A few days ago someone laughed over the title of the book “Meri Jaan Ke Dushman” - (Foes After My Life), which I was reading then. It is a pulp fiction novel written by the uncrowned king of Hindi Pulp Fiction Novelist Surender Mohan Pathak and was first published sometime in 1981. In an interview, the author has confessed that he has not been good when it comes to choosing the titles of his novels. So I decided to write a review of the Novel.
Surender Mohan Pathak (SMP) is a veteran of Hindi pulp fiction and has been writing for more than 50 years. His first story was published in the year 1957 in Manohar Kahaniya titled “57 Saal Puraana Aadmi” - A 57 Year Old Man. During these years he has authored around 280 novels, most of which revolves around the basic theme of crime fiction - “whodunit”. “MJKD” is 11th in Thriller series.
The protagonist of “Meri Jaan Ke Dushman” is Anoop Singh, who, after spending last 4 years in Indore as driver in a transport company, comes to a city named Vishalgarh. He gets employment in Sabbarwal Transport Company as a driver. Geeta – the owner of the Transport Company, who resides with her younger brother Sushil, is a sincere young lady and was forced to take on the family transport business after the sudden demise of her father. Chaman Lal – an old driver of Sabbarwal Transport Company, is the only person on which she can trust.
Four years ago, there was a simple, old fashioned bank cashier named Jogender Kumar Batra, a bachelor, living a simple, monotonous but peaceful life. Then one day there was a heist took place in his bank wherein one of the robbers was involved in a duel with the guard of the bank and while he killed the guard, he was unable to conceal an identification mark, which became visible to everyone present there in the Bank. The robbers fled, but the one with the identification mark on his leg, was caught by the Police and was tried for robbery and murder. When every other witness refrained himself from identifying the accused, Jogender Batra came forward and as an eye – witness to the crime, identified the accused. As a result the arrested criminal was tried and later on executed.
However, after the execution of the arrested robber, Jogender Batra was targeted by others involved in the robbery and was started receiving threats for his life. He also got Police protection. But one day, his colleague was killed by a bomb, planted with the bike of Jogender Batra. Considering continuous threat to his life, one day, Batra vanished from Vishalgarh, without leaving any information behind. No points for guessing that today's Anoop Singh was yesteryear's Bank Cashier Jogender Kumar Batra. He is back in his city with completely changed outlook, name and job and is out in search of the foes, who were after his life four years ago.
How Anoop Singh tries to find out those who were after his life when he was Jogender Kumar Batra, how Anoop Kumar, was tricked by criminals in a plot to execute the murder of another businessman running a transport company, how Anoop Kumar was included in the plot for another bank heist and how he takes revenge from all those who had done wrong to him is the complete story of the novel.
The twist in the tale at appropriate places makes the novel interesting throughout. There is emotional/romantic angle too in the novel. The characters are developed very nicely and appear to be real life characters. First person narration of the story makes it more interesting. This novel is certainly one of the best creations of SMP - the legend of Hindi Pulp Fiction. At present, the novel is not available in market, but if anyone gets a copy of this novel anywhere, grab it at any cost and read it. I bet, after reading, he would start searching for more novels of SMP.

यह देख कर मैं बहुत ही ज्यादा प्रसन्न हूँ कि वर्षों तक हिंदी साहित्य से दूर-दूर रहने के बाद आखिरकार मैं हिंदी किताबों की तरफ झुकाव महसूस कर रही हूँ। स्कूल के समय में हिंदी साहित्य मेरा पसंदीदा विषय होने के बावजूद जब शौक के लिए पढने का समय आया तो मैंने अंग्रेजी को चुना। इसका मुख्य कारण मेरी समझ से यह है कि मेरे लिए किताबें एक अलग दुनिया में जाने का माध्यम हैं, जहाँ हकीकत का कोई लेना देना नहीं है। हिंदी अपनी मातृभाषा होने के कारण इन किताबों में दर्शाए गए किरदार व घटनाएँ कही न कही जानी पहचानी होती ही थी, जो कि उस समय में मुझे नहीं चाहिए था। इसके अलावा दूसरा बड़ा कारण यह है कि जिन किताबों के बारे मे मैं तब सुना करती थी वे मुख्यतः जटिल हिंदी में रहती थी और ज्यादातर सांसारिक मुद्दों के बारे में चर्चा करती नज़र आती थी, जिससे कि मैं बचना चाहती थी।
अगर सच कहूँ तो अभी भी कुछ बदला नहीं है। अभी भी किताबें मेरे लिए काल्पनिक दुनिया में जाने का ज़रिया हैं। पर मेरी दूसरी परेशानी दूर की है नई हिंदी में लिखी किताबों ने।
इस श्रेणी में सबसे पहली किताब, जो कि मेरी आज तक की सबसे पसंदीदा किताब है, है सत्य व्यास द्वारा लिखी "चौरासी"। इस किताव से मेरा परिचय आज से शायद 3-4 वर्ष पूर्व हुआ था। उनके स्वच्छंद लेखन और खूबसूरत कहानी ने मेरा मन इस प्रकार मोह लिया कि आज तक भी मैं उस जैसी कहानी दूसरी नहीं ढूँढ पाई हूँ। इसके बाद मैंने उनके द्वारा ही लिखित "बनारस टॉकीज़" पढ़ी, जो कि चौरासी से बहुत ही भिन्न मगर बहुत ही मनोरंजक थी।
इसके बाद से ऐसी कोई हिंदी किताब मेरी नज़र में आई नहींं। या शायद मैंने पर्याप्त प्रयास नहीं किए क्योंकि स्वप्निल अंग्रेज़ी साहित्य तो मेरे पास था ही। लेकिन हाल में समय होने के बावजूद अपने गो-टू अंग्रेजी जॉनर्स में भी मुझे किताबें नहीं भा रही थी। फिर मेरे हाथ लगी ये किताब और निखिल सचान द्वारा लिखित "यूपी 65", जिसे कि मैं साथ-साथ पढ रही हूँ। इन दोनो ही किताबों ने मेरा ध्यान आकस्मिक हिंदी साहित्य की ओर आकर्षित किया है। और इसका नतीजा यह है कि हिंदी किताब का रिव्यू मैं अंग्रेजी में न लिखकर हिंदी में ही लिखने का प्रयास कर रही हूँ। इसके लिए मैं नई हिंदी और नई हिंदी के लेखकों की बहुत-बहुत शुक्रगुज़ार हूँ।

सर्वप्रथम तो यह शीर्षक और कवर इतना क्रिंजी क्यों है ये मेरी समझ से परे है। तो मैं पाठकों से यह गुज़ारिश करना चाहूंगी कि कृपया इसके कवर पर न जाएँ क्योंकि ये पुस्तक कमाल की है। मुझे सामान्यतः चूहे-बिल्ली या चोर-पुलिस वाले उपन्यास पसंद नहीं आते। इनकी बेकार की व्याख्याएँ मुझे बहुत ज्यादा बोरिंग लगती हैं। परंतु मैं खुद हैरान हूँ कि मुझे यह किताब कैसे इतनी पसंद आई। इतनी कि मैं उनका अगला उपन्यास उठाने को आतुर हूँ। इसीलिए मेरी ओर से मैं इसे 100 प्रतिशत रेकमेंड करती हूँ।

अजमेरसिंह के मरने के बाद बत्रा का अनूप बन जाना पसंद आया, 40% तक किताब बहुत बढ़िया है. कहानी को बहुत ज्यादा पॉलिश औऱ सुधार की जरुरत थी जिसमे गीता के साथ climax भी predictable हो जाता है. कुल मिलाकर सिर्फ एक बार पढ़ सकते हैँ.
