before the wedding. She had decided to spend her "honeymoon" at the Buckskin Ranch anyways. Lucy had spent time at the ranch since she was four, although she had missed a number of recent years. She was in love with Matt Ramsey when she was in her late teens and she had not seen him since she told him she wanted to be with him.

I enjoyed the chemistry between the two although they both tried to ignore it because she lived and worked in LA and Matt worked on the ranch. I was surprised by the ending and I am so glad that this was only the first book in the series because it means I have more books to look forward to. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.

If you enjoyed this author’s McGavins Brothers stories as much as I did, you are in for a treat with this new series.
This first one gives us Lucy Patterson and Matt Ramsey.
During her youth, Lucy and her family visited Buckskin Ranch many summers . There she met a cowboy who had enchanted her. When she was 19 years old , she declared her love and he turned her down. Breaking both their hearts.
SIx years later she’s back, in her wedding dress not for her honeymoon as planned but to escape her cheating fiancee.
Who picks her but, but Matt . No longer a boy, but a man and a true cowboy.
Will they get their HEA, or will once again, each go their separate ways, this time for good?
The story was at times sweet, at others bittersweet and always touching. You’ll get to meet the interesting characters of the town, as well as other cowboys in Buckskin that are likely to get their own stories in the near future. I am looking forward to those.
I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

The first in a new series by Ms. Thompson. I found this book to be funny even in a bad situation. Very family orientated. Good friends who helped.
It’s been six years since Lucy Patterson has been in Apple Grove, and the Buckskin Ranch. The place she loves, and gave her heart away to a man who never returned the feelings. The plan was to come back with another man her husband, but things didn’t turn out that way.

Matt Ramsey was not expecting Lucy to be by herself when he picked her up. There she was coming at him. Six years since he’s seen her, and it didn’t go well. One kiss now and he couldn’t let it change anything. He would be lying to himself and Lucy. There were definitely sparks. It was up to them to decide how they wanted it to go. She didn’t live there.

Buy the book and see what happens.

Looking forward to more books in this series. Great characters.

Yeah, A Brand New Series!
Lucy returns to Buckskin Ranch for what should have been her honeymoon sans bridegroom. Meeting Matt again it quickly becomes apparent to Lucy that maybe her and Kurt’s connection wasn’t what it should have been but a long term relationship with Matt is no more possible now than it was 6 years previous, or is it?
If you loved the McGavins of Eagles Nest then you must give this new series a try. It has all the VLT hallmarks - small town coziness, ranch life, endearing characters, cowboy manners/loyalty and the potential to fall in love with a family (by choice, rather than blood). Can’t wait to read the next in the series.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is an awesome start to a new series! VLT has penned a wonderful new book full of characters that you can care about. I absolutely loved the McGavin Series and was sorry to see it end. I'm happy that Vicki is going to give us glimpses of the Eagle's Nest family in this series.

Lucy is quite a character. She's sweet, spunky, and full of life. Matt is a true cowboy; honorable, sweet, strong, and sexy. The Buckskin Brotherhood has some great guys in it, and I'm excited to read their stories as well. There are so many parts in this book that made me smile. :D I recommend this book!

I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily giving my honest review.

I'm in love with this new series already. Matt is definitely fits the bill and convinced me that he is a sweet-talking cowboy. I love that they get a another chance to figure out if it's meant to be. Relationships are never easy so their new beginning has a few kinks but they put all their cards on the table from the jump and just roll with it. Love this story, the characters are easy to relate to and their heartwarming plight kept me glued to the pages. Can't wait to read the next one is the series. This authors' cowboy stories are guaranteed to be a pleasure to read. I was provided a free copy and am voluntarily reviewing but it was so good that I purchased a copy as well.

" Luck or Fate that you`re in the right place at the right time and you have the good sense to recognize the person who`s the one". - That’s what this book is all about.

Why is it that we always tend to complicate things?
Put our feelings aside?
Why don't we just take the opportunity when we have it?

Matt: "I shouldn`t be doing this".
Lucy: "Do it anyway".
- Ahh ... Thanks for these lines!
On the other hand, Lucy would have escaped one bullet, but a second would have hit both of them right in the heart. Sometimes it is only a very fine line to miss the happiness we have together. These two made it really exciting at the end.

The Buckskin Brotherhood series 10 books so far. i read "Baby Daddy Cowboy" (book 3, free to me) & "Sweet Talking Cowboy" (book 1, apparently i found this one for free after book 3. i just found 2 others from her collection that are free as well? go check yourself) i will say i am kind of giggling over these titles. i mean no dislike (hate) just being honest of over the somewhat humorous titles. contemporary western. holiday romance. western romance. i am really enjoying VLT's writing style. i will hope to read more from her soon. i love a good western. and i am always wishing i could have a place in Montana. wouldn't it be awesome to see it during the snow time? that would be way awesome.

Sweet-Talking Cowboy (The Buckskin Brotherhood #1) by Vicki Lewis This is the first book in a new series...Lucy Patterson showed up at the Buckskin Ranch with out her groom, Matt Ramsey’s is glad to see her but Six years ago she gave him her heart. He sent her away because he thought his was wrong for her then. Well they still both care and can't keep their hands or lips off each other...there is a time limit she has to leave...I laughed, I cried, and laughed some more...I love the Brotherhood and was glad for their HEA. Can't wait for more...

Excellent romance!

I couldn't put it down! I read well into the wee morning hours. Matt and Lucy's chemistry is believable. I loved all the characters in the book! I want to move to Apple Grove or at least vacation at The Buckskin.

Lucy was in love with Matt when she was a teenager staying at the ranch on family summer vacations. Lucy returns after being gone for six years because she thought that her love was unrequited. When she finds out that he feels the same, will that make things easier or harder when she leaves in a week to go back to her life in L.A.?

A sweet and nicely clean sort of second chance romance story.
No dragged out fully descriptive sex scenes which was a nice change. Just sweet loving with some slight heat.
My only complaint was it dragged at times, mainly due to the constant negativity from Matt about being together.
The answer to their problem seemed obvious but Lucy felt her drawing was not good enough, even though everyone said otherwise.
Loved the Buckskin Babes. Great to see mature women living life.
Will I read the others in this series, yes but only if I can get them on sale.

I am absolutely delighted that Vicki has begun a new series. This first book is classic Vicki. Characters you WANT to get their HEA, love scenes that manage to be so tender and sweet and HOT all at the same time, and dialogue that is at times laugh out loud funny. I want to live in the towns she creates. I want to be friends with the characters she creates. I can’t wait to see who falls in love in the next book in this series.

WOW what a way to start a NEW series and yet tie it to an old favorite one - Vicki is so good at revisiting the characters that we have all come to love!! This starts out really well and it grabbed me and was too hard to put down until I finally read about their HEA - Can NOT wait to read about more of these characters in their own books! I was excited to read a beta version and freely leave my opinion of this book!

Matt Ramsey works for the Buckskin ranch where Lucy Patterson has been coming since both were in their teens. Lucy runs away from her pending marriage when she finds her fiance cheating with her best friend. She flies back to the Buckskin ranch to get away and heal her heart only to be confronted with her first love, Matt. I absolutely couldn't put this book down! A sweet cowboy, second chance at love romance!

Great second chance romance

VickiLT is one of my very favorite western romance authors. This story about Matt and Lucy was a good standalone with a happy ending. Only problem I had (and this is silly) is that while Matt is sweet talking, he says yes ma'am to Lucy too much! I was waiting for her to ask him to quit calling her ma'am, but she never did. Can't wait to read all the others in the series!

This read was a rollercoaster of ups and downs, with crushes from years ago becoming the fuel. I really liked the Buckskin Brotherhood, their code of conduct was a great way to honor their former boss & caretaker when they were troubled youth, who were now men. The sex in this book, really wasn't necessary. I ended skipping pages, then putting the Kindle away, then coming back. Reading through the book, then finishing it, seemed like a chore.

While I enjoyed this story and the characters, there were times I felt the whole premise of the brotherhood was a tad childish and leaning more toward a Christian Romance. But then the spices got thrown in and it began to come together, picking up speed and drawing me back in, until the ending. It was rushed. It felt as though the author had hit her word limit and needed to wrap it up. I'm still giving it 4 stars for the overall entertainment value.

Not clean but not raw either.

Years of two week family summer vacations at the Buckskin Guest Ranch saw Lucy growing up to a 19 year old lady, every year growing more in love with the young boy/man Matt. But he knew his life and her life were miles apart, so he hurt her six years ago and Lucy never came back. To boast her new man to Matt she books her honeymoon at the Buckskin Ranch, only to show up alone in her wedding dress.
