I have never given a one star rating for a book, but there is always a first time for everything.
I described reading this book as doing a never ending treadmill with no speed increase and no time limit. It is torment, as simple as that.
I skip-read the last 100 pages because finally after 300 pages, I can say for sure that I am not getting anything from this book. My hope of learning something about Bukit Brown vanished on p.100, when I realized that the author is not doing any descriptive work whatsoever for this book.

I don’t know how I feel about the characters nor the story, because they all came in long-loop snippets that has no rhyme nor reason. PoVs should be the least part to criticized from a book but apparently the author also decided that everyone should chipped in on the PoV, even mid-paragraph. So when someone was talking, I shouldn’t know WHO, because the PoV changes so rapidly until I had a headache for trying to keep up.

Writing style aside, the plot is also weak (was there even a plot?). The storyline is so boring until when I skip read this, I could actually still keep up. Of course the ending was also far from satisfying, but I think it was because I have had enough.

Save your money. Skip this one out.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to manage my anger.

3.5
I was intrigued by this book. A friend recommended it to me with great reviews so perhaps I had high expectations.
There’s clearly a lot of work gone into it but I mostly felt confused whilst reading it. A few elements of the time travel just didn’t make sense to me. I don’t understand how certain characters lives didn’t alter course by having a strange woman pop up in different eras and make some very influential changes whilst she visited that time!! It felt flawed.
However, I felt like I learnt a thing or two about the history of Penang and Singapore. I enjoyed the descriptions of familiar places in their historic settings.
I also wonder if I struggled because of how the book has been translated. Some of the sentences don’t read very easily for me. I’m glad I’ve made it to the end because it felt like a real effort to get there.
3.5 feels generous but the book’s been on my mind since I finished, so there’s definitely something compelling about it, I just can’t figure it all out yet!

Wow!! That was a quite wonderful experience. I feel like I am emerging from a spell, I have been solidly enthralled for two days, and didn’t want it to end, lol. I love time travel stories, recreating past worlds and seeing them through eyes that don’t belong, and I loved that this story was grounded in my local area and places I know, and was well researched. It is not deep meaningful classic literature, but it’s fun and interesting and very moving and was a totally absorbing read.

I believe it was originally written in Korean, and the author later produced this English version. There are several moments in the book where the choice of vocabulary is not quite right - not wrong exactly, but as if it wasn’t the right pick from the thesaurus. This just made me smile, and didn’t distract from the flow of the story, which has great momentum.

Thank you, Sun Jung! 😊

Interesting at first but later got bored. It seemed random / no clear plot connection. Some were hard to read cos of the font used ( weird choice ) in e end gave up. Didnt complete it.
