Ta książka nie opowie o idealnym polskim mieście. To nie będzie sentymentalna wycieczka po wyidealizowanych lwowskich ulicach. To będzie podróż, podczas której poznamy prawdziwe oblicze miasta. Wybitnych naukowców zachwycających cały świat. Uzdolnionych pisarzy i artystów. Dzielnych lekarzy ratujących życie polskich profesorów w czasie II wojny światowej. Usłyszymy też o najczarniejszych momentach historii tego miasta. Bratobójczych walkach między Polakami a Ukraińcami, w których ginęli młodzi polscy patrioci. O pogromach Żydów, którzy nie chcieli stanąć po żadnej ze stron.

To książka o mieście, które bezpowrotnie zniknęło.

O ludziach je tworzących i o wydarzeniach, których było świadkiem. O utracie swojej małej ojczyzny. I tych, którzy zajęli ich miejsce. Komuniści nie chcieli o tym mówić, a Polacy powoli o tym zapominają. Historia polskiego Lwowa, który musi odnaleźć się w nowej, ukraińskiej już, rzeczywistości.

An interesting history of the city of Lemberg, ruled by many different and mostly harsh rulers. Lemberg is an important city in the geographic region of Galicia, fell under Polish rule but became a cultural and social center in the the Austrian-Hungarian empire. After the fall of the empire, it briefly was a part of independent West Ukraine, before becoming Polish and named Lwów. In 1939, it was occupied by the Soviets, followed by the Nazis in 1941. Towards the end of World War II the Soviets annexed the region and Lemberg started going by the Russian name Lvov. After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the independence of Ukraine, the city is called Lviv. Almost daily we hear about Lviv being stricken by drones and missiles from Russia. Whenever you do, think back of the history of this suffering city.

Ik moet zeggen: het is geen boek om erg vrolijk van te worden. Maar het is wel goed én het is goed dat Kleveman dit onderwerp aansnijdt. Door zelf onderzoek te doen legt hij bloot hoeveel van de recente geschiedenis in Oekraïne wordt “vergeten” of juist uitvergroot. Hij vertelt het gruwelijke verhaal van de Sovjet-vervolging en de Holocaust die de stad getroffen heeft en inderdaad, daarna kijk je met andere ogen naar deze prachtige stad. Verplichte stof voor iedereen die naar Lviv afreist.

Not recommended for anyone who is interested in the history of Lviv that apparently begins in 1918 and end in 1945 for this German journalist. It’s quite dated takes on present day Lviv are also difficult to read 10 years later.

Sehr lang, aber absolut lesenswert insbesondere zur NS-Zeit bzw. Zweiten Weltkrieg, um die heutige Ukraine zu verstehen. Zeigt, was Geschichte uns lehren kann. Eine dicke Empfehlung!
