Overcoming Tendonitis: A Systematic Approach to the Evidence-Based Treatment of Tendinopathy

Rate this book
Tendonitis is one of the most misdiagnosed and poorly understood injuries that athletes and workers may encounter in their lifetime. Even the word "tendonitis" itself is a misnomer because from the research we understand that tendinopathy is primarily a non-inflammatory proliferation disorder with minimal to no inflammation. It seems everyone has an opinion on what to do about tendinopathy from rest to ice to old wives tales to get this pesky injury to go away. This book seeks to change that by taking an in-depth look at one of the most commonly diagnosed orthopaedic conditions and provides a systematic approach to its resolution.

Overcoming Tendonitis is a multi-faceted book that covers all topics related to tendinopathy from understanding the best available scientific research to relating the highly trained clinical rehabilitation experience its authors. It delves into the physiological understanding and process of tendinopathy to explain why the function and signs and symptoms of the tendon may differ between stages. It takes a look at the myths surrounding tendinopathy and the pain neuroscience education that can often make the rehabilitation process more complicated. It also gives guidance to patients and medical practitioners to comprehend an overview of the most scientifically accurate recommendations for treatment application. This book is a must-have manual for clinicians who are interested in comparing the efficacy of the multitude of interventions available in today's rehabilitation landscape. It is a useful tool for patients who are experiencing tendon issues and are in need of direction for their rehabilitation in conjunction with their physical therapist. If you or someone you know are one of the millions of individuals who has dealt with the confusing, frustrating, and painful diagnosis of "tendonitis," this book is for you.

A great examination of tendinopathy with a focus on outcomes based on scientific studies. In this book Low provides an overview of the major types of tendinopathy, their causes, symptoms, and treatments.
The book opens with an examination of the different type of studies that will be referenced in the book and describes the level of reliability the results will suggest. He then goes on to meticulously examine the process of tendon degeneration and the different stages of degeneration a tendon progresses through. This opening portion of the book reads a bit like a medical journal but Low does a good job of making the information digestible (despite the "layman" explanations even requiring some googling).
The book includes an explanation of tendinopathy pain and what that pain means for each individual, before, during, and after rehabilitation. This was great information that I never received while dealing with tendinopathy. I was always told that pain = bad during my physical therapy. Low explains the neurological process behind pain and how to identify and discern expected pain during rehabilitation versus agitating pain that leads to exacerbated tendon issues.
The later part of the book includes guidance for therapy practices and physical therapy exercises that can be utilized for the major types of tendinopathy.
This is a book that would be great for anyone currently dealing with tendinopathy and would be a valuable resource for anyone currently undergoing physical therapy for tendon issues.

Absolutely amazing book!

It is jam-packed with useful info and a nice quick read... no diluting of information simply to make the book longer like so many other books out there.

With any sort of self-help book I'll use a highlighter pen to mark the important bits, and with this one I found myself highlighting nearly everything lol

I have been suffering from tricep tendonitis for over 8 years and it has been completely ruining my life, I've seen a number of different physios about it and also spent countless hours / days doing my own research, and yet here I am, still injured and unable to live my life properly or do the things I enjoy (or used to enjoy)

I already had a lot of knowledge about tendonitis/osis before reading this, like eccentrics / HSR, isometrics, the tendonitis continuum and all that... I could definitely improve my injury but I still didnt know enough to rid myself of it completely. I would always end up back at square one at some point.

After reading this, I now feel like this book has filled in all the gaps and Im ready to give it another go... I'll report back when / if I ever get better!

Excellent overview on tendon issues. Low provides a survey of most conventional (and unconventional) treatments as well as their scientific evidence. Most surprisingly, surgery has mixed results and should only be considered as a last result.

As someone who has been struggling with tricep tendinosis for over a year, I was at my wits end. Information on the web is sparse on this condition. I was lucky enough to find the subreddit, overcoming gravity, where Steven Low provided tons of great info on tendinopathies. The book goes into even more detail and is easily worth the $5 I paid on Amazon for the kindle version.

Definitely check this out of you have any kind of tendon issue. It may just save you a trip to the operating table.

Ah, Steven Low. What else I can say of him that has not been said to death? Everything he does is absolutely gold. He is even that good that he answers even the most mundane question about his books and general fitness on his subreddit, and is the most active professional giving professional advice for free on those topics. He deserves all the good ratings this book, and every other, has and more.

Great read. Skip to the end if you don't want the science and you just want the protocols to follow. The exercises prescribed have helped my tendonitis considerably.
