Falling in love with the wrong person can be disastrous. When you find the right one, though, celestial bodies will literally line up to smooth your path. Siani’s mercury has been in retrograde for what seems like forever. She loves her job, but her boss is a lazy jerk. Family is a foreign idea, and her love life sucks. There’s also a new tenant in her house… but we won’t go there. Tris has spent the last five years paying for a mistake he didn’t make. Going forward, all he wants to do is get his life back on track and stay out of Siani’s way. However, things don’t always work out the way we want them to. He’s sort of a hero, and she kinda needs saving. Can they hold each other up without falling in love?
I'm just a girl in love with literature. My love affair with romance novels started with I was 13 and has flourished into an obsession. I've always been a writer. Even when I was a little girl, I always had a pen and a notebook poised to let something out. You Make Me Better is my first project that will be published and I am STOKED. My goal is to write stories surrounding positive black love, with a little humor tossed in.
I Didn't Mean To Fall In Love was a phenomenal book! It starts out as a lighthearted romance then, it flips and gut punches you with some heavy trauma. Tris is fresh out of jail after being locked up for five years for something he didn't do. His favorite cousin Lira convinces her BFF Siani to allow Tris to stay in her house when he's released from jail. Siani takes an instant dislike to Tris because, his time in jail reminds her of her ex-boyfriend. As far as Siana was concerned, all felons are the same. Tris and Siana had some serious issues. Tris took a drug charge for his mama who, herself, is a drug addict with mental health issues. Tris has been running Charlese down and trying to get her help damn near his entire life but, she doesn't want any parts of his help. Siani was way more broken than I initially thought. Not only is she sleeping with her boss but, she's also doing his work and letting him take credit for it. She knows that relationship was going nowhere but, she truly felt like Russell was the best she could do. On top of that, she still grieving the death of her baby from 13 years ago. His death was pretty traumatic and she hasn't gotten over it. All of this cultivated into Siani becoming a workaholic and a borderline alcoholic. Thank God there was a felon named Tris living in her basement. These two really didn't know how much they needed each other. Tris was the best guy ever and, when Siani finally stopped judging him, she realized that too. There's not enough good things I could say about I Didn't Mean To Fall In Love. Between the plot twists, the WTF moments, and the camaraderie between the characters, you will love this book. I highly recommend you add it to you TBR.
Wow! This was such a phenomenal story and writing. AshleyNicole is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I love her ability to blend highly emotional scenarios and humor in her books.
I felt connect to these characters so much that a point I felt like i was part of the story. My heart broke severely times reading this, especially when Sinai witness what Shem did with that baby and then with Tris and his mother 💔😭 I had to take breaks to be able to get through this.
Sinai and Tris’ story is a gut wrenching and heartbreaking story but a very beautiful one nonetheless. What these two went through will forever stay with me especially Sinai because no one should ever have to go through what she went through. I’m glad they found love and their HEA in each other
Loved this book! Another one from Ms. Ashley Nicole.
Siani came across as a bougie rude sadity bi#$h. I immediately thought what is wrong with her?? She showed her whole judgmental as$ upon meeting Tris. Yes, he was just fresh out, but the attitude was on 10 and unnecessary when she could have just said no. Tris had the temperament of a saint. He seemed to take everything in stride, unless he needed to protect his own. He wasn't really stuttin Siani's rude self and was making the best out of the cards he had been dealt. Until Russell (Siani's situationship) with his square self crossed a line and he felt the need to protect her and their relationship shifted. At first I didn't understand why Siani was wasting her time with Russell's corny, lazy, abusive of power as$. Once her trauma was revealed it all made sense, even her rude actions made sense. In the midst of all this Tris is handling his own trauma. They manage to be each other's support system and unexpectedly fall in love. The ending was so sweet and I loved their progression.
Ashley Nicole does a great job humanizing her characters as they deal with tough topics, and balances it with humor. Great read!
Ashley stuck her foot in this one (hopefully y'all are familiar with that saying). I went into this book thinking that it would be a comedic romance and even though it turned out to not be that it did have some comedic points. It was somewhat of an enemy to lovers romance and as the couple got to know each other, there was a lot of funny and witty banter. There are a couple of potential triggers so please check out the author's "A Word" page at the beginning of the book.
Siani and Lira have been best friends since the age of 17. Lira begs Siani for the ultimate favor, to sponsor her cousin Tris, who was being released from jail after a 5-year sentence. Prior to an arranged visitation at the jail Siani had never met Tris. On the strength of her best friend's word and one visitation Siani opens her home to Tris.
Siani seems to be a very independent, private and closed off person. With the exception of her best friend Lira and the pitiful excuse of a relationship, I mean sexuationship with her trifling and lazy boss, Siani seems to have no one. You can tell from the very beginning though that Siani has some very serious issues that torment her daily. Tris, forever the protector and hero is at the end of a 5-year bid, paying for a mistake that he didn't make. All he wants to do now is get his life back and stay out of Siani's way. Siani is very rude and critical of Tris from day one. However, Tris easily dismantles every preconceived notion that Siani has of him just by simply being himself. Sis had so much egg to clean off her face.
I was so sad by the individual trauma that Siani and Tris went through. At one point I had to break out the tissue and did my best not to "ugly cry". When I learned of the trauma that Siani went through, I had to take back every negative thought I had about her. Her story really tugged at my heartstrings. I am glad though that through counseling and the love of an exceptional man, Siani was able to heal and love again. It's often true that hurt people hurt people but this couple was able to take that hurt and turn it into love and healing. I love the foundation and life that the two were able to create for themselves.
** Edited to add: Lira who started off as an integral part of the book disappeared somewhere around the time that Siani and Tris's relationship started to heat up. I found myself looking for her in the remainder of the book. I wished that Ashley would have stated that she was on vacation or had moved away instead of just omitting her from the remainder of the book.
Wow. AshleyNicole is such an amazing storyteller. She was able to bring tragedy, love, and a little bit of humor together so beautifully. My heart was so broken for both Siani and Tris. They needed one another, and through that, they fell in love without even realizing it. This was an AMAZING gut-wrenching, lovely read. This might be my favorite book by AshleyNicole. 10/10 Highly recommend this.
Leave it to AshleyNicole to give you an rich emotional read in less than 200 pages.
How did she get so much accomplished in so few pages! This was so well written, it felt like a full novel. Typically when I read a novella this good, I think ‘if only it wasn’t so short’; but not this. With the time hop in the epilogue, I felt like we got an idea of these characters future. Which is important to me, considering what we knew about them both was all the pain they experienced prior to finding each other.
Tris was perfection! Now THAT’S a good man Savannah.
I have to say I didn’t see Sinai secret coming. I think because of the trigger warning, i automatically assumed that was pertaining to her trauma. And boy was I wrong?! Get your tissues out when you find out.
IMO this author’s pen is unmatched… she gave us such a well paced and written story. A full, romantic, inspiring story in less than 200 pages.
Oh and the cameo of my faves Les and Talia, was the perfect cherry on top. And I see Dr. Tamra still out here saving lives.
Guess what I'm doing??? Go ahead, guess... I'm standing here giving AshleyNicole a round of applause for this one. I loved everything about this book and truly didn't want it to end.
Tris and Siani were some of the most complex, yet accomplished characters I've ever had the pleasure of reading. They were bent, but not broken. They've experienced loss, but weren't lost. They both wanted to pour their everything into the same person, but ended up filling each other instead. They were everything that the other needed, yet they had no idea. But the universe looked out for them and once Tris became Siani's protector, and Siani began to nurture Tris, nothing could stop them.
AshleyNicole has easily soared to the top as one of my favorites and I never thought another couple of hers would take the place of Streets and Sienna, but these two have inched by them just a smidget. She's found her sweet spot, I cant wait to see what she has up next. If you're looking for something unexpected, Tris and Siani were it. Happy Reading!
Idk why it is but I never am prepared for Ashley Nicole’s stories. They are heavy but beautiful. I enjoyed the don’t judge a book by it’s cover theme because you truly don’t know what someone is going through or hiding. Tris was bae and I honestly loved the twists in finding out the real on him. Siani lowkey was rude as hell when they first met but I’m so glad she let her guard down and with good reason! Tris was going to protect her regardless! The epilogue was beautiful! Definitely recommend this book but recommend reading the triggers at the beginning! Book is heavy on the emotion at times!
I have never been so on the edge with an Ashley Nicole story like this one. It was so good, and I wasn't ready for the end. The story had me on an emotional roller coaster ride. It was just so good. Did I say that already?
Round of applause for Ashley Nicole. This was such an amazing heartfelt read. My emotions were in shambles and tears were shed for both Tris and Siani. I for sure fell in love with their story! An easy 5 stars!!
Super kind and generous Tris, carried the world on his shoulders, trying to support and protect his family. His mother's addiction caused him sleepless nights and a whole lot more than that, but he refused to turn his back on her.
And then to make matters worse, Siani, his cousin's best friend and Tris' new landlord, sat in judgment on Tris like it was her job! Fortunately, Miss AshleyNicole kept unfolding both of their horrendous childhoods, until it all made sense.
Shocking and surprising suspense is woven all through this amazing journey!
This was a great story that I truly enjoyed. Tris was a patient man in the beginning, especially when he dealt with Sanai. Good background information on the characters helped understand their present day dilemmas. Well written
So whenever Ms. Nicole has a release my advice is read immediately. Who else would take a convicted felon and turn him into the sexiest, most charming, severely protective man ever. Yes she did and he is one for the record books. Tris is complicated with a capital C but so enduring even the reader will fall in love. This story is full of ah moments and WTF situations that when you arrive at the end you go back and make sure this character actually exists. I loved this story and that old saying never judge a book by its cover is so true when Tris enters Siani’s life and blows that bitch up for the better 🥰🥰🔥🔥
Tris was not who I thought he was and he shut me and Siani UP 😂. I was so glad when Lira and Siani opened up about their past issues. Sometimes we as women especially black women like to bury our emotions and keep going as if all is well but deep down we're broken.
I knew from the beginning, that I would love Tris! A heart the size of Texas! He loved, cared for and sacrificed for his family without batting an eye. Siani! You knew from her persona, that life had not been kind to her. That she had been through some ish, for her to behave the way she did. But that bombshell! Well, just damn! These two deeply scarred souls predestined to be together. I was so missed at Siani, for being so hateful toward Tris for no reason. But True took those jabs like a champ. When the ice around Siani's heart began to melt, and she gained understanding; the stars aligned! Loved them together. This one has me crying, and the gasping in shock. Great read! 👍👍👍
An excellent love story. Hell, it was almost a coming of age story. The characters were wonderfully fleshed out and the story flowed well. I was smiling by the end.
Not sure what I expected but this story is mainly based around past/present traumas, ptsd and healing. I enjoyed reading and got me in my feelings. Love Siani and Tris together. Hea
Such a good story. Tris and Siani's relationship grew into something so beautiful. I loved how Tris was just an all around good guy. His unconditional love for his mother was the highlight of this story imo. Siani's hate towards felons was warranted but I'm so glad Tris helped her grow. I also liked the sessions Siani had with her therapist. Russell was a trip! He got what he deserved. I loved it!
I loved how AshleyNicole weaved so many heavy topics into such a cohesive story: grief, mental illness, childhood trauma, alcoholism, sexual assault, and life after being locked up.

Perfectly light contemporary romance with heavy topics and themes
I respect Ashley Nicole's pen because at this point I know her romances are going to be to the point, with good sex, good yearning, decent communication, humor, adults acting like adults all mixed in with some serious trauma. This not really enemies-to-loversREMIX is an ex-con needing a favor as a place to stay upon release x coldhearted mean "landlord" trying to help a friend out. Si has every reason, once the layers pull back to feel a way about certain felons. And Tris could be bitter or spiteful about serving time for a crime he didn't commit and the trauma from his childhood. Instead we get a clpped paced romance between two lost souls who didn't even realize they were lost. Si didn't annoy me even though she should have. She was a little mean, rude, and gruff in the beginning but again Ashley Nicole did the smart thing by introducing the characters and world through the full heavy weight that Si carries. By the end of her first chapter I needed a nap. I understood that type of trapped world weariness that only comes when you are just existing in life and not truly living. Tris introduction chapter was expertly done as well. You could feel the weight of the prison walls but the anticipation of freedom. You could see how men fall through the holes of that environment and how things could go left so quickly for things beyond your control. With the players in place and the stage set this close-proximity romance wastes no time showing us the hidden layers and depths of the players involved. I truly enjoyed this read. As always by the HEA I am a grinning fool because I love seeing how full circle the characters come. I love seeing the win and I love seeing how each one made the other better. I also appreciate in an Ashley Nicole story that the romances are isolated. Once the mains get introduced the story is centralized on them and how they are growing and building. I love that so much.
This book, while written very beautifully, has what I believe to be major triggers in it. Read with caution.
One thing I'm coming to expect from AshleyNicole is humor, family love, hot sex scenes 😏, witty characters, and so much more. While that was definitely given, there was a rather new dynamic in this book that was somewhat painful to read, yet so soul bearing that I couldn't help but continue on.
I Loved reading about and getting to know Tris and Siani. They were 2 heartbroken souls that needed each other, yet didn't know it. Tris' demeanor and laid back vibes were everything. The way he loved hard and cared for the women in his life was so endearing. The issue with his mom was lovely yet so sad. He was a great man and his care for his sick mom showed just how much love he truly had for her. The situation with his cousin, Lira, was a lot. He made sure his Uncle would never hurt another soul.
One thing I adored about Tris was his loyalty. He didn't know Siani, yet was willing to risk his freedom for her, even after how she initially treated him. Really good man.
Siani's story truly broke my heart. From her family, to her babies daddy, Shem, to her son, to her ex Russell...it was a lot for her to have to endure, yet I'm glad she sought counseling and decided to remove herself from the toxic lifestyle that wasn't serving her. I was upset at how she treated Tris at first, then as more of her story came out, I got it. He was a trigger for her, even if she didn't know his full story. I'm so glad she let her guard down and saw the great man that he was. After just the experience of going through what she did with her babies Dad, I'm not sure how she didn't completely loose her mind😯. So sad. That whole Russell debacle was crazy; I'm glad his dad saw the skilled worker in her and stood by her during that whole ordeal. Russell was a simp; just a sad waste of a man🤦🏾♀️.
This book made me view AshleyNicole in a new light. She was already a dynamic author and this book brought her new heights. Not too long, not too short, not too much detail, yet just enough to get you what you need and have you wanting more. Phenomenal.
Though entertaining, this story was definitely not realistic.
A lot of suspended disbelief required to enjoy this book. Siani's ongoing relationship with her boss/boyfriend made no sense, Tris's reason for incarceration made no sense, and among the other disconnects, Lira (Siani's best friend and Tris' cousin) not telling Siani why Tris was locked up, made less than no sense. And, I must say that the romance between our hero and heroine was extremely weak.
Dr. Tamra's appearance is the best part of this book. I absolutely love that AshleyNicole puts her in so many of her book. She's my favorite fictional therapist - wise far beyond her years. And the drop in cameo of Talia, from Studio Sessions and Directors Cut, was great. Those were not my favorite books, because Talia was my least favorite heroine of any AshleyNicole book, but I have to admit that it was nice seeing her again. I l finished those books feeling like Talia needed lots of continued therapy. Glad to see she's still getting it..lol.
'I Didn't Mean To Fall In Love' was a quick read with a few nice jewels in it. The best jewel of all was the love Tris had for his mom - truly heartwarming.
Tris and Siani got off on a rocky start but they ended in each other arms. Siani did not care for Tris initially because of her past. Tris proved Siani wrong with all of his gentlemen characteristics. He was really wearing the weight of his mother and cousin's burdens on his shoulders. I love how he made sure to help out his cousin, Lira after she held him down for 5 years. He brought her a better car as soon as he got to a dealership. The love he had for his mother had no boundaries. He did everything he could possibly do to get her sober and medically compliant.
The ending of the story was incredible, they had started on their own little family. Tris and Siani were working their dream careers. Although, they both had a rough past neither let it define them. They also acknowledged Dariel, Siani's oldest child that got killed as their daughters' older brother. They put his picture up along with the other family portraits.
Great job Ms. Nicole this was a fantastic read. Yes, download and enjoy it.
I love to see growth in an author. I have read all of AshleyNicole's books and her storytelling has blossom. Tris and Siani are two characters that have some things in common but their lives took on different path. Tris who was a street hugger turn upstanding guy found himself at a crossroads and ended up on the wrong side of the law. Sinai's life was no peaches and creme but she tried to navigate her new life accepting less than what she deserves because she thinks that she doesn't deserve better. A favor from a friend brings Tris and Sinai together but was it the right decision.
Tris is one of those characters that you instantly fall in love with. Siani is bitter but once you understand why it makes her easy to love. I love this book and the chemistry between the characters. But what I love more is the backstory of Tris and Siani. Bravo AshleyNicole Bravo!!!
Wow! Tris was amazing and proved that you can't judge someone based on circumstance or paint all men with the same brush because you know what you think you know. That man had the patience and kindness of a saint! My own patience with Siani had just about run out, but I held on because I knew there was a lot more behind her behavior. Nothing could prepare you for what she went through, but she was too young to have to deal with that kind of tragic pain and loss. The fact that she was able to function even a little bit screams strength and survival. Both of these characters had less than desirable childhoods. Even Siani's friend, Lira who was also Tris's cousin had terrible things she endured as a young girl. Of course her cousin Tris rode to the rescue for her. This man had so much goodness in his heart. Him and Siani together were so sexy and funny. I absolutely adored them. Loved that epilogue!❤
ALL THE FEELS!! Emotional Roller Coaster... but the good kind!
Man, this book took a turn and got super freaking deep!
It started out somewhat light; you kind of knew what direction Tris and Siani's relationship was going in, and then POW/BAM/BOOM ... a heartbreaking past is revealed. I cried for Siani as if she were a real person I knew and was friends with.
Tris, the forever Knight and Shining Amour, or Knight and Shining Crooked Skull Cap, always came through and saved the day for everyone! His heart was full of pure gold and love.
Overall, I loved this story! Loved Tris and Siani's relationship and LOVED LOVED LOVED their happily ever after!
AshleyNicole is always on point with her stories... Now, how about the rest of the Mason Clan, sis... HAHA. J/K!! I couldn't leave without mentioning that! HAHA.
This was just too cute but nothing beyond that. I mean the epilogue was better than the whole book. Siani as dealt such a bad Han since little yet she made do, pushed and came out on top. Tris, wow what a man (needed a little bit more description of him) but still what a man. Strong, extremely loyal, caring and down right an overall good guy. This story was so plain cut and so bland and yet because of how MS. Nicole's penmanship is so on point, it was able to be twisted up and cam out cute, very cute.... Nothing major in it, missing major romance but because of the context it was unable to be more than that. I mean, no explanation on why she never spoke to her parents, no explanation why she doesn't want to speak to them and these are a few issues that came up...but oh well, as I said it was still cute...
Romance fiction. This was a nice read. Tris is out on probation. His cousin Lira turns to her bestie for him a place to reside (since her apt complex policy doesn't house felons). Siani has an empty apt type basement, but she's not cool with the idea of harboring a felon. Since Lira is her bestie, she agrees but who says she has to be nice about it. Due to her traumatic past, all felons are the same. She's bitter towards Tris and states her ground rules from the start. She lets him know if he breathes too loud--He's out.
Siani is dealing with a lousy bf and grasping to deal with a troubled past. An existing workaholic who may be able to find a friend in her new tenant or he just may prove to be trouble as she's labelled him.
