Un paesino sperduto, un barone scienziato, una donna bellissima popolano i sogni (ricordi) del dottor Amberg, ricoverato in ospedale dopo un incidente non meglio definito. Tutto è confuso nella sua mente, dalla cognizione del tempo al risveglio nel letto d’ospedale, vegliato da un’infermiera scorbutica.
La memoria riaffiora gradualmente, all’inizio solo frammenti, ma poi Amberg riesce faticosamente a rimettere insieme i pezzi di quello che tutti vorrebbero lui credesse un sogno dovuto a una commozione cerebrale.
Ma è proprio il sogno il centro intorno a cui ruota il racconto e non solo per l’atmosfera onirica di un villaggio fermo nel tempo (un tempo che zoppica e a volte cammina bene, dilatando le ore dell’attesa e riducendo a brevi istanti la felicità assaporata).

“Il sogno concede con prodigalità ciò che la vita, nella sua avarizia, ci nega. E della cosiddetta realtà... che cosa resta, poi? Anche quello che abbiamo vissuto diventa pallido e incerto, e poi eccolo dileguarsi come si dilegua un sogno”.

Amberg sogna l’amore di una donna. Il barone ha un sogno diverso, che attraversa secoli di storia, alla ricerca di quella fede cieca in una monarchia venerata come emanazione della volontà divina.

“I grandi simboli –corona, scettro, mitra e globo –sono stati creati e concessi dall’ardore della fede. L’umanità non crede più in questi simboli. Chi saprà ridestare l’ardore della fede in un tempo che è divenuto vuoto e tiepido avrà buon gioco nel ricondurre i cuori ai fulgori della corona e all’idea dell’impero per grazia divina”.

L’Impero è caduto, il popolo ha bisogno di fede perché l’unico, vero Imperatore possa tornare e con lui i tempi felici della gloria passata. Ci vuole una droga che risvegli gli uomini alla fede.
Ma purtroppo per il barone, nemmeno la fede rimane identica nel tempo.
Una nuova febbre attraversa la sua epoca, sanguinaria, violenta,

“Chiusi gli occhi per riflettere. La rivoluzione! Il sogno di un nuovo ordine delle cose ottenuto con la violenza. Questa fede, come tutte le fedi, non ha forse i suoi evangelisti e la sua Bibbia, il suo mito e i suoi dogmi, i suoi sacerdoti e le sue sette, i suoi martiri e il suo paradiso? Questa dottrina, come ogni nuova dottrina, non viene perseguitata e repressa dai potenti della Terra? Non vive forse in segreto nei cuori di tutti coloro che a parole devono rinnegarla? Fiumi di sangue vengono versati in nome suo. È il Vangelo oppure il Moloch dei nostri giorni?”

È un romanzo visionario, che gioca tra sogno, dormiveglia e una realtà negata. E sullo sfondo, confuse nella nebbia, le camicie brune avanzano implacabili.

catching up once more.

I really, really liked this one. It's so twisted! I thought it was a crime novel but no way -- this is a very dark book overflowing with paranoia, one that seriously played with my head.

When I got to the end of this book, my first reaction was a very jolting "what?" but in the space of a couple of seconds, it changed to "ah, I get it." Saint Peter's Snow was originally published in 1933 by Austrian publisher Paul Zsolnay, whom the Nazis labeled as a "Jewish" publisher, causing many of his writers' works (including that of Perutz, also living in Austria) to be banned in Germany. I mention this little tidbit of information because it might help to put the book in historical context, which is very important in this case, and also so that anyone who may be interested in Saint Peter's Snow won't have the "what?" reaction I did because I'd completely forgotten about it. Enough of that, now briefly to the book.

I was seriously caught up in this strange book from the beginning because as the novel opens, the main character, Georg Amberg, has evidently been in a deep coma, and on coming out of it, has lost his memory. First, what he thinks he remembers and what he's told is the reason why he's laid up in a hospital bed are two different animals; second, he thinks he's been there five days but he's been told it's been five weeks, and third, he's absolutely positive that the hospital porter attending him is a disguised Prince Praxatin, "the last of the house of Rurik." Huh?? So right away the reader feels a sense of disorientation along with the main character, and that feeling continues throughout the rest of the book. The story then launches into Amberg's recollections about the time leading up to his hospitalization, but the reader doesn't quite know if this is a product of his damaged memory or if what he's saying is actually what happened. It's a balancing act where the reader walks a fine line -- you have to decide if what Amberg remembers is actually true and if you go that route, then you have to wonder why the doctors, nurses and others may be trying to insist that he's delusional. It's an interesting scenario, for sure, and I found myself trying to find clues to support both sides of that argument, and there are a number of them scattered here and there throughout this story.

I think that's about all I'll say for the time being except for the fact that the word "sinister" can most definitely can be applied to this book, along with twisty, dark, and strange. If anyone's at all interested in trying this novel, don't read anything that may spoil it. The back-cover blurb, in my opinion, gives a bit too much away, but I will repeat and agree with the part that says

"Saint Peter's Snow is a conspiratorial, politically charged tale of suspense about the mysterious workings of memory, and the lies we choose to believe."

It's also a highly-satisfying novel I can recommend to anyone who, like me, loves obscure fiction. Kudos to Pushkin Vertigo for another winning reprint.

Ciò che si possiede in sogno, nessun nemico al mondo può sottrarlo

Quello che mi piace di Leo Perutz è che lui, una storia, la sa raccontare. Basta aprire il libro, e il resto viene da sé. Non dovete fare niente. Sarete trasportati in scenari storici, fantastici oppure onirici (o tutto insieme, ma senza disturbare né intaccare la sospensione d'incredulità del lettore), scivolerete dolcemente in storie dalle trame perfettamente congegnate. Ecco, dovete solo sognare.
In questo romanzo poi le atmosfere sono particolarmente riuscite: misteriose ed oniriche, quasi gotiche, tra volute di nebbia e alambicchi, caramelle al lampone e cadillac verdi, e ossessioni di varia natura.
Ma quello che davvero più di tutto mi piace di Perutz sono i suoi personaggi. Sembre un po' balordi e ambivalenti, sempre in bilico tra codardia e ossessioni da un lato, e i sentimenti, gli slanci più puri dall'altro. In bilico tra vita e sogno.

Sulla trama non dico nulla perché non voglio "spoilerare", però ad un certo punto c'è un colpo di scena in cui sulle prime ho pensato: no, però l'allegoria "politico-religiosa" è troppo scoperta... poi però ci ho riflettuto e pensando anche al periodo in cui il romanzo è stato scritto (uscì nel 1933) ho capito che l'allegoria è più sottile di quello che pensavo, che nelle idee (profetiche) dell'autore ci sono le ideologie farneticanti, le criminali infatuazioni di massa che resero bui gli anni a venire...

romanzo illuminato dal chiarore di una lampada a olio, questo. come quella che il barone von malchin si ostina a usare nei suoi alloggi al posto della luce elettrica. ma anche come quella con cui perutz illumina via via solo il necessario, amplificando le ombre di una storia in cui l'atmosfera ha un ruolo fondamentale (tendenza film con bela lugosi, per capirsi) mentre il clima storico degli anni '30 nutre l'ispirazione.
e infatti se nel pervicace ancorarsi al passato da parte del barone sta la chiave della vicenda - su cui ovviamente mi taccio - lo scenario incombente è quello della situazione austriaca dopo il crollo dell'impero asburgico, e i contadini che nel romanzo intonano l'internazionale contro i latifondisti richiamano rivolte popolari come quella del luglio 1927 a vienna. il resto è tutto fervore immaginativo di perutz, che pone le spore lanuginose di un particolare micete al centro di un piano visionario al quale il barone ha consacrato la vita, ma soprattutto colora di tinte invernali uno scenario su cui si muovono personaggi capaci di imprimersi con pochi, riuscitissimi dettagli.
per dire. quando il protagonista friedrich attende finalmente una visita dell'amata bibiche, acquista all'emporio un cartoccio di caramelle al lampone, qualche mela, una tavoletta di cioccolato, una scatola di dolci, dei datteri e una bottiglia di liquore. leggendo non ho potuto fare a meno di pensare quanto amerei ispirare preparativi così deliziosamente scriteriati, ma temo che sia necessario chiamarsi per lo meno bibiche.

Bence Türkiye'nin gotik, korku türlerindeki en iyi editör (bu anlamda makalelerinden oluşan, İthaki Yayınları'ndan çıkan kitabı "Maskenin Düştüğü Yer"'i muhakkak okuyunuz) Yankı Enki'nin önerisi ile aldığım, İş Bankası Kültür Yayınları'ndan çıkan Leo Perutz eseri "Şeytan Tozu" güzel bir tat bıraktı zihnimde. Akıcı, dili sade, dönüşümler geçiren enteresan bir konuyu ilginç bir şekilde ele almış. Gotik özelliklerin hepsine sahip okunası, türü sevenlerin lezzet alacağı, kütüphaelerde bulunası bir kitap.

Unfurling slowly with impeccable pacing, this odd hybrid of mystery, fable, and strange tale surreptitiously slides under one's skin, where once encysted it prickles with fervor should one leave its cover closed for too long at a stretch. It's not surprising that the Nazis banned such an elegantly haunting harbinger of their nefarious rise to power. Perutz's prescience manifested in other ways, too, but you'll need to read the book to find out how.

Non è un giallo: ci sono troppi elementi irrazionali e fantastici.
Non è un noir: I suoi terrori notturni, i suoi bagliori di zolfo sono venati di razionalità e di divertimento.
Non è un libro "gotico" perché si respira troppo l’aria degli inizi novecento in cui Perut ha ambientato la storia.
Eppure questo romanzo è stato inserito da Borges tra i migliori gialli di ogni tempo ” [gialli]che racchiudono un mistero [che] sappiamo … si risolverà logicamente. È un caos che racchiude l`ordine”.

La trama, di questo magnifico giallo non giallo, è un trafiletto in cronaca:
“ Giovane medico viene travolto da un automobilista mentre transitava, verso le due del pomeriggio, per la piazza davanti la stazione di Osnabruk. Ricoverato nell’ospedale cittadino per ferite alla spalla e all’omero e trauma cranico, Friedrich Amberg è il suo nome, è in coma a causa commozione cerebrale. La prognosi è riservata ma i medici non disperano in una risoluzione. “

Perutz crea un caos ma passaggio dopo passaggio riordina gli elementi dell’equazione lasciandoci il compito di trovare la “x”scartando le soluzioni irreali: la suspense non inganna il lettore eppure lo avvolge tra le sue spire perché la logica non fa una grinza.
Fa dimenticare, infatti, al lettore di quale sostanza sono i fatti nell’universo euclideo abitato da Amberg prima dell’incidente: con perfezione geometrica – era un matematico - “ finge” una realtà parallela ( sogno o allucinazione) che affianca alla finzione della realtà: l’incidente per fortuna non mortale in cui incappa un medico, con la testa tra le nuvole, in una località della Vestfalia, nel gennaio del 1933.

La realtà parallela, che potrebbe risultare grottesca nella sua smaccata assurdità, acquista veridicità dal qui e ora dell’ambientazione in cui l’inverosimile si stava materializzando: la follia collettiva dei contadini drogati, nel borgo in cui il giovane medico operava, non è che la follia delle masse inneggianti al Fuhrer appena al potere.

Attenti però: mai Leo Perutz imbroglia il lettore facendogli credere quello che non è.
Se accade è per l’attiva partecipazione di questi quando, svestiti i panni dell’analizzatore del testo e di per sé asciutto di finezze matematiche, si tuffa anima e corpo nella storia, cucinata con la perizia di uno consapevole di essere già un classico nella contemporaneità.

La profezia e il Moloch

Il Barone Von Malchin crede in molte cose.
Crede che il mondo sia corrotto, che il germanesimo e la fede religiosa possano curarlo, che ogni mezzo sia lecito per raggiungere questa palingenesi.
Per questo, sperimenta sui paesani della sua tenuta una droga sintetizzata da un parassita che, naturalmente, infestava l'Europa fin dal Medioevo.
Ma la fede rispecchia il tempo presente e non saranno inni sacri a risuonare in processione, ma l'Internazionale.
Il sogno del vecchio fanatico di rimettere sul trono d'Europa un discendente di Federico di Svevia "Stupor Mundi" finirà nel sangue, scempiato dai fanatici che lui stesso aveva creato (o risvegliato?).

Unico romanzo esplicitamente politico di Perutz, "La neve di San Pietro" è figlio anch'esso del suo tempo, il 1933, del timore e del disgusto dell'autore per il clima di fanatismo in cui il suo mondo era precipitato e si era infine dissolto. Curiosamente, il romanzo è coevo dell'analogo "Sogno in rosso" dell'amico e discepolo di Perutz, Alexander Lernet Holenia.

Perutz descrive il Barone non come un sognatore, ma come un individuo assolutamente certo del suo piano,con una volontà di ferro e dominata da un'energia reale ma sconosciuta.
Forse pensava a un altro sognatore, liquidato come un pazzo, che di lì a poco avrebbe dimostrato al mondo intero di cosa era capace mettendosi alla testa di un'intera nazione, soggiogandola con la droga di un'aberrante propaganda e col sinistro fascino di un'ideologia razzista di morte e sopraffazione del più debole.

Così, risuona inquietante e profetico il passo in cui il parroco del paese ricorda al Barone il Libro dei Re, i sacrifici a Moloch, divinità sanguinaria destinata di lì a poco a reincarnarsi per esigere dal mondo il sacrificio della seconda guerra mondiale.

Kitabın en güzel sürprizi de burada. Ayrıca tarihi bilgiler, çok iyi karakter tahlilleri ve politik mesajları da kitabı renkli kılıyor. Leo Perutz kuvvetli bir kalem, diğer kitaplarını da okuyacağım. Etkileyici bir bilim kurgu. 1930'ların Almanyası... Küçük bir köy, büyük kadim bir imparatorluğu diriltme hülyalarıyla bilimsel adımlar atan bir asilzade, okul yıllarında âşık olunan bir kadın... Kahramanımız Doktor Amberg'in yaşadıkları gerçek mi, yoksa herkesin iddia ettiği gibi rüya mı?
Bir solukta okunan sürükleyici bir hikâye...

L’ultimo degli Hohenstaufen

Vivo nella città dove, come la Storia ci tramanda ma la fantasia di Perutz ci mette in dubbio, l’ultimo degli Hohenstaufen nella linea ereditaria maschile morì dopo 23 anni di prigionia…
Proprio di fronte alla biblioteca da cui ho preso questo libro sorge ancora l’antico Palazzo in cui questi fu detenuto e al nome di Re Enzo è intitolata la piazza prospiciente...
Ovvero: quando si legge un romanzo di Leo Perutz le suggestioni e i richiami, le coincidenze e gli stimoli si accavallano. E potrei continuare aggiungendo il ricordo del mio docente di Farmacologia (grazie professor Babbini!) allorché divagando raccontò in dettaglio ad un branco di studenti, tutti meno uno interessati soltanto alle terapie mediche, il rapporto protratto nei secoli fra ingestione accidentale di cereali contaminati (alcaloidi della segale cornuta) e fenomeni di estasi religiosa…
Le divagazioni sono pressoché inevitabili e lo snodo centrale di “La neve di San Pietro” può essere individuato proprio in una divaricazione, un bivio fra sogno e veglia, fra allucinazione e realtà, una virtuale “Sliding Door” in cui il percorso narrativo, così come l’esistenza del protagonista, si sdoppia in maniera drammatica.
Una delle abilità dell’autore sta nel portare fino all’ultima pagina e senza forzature questo continuo capovolgimento, accumulando molteplici situazioni in cui lo stesso io narrante semina dubbi sulla successione degli eventi (… in seguito devo aver vagato per qualche tempo all’aria aperta…) o adducendo tracce o indizi che rimettono ogni volta in discussione i fatti dati per definitivi ed acquisiti, con gran divertimento per i lettori che non disdegnino di essere beffati e lasciati a bocca aperta.
Né infine si può ignorare come la capacità del romanzo di inanellare suggestioni sorprendenti travalichi la pura e semplice fantasia nella costruzione della trama per sconfinare nella preveggenza: come altrimenti si può interpretare l’evocazione (da parte di uno dei personaggi principali) di concetti quali legittimismo e pangermanesimo in un’opera pubblicata nel 1933, poco prima della presa del potere hitleriana?
Sono andato a ruota libera, ma è l’approccio che questo libro mi ha suscitato.

الغموض سيد الموقف

منذ اللحظة الأولى التي يستيقظ فيها بطل الرواية "أمبيرج" يصف حالته بأنها عبارة عن شعور بالوعي المُسربل بالغموض. ومنذ تلك اللحظة نشاركه رحلته في محاولات البحث في دهاليز ذاكرته من أجل أن نفهم كيف وصل إلى هذا المستشفى التي استيقظ فيها.

رويدًا رويدًا ومع غوصنا في التفاصيل الغريبة، تتلبّسنا حالة من الريبة والدهشة والتعجب في هذه الرحلة. وخلف الضباب الذي يلف القرية نعيش في عالم قوطي غارق في الغموض. بصحبة بارون إقطاعي وعالمة وأمير وطبيب وناظر عزبة من أصول نبيلة وقصر وفلاحين

ورغم هدوء أحداث الرواية وميلها للأسلوب المسرحي في بعض المواضع (كُتبت عام 1933) إلا أنها جاءت مثيرة ومشوقة. فالقارئ حتى الصفحات الأخيرة في الرواية لا يزال يبحث عن الحقيقة ويحاول ربط الأحداث، بل وربما يقرر أن يختار لنفسه نهاية أخرى غير التي انتهت إليها الرواية!


إسقاطات... إسقاطات... إسقاطات

إن الإثارة الحقيقة في رأيي تقبع بين السطور وخلف الستار الكثيف من الإسقاطات المترعة في الرواية. فالكتاب مليء بالإسقاطات السياسية والدينية حتى النُخاع. رُبما لن ينتبه لهذه الإسقاطات قارئ زمننا المُعاصر، لكن يجب أن ندرك السياق التاريخي الذي كُتبت فيه الرواية، والتي كُتبت عام 1933.

الإسقاط الأول هو القرية المُغلفة بالضباب والذي قصد بها الكاتب الدولة الألمانية بزعامة هتلر.

والإسقاط الثاني هو البارون والذي قصد به الكاتب شخصية هتلر ودورها بأفكاره وطموحه وجنونه.

والإسقاط الثالث كيفية استخدام السياسة للدين أو بالأحرى لخصائص الإيمان وتأثيره على البشر، ودوره في خلق إيديولوجيا متطرفة. ولأنني لا أريد أن أحرق أحداث الرواية، أنصح القارئ بإعادة قراءة الربع الأخير منها والانتباه إلى مضمون الحوارات، وذلك بعد وضع الإسقاطات التي ذكرتهم في اعتباره. ولا عجب إن عرفنا -بعد إلمامنا بتلك الإسقاطات- أن الرواية مُنعت في ألمانيا فور نشرها.

لا أنكر أنني مندهش من تشابه الطرق -باختلاف المُسمّيات- التي تستثار بها الجموع وتؤثر في حماسته وقراراته والتي نجدها بشكل مُفصل في عشرات الكُتب التي كتبت عن هذا الأمر لعل من أشهرها كتاب "المؤمن الصادق" لإريك هوفر (صدر عام 1951) وكتاب "سيكولوجية الجماهير" لغوستاف لوبون. (صدر عام 1895)

السرد...

يملك ليو بيروتس قلمًا رائعًا، ولديه قُدرة عجيبة على تطويع الكلمات من أجل خلق تناغم بين الجُمل والفقرات. ربما لم تكن الأحداث سريعة، لكنها جاءت ملائمة جدًا للزمن المكتوب فيه الرواية بالإضافة إلى مناسبتها لزمن الأحداث. وربما لن يلحظ القارئ أي بُطء في الأحداث بسبب مهارة الكاتب في تهيئة بيئة من الغموض نابعة من النص. خلق هذا الغموض نوع من الترقّب في نفس القارئ الذي سيصل إلى مشارف النهاية التي ربما لم يكن يتوقعها.

ليس غريبًا على الإطلاق أن يتحمّس لليو بيروتس، الكاتب لويس بورخيس ويصفه كأعظم كُتّاب الأدب الغرائبي في عصره، ويسعى إلى ترجمة أعماله، باعتباره مؤسس الواقعية السحرية في ثوبها الشرق أوروبي. وأيضًا ليس غريبًا أن يصف كُتَّابٌ بثِقَل إيتالو كالفينو وألفريد هيتشكوك وفريدريش دورينمات بأنهم من كبار مُعجبيه.


الترجمة

لم أكن لأستمتع بسرد مثل سرد ليو بيروتس بدون ترجمة مُتمكّنة وقادرة على إبقاء جذوة ترقّبي مُشتعلة. أعجبني اختيار المُترجم لأغلب الألفاظ، وإجادته في تركيب الجُمل. وأنا أعرف أن الترجمة من الألمانية ليس أمرًا سهلًا. ربما رأيت أن هناك بعض الألفاظ كانت لتُعبّر عن المعنى بشكل أفضل في سياق الرواية على سبيل المثال كلمة "عقيدة" بدلًا من "إيمان"، لكنني قد أتفهّم سبب تفضيل المُترجم للكلمة الأخيرة وذلك لإبقاء المدلول قابلًا للمقارنة بين الجانب الديني والجانب السياسي مثلما أراد الكاتب ليو.

ترجم الرواية المُترجم المصري أحمد الزناتي، وأرى أنه قام بعمله ببراعة يستحق عليها الإشادة.

رواية "حبل الروح" (اسمها الأصلي: ثلج القديس بطرس) للكاتب التشيكي النمساوي "ليو بيروتس" – رواية قصيرة قوطية مُتقنة مليئة بالغموض ومُفخّخة بالشكّ بأسلوب سردي مُمتع لمن يهوى هذه الأجواء. ومع ترجمة سلسة بليغة؛ من الصعب ألا تكون هذه الرواية على قائمة قراءة أي قارئ.

Yılın sonuna doğru bu sene okuduğum en iyi kitaplardan biriydi Şeytan Tozu. Ahlaki ikilemler, inanç kavramı, bilime karşı din gibi üst metinlerle dolu olan bir kitabın bence en önemli olan tarafı arka plandaki saplantılı aşktı. Kitapta gerçekle kurgu arasında belirsiz geçişler var ve bu geçişler anlatıcıyı sık sık sorgulamamıza yol açıyor. Anlatıcı olayları uyduruyor mu yoksa hafızasına güvenebilir miyiz bilmiyoruz. Bu açıdan tekinsiz bir metin Şeytan Tozu. Atmosfer ne kadar kasvetli olursa olsun anlatılan hikayenin temposu hiç düşmüyor. Özellikle bilim kurgu okuyucularının seveceğini düşünüyorum. (Almancadan da çok başarılı çevrilmiş, okuması ayrı bir zevk verdi).

I can see why the author of this novel had to leave Germany after its publication in 1933; there's plenty for the new minister of culture to hate here. A terrific short novel with a great idea at its core. The less one knows about the book before reading it, the better, but suffice to say it has elements of Kafka, Expressionist fiction, thrillers, and a dash of SF. Perutz has been somewhat rediscovered in recent years and a fair number of his novels are available in English. I'll be reading more of them.

Çeviri de böyle bir kitabın seviyesini mükemmel yakalamış.

Kitabın içindeki tarihsel bilgiler, politik fikirler ve bilimsel konular birbirleri ile çok güzel harmanlanmış. Kitapta sürekli yükselen bir aksiyon var. Bir tık bilim kurgu havası da vardı. Ama kitabın bence en güzel yanı baştan sona hiç yerini kaybetmemiş olan bir "gizem". Baş kahraman, girdiği komadan uyandığında doktorluk yaptığı köyü hatırlar ve orada yaşadıklarının gerçek olduğunu iddaa eder. Yattığı hastanedeki doktorlar ise baş kahramana kaza geçirdiğini ve gerçek olduğunu sandığı olayların sadece yüksek ateşin neden olduğu rüyalar ve sayıklamalar olduğunu söylerler. Kitabı okurken bir yandan da bu gizemi çözmeye çalışıyor ve hangi tarafın dediklerinin doğru olduğunu bulmaya çalışıyorsunuz.

Dört yıldız vermiş olmamın sebebi ise, kitabın benim hayal ettiğim gibi bitmemiş olması. Okurken keyif aldım ama sonu açık bitti gibi geldi. Spoiler vermemek için fazla açıklamayacağım.

Şeytan Tozu, Leo Perutz'dan okuduğum ilk kitaptı. Yazarın kalemini beğendim. Diğer eserlerini de ilerleyen zamanlarda okumak istiyorum. Kitabın çevirisi gayet başarılı olmuş, akıcılık konusunda hiçbir problemi yoktu. Okumayı düşünenlere öneririm.

Il mio primo Perutz. E mi sa il primo di una serie!
Un racconto nebbioso, freddo, con una luce lattiginosa, il riverbero della neve che brucia gli occhi e che confonde la mente. Un uomo e una donna che si ritrovano, sarà stato il destino? Il volere divino? Oppure una semplice casualità?
Tutto può essere, non è questo in fondo quello che è importante, ma l’atmosfera che si respira. Una tensione verso qualcosa, verso una spiegazione, che non crea angoscia nella lettura, ma un sereno coinvolgimento.
Il dottor Amberg ha davvero vissuto tutto quello che ricorda?
“ Il sogno concede ciò che la vita nella sua avarizia ci nega. . E allora perché svegliarsi se il sogno è così bello, se ti fa raggiungere gli obiettivi di una vita, si chiede il dottore, ritrovatosi all’improvviso in un letto di ospedale con ricordi completamente diversi da quelli che gli vengono descritti? Un puzzle, con pezzi mancanti ma la cui immagine si costruisce nella testa, senza bisogno che si completi nella realtà. E allora penso a quella stanza mediocre in cui il dottore si muove, alla luce del camino scoppiettante che crea un alone in cui in buio si ritira, all’odore di mela candita misto al cloroformio, al fruscio di una vestaglia di seta, alle orme sulla neve, al rilievo in una vetrina che ha la faccia di un Federico “qualunque”, a come “le luci parse del villaggio sembravano scintillare dietro una cortina densa e lattiginosa” , alla nebbia che tutto inghiotte insieme alla neve che ne disperde i contorni.
Una lettura spigolosa ma proprio questa è la sua bellezza.

The premise is an appealing one; Georg Amberg suffers a car accident and is hospitalised in a coma. The novel begins when he awakens after 5 weeks in the coma, but he has recollections of a whole different experience during that time.
Straight away there is a sense of disorientation and that continues for the rest of the book. Amberg senses a conspiracy amongst the doctors and nurses, from whom he recognises several from his on story.
The challenge in Perutz’s story is who the reader should side with, is Amberg delusional? It’s an original psychological mystery with more than a whiff of paranoia.
It is necessary to be aware of the historical context of the book also. Published in 1933 it was labelled as being from a ‘Jewish’ publisher and was banned in Germany.

Rereading this, I was struck by how far ahead of other writers Perutz was. This is borderline science fiction, and almost psychedelic, both predicting LSD and touching upon themes that would later be more fully explored in Philip K. Dick's books. A bloody incredible AND highly entertaining book from an unjustly forgotten author.

Weird and bizarre are the first words that come to mind to describe this. I also think it would be hard to find a more unreliable narrator. Some GR readers have this shelved as mystery, and I admit to be influenced by such. It is not a traditional mystery in that there is no murder or other crime and there is no detective set out to solve one. Instead there are at least two possible realities. Which reality are we to believe? I was able to summon a satisfactory conclusion. Other readers might decide on a different and just as satisfactory conclusion.

This was banned by the Nazis. It isn't clear to me why except that there is one reference to supporter of the Reds in Russian, and certainly they would have been enemies of the Germans in 1933. But it wasn't a bit nor important reference, so maybe I wouldn't have made an attentive Nazi censor.

There is—or was—a wheat disease that was often described in earlier centuries and was known by a different name wherever it appeared. In Spain it was called Mary Magdalene’s Plait, in Alsace it was known as Poor Soul’s Dew. In Adam of Cremona’s Physician’s Book it was called Misericord Seed, and in the Alps it was called St Peter’s Snow.

One part of this story suggests eating the diseased wheat has an hallucinogenic affect. Wikipedia references critic Alan Piper who believed that the novel was decades ahead of its time due to the description of a hallucinogenic drug derived from an ergot fungus 10 years before the discovery of LSD. Again, which reality are we to believe?

I'm glad I read this, though I doubt I'll be picking up any others by this author. I need my reading to feel more firmly based in reality and some have described Perutz as a fantasy author. Perhaps the fantasy is more real-world based than I think of fantasy being, but I'm still not one to go out on a limb, even barely.

Elbette bunun patolojik boyutlara ulaştığı sınırlar vardır ama bunlar çok muğlaktır, hatta bence sandığımızdan daha da muğlak. Şeytanın Tozu, iki muhtemel gerçekliğin olduğu bir kurguyla din, inanç, siyaset, kitlelerin manipülasyonu gibi temaları yirminci yüzyıla yön vermiş ideolojiler ekseninde irdeliyor. Komadan uyanan bir doktorun kendi gerçekliği ve başkalarının ona gerçek diye dayattığı senaryolar arasında gidip gelirken, 1930 yılının Almanya’sından dünyaya bakıyor ve distopik de sayılabilecek ancak yaşananlar göz önünde bulundurulduğunda gerçeğe de oldukça yakın olaylara tanıklık ediyoruz. Oldukça sürükleyici, temposu hiç düşmeyen bir kurgu, okuru etkisi alan bir atmosfer ve akıcı bir anlatımla muazzam sorgulamaların işlendiği bir novella. Çok beğendim. 4.5/5

Fans of Karel Capek and Franz Kafka will like this offering from another scion of the Austro Hungarian Empire. Saint Peter’s Snow is a very short read, but one that I reread to enjoy it all over again. You’re not too far off if the title suggests cocaine use, but it goes much further than that.

It’s apparent from the beginning that there is a big plot twist coming up. But Perutz only teases us while he develops his tale. Several characters, a young medical doctor and his love interest (an attractive scientific researcher), the local aristocratic landowner and his retinue, a Russian descended from Rurik (the 9th century Varangian progenitor of the Russian nation) and a local parish priest, among others, seem to suggest that something very significant is in the offing.

It seems from the beginning that there is a hidden story involved; some characters appear in different roles and environments. Some readers may foresee the ultimate resolution, but it only struck me in the final few pages.

A highly recommended one day read.

Another excellent, cerebral thriller by Perutz. Lots of deliciously arcane material mixed in with a taut tale of totalitarian visions and fever dreams. Questions abound, ambiguity endures, and this is so much more satisfying than a too-tidy ending.
