A young archivist. A hidden power. And a forgotten history poised to repeat itself...

Introverted bookworm Silira Mór is the most promising historian to serve the city-state of Iathium in centuries. Proud and headstrong, Lira has dedicated her life to preserving the city's histories, working her way up the ranks in the Archive of the Dome—even capturing the attention of Iathium’s highest nobility.

Ambitious and fiercely independent, Lira has raised her younger brother alone and built the life she always dreamed of. But a disturbing revelation about her beloved histories from Iathium's young ruler—and the reemergence of long-suppressed magic on the continent—set her on a path that ultimately destroys her skillfully-crafted world.

If history is written by the victors, who is to say what actually happened?

Lira is working as a royal archivist preserving the histories of the kingdom when her life changes. She discovers she has ancestral magic that lets her witness history as it actually happened.

“A living vessel of history,” Lira breathed. “What does it mean?”
Irem’s eyes shone. Now, he beheld her with the same reverence that had emanated from him at his first mention of Skelly’s title. “It means you carry memories of Rodhlan’s past inside of you—even more so, once you receive your birthright. You will be a repository of truth; no written records shall override your word.”

Working with the charismatic young ruler Eremon and fellow archivist Aidryn, Lira uncovers a plot of stolen magic and is determined to set things right.

Iathium is truth, and truth is freedom. Don’t be afraid; we are being set free.”

I really loved the characters - they are vividly drawn. The world-building is detailed without having infodumps, and I really enjoyed the magic system.

This is a series that I love and most people haven’t read. The second book is out now and it’s so good. If you want to get on the bandwagon before it gets super popular now is the time.

I’d recommend it for fans of Elise Kova’s Air Awakens series, or Kelly St. Clare’s Tainted Accords. If you’re looking for a fantasy with court intrigue and a slow burn romance (it picks up in book two), this indie read is the one for you.

*******

Pre-review - nabbed for FREE from amazon.com on 15/9/24. Thanks to the Fussy Librarian email blast putting it on my radar 🤩

Part of their blurb that caught my eye:
A headstrong young historian inherits memory magic that allows her to see history as it actually happened, and finds herself thrust into a world of magic and intrigue she never believed in.

We all know history is written by the victors...but is that truly how things happened? 🤓
I have totally snapped up this series for less than $4 today 🤗

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙄 𝙇𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙙:

✨Strong connection to history
✨Character driven story with romantic subplot
✨Fast paced story

𝙁𝙪𝙡𝙡 𝙍𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬:
Lira, a girl working in the city archives, begins to realize that the stories and histories she has grown up believing may not be true, and she is called to try and uncover the truth of her people’s history. Between scheming families vying for power, clans with weakening magic, and a royal family divided amongst itself, Lira quickly becomes caught up in plots that are much bigger than she realized. Throw in a handsome young ruler, a fiercely loyal best friend, and a whole new world of magic, and you’ve got a really interesting fantasy world!

This book was so fast paced and has a great cast of characters. One of my favorite themes of the book is that history is written by the victors—so what would history look like, when told from the perspective of the other side? There’s also a good amount of romance mixed in with all the rebellion and politics (I’m solidly team Aidryn).

I liked this book at the beginning but felt way more drawn in by the end. I feel like the story is set up to be really, really good in book 2 and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where the stories goes!

I AM SO EMOTIONAL
I'll be honest, I didn't read the description of this book before diving in, so I had no idea what I was getting myself into. But oh my goodness, this was a page turner!!! This new world and system is so intriguing, I want to learn more and more about it. The descriptive imagery is extremely captivating and took me out of reality in the best way possible. Lira and Aidryn's story is just beginning and I cannot wait to read more!

First things first, I’m hooked.

This book has exceeded all expectations I had for it, just from the cover I knew I needed to read it. I’m normally an enemies to lovers kind of girl but these two? Omg they have my whole heart. Lira and Aidryn, have so much history and so much depth to them it’s hard not to love them.

The plot of the story really takes off, there isn’t a single dull moment of this book. It’s grabs you and takes hold of you and doesn’t let you go, I’d say it lets you go at the end but it doesn’t because that ending? It makes you want more. No you need more.

This book has left me in awe, and I cannot wait for the next book.

I've been looking forward to reading this book for so long ✨I stayed up all night to finish it - and I haven't done that since I was about seven years old, which just goes to show how much I loved this book 👀 I'm usually averse to reading ebooks or kindle (I'm definitely a paperback kind of girl) but I found that the layout and format was so easy to read, so don't let this put you off!

Defender of Histories is the first in a fantasy series by Haley Walden, following the adventures of young historian Silira Mór as she comes to terms with her new magical inheritance whilst piecing together the long-forgotten histories of her city. This book shows us what happens when history is written from the point of view of the victors, and the importance of unearthing the truth (a very current issue touching on modern-day colonialism and censorship 👀).

This book deserves so much more recognition: the worldbuilding was amazingly done, with no info-dump in sight, an intriguing plot and a magic system like nothing I've ever read before. The celtic mythology elements also really appealed to me and I'm looking forward to finding out more about the folklore of the clans.

The characters were so lovable - Aidryn and Lira have my heart 🥰 Lira was a really refreshing protagonist to read, who didn't fall prey to the stereotypical "perfect heroine" trope in a lot of fantasy books. She's a scholar and a historian who works hard and knows her shit, but she can also be stubborn and not see the bigger picture (I can't say more than that without spoiling the plot 👀)

It has everything you'd want from a story: fast-paced adventure, ancient libraries and general book nerdery, a slow-burn friends to lovers romance... be stilll my beating heart 👀📚✨🗝️📜🌳

Words cannot describe how I feel after reading this book!! It truly was a masterpiece!

I was pulled in right from the cover, from the very first lines, and wasn’t released until I flipped to the last page. Defender brought me on a whirlwind of emotions, with enough tears to fill a swimming pool after a certain point, but I would never go back because this has been one of the top books of my year!

Haley Walden did an amazing job in writing these characters, leaving the reader wanting for more interactions, more time with them. I certainly found that it was easy to relate to them, and can’t wait to see more of Lira and Aidryn’s story!!!

Oh my gosh, I’m speechless!!! I honestly can’t say what I was expecting before I started reading this book, but it was unlike anything I’d imagined.

The writing is amazing, and the scenes described makes it so easy to visualize what’s happening in this magical atmosphere. I was hooked from the very first page and, honest to god, I did NOT want to put this book down!!! The characters, the setting, the plot—I loved it all.

The romance is perfection. I cried many MANY times after a certain point. But I love this story so much and I can’t wait for the sequel!!

I received an ARC of this book in return for a review.

The start of Lira’s journey revolves around books, history, and magic. As a sucker for all three, I was immediately hooked. This will also appeal to fantasy lovers who enjoy stories about finding old magic and uncovering the truth. If you are looking for a new indie read, try giving Defender of Histories a whirl.

Lira has spent her life persevering Iathium’s histories. Her dedication and passion for history gets her noticed by Eremon, Iathium’s ruler, in more ways than one. His attention brings her the position she has long vied for, but she struggles to accept her new title as Defender of Histories and Eremon’s love. As Defender it’s up to her to help Eremon reveal the true histories. However, to right the wrongs of the past she has to decide if she is even willing to accept the truth, including the magic that comes with it. And with magic stirring among the clans outside Iathium, time is ticking as her quest for the truth turns into a quest for survival.

I enjoyed this book including the beautiful cover. When it came to the writing itself, the prose felt clean and well edited, making for a smooth read without any distracting typos or grammar mistakes. The writing style itself was enjoyable and let me get lost in the story.

With this being fantasy I was eager to learn more about the world. The world-building is easy to follow without getting overwhelming. This also had good character development that made each character feel unique and made it easy to get absorbed into their lives and trials. This story is very character driven and I enjoyed Lira’s character and found her easy to root for through everything from falling in love to facing old friends as enemies. The romantic subplot in this will appeal to those who like some tragic romance in their fantasy.

Disclaimer: I received an ARC in return for an honest review.

A dense YA Fantasy rich with world building, DEFENDER OF HISTORIES reminded me of THE LIBRARIANS meets Atlantis, where a single, cataclysmic event casts everything into disarray. Overall, I really enjoyed it! The plot: an archivist has her future career thrown into chaos when she discovers a long-running conspiracy. She also attracts the romantic intentions of a young, revolutionary Emperor, which makes the situation 10x worse.

Slow to start and a bit weighed down by its own world building, I found that DEFENDER really started to pick up about 25% of the way in. By the last third of the book I was riveted. Silira (the MC) is bookish, intelligent, and stubborn. Her best friend, Aidryn, manages to avoid the “best friend thinks he's friendzoned" trope for the most part. I really enjoyed the twist with him at the end.

The biggest drawback that I see to this book? It’s a genre mash that is probably pulling from too many different conventions. I personally love genre mashes, but some of the narrative choices in the beginning could be misinterpreted by certain audiences who expect a certain kind of payoff.

Spoilers:

Verdict: I say give this book a shot, and if you enjoy love stories go into this book understanding that DEFENDER is definitely not genre-specific romance. There’s lots to love with the world building.

What an adventure! *__* I'm so excited for the sequel now!

Disclaimer: I received a free ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Overall opinion: A lovely tale of inner strength, friendship, loss and the start of a journey. An adventure like no other, in a YA fantasy book that’s pleasantly enjoyable even for an adult reader.

Young, introvert archivist Silira Mór only has one dream: to become a great archivist and spend the rest of her life among her beloved books and manuscripts. But things change when, one day, she gets to meet the Rì in the Archive and finds out that not all things that she’s given for granted to date are what they seem. That’s the start of strange, life turning journey towards a secret destiny that Lira doesn’t fully understand yet.

And Haley Walden’s writing style is smooth, sleek and engaging. It’s hard to stop reading once you’ve got into the flow — and you get there pretty soon. The prose is enjoyable to read and every word triggers you to want to learn more about what’s going to happen next.

The author calls this a character-driven work. In a sense that is true. But it is even more driven by the history of the land she has created. I have read this book multiple times, and am intrigued by it every time. It is a romance, but reluctantly. It is a quest narrative. It pleases on multiple levels. Her characters are alive, but so are the settings. As a self-diagnosed introvert, I identify with the heroine, Silira. She is an introvert who is forced into taking a role she never wanted, but cannot ignore. It is not that she handles becoming a public figure that is important, but that the author accurately describes what it feels like to be an introvert who has to deal with unpleasant people.

I received an eARC copy of Defender of Histories, and it did not disappoint! I loved it so much I bought myself a copy to help support the author. Defender of Histories was a fun ride all the way through. I'm really glad I picked this one up.

The story kept me engaged from beginning to end, and the romance in this one is amazing. I'm really cheering for the main couple, or at least who I think will be the main couple. 😉

You guys should definitely check this one out if you love romances, magic, adventure, and characters that happen to be history nerds. #relatable

Salira (Lira to most), an archivist in her city, has always desired a quiet life in the archive, she doesn’t mind being unseen and cherishes her independence. Through a series of events, she is forced into a secret world of intrigue and magic. Her beloved city and country hold dangerous truths she has been purposefully sheltered from. With the help from old and new friends and unexpected allies, she must learn to wield the magic within her and prepare to fight for everything she holds dear.

This story was everything I hoped for and more. Immediately I was drawn in, I honestly didn’t want to put it down.

The world building is fantastic, the pacing is perfect. There’s so much I’d like to add about all the characters we are introduced to as things progress. But I don’t want to give away anything. I will say this: Lira is such a relatable character. Her desire for anonymity, her drive for truth and purpose. She has to give up so much of the life she hoped to have and her reluctant hesitation to accept things showcases her growth and development and the character and motives of those around her as the book reaches its ending.

Speaking of the ending, it was beautiful. So many emotions throughout the book. I’d give it more stars if I could.

Wonderful world and characters

My favorite thing about fantasy novels is that you get the development of characters as well as an introduction to a new world. You learn more about this magical place, Iathium, as you go on a journey with the characters who live there. This book does it all so well. Beautifully descriptive with intriguing characters who evolve and change as the world around them shifts. Definitely a must-read for any fantasy lover.

I've spent a lot of time actually staring at it, it represents the protagonist Silira SO well 💜

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is a YA fantasy following introverted bookworm Silira Mór, who's one of the most prominent historians of the time. Life is going great for her, with a job she loves, and her sibling Talfryn and her best friend Aidryn always at her side.

But in a cruel twist of fate, she discovers that the histories she works so hard to protect are actually falsified. And the kingdom's young ruler Eremon is now counting on her assistance to uncover the falsified histories and bring glory and justice to their people. Oh, and Aidryn has secrets of his own, and he's doing his best to protect Silira from dangers she might be in now.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book is a mix of adventure, romance, betrayal, tragedy and a slow-burn friends to lovers. I loved reading it! I'm excited to read book 2 which is narrated from Aidryn's perspective 💜

Genre: Fantasy
Format: ebook ARC

Loved:
*Library (bc books!)
* Fast-paced
*Awesome character development
*Magic
*Not too spicy

Loved Less:
*Silira is too self-absorbed and "protected" by those who love her
*Needs more detail on magic, clans, etc

Description:
Introverted bookworm Silira Mór is the most promising historian to serve the city-state of Iathium in centuries. Lira has more than she could have ever dreamed possible: friends, meaningful work, and even a budding romance with Iathium’s young ruler, Rí Eremon.

In a cruel twist of fate, Lira learns her beloved histories have been falsified—and that a forgotten, long-suppressed magic is surging across the continent. With the help of Eremon and her childhood friend, Aidryn Tarlach, Lira sets out to learn the real truth about her world. But when tragedy strikes, she finds herself alone, with enemies at every turn.

My opinion:
Great fantasy storyline with well developed characters. Lira annoys me at times with her self-absorption and total unawareness of what is going on around her and to her "friends." I needed/wanted more to fully understand the magic elements, clans, lands. Love the theme of history being written (and controlled) by the victor; therefore, it is not so accurate. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens in the next book. Team Aidryn!

This was a book that made me drop everything going on in my adult life until I finished.

Lira is an archivist, immensely proud of her city’s perfectly preserved histories. She is devoted to her job, but when the head archivist - the Defender of Histories - tells her the history she treasures so dearly may have been rewritten, her world is thrown into chaos. Teaming up the the handsome and charismatic king, Rí Eremon, as well as her childhood friend and work companion, Aidryn Tarlach, Lira strives to find the truth.

Walden does an impressive job keeping this book at a breakneck pace while simultaneously developing her characters and building the world they live in. Things definitely move fast here, but I didn’t feel like I lost out on becoming invested in the characters or understanding what was going on. There were times I had to go back and reread to understand better, but the copy I read was also an unfinished earc so things could be cleaned up in the final copy. Even though there were a few times I wished for more explanations, particularly of the magic system and the political workings of the ruler and the clans, I was thoroughly immersed in this world and the characters.

And the characters are where this book really shines. Lira is a strong protagonist who is called to examine her internal biases when it comes to the histories she’s been taught. I’m really hoping we get more background on the clans in the next book as I think they’ll strengthen her character even further. The budding romance between her and Eremon had a good balance, but was a little fast. But the entire book is very fast-paced. Aidryn is mine now and that’s all I have to say on the matter 😂 The only thing I really missed when it came to characters was getting a strong female friendship, but the friendship between Aidryn and Lira was endearing and very real.

So while not a perfect book, it was riveting and creative, and I can’t wait to dive into the second one. Very impressed with this story and this author, and highly recommend to any fantasy lover!

Dnf at 43%. I can't do this. The world and story are so interesting and unique, but I just can't keep going. The female lead is one of the most annoying and unlikeable main characters I have come across. She's so stupid and entitled and only cares about herself. I was promised a good female friendship in this book but that friendship is a joke. Lira, the mc keeps lying to her so called best friend for weeks, doesn't even check in on her when she knows very well Caitir (her friend) is suffering from extreme pressure from her mother. Instead she lies to her and when the truth comes out the worst way possible lira has the nerve to feel angry at her friend for feeling betrayed???? Sis, idk what to tell you, but if you lie yo your so called bff for weeks she has every right to feel betrayed. You could have told her in advance, so she doesn't have to find out THAT way. But no, you didn't.

Also she is handed everything because she is so special. She is given this high position at work that she isn't even trained for. Another character, who was actually more trained for this position, steps down to give it to lira instead because she is so special. She has special powers she didn't even know she had, that she doesn't know how to use but she is given the position anyway.

Also the romance is too sickly sweet and insta lovey for me. Give me the slow burn, give me the yearning. Not the marriage proposal after knowing each other for 2 weeks.

The world building seemed so interesting but I can't continue a book when I despise the main character.

I received an eARC in return for a honest review.

The Defender of Histories is a dream tale. Young Lira works in a massive library that I wish I could visit! Her job is to document the histories of Iathium with none other then her closest friend Aidryn. Her commitment has drawn the attention of the Iathium ruler, Eremon, and not only in the literal sense.

As it soon becomes known, history is often written from one view and often by the victors. Therefore to accept that the past has more stories to tell, Lira must accept that magic also is in abundance in her world.

I really enjoyed this book. Lira was super relatable and her work ethic was one I really connected with.
Romance is also present, from broken hearts to friends-lovers. It’s one of the best friends-lovers I have read. You can see the connection and understand how it’s bloomed to love.

I cannot wait to read the sequel!!!

This was a very confusing magic system.
Silira was annoying and such aboring character to move around: all she did was crying, making stupid decisions that she regretted immediately after and asking for forgiveness so many times.
Emeron and Aidryn seemed like salvable characters, but their affection to the stupid main character just did not let them shine through.
There was a lot that went on but everything happened too fast and felt too rushed.

The Defender of Histories took me on some interesting adventures, some that I didn’t quite see coming. The story uses some perspectives I don’t often see in fantasy novels, but definitely enjoyed. The POV of an archivist/historian ended up being a fun ride.
The MC (Silira) is a bit of a book-loving nerd. She is quite enjoyable to learn about through the early chapters as the story weaves out a fairly whimsical relationship between three friends that I half-expected to carry into the broader story. I don’t want to spoil anything, but there were definitely some twists that started hitting midway through that I didn’t see coming. The twists are a bit sneaky, but in a good way.
For me, by the last page this became one of those books where the early story almost feels like a distant memory from years before. I felt a tad bit of nostalgia for it as I turned the last page, which is generally a good sign from a debut.
Although this is an indie book, it reads quite smooth, with well-edited, and often poetic prose. The page/word count is a tad higher for a debut but it was definitely on the enjoyable side for me.
There are some romantic currents in the story’s stream but this is not what I consider “romantacy” by any means. I was pleasantly surprised to find it very clean with virtually no spice, enjoyable for audiences 12+.
There were a few action scenes, mostly toward the end, where I did have some trouble picturing the lay of what exactly was happening. This didn’t happen much and didn’t take away from the intrigue of the story, and I’ve actually read some trad published books that did this much worse.
Overall, I enjoyed the story and character development within it. If I had to guess, the story only gets more intriguing from here. If you’re into YA fantasy with some historical/archival themes, light romantic themes, magic, and don’t mind a thicker read for a debut, I’d say give The Defender of Histories a try.

This is an epic saga and the first book in a series so
you will need to know it is not a quick read but one
that will be time consuming but so worth the effort!

Lira is content to work in the archives with books with a close friend but her world is about to be disrupted in more ways than she she can ever imagine! It’s an exciting but tragic journey as she gets a taste of love from the last person she would ever expect only to see him die and experience bitter betrayal from her best girl friend which turns to hatred towards her. Her world crashes down around her and just when things are the bleakest, she is rescued only to be imprisoned once again. She escapes because of her best friend and their journey is recounted in this book only to find out that who they are escaping from has followed them and her friend is captured. Thus setting the stage for the next book in the series!

If you’re looking for a book which contains a lot of detail along with intrigue, suspense, adventure, romance, betrayal and a story which will keep you reading well into the night this is it!

I heartily recommend this book as the beginning of an exciting series in the age old battle between good and evil with magic wielders fighting on both sides! It
will definitely hold your interest!

I can’t wait to continue the story of Lira and Aidryn and see if the rescue takes place in the next book or if It has to wait for later and what these people go through during the interim until they are reunited! It
will be exciting so why not come along with me and we can all enjoy the reading experience together!
