Knight's Fire
Stories tell of great fire-breathing beasts large as castles, fierce and deadly, capable of magicks that no human can match. The Kingdom of Kentaine once allied itself with the dragons of old, but eventually, the dragons were lost to time and fell into legend.
Sir Gawain, First Knight of the Realm, is tasked by his older sister the Queen to travel to the edges fo their kingdom, where a beast is flaming villagers and has the locals ready to form a mob and hunt it down themselves. His mission is to find the dragon, stop the violence, and do what he needs to maintain the peace.
His journey puts him in the heart of a confrontation with the dragon, but instead of saving the villagers, it is the dragon that needs rescuing. Zephyr, a fire dragon and an escaped slave, needs protection, time to heal, and a chance at a life full of hope.
Gawain can do no less than offer his sword, his shield, and his heart. Evil is hunting Zephyr, and it will not stop until it has reclaimed its prize.

Well that was quite the lovely read!
If you like an Arthurian vibe with the promise of a dragon who can shift into all sorts of creatures (including a beautiful human male) then this is a complete no brainer.
Ensue knights in shining armor led by the dashing Gawain (who is quite the dreamboat if I do say so myself), a dragon who must be saved (not killed), and a really unlikely but sweet sexy romance between these two, and you have a fabulous start to a new series!
I haven’t found an author who can bring the wonderful dragon to life as much as Himes does (please see her Beacon Hill Sorcerer series) and she doesn’t fail us here. Zephyr is quite the endearing adorable creature whose life has been nothing but pain and despair. When Gawain saves him from further torment, it allows Zephyr to finally grow into his own and heal. As these two travel back to Gawain’s home they establish an unbreakable bond.
Again, a wonderful set up full of all the fantastical magic and wonder of such a setting. I can only hope Himes brings us the sequel soon!

I really dislike this author's tendencies to abandon series..

OMG, this was freaking adorable!! I really loved this one, and I’m sad it’s a novella and I have to wait for the next book.
Gawain is a knight, he’s also the queen’s brother, but he considers himself mostly a knight. When he hears there is trouble with a dragon in a village at the edge of the kingdom, he and several knights travel as fast as they can to prevent blood spilling.
Gawain hopes they can stop the villagers in time and that no one will hurt the dragon. A dragon is a magical creature and should be cherished and protected, not killed.
Gawain and his knights are just in time to stop the villagers from attacking the small dragon, who is hiding in a cave. It does seem that the dragon is hurt, and severely malnourished.
Zephyr has finally escaped. He has been held captive by an evil mage for many years. He is an adult now, but still very small due to his treatment.
When the knights come, he doesn’t trust them, except for Gawain, that knight smells delicious and looks so kind.
Zephyr comes out of hiding and finally lets Tristan (a mage, and Gawain’s best friend) heal him, even though he doesn’t trust the mage. But Gawain says he’s a friend, so Zephyr agrees to be tended to.
Gawain decides they should stay in the camp for a while to let Zephyr heal, and then set out back to the castle, where Zephyr can decide what he wants to do.
Gawain isn’t sure what Zephyr means when he says that Gawain is now his, but the dragon is simply too cute to resist, so Gawain doesn’t object when Zephyr wants to cuddle or crawl in his lap.
When the camp is attacked and Tristan is trying to heal the wounded, he needs Zephyr’s help. But Zephyr can’t help him when he’s a dragon, so he calls on his magic and shifts into a human.
With Zephyr now in human form, there’s nothing stopping Gawain from getting closer to the small sweet dragon…
Zephyr was just ADORABLE!! He kept hiding when he was feeling insecure, and that was just so cute! As if no one would see a dragon hiding his face behind a pillow.
I also loved the other characters. I guess most of them didn’t have much of a role so far, but I can’t wait to see if Tristan gets his own story too.
This was just the cutest book, and I can’t wait for the sequel!

Himes never fails, and she's on to another winner with this series. It's absolutely delightful! Cute and sweet with fantastic world and character building, and don't even get me started on Zephyr 💖💖
The insta love between Zephyr and Gawain was perfect and believable. Gah - Zephyr is just the sweetest dragon .... all "My Gawain" from the get go. I love that there was no push and pull, no angst, no silly buggers and I can't wait to see where the author is going to take their story.

If you loved Tris in my book The 5th Gender, you will love Zephyr the dragon who accidentally on purpose becomes a man who falls in love with the knight sent to rescue him. A light and bubbly book, no weighty matters here, brief plot and not too much angst or tension. Very enjoyable.

I wish I could give this book 100 stars... I love it that much. Zephyr is the one factor in this book that makes it rise far far above so many others. Zephyr the dragon is sweet, adorable, loving and yes... sexy as hell. Every time he says "My Gawain" my heart gives a flutter. On top of creating one of the best characters ever Ms. Himes has created a story that's a tale as old as time and enthralling as well! I CANNOT wait till the next book is out!

This was my first dragon shifter story and overall I enjoyed it. Mostly because of Zephyr, he is the cutest and deserves all the stars.
I liked him and Gawain together, although the insta-love felt more believable coming from Zephyr than Gawain. The one thing I personally didn’t enjoy and found a bit cringy were the sex scenes. Mainly because Zephyr seems so innocent to me and in my mind he is a dragon, no matter what shape he’s taken.
The audiobook was really good. It was actually the first book narrated by Joel Leslie that I managed to listen to. I liked his voice in this story and the accents he did were great.

Adorable!

Why did I round down? I’ll get to that...
This was simply a no angst, adorable prince-rescues-dragon story! Zephyr, a young adult dragon escaped from captivity and found himself wounded and hunted by mobbing villagers. In charges the prince and his knights to save Zephyr.
Ahhh, sweet, sweet Zephyr is what truly makes this tale lovely. He is simply precious! He instantly claims the prince as his. Of course the prince doesn’t know what it means.
On the way back to the safety of the castle, the rescue party is besieged by various mal-doers. But hey, this is a happy tale and all arrive safely back home.
Now, this is where I decided to round down (adorableness of Zephyr aside). By this point, the prince and dragon (in human form) have had sexy times. The dragon has declared him as “his.” Prince is late to the game when he finally realizes that Zephyr has claimed him as his mate. Instantly, the prince—SPOILER ALERT—declares he loves him and wants to marry him. It’s been about 3 days since the rescue.
I just didn’t buy the feels from the prince. From the dragon? Sure. I’ll even forgive the fact that the prince is the first human to treat him with kindness after being abused for most of his life. Of course he’s going to imprint on him. And let’s not forget that he’s a different species—anything goes.
But the feelings the prince had? They felt more like caring for a pet or a youngster—sex aside because ewww, just ewww on that one.
Should you read this? Yes! Zephyr ❤️❤️❤️❤️. All the love for our little dragon.
Will I read the next one? Of course! Royal wedding and evil mages lurk about!

Bursting with adventure and (interspecies) romance, this fantasy tale was some damn easy reading – the kind that put a smile on my face and made my head full of sweet thoughts and good vibes.
This story is set in a medieval-type fantasy world, with ruling kingdoms and brave knights and a sentient dragon that is just too god damn adorable for words!
The whole thing had an Arthurian feel to it, and not just because of the place and setting and all the knights running around, but because half the characters shared names with legends of Arthurian lore, which was an interesting choice and perhaps the initial inspiration of the story.
Instead of Arthur and his sword, we follow Gawain – First Knight of the Realm and Prince and heir to the throne his sister sits upon – as he, and an assembly of his best knights, go on a mission to the far borders of the Kentaine kingdom to rescue an injured dragon from a band of bloodthirsty villagers who wish to see it dead.
Zephyr, the dragon, is scared, hurt, and kind of fed up with humans trying to do him harm. He’s spent decades in the captivity of a mad mage and now, after daringly making an escape from his captor, finds himself in a new land, seriously injured and unable to reach upon his magics until he’s healed. He’s in desperate need of assistance and thankfully Gawain and his loyal knights arrive just in time to disperse the villagers and rescue Zephyr from any further harm.
Zephyr can communicate with humans and he makes an immediate connection with Sir Gawain. The trust and care shared between the dragon and the human he now calls his comes fast and true. They can’t deny the special bond between them – one that is enhanced with a sexual component once Zephyr heals enough to use his magic (in a great time of need) to change into human form.
Zephyr and (his) Gawain’s love can probably be classified as insta-love, but given the genre and the circumstances of the story the quickness of their feelings really didn’t bother me. Nor was I bothered by the fact that Zephyr is inherently a dragon and therefore the two were of different species. It wasn’t like they were doing anything sexual when they were in their true forms, so I just went with the flow and enjoyed their adoration for each other, which was less of a physical thing and more of a soul-deep thing.
I absolutely adored the representation of Zephyr. He was sweet and guileless and had an openness to his heart and mind that was both heart-warming and inspiring. Think Milo from Eli Easton’s Howl At the Moon series – in fact, the whole thing was very reminiscent of that series, just trading the contemporary world for a medieval one, and switching out dogs for dragons. I have no doubt fans of one series will enjoy the other. Just sayin'.
This particular story was left very open-ended, most importantly with the threat to Zephyr’s life still an ongoing problem. There was also clearly more story to tell in terms of love-story development and the reaching of a true happy ending, but thankfully that’s what sequels are for. I very much look forward to continuing Zephyr and Gawain’s story at some point down the line.

Charming.
That’s the first word that comes to mind here.
Adorable and cute are not very far behind.
And that’s mostly because of Zephyr, the young dragon at the centre of this book.
He reminded me a bit of Toothless from ‘How to Train a Dragon’, but with more human elements. He made me smile and chuckle, and his churring and purring and puffing just made me swoon.
And of course, he has the same effect on Gawaine who comes to save him. The man has no chance against all that innocent trust and childlike charm.
For me the writing (loved the world building!) and the story itself felt very fairy-tale like, in a good way, I might add.
A vulnerable young hmmmm…. creature gets rescued by a knight in shining armour on a noble stead and falls in love with its savior. It’s a story you might have dreamt of yourself when you were a little girl.
Well apart from the interspecies sex. LOL.
That is something totally different, and it's hot and sweet and lovely.
Thank God, Zephyr can shape-shift! But the fact that he and Gawaine are different species can't be denied. I hope this will become more of a topic in the next books, because I'd love to see it further explored.

Yes, yes, yes! S.J. Himes does it again! I absolutely loved it. It's no secret I love her writing. The Wolfkin Saga is probably at the top of my favorite shifter list. So, here she comes with a new series of a knight and his dragon. What's not to love?
Poor Zephyr. He's been imprisoned most of his life by an evil mage. Sweet and innocent of most things human and dragon, he needed someone to love him. Gawain is just the knight for the job. He instantly is connected to Zephyr. There's sweet and sexy moments between the two. And Zephyr saying "My Gawain", just melts my heart ❤️ . I like how Himes can write and "innocent" character without making them too childlike so it seems like the other mc is taking advantage.

This author never disappoints.
Here we have Sir Gawain or Prince Gawain to give him his true title. Tales of dragon sightings have reached the queen (Gawain’s sister) and she sends him to investigate.
What he finds is Zephyr. A weak and injured dragon under attack from villages. Gawain soon realises it’s Zephyr that needs help. A trust, friendship and attraction grows between the two and it’s beautiful.
I loved all the characters especially Zephyr. He’s so adorable and I can’t wait for more.

I’m actually a bit ‘scared’ to review this. As I really don’t want to use my “excellent communication skills” (excellent obviously in the joking sense here) to maybe say anything stupid enough that would make someone interpreted anything I say in anything other than that THIS story = Really great.
First of. I’ve read dragons in my MF days. To me, dragon shifters are all shit-kicker boots and bad-ass power. They take charge and they are not vulnerable, well, they won’t admit to it anyway.
This was totally something NEW in my limited experience. New and Fresh in a very good way.
I wanted to smother Zephyr in all things good. Hugs, Love... well obviously you can’t help but adore him! He’s the sweetest thing and when he’s all shy he makes me feel like...
Yeah Yeah I love him. It’s not a secret.
Knight Sexy-and-in-charge-Gawain also played his part very well for that matter. What’s not to love about a strong guy with a big heart? Oh, and of course THE HAIR. I’m thinking shampoo add every time Zephyr remarks on how it blows in the breeze. *giggles*
Safe to say I totally gave up and went with it. It’s sweet and incredibly cute and I didn’t like the little threats coming their way one bit, because I just want Disney Ending for these two okay?
Word of advice, Zephyr is full of surprises. He might be all shy and adorable but, he is not a pushover. He turns out to be so much more that Gawain’s “Little Dragon”. Ps. Again, LOVE the hair. (And the scales!)
Looking forward to more "My Gawain", "Nesting" "Sent Marking" and MAGIC! ect.
Oh and I can do with a book about some side characters. I'm thinking Tristan. Wink Wink

Seems like the perfect timing: with the temperature going up to nearly 30°C for the first time this year I got the first summer read on my Kindle. Couldn't have started at a better time, sitting outside a coffee shop in the shade and let the authors lure me into a light fantasy tale with knights and mages and dragons. There's nothing complicated, no angst, possible conflicts are solved when they come up and darker storylines like the captivity were shortly told in hindsight and result only in off-page nightmares. There's enough action to keep me reading while I enjoy the sun and my cappuccino - and there's Zephyr. Knight's Fire wouldn't be the same without that dragon, maybe not even that remarkable. At first he's shy and vulnerable after his escape but with each day feeling more and more safe in Gawain's presence he becomes more playful and adorably possessive of his knight. He strongly reminds me of Eroch from A History of Trouble - just much bigger and supposedly more adult but equally cute and with a bratty streak. Couldn't not love him ... but (and unfortunately it's a big But for me) I could never imagine him as mature or at least adult enough as the authors liked me to believe ... so I had a difficult time believing even a fledgling romance between the strong and serious Gawain and the young, playful Zephyr, who's fixation on the kingdoms powerful first knight might be more a result of his traumatic experience than his possessiveness as a dragon. So for me the final I-Love-You's came completely out of the left field. As much as the authors kept me entertained with Zephyr's shenanigans and coming to terms with his new reality they didn't prepare me to feel such a deep affection between those 2.

I must thank Susan again for suggesting me this book, it was the cutest!
Zephyr was such a sweet little dragon, he deserved to be protected and cared for, and luckily after years of captivity and seeing his magic being drained and his mother die, he finally escaped and found Prince Gawain. The Knight and Prince, was a gentle and kind person and gave to his Dragon all the attentions he needed and the confort he deserved. And their first night as lovers made me smile, I was happy for Zephyr, because he was able to have all his first times with the man he loved. He was so innocent but at the same time sure of what he wanted. I really wished that the book was longer, but this is a series so I can understand, and I need the next book asap xD
Anyway, there are still many things we need to understand and many questions that need an answer. For example I'd like to know where Zephyr's siblings are, because we know only him and his mother were taken, and then I'd like to understand, or find out, if the sweet dragon was right in saying that also male dragons can lay eggs, and that dragons usually lay them when they want or to better say wish for, because I'm sure his and Gawain kids would be beautiful and cute. I'd also like to know if after becoming mates, they now share the same life span....

This was such a sweet story! I loved Zephyr and Gawain together. All the characters were likable, and I am curious about them. Will they get a story too?
What I really liked about this novella was the fact that it was not your typical shifter romance. Here Zephyr is a real dragon who can transform into many shapes including that of a human. So Gawain did fall in love with a real dragon! Gawain is a knight of royal descent. He is honorable, kind and patient. When he comes to rescue a dragon from murderous villagers, he meets a sentient being with feelings and thoughts. Zephyr is such a sweetheart. He feels connected to Gawain right away. He sees what kind of person he is and knows he can trust him. I really liked Zephyr's innocence and how he viewed the world. Even though he was kind and affable around all the knights, when they were threatened he became a fierce protector.
There was humor, steamy and sweet moments, a bit of fighting and magic. This was a very light-hearted story, and it was just the right one for me! I recommend it! You can never miss with Ms Himes!

Cute story. It was exactly what I expected and what I needed at the moment.
I liked the main characters Gawain and Zephyr and the relationship between them. I loved how Zephyr gradually gains strength and begins to become more and more himself. Especially that he shows strength of character and is not only a quiet, shy boy. He can fight for what he wants. Even though it is only a short story, the author managed to show his transformation quite well.
I'm not a big fan of love at first sight and here too things were going a little too fast for me. Zephyr's reactions were fine for me, but Gawain's feelings were a little less comprehensible. But overall it wasn't that much of a problem.
I knew that this book was a novella, but I didn't expect it to be a uncompleted story. I thought the next book would be with a different pair of characters (although that may still happen). But it surprised me that the main plotline didn't find the end in this story. I was probably the most disappointed with that.
It was a pretty good story overall.

Um, I absolutely adored this and already can't wait for the second installment of this.
Zephyr and Gawain had a connection from the offset, and were both incredibly sweet and kind, and their love shined throughout the pages, basically from the get go. And I can't even say it was insta-love exactly, because Zephyr was a dragon at first and Gawain was not attracted to a dragon in dragon form. But they did have an affection for each other quickly, that grew and grew as the book went on.
I've never read a dragon shifter book before and this was an amazing introduction to this type of shifter romance. The only thing that made this different than other shifter romances - with like werewolves and werebears and so on and so forth - was that Zephyr is a dragon first and can shift into human form, not the other way around. His true form is a dragon, but he can talk as a dragon and is more than just an animal.
Gawain is the prince of the country they're in, his sister being the Queen and asking/ordering him to go to a village where reports of a dragon sightings have been given, and to deal with the dragon if it is hurting people, or help the dragon if not.
Turns out, Zephyr is just defending himself, because dragons haven't been seen in their country for over a century, so all people have are legends about dragons and all they see is a big, fire breathing dragon and think the worst and try to attack him, even though he hasn't do anything to them. Also, Zephyr is recently escaped from captivity where he was abused and tortured for who knows how long - all we know is that he was taken when he was still a youngling and is now a young adult in dragon years, however long that is.
Gawain is the first person to show him absolute kindness and Zephyr trusts him almost instantly and becomes attached, and Gawain sees Zephyr for who he is - a kind, sweet dragon who has been abused.
They're starting to fall for each other, although there are some communication issues as they're different species and when Zephyr says Gawain is "mine" he means mate, but Gawain didn't understand that. But when Zephyr shape shifts into human form to help after an attack - which he can't do as a dragon - Gawain notices how attractive his human form is, and it allows Gawain to understand he has feelings for Zephyr.
Also, okay, hot damn, the sex between these two was scorching, I loved it.
I just loved this whole story, and I can't wait for more and to see these two grow closer and more in love.

Oh, this is such a sweet and lovely story, it gave me such a nice warm, fuzzy feeling while reading it. Zephyr and Gawain connect right away and there is bond you can feel between them from the start. Zephyr feels such happiness and safety with Gawain for the first time in his life, and it isn’t long before he claims Gawain as his own. And Gawain returns the feelings, adoring the dragon and wanting to keep him safe.
S.J. Himes gives us a bit of an unusual spin here in that while Zephyr ultimately does shift into human form, he is not a human/dragon shifter and there is no duality to him as we commonly find in shifter lore. Zephyr is very much a dragon, who just happens to have the ability to shift physical forms, human being one of them. I love that Gawain first connects with Zephyr emotionally in dragon form and he is clear that if Zephyr never wants to appear human, he is fine with that. I loved the unconditional acceptance Gawain shows Zephyr for however he wants to be. Of course, mating requires matching bodies and once Zephyr experiences that, being human has its perks. While Zephyr is at times a bit naive about things and doesn’t always know what is socially appropriate to say in public, it is clear that he is sentient and mature enough to understand his relationship with Gawain, including physical intimacy (something Gawain is sure to clearly confirm). Overall, these guys are just super sweet together with a nice bit of sexy, and the bond between them is strong right from the start.

A terrific beginning!
Told from a dual POV, this Paranormal Romance between a knight, and heir to the throne, and the dragon who has escaped from a life in captivity and pain, is absolutely delightful. There's some heat (in human form), some action, and ends happily, but without the main baddie ever being revealed. That will come later in another installment.
Knight's Fire is mainly about Zephyr's escape, and he and Gawain bonding, and it's very sweet and I'd recommend it, especially for those, like me, who love dragon stories...but I'm not going to lie I'm really looking forward to finding out who the dark, evil mage is and seeing him get his comeuppance.

Very Insta-love, which I would expect from the Dragon shifter due to what amounts to imprinting...but not from the human. Not so quickly. But I did appreciate that Gawain cared for Zephyr no matter the form he assumed and that the knights were a mix of genders.

Hands down my favorite by this author! I SUPER LOVED THIS!!!
I cannot wait for more about these two! This is exactly what you want in a story. It moves along quickly. There’s action, adventure, true love, an adorable dragon with a tragic past, royalty, loads of magic, and some smexy times!
I just couldn’t get enough of Zephyr. I love him!!!! He is cute, a funny, and curious and sweet and loving and fierce – all wrapped up in a delightful package. Even though he has a madman after him, he’s still very optimistic and engaging.
Gawain is nice. Maybe a little underdeveloped as a character, but still lovely and a wonderful foil for Zephyr.
I can’t recommend this enough!

Can’t say this is a completely new take on dragons but it certainly has some new twists. The storyline is a little simple but in this case, it charmed me so I suppose that’s good 😬 There’s also a lot of magical aspects which definitely added to the story.
I would have loved to have more of Zephyr’s backstory but I think we’ll see it unfold over the course of the series instead. Hopefully it pans out!

There were some cute things about this but some of the dynamics are a bit off for my taste.
I loved how the dragon got the biggest crush and claimed the knight right away. It was so cute that he curled into his lap and claimed him as "my Gawain".
However things get sexual too quickly in a way that feels kind of icky. One, because the dragon is "innocent". And two, because the dragon is a dragon! And three, the dragon is really young and inexperienced and doesn't understand humanity versus Dragon hood!
Also, we never get to hear what happens to his enemy!

A light and sweet novella.
This was enjoyable and quite sweet. It ends without the conflict resolution but not an actual cliffhanger.

Super sweet and super quick love story that spans the time it takes the Knight from where he rescues the dragon to when they get to the castle. It might be short but it has everything in it. The dragon is not a dragon shifter, he has magic that allows him to take the shape of whatever he wants. The knight and dragon get really attached even when he's still only a talking dragon, and you can see just how sweet it is. But then sparks fly when Zephyr is in human form so we get dragon cuddles plus human steamy times, and lots of love. It might've happened fairly fast but it fit the story.

I needed a good book with dragons before starting a contemporary mystery and this was just what the doctor ordered.
I really enjoyed this world-building and the characters and after reading it the second time I know I will visit them often again.

I love SJ Himes. Her books are an auto-buy for me as I know she won't disappoint and this book was no different.
I loved the easy way this relationship developed and loved to see what Zephyr was capable of. Gawain is a true knight and his acceptance of Zephyr was a beautiful thing.
Can't wait to read the next book in this series as this is clearly a novella and I am so happy that we get to see more of them and that their story was not rushed

I always love reading this, and the audiobook was a great addition

I needed a good book with dragons before starting a contemporary mystery and this was just what the doctor ordered.
I really enjoyed this world-building and the characters and after reading it the second time I know I will visit them often again.
still: I really want to have the next book!

I love SJ Himes. Her books are an auto-buy for me as I know she won't disappoint and this book was no different.
I loved the easy way this relationship developed and loved to see what Zephyr was capable of. Gawain is a true knight and his acceptance of Zephyr was a beautiful thing.
Can't wait to read the next book in this series as this is clearly a novella and I am so happy that we get to see more of them and that their story was not rushed

What a sweet adorable story!!!! Strong characters but with puffiness and all fluff and wings a lot of magic and happiness🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 just all love and adorable huggable and lovable characters.
This book brought out my mamma bear "protect all" instincts and I just wanted to keep all from harm and protect what is MINE 😜😜😜😜
