Spirals is a collection of poetry, short fiction, and nonfiction that features multiple works by eleven authors in the Northern Utah writing community. The book includes ideas both real and imagined, humor and fear, lighthearted stories and darker tales, and the distant future and nostalgic past. Authors include award-winners, genre writers, humorists, poets, and playwrights, namely E.B. Wheeler, Keri Montgomery, McKel Jensen, Dede Mattix, Kathy Davidson, Betti Avari, Mike Nelson, Rachael Jessop, Alice M. Batzel, Valerie Odenthal, and Steve Odenthal.
This book of prose and poetry is written by eleven uniquely different authors. The variety of writing engages a wide-reaching audience. Mike Nelson's story, THE HITCHER, left me looking over my shoulder, and I can still smell the stench he described. The next time I see a hitchhiker, I have no doubt his story will vividly come to mind. Just as surely, I'll recollect Kathy Davidson's FLASH ANTS the next time I encounter pesky ants and desperately want to get rid of them. However, I certainly wouldn't use her calculated analytical approach! In contrast, multiple poetic contributions to this anthology transport me to a different time and place, and I'm intrigued to spend time in each. Laughter, nostalgia, insightful introspection, and a bit of eerie speculation stretches the senses of the reader in various other contributions within this collection of creative writings.
SPIRALS offers an engaging reading experience and would be a complement to any personal/home library.
(Note: I am one of the contributing writers of this anthology. I have chosen to spotlight the contributions of some of the other authors in my review.)
